REFLECTING ON 100 YEARS OF OHIO LIVING
2022 marks an outstanding organizational milestone for Ohio Living – our 100th anniversary.
What started in Sydney, Ohio as Dorothy Love Presbyterian Home in 1922 has blossomed into one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit, multi-site aging services organizations with 12 life plan communities, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice, Physician Services and Palliative Medicine, and the Ohio Living Foundation.
When I consider the impact of 100 years, I’m encouraged that our organization continues to evolve, continues to grow…continues to not only rest on today, but move forward and execute visions of tomorrow. Whether embracing technology to enhance care delivery, fostering unparalleled compassion, or cultivating partnerships, Ohio Living continues to seek innovative solutions to challenges.
The launch of the Perennial Consortium this year was a notable success to ring in our centennial year. In partnership with three other senior living providers, Ohio Living championed the creation of an owner-operated Medicare Advantage network, Perennial Consortium. This innovative approach to insurance and care allows our residents to have peace of mind knowing that the insurance aspect of their care is being handled by people who truly understand and respect their individual needs. Moving our mission forward through value-based initiatives like this makes me proud to do the work we do.
It’s a calling; what we do is a calling, and it’s carried out by our outstanding team of 2,700+ employees. I’m fueled immeasurably by getting out into our communities, in our home health and hospice locations and beyond, and seeing what we deliver upon. Amidst a very challenging time in the aging services industry, we do not compromise on quality and care. Together, we remain united in our efforts to serve adults at a point in their lives when they need us the most.
As we continue to sustain ourselves and proactively create new value propositions that will help older adults optimize their life as they continue to age, I’m excited about what tomorrow is going to bring for our organization.

Great Place to Work, Best Workplaces for Aging Services Designations Extended Another Year
Great things hold their value, and Ohio Living is proud to be named a Great Place to Work™ for the fifth consecutive year from Great Place to Work®, the global authority on workplace culture. The annual certification process consists of externally conducted employee surveys that focus on policies, organizational structure, employee engagement and other workplace experiences.
Additionally, Ohio Living has been nationally ranked at #23 on Fortune magazine’s list of Best Workplaces in Aging Services for 2022.
The results were determined by survey feedback from over 243,000 employees working in the United States senior housing and care industry. Ohio Living’s certification as a Great Place to Work® is what qualified it to be considered for this prestigious honor.
“Our committed staff are navigating an industry that continues to grow with new challenges each day, but remarkably they meet those obstacles with passion, contribution and an unparalleled mission-focus,” shares Chief Human Resources Officer, Dana Ullom-Vucelich. “They bring the ‘Living’ into Ohio Living.”
As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, Ohio Living identifies ten beliefs at the core of its operation — inclusiveness, respect, innovation, dedicated staff and volunteers, high ethical standards, high-quality and caring service, being a good neighbor, responsiveness, financial stability and open dialogue. Its culture of appreciation and recognition is designed to reward living out each of these values.

Ohio Living, Curana Health Partner to Elevate Physicians Services
Ohio Living and Curana Health have teamed up to bring higher expertise and quality of care to adults throughout the Buckeye State through a reimagined Physician Services program, known as Curana Health Medical Group.
The joint venture builds on the existing Ohio Living Physician Services model, which provides a team of transitional care physicians and clinicians in a variety of settings from skilled nursing communities and rehab facilities, to assisted living centers and private homes. Added expertise in clinical leadership, engaged and experienced providers, and industry relationships from Curana Health will further elevate the patient experience moving forward.
“Moving our mission forward fuels everything we do at Ohio Living,” says Laurence Gumina, Ohio Living CEO. “We are continually evaluating our offerings and are excited to partner with Curana Health to leverage our mutual strengths and provide even greater Physician Services to our residents and patients. We are committed to raising the bar when it comes to providing outstanding and value-based care.”
Perennial Advantage Health Plan Launches
In 2021, Ohio Living launched Perennial Consortium, a provider-owned Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan, alongside fellow providers Juniper Communities and Christian Living Communities and our managing partner AllyAlignHealth.
Perennial Advantage is more than a health plan; it’s a cost-effective and streamlined way to bring residents the care and services they need. A centralized point of contact, comprehensive care coordination and frequent preventative care visits are just a few of the benefits. This innovative approach to insurance and care will enable Ohio Living residents to have peace of mind knowing that the insurance aspect of their care is being handled by people who truly understand and respect their individual needs.
Statewide Hiring Day Yields Top Talent
On Jan. 3, 2022, Ohio Living hosted a first-of-its-kind Statewide Hiring Day to fill an assortment of open positions across its senior living communities and service lines.
Seven in-person events were hosted throughout Ohio, with career opportunities ranging from corporate roles to culinary positions. Applicants were invited to participate in on-site interviews and learn more about position benefits and organizational culture. Prize raffles for premium items, including iPads, were also on tap.
It takes people to move the mission forward. Ohio Living remains committed to optimizing its staffing initiatives to include not only thoughtful recruitment, but also retention.

Intergenerational Learning Center Opens in Partnership with Youngstown State University
Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice - Greater Youngstown and Youngstown State University (YSU) are collaborating on a new university-supported intergenerational learning center named “Vivo Center.” This program has been made possible by critical funding from the Ohio Living Foundation.
The Ohio Living Vivo Center is designed to address the changing needs of older adults in the community while creating a “living lab” for YSU students to gain hands-on experience working with the aging population.
“Intergenerational programming has been shown to be beneficial to both older and younger adults, and intergenerational interactions can be the gateway for students into a career in the aging field,” said Sarah Hadley, Executive Director - Greater Cleveland and Greater Youngstown, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice.
“Attracting YSU students to aging careers through the collaboration with the Ohio Living Vivo Center combined with Ohio Living offering mentoring and professional development opportunities for students is one way to address the workforce shortage in elder care and services,” Hadley added.
The name “Vivo Center” was selected through a contest among YSU students and Youngstown Senior Center members. A kickoff event was hosted on YSU’s campus in April 2022, complete with breakfast, speakers, keynote presentation and information tables for intergenerational learning.

Ohio Living, Amazon, Aiva Health, Partners Install Echo Dots for 500 Local Seniors
The Ohio Living Foundation has teamed up with Amazon and other partners to install Echo Dot smart speakers free of charge in the homes of 500 qualifying senior citizens in the Mahoning Valley.
The Echo Dots, which can relay audio announcements and reminders and support some two-way interaction, are intended to improve communication, health and safety for senior citizens. "Smart speakers can dramatically enhance communication and peace of mind for senior citizens and their families, and we’re very excited about serving these 500 individuals,” said Wendy Price Kiser, chief operating officer of holdings, which provides supportive services that help seniors stay independent. “We're viewing this rollout as a learning experience that could help Ohio Living provide smart speaker technology to hundreds of senior citizens who live in our communities across Ohio."
The program is designed to serve low-income senior citizens. Amazon is donating the 500 Echo Dots and Aiva Health, a voice technology provider, is discounting its work to program the devices. Ohio Living is donating funds for the remaining installation expense and Family and Community Services, a Ravenna-based nonprofit, is coordinating the rollout and enrolling eligible senior citizens, along with the Senior Support Action Group, which assists seniors in the Mahoning Valley.
The Echo Dot is a voice-controlled smart speaker that provides music, news, information and more. Through Amazon’s Alexa Smart Properties senior living solution, the Echo Dots distributed through this initiative can also relay announcements about food assistance delivery, provide community information and call up to five specific phone numbers on request. The capabilities of the devices can also be further customized by residents. For example, one participant’s Echo Dot delivers daily Bible readings.
“We believe the intuitive and accessible nature of voice and Alexa has the potential to help and delight customers in many scenarios, in and outside of the home,” said Liron Torres, head of Alexa Smart Properties, Amazon. “We build devices and services that help make customers’ lives better, and the senior living solution from Alexa Smart Properties enables organizations like the Ohio Living Foundation to do exactly that, while helping associates focus on important tasks and high-value care.”

Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber to partner with OSU on robot pilot
Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber is participating in an eight-week, $3.13 million study testing whether socially assistive robots, some of which are shaped like animals, can encourage social interaction among older adults, especially those living with dementia. The study is in partnership with Vanderbilt University and Ohio State University’s College of Nursing who received a five-year grant from the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health.
Robot pets were first introduced in the early 2000s. Initially, they were regarded as clunky and costly; however, as technology has evolved, they’ve become more lifelike and responsive. Today, advanced animatronics can respond to touch and sound and mimic signs of life, like breathing and purring. Unlike live pets, robot pets do not require hands-on care, and they don’t present any behavioral surprises or allergy risk.
We’re always looking for peace and joy outcomes,” said Leslie Belfance, Ohio Living chief operating officer of communities, adding that OSU is 12 blocks from the Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber community. “When we were approached about participating in the study, to have a little animal that is realistic for our residents, it would be fun and joyful for them. For some, it’s very calming and peaceful to sit and pet an animal.”
The study will enable researchers to improve adaptive robot-mediated intervention architecture through software development, measure a reduction in apathy among older adults with cognitive impairments and mild or moderate dementia, and identify future scalability and sustainability of socially assistive robot implementation in longterm care settings.
and at several other Ohio Living life plan communities throughout the state," said Laurence Gumina, Ohio Living CEO. "Engagement with iN2L has remarkable effects on residents’ physical, mental and social well-being, and the value iN2L has brought to our campuses is immeasurable.”

Director of Nursing Honored as Columbus Business First Healthcare Hero
In March 2022, Samantha Patrick, director of nursing, Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber was honored as a Columbus Business First Healthcare Hero. The recognition honored healthcare workers in Central Ohio who distinguished themselves with exceptional service and care during the pandemic.
Patrick has been with the organization for 17 years, starting out as a charge nurse on the night shift before climbing the ladder to her current position overseeing about 150 staffers.
“Her dedication to and love for the staff is evident in her desire to create a fun environment in the midst of the heaviness that has accompanied the pandemic,” said Sydney McBride, Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber’s executive director, in her nomination of Patrick for a Healthcare Heroes recognition. “She enthusiastically facilitates group moments of recognition and meets 1:1 to help soothe away sadness. Her exceptional clinical skills and huge heart are gifts.”
Raising the Bar with Deficiency-Free Surveys
On the heels of a survey moratorium, the Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice - Greater Cleveland team earned a standard deficiency-free survey from the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP). We applaud our teams on a job well done and for continuing to provide the highest level of care in alignment with our mission.

Youngstown Area Chaplain Nominated for H.O.P.E. Award
Annually, The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley awards the H.O.P.E. Award for Lifetime Achievement. It is presented to an individual who is: Honorable. Outstanding. Philanthropic. Excellent. In 2022, Daniel Tayman, chaplain at Ohio Living home Health & Hospice – Greater Youngstown, was nominated.
“Daniel has served as chaplain in the Youngstown service area for more than seven and a half years,” said Sarah Hadley, executive director, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice – Greater Cleveland and Youngstown. “He is a natural-born leader and demonstrates these abilities through countless projects that he spearheads in Youngstown and Cleveland. His determination to improve the lives of patients, families and staff members throughout these communities is unparalleled - we call him our very own Patch Adams!”
Throughout his tenure, Daniel has been awarded the 2015 Valley Legacy Award for outstanding senior advocate and 2019 Ohio Living Greater Youngstown Employee of the Year accolades. He is selfless in his work and serves with a greater purpose that others admire,” said Hadley. “His focus is always for the greater good and his ideas, events, assistance, direction, wisdom always serves to unite people and glorify God.”

CELEBRATING OUR ANNIVERSARY Centennial
Each Ohio Living community celebrated the centennial in their own unique way, from 1920s-themed parties and concerts to parades and food truck events. Eleven campuses hosted the Legacy Tour: A Cherished Journey that Began with Love, where guests could explore a traveling exhibit filled with artifacts and mementos from the past hundred years. As another part of the celebration, over 140 residents, family members and employees were interviewed; their answers to the question How would you describe Ohio Living in one word? are featured throughout this spread.

“It’s great to be able to take care of the needs of the residents and their families. I treat them like I want my family to be treated and it’s nice to know that I’m making a difference in the lives of the residents. I’ve been here for so long and seen people through the stages of life. It’s good to take care of them and make their time here a pleasant experience.”
“One time, my son, who volunteered here over 400 hours as a teenager, visited the residents in his Marine uniform and the residents he had served earlier stood up and saluted him. It was a special moment for all of us.”

“When I first came to the United States, I was in the hospital from an accident. That inspired me to find a job where I could care for others, because I was so grateful for those who cared for me. Now the residents are my family. I worry about them even when I’m on vacation!”
“Three of my grandparents passed away close to each other and I must have seemed a little sad one day. One of the residents asked me what was wrong and when I told her, she told me that she would be my grandmother. This resident had raised her three granddaughters after the death of her own daughter. The generous nature of her heart touched me.”
“Every day is joyful and fulfilling knowing that I make a difference in the lives of our residents. This is my home away from home.”

Cynthia’s Garden Blossoms into Resident Favorite
Terry White, resident at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber and resident director of the Ohio Living board, and his two daughters, Ann Connelly and Stephanie Jacobs, have made an impactful gift to Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber for the installation of Cynthia’s Garden in honor of his late wife, Cynthia White.
Cynthia’s Garden is an outdoor patio at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber’s skilled nursing facility. The garden hosts perennials, flowering shrubs and colorful planters, with chairs and umbrellas for residents and their families, to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. “My wife spent several years in the care of the nurses at the skilled nursing facility,” said Terry. “She was always fascinated by gardens and flowers, and we wanted to create something in her memory. “Every time I went to see her in skilled nursing, I noticed that one section of the facility didn’t have an outdoor space for residents,” Terry added. “I thought it would be the best way to honor my wife’s memory, provide a nice space for the residents and their families to enjoy, and most importantly, to express gratitude to the wonderful nurses who cared for my wife at WestminsterThurber and all of the residents who showed us support.”
Cynthia’s Garden broke ground in April 2021 and was completed last fall.“My wife was very caring and giving. She would be very happy to see the residents have this space,” said Terry. “It represents her life, her career as a nurse and who she was as a person.”
Nature Trail Brings Serenity to Ohio Living Swan Creek
Residents, families, staff and visitors now have a scenic and serene place to take in the outdoors at Ohio Living Swan Creek.
Chuck Reynolds, chairman and founder of Reynolds Construction Company in Maumee, Ohio, was a resident of Ohio Living Swan Creek until he passed away in August 2022. Chuck donated funds to construct the Reynolds Family Nature Trail, which was officially opened and dedicated in October of 2021. The trail is part of a larger, multi-phased outdoor recreation area.
After learning about the vision for the trail and reviewing the construction plans, Chuck, a life-long lover of nature said, “I knew I wanted to fund the project immediately.” Throughout the construction process, Chuck was actively involved and glad to combine his expertise with a project that was meaningful for him to support.
“Since the nature trail is an actual boardwalk that weaves through the wooded area on campus and is built near the creek, people who use wheelchairs or walkers can get back into the woods and enjoy nature once again,” said Chuck.
Not only does the outdoor area bring a breathtaking taste of nature to campus, but the space has also been used for concerts and events for residents and staff.
"This gift allows our current and future residents, families and employees to create meaningful moments and memories while at Swan Creek that embody our mission of caring for the whole person: mind, body and spirit," said Tim Phillips, executive director, Ohio Living Swan Creek.

PHILANTHROPY
YEARS OF
Trinity Garden Opens at Ohio Living Llanfair with Special Memorial Service
Ed Wells, an Ohio Living Llanfair resident for 18 years, was memorialized at his Celebration of Life ceremony, and the dedication of a new garden made possible through his generosity.
The community is home to a beautiful arboretum but identified the need for a new outdoor gathering space – the Wells Family Trinity Garden turned out to be the perfect solution. The Trinity Garden sits in a central location on Llanfair’s campus and creates a much-needed space for residents, family members, and staff. It features a pergola with retractable sun shades, a meditation garden with a water feature, and includes native and seasonal plants. Ann Roller, Ohio Living Llanfair executive director, noted that “when the weather is nice, there is always a group conversing under the pergola. The space has become a focal point for the community in a very short time.” Construction on the garden began in 2020, as the pandemic highlighted the importance of outdoor meeting areas.
“With Ed, he was either for something or against it. When the idea surfaced, Ed was very excited about the garden”, said Brian Voegele, Director of Environmental Services at Ohio Living Llanfair. “Ed was just a great guy. He did it for the love of the community and the residents. He loved our staff tremendously.”
Paula Brock, Director of Gift Planning at Ohio Living Llanfair, commented: “His family explained to me that being a part of Ohio Living Llanfair brought out a philanthropic social awareness about him that was astonishing to watch. They were so appreciative of the care he received here.”
Over the years, Wells generously contributed to numerous projects at Ohio Living Llanfair. He had a deep love for the College Hill neighborhood and played an important role in its ongoing revitalization. Mr. Wells passed away in February 2021.
Courtyard Brightens Outdoor Space at Ohio Living Cape May
A new, updated courtyard opened in summer 2021, thanks to a combination of generous charitable gifts to Ohio Living Foundation and capital dollars from Ohio Living.
The courtyard, located in the middle of Ohio Living Cape May’s main Cambridge building, features a pergola, water feature, meditation garden, outdoor entertainment area and a butterfly sanctuary. Residents can enjoy this outdoor area when visiting with family and friends, holding celebrations and as a place for quiet meditation and prayer. Many are also showing off their green thumbs by growing vegetables and herbs in the new raised gardening beds.
“A lot of partnerships and planning have contributed to this three-phased project,” said Brad Reynolds, former Ohio Living Cape May executive director and administrator. “We appreciate the ongoing support and look forward to utilizing the outdoor space for many years to come.”
