Harriet Taylor Upton had a low opinion of women who sought the right to vote when she arrived in Washington, DC, in 1880 with her father, U.S. Rep. Ezra B. Taylor. But the Warren, Ohio, native became friends with Susan B. Anthony and other suffragists and soon found herself a key figure in the movement to pass the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.

CLINTON COUNTY QUAKERS DURING WORLD WAR I The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is called a Peace Church for its repudiation of “all outward wars and strife.” During World War I, 12 Quakers from Clinton County, Ohio, joined the American Friends Service Committee in order to serve their country while remaining true to their faith.

Burning River PROPELLING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT When the Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1969, Time magazine ran a story about it that gained national attention, sparking the environmental movement. Within a year, the federal government had created the Environmental Protection Agency, enhanced the Clean Air Act and passed the Clean Water Act.

GREATEST PLAYER IN OHIO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HISTORY Katie Smith grew up on a farm outside Logan, Ohio, showing steers at the county fair and roughhousing with her two brothers.

She became the greatest women’s basketball player ever at The Ohio State University, and was the first female athlete to have her number, 30, retired by the university.

LET TER FROM OUR EDITORS In the January & February 2019 issue of Echoes Magazine, we featured a story about Bexley aviator Jerrie Mock, first woman to successfully fly solo around the globe in 1964.

After the article appeared, we received an email from Wendy Hollinger of Phoenix Graphix Publishing Services in Granville. She self-identified as “one of Jerrie Mock’s biggest cheerleaders.” But she’s much more than that. Hollinger is responsible for Mock’s memoir, Three-Eight Charlie, reissued in 2014, and she knew Mock well. In her email to us, Hollinger shared several points of clarification and provided us with more of Mock’s story.

But additional images inside the magazine weren’t of the 180. “The photos in the article show a Cessna 206, which Jerrie received after her 180 went first to Wichita, then to the Smithsonian.”

What we didn’t realize and what Hollinger let us know was that after Mock made history, she flew her last and longest non-stop flight and donated her Cessna 206 for missionary work in New Guinea.

In our piece, we referred to Mock as the “self-styled flying housewife,” a moniker frequently used by reporters covering her remarkable journey but not by Mock herself.

“Jerrie disliked the nickname,” Hollinger wrote. “She generally wore a skirt when departing the plane, but that was expected in 1964. She would have preferred slacks.”

As word spread of Mock’s plans to fly solo around the world, a pilot from California, Joan Merriam Smith, announced her plan to compete with Mock. Mock handily defeated Smith, according to Hollinger.

“Jerrie didn’t stop in Tucson because the ‘race’ was over, but to add miles. Since her flight was not equatorial, the additional miles were necessary for the around the world record. Jerrie returned 25 days prior to Smith, and adding Joan’s head start, Jerrie beat her by 27 days.”

Hollinger also wanted to give credit where it is due.

“Your article was correct to highlight contributions by the Columbus Foundation, Airport Authority and Business Women in Airports, for the statues in Newark and the Columbus airport,” she wrote. “But many more people worked tirelessly to raise funds and make donations to both projects. The Licking County Foundation-managed fund in Newark was specific to the Jerrie Mock sculpture now located at the Works Museum, with the significant backing of Bill Kelley.

“Mr. Kelley and Jerrie’s sister, Susan Reid, raised money one small donation at a time. The fund in Columbus was created by the Columbus Pilot Organization (not pilots who fly) and Shirley BrooksJones, and was managed by the Columbus Foundation."

Here are some of your responses: REDS ON THE RADIO My father was born and raised in Cincinnati. Naturally, he was a Redlegs fan. Although as a family we only lived there briefly, we were raised to root for the Reds, too! The Big Red Machine was tearing up the bases when I was a little girl, but my mother was strict about my bedtime and would send me off before the end of many games. I was such a fan at age 8, I had my father’s transistor radio hidden under my bed and would retrieve it to tune into the call of the game. I would place the radio under my pillow to muffle the sound and fall asleep with visions of the game playing in my head.

I can still hear Joe Nuxhall’s voice—“This is the old lefthander, rounding third and heading for home.”

TICKETS FOR GRADES In the 1950s and early ‘60s, either the Cleveland Press or Plain Dealer would give straight-A students two tickets to three to seven games depending on your grade level. Most games were in the afternoon, so my friends and I would ride the bus from Seven Hills to Municipal Stadium. We got 10-cent hot dogs, Cokes and popcorn and scored

the game while we watched our heroes. Then, on the bus ride back home we relived the whole day. The possibility of free tickets kept us on task at school until the end of the year.

PREPARING FOR LIFE’S DISAPPOINTMENTS

I had been to Crosley Field a few times before the Cincinnati Reds made their first drive for the National League pennant in my lifetime, but one precious memory doesn’t involve a game I saw there or even on television.

One day in late September 1961, my grandfather told me that my favorite player, Jerry Lynch, had hit another pinch-hit home run and the Reds had beaten the Cubs. I went to bed knowing the Reds had clinched a tie for the title.

A couple of hours later, my mother awakened me and led me to the living room. On TV, a bus crept through thousands of partying fans in Fountain Square. That bus carried the Reds, now the league champions because the Dodgers had lost that night. It was probably the first time I realized how worked up people could get about sports. My parents knew how much I loved the Reds and, bless them, they wanted me to be in on the celebration.

THE NO-HIT TER I grew up in Canton, and the Indians were my favorite team. In those preinterstate days, the drive up State Route 8 to Cleveland Municipal Stadium was over an hour and a half. It was just mid-morning, but it was already hot and all four car windows were down. As we approached downtown, we looked for an American flag atop the Terminal Tower, “the tallest building between New York and Chicago.” When we saw Old Glory flying, we were assured the Indians would play that day. I well remember the doubleheader the

Indians played on July 1, 1951, against the Detroit Tigers. We had reserved seats, first-base side, halfway up the lower deck. There were four of us: our father, Dale Bailey; our mother, Margaret Vegh Bailey; my brother Glenn, 12; and me, 8. The Tribe took the first game 3–1 and were leading the second 2–0 after eight innings.

It had been a long, hot, humid day for an 8-yearold and my attention was beginning to lag. After all, Indians ace Bob Feller was pitching as the Detroit Tigers came to bat in the top of the ninth inning trailing 2–0 and our victory seemed assured. But just as my grogginess was taking hold, my mother jumped to her feet, clapping and screaming “A nohitter! A no-hitter! A no-hitter!” I was immediately wide awake, jumped up and joined her. Our section quickly followed and soon the entire stadium was chanting: “A no hitter! A no-hitter! A no-hitter!” My mother was a big Indians fan before that, but her love of the team increased that hot Sunday afternoon. I often would come home from Worley Elementary to find her in the living room, watching the Indians on our 12-inch Zenith and ironing at the same time. She and my dad are long gone, but every now and then I’ll be visiting my brother Glenn in Canton and we’ll reminisce about our mom leading the chant: “A no-hitter! A no-hitter!”

A cynic might say that the best lesson for any Cleveland Indians fan is learning to deal with disappointment. My earliest baseball memory is of the Indians being swept by the New York Giants in the 1954 World Series. Later came the injury to Herb Score and the trade of Rocky Colavito, as well as ridiculous moments like Vic Power grounding out while the Detroit Tigers were trying to give him an intentional walk. But all those disappointments hurt because I cared. It wasn’t easy to be an Indians fan growing up in Toledo, which favored the Tigers. What kept me caring was the distinctive voice of Virginia-born broadcaster Jimmy Dudley. His passion for the sport made each game seem special, almost sacred. In my head I still hear him calling double plays and home runs and signing off: “So long, and lots of good luck, yuh heah!”

Explore Ohio Landmarks Online in SAH Archipedia Classic Buildings On a winter afternoon in January 2014, a group of nearly 30 preservationists, architectural historians and other experts from across the Buckeye State gathered at the Ohio History Center in Columbus to try to answer the question “What are the 100 most significant buildings in Ohio?”

of possibilities remaining. At that point, the group began looking for individual buildings that are broadly representative of an entire class of buildings of which Ohio has so many good examples—county courthouses, for instance.

So what prompted this exercise in the first place? The goal was to fill 100 spaces allotted to Ohio by the Society of Architectural Historians in Archipedia, a new online guide to notable buildings all over the United States.

“In the end, by including some groupings of buildings, we managed to highlight 139 Ohio buildings,” says architectural historian Barbara Powers of the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office. Powers served as Ohio coordinator for the Society of Architectural Historians project.

SOUNDS EASIER THAN IT IS

This sounds easier than it is. In a populous state with many landmarks, there are some very well-known ones that come to almost anyone’s mind right away. Where it gets harder is after you get past the Statehouse, Cleveland’s Terminal Tower, Cincinnati Union Terminal and a couple dozen other standouts that pretty much everyone agrees belong on any such list—there are still about 70 spots remaining.

It’s much harder to decide about those, not because there aren’t enough, but because there are so many. Ohio has a wealth of historic buildings and there are hundreds

But choosing the 100 (or 139) buildings was just the start. Powers organized 26 authors to write about one or more of the buildings each and provide photos of it. Volunteer

Yours for Race and Country— Reflections on the Life of Col. Charles Young The Ohio History Connection’s National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center in Wilberforce has opened a new exhibit in collaboration with renowned quilt artist, curator and educator Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi.

Yours for Race and Country: Reflections on the Life of Col. Charles Young consists of 33 handcrafted art quilts made by members of the Women of Color Quilters Network.

Celebrating the life of Col. Charles Young (1864–1922), the exhibit also includes Col. Charles Young artifacts from the National AfroAmerican Museum & Cultural Center's collections.

ABOUT COL. CHARLES YOUNG

Born into slavery in Kentucky in 1864, Young grew up in southwest Ohio. In 1884, he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and in 1889 became the third African American to graduate from West Point. From 1889 to 1894, he commanded black troops—the famed Buffalo Soldiers—who patrolled the Western frontier.

During the 1898 Spanish-American War, he commanded the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Battalion. Later he

Today his former home in Wilberforce, called Youngholm, is the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service.

led troops in the Philippine-American War. In 1903, assigned to manage California’s Sequoia National Park, he became the first African American park superintendent. Subsequently, he was appointed the first African American military attaché, serving in that capacity in the black republic of Haiti and the Dominican Republic from 1904 to 1907.

In 1917, Army doctors diagnosed Young with Bright’s disease. Although doctors recommended that he be allowed to continue in active service, he was involuntarily retired and was promoted as the first African American colonel. He protested his forced retirement by riding his horse from his home in Wilberforce, Ohio, to Washington, D.C., to prove his fitness. He was reactivated in 1918, just days before the end of World War I. Young accepted reassignment as military attaché to the Republic of Liberia. He died in 1922, while on an intelligence mission in Nigeria.

Coshocton’s Main Street Historic District has been added to the National Register for its history as the center of local commercial life and its association with the evolution of Coshocton as an industrial center at the forks of the Muskingum River. The district includes 117 one-to-four-story civic, private, institutional, religious, governmental and residential buildings dating from 1866 to 1970. They illustrate mid-19th through mid-20th century architectural styles including Romanesque Revival, Italianate, Second Empire,

Queen Anne, Second Renaissance Revival, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Late Gothic Revival, Jacobethan, Tudor Revival, Mediterranean, Art Deco, International Style and Brutalism.

Homes inspired by what Americans imagined houses in the Italian countryside to look like were in fashion when the Wickersham House was built in 1876. This two-story red brick house on a gray stone foundation has tall, arched windows that give it the overall vertical look that’s a hallmark of the Italianate style.

The original oak front door is centered, recessed inside a decorative surround.

Below the low, overhanging roof is another feature typical of Italianate buildings: a paneled cornice with scrolled brackets.

An example of the lightindustrial buildings built at the turn of the 20th century in downtown Toledo, the Ontario Building has been added to the National Register for its association with Toledo real estate developer Thomas H. Walbridge, who completed the five-story building in

Urbana’s North Ward District School, designed by architects Brown, Burton and Davis of Cincinnati, opened in 1901. The two-and-a-half story red brick building has contrasting limestone trim and a neoclassical doorway bearing the words “North District School.”

South Ward District School stands on the site of an earlier school destroyed by fire in 1919, and a 19th-century iron fence still runs the length of the property along Main Street. Hamilton, Ohio, architect Frederic Mueller designed the two-story school, with red brick and contrasting limestone trim in an English Renaissanceinspired style popular at the time it opened in 1921.

Both schools have one-story additions of the early 1950s, reflecting Urbana's citywide school improvement program prompted by the Baby Boom after World War II.

On Mon., April 8, 2019, Licking County Common Pleas Judge David Branstool heard final testimony and closing arguments for the Ohio History Connection’s proposed acquisition of the lease at Octagon Earthworks. The Ohio History Connection has owned Octagon Earthworks since 1933.

The judge is ruling on the public use and necessity of our acquiring a lease held by Moundbuilders Country Club and golf course that would not expire until 2078. When this issue of Echoes Magazine went to press, final written statements by both parties were due to the judge by April 22 and a ruling was expected soon after. If the judge rules in favor of the Ohio History Connection, a separate trial before a jury will be held Sept. 10 to determine the value of the lease.

Octagon Earthworks is part of the larger Newark Earthworks, unmatched anywhere in the world for its enormous scale, geometric precision and astronomical alignments. It’s also part of the proposed Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks nomination for designation as a World Heritage Site.

After years of negotiations with Moundbuilders Country Club that began in 2013, the Ohio History Connection has determined that the only remaining option to ensure full public and research access to the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is to acquire the Moundbuilders Country Club lease.

to microfilm, digitize and make available online The Exponent, a local newspaper published from 1874 to 1883, one of the few sources available on the history of Chagrin Falls and neighboring communities at the time. African American Developers in Cleveland, a history that builds on previous Cleveland Restoration Society projects in African American neighborhoods.

Sharing the biographies of black builders is expected to valorize their achievements, contribute to residents’ sense of place and add to the body of knowledge about local African American developers and suburbanization in the years after World War II. DELAWARE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, DELAWARE • $6,000 to

replace failing pressed-wood shelving in the society’s Cryder Research Library with metal shelving. Sturdier shelves will enable the society to better organize its bound collections and improve access for researchers and students as well as society volunteers and staff who use the library to prepare exhibits and programs and respond to inquiries.

FRIENDS OF CROWELL HILAKA, RICHFIELD • $15,250 to develop

a master plan, construction documents and cost estimates for restoring Kirby’s Mill, built in 1922 as a testing site for vacuum cleaners and household appliances developed by inventor James Kirby.

$9,158 to make Toledo’s 1895 Edward Drummond Libbey House—a National Historic Landmark— accessible to all by adding a ramp and half-bath that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Libbey and the companies he founded made Toledo the “Glass Capital of the World.” Edward and Florence Scott Libbey, in addition to founding the Toledo Museum of Art, directed their philanthropy to the city’s neediest citizens, including those served by the Toledo Society for Crippled Children, now the Ability Center. The goal is to have the Libbey House accessible by the 2020 centennial of the Ability Center, which is a partner in the project.

METROPARKS TOLEDO, TOLEDO

$3,285 for revitalization of the Isaac Ludwig Mill. Part of Providence Metropark, the working 1866 mill, together with a section of the Miami & Erie Canal, a working lock and canal boat rides, teaches visitors about life in the 1870s. The project will update exhibits and hands-on activities at the mill, enabling park staff to share the story of the site in light of newer third and fourth-grade curriculum standards. Updates will allow causal visitors to discover the mill at their own pace, in addition to first-person experiences offered at the site, which welcomes thousands of schoolchildren, adults and seniors annually.

OBERLIN HERITAGE CENTER, OBERLIN

$2,007 to benchmark best practices for self-guided tours in historic house museums, many of which are turning to self-guided tours because volunteers in the numbers required can be hard to find. Oberlin Heritage Center representatives will visit house museums of various sizes

and capacities, interview the staffs, derive best practices from the data they gather and share their findings through professional organizations serving house museums in Ohio.

SOUTHERN LORAIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, WELLINGTON • $18,000

to conserve a large mural about Freemasonry by Wellington native Archibald Willard, creator of the iconic painting The Spirit of ’76. The mural is one of three large Willard murals donated to Wellington’s Spirit of ’76 Museum in 2017. Southern Lorain County Historical Society will contract with professional art conservators to conserve the mural.

After conservation, the Freemasonry mural will be exhibited in the society’s Spirit of ’76 Museum in downtown Wellington.

WARREN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION / SUTLIFF MUSEUM, WARREN

$5,300 for a new augmented reality experience for visitors to Warren’s Sutliff Museum. The project will create an app for hand-held digital devices with the goal of broadening and diversifying the museum’s audience. With a collection of over 800 documents related to the abolitionist movement and the Sutliff family, plus collections of Victorian and antislavery artifacts, the museum is seeking to offer visitors a chance to delve into the collection digitally through iPad rentals or visitors’ own devices.

It has received 347 grant proposals totaling $4.2 million in requests, according to Ohio History Fund Grants Coordinator Andy Verhoff of the Ohio History Connection, who says the level of interest demonstrates the strong need for such a program.

John D. Reese— The Nation’s Baseball Doctor SAT., MAY 4 & 18 PERFORMANCES AT 1 & 3 P.M. Youngstown’s John D. Reese (1855– 1931) was a bonesetter—a practitioner

who manipulated joints, bones and muscles to heal them. Among his clients were many athletes, especially baseball players. Listen as a reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator, played by Ron St. Pierre, shares the story of Reese’s life and the names of those he treated. Echoes in Time Theatre lasts about 30–45 minutes and includes a post-performance Q&A.

Harriet Taylor Upton “THE GENERAL” LEADS THE CHARGE FOR WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE

H

arriet Taylor Upton is an unlikely hero of the women’s suffrage movement.

In fact, the first time two suffragists tried to get an audience with her—at the time her father was a member of Congress from Trumbull County in northeast Ohio—she fled to her room, locked herself in and stayed there until they’d gone.

In her memoir, Random Recollections, Upton recalled, “When the callers had departed, I came from my room greatly agitated, and in the most stilted fashion stood before my father and with trembling voice said, ‘Father, a daughter cannot control the conduct of her father, but if you’re going to consort with low women, I do not want you to bring them to our room(s).’”

Upton’s father admonished his daughter not to “be a gump.” But she remained adamant. “I really believed that no self-respecting woman would advocate women’s rights.”

Ezra Taylor served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1880 through 1893, and his daughter accompanied him as head of the household. (Her mother, Harriet Frazier, had passed away in 1876.)

NIBBLING AT THE SUFFRAGE BAIT Her years in Washington, D.C., opened doors to Upton, who met social reformer and suffragist Susan B. Anthony and began “nibbling at the suffrage bait.” In 1890, she joined the National American Woman Suffrage Association and the next year formed the advocacy group Ohio Women in Convention.

Upton served as treasurer of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1894 through 1910 and was responsible for shepherding the association through difficult times in the early 1900s.

Richard Dana is a historian who practices law in Austinburg, Ohio, and teaches sociology at Kent State University’s Ashtabula campus.

“Essentially, Harriet saved the National American Woman Suffrage Association,” Dana says. “The movement had lost momentum at the turn of the century, and the association’s coffers were empty.

New York City was an expensive place to do business.”

Upton recommended the association move its headquarters to her hometown of Warren, Ohio, as a cost-saving measure. Consequently, the National American Woman Suffrage Association was headquartered in Upton’s home (which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992) from 1903 to 1905 before moving into the newly built Trumbull County Courthouse building.

THE GENERAL “Upton was nicknamed ‘the General’ by her colleagues,” Dana says. “She exhibited extraordinary leadership skills in expanding the national suffrage organization during her term as treasurer.”

In addition to her role with the National American Woman Suffrage Association, Upton also served as president of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association from 1899 to 1908 and from 1911 through the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. She also ran for and secured a seat on Warren's school board in 1898. (Ohio granted women the right to vote in school board elections in 1893.)

At an Ohio Woman Suffrage Association event in Elyria in 1909, Upton chided those in attendance by insisting, “Any woman who admits she is needed in the public sphere as much as she is in the home, and then fails to take any interest in municipal affairs, is not true to herself.”

In 1912, Ohio held a Constitutional Convention that produced 41 amendments sent to the voters, including one that would provide women suffrage in the state. Though 33 of the amendments passed, the suffrage amendment did not. (It did pass in Upton’s Trumbull County.)

She was a reluctant suffragist, but she became 100 percent committed to the cause and worked for it for 30 years.

So influential was Upton that The Washington Post once wrote of her, “Mrs. Upton is without a doubt the best-liked and wisest suffrage worker in the country. Always in times of stress, the other state leaders have called up Mrs. Upton.”

The Harriet Taylor Upton House at 380 Mahoning Ave., N.W., in Warren is a shrine to one of Ohio’s leading suffragists. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, it features a Women’s Suffrage Museum and is open for tours and to rent.

Over the years, as Sarsany has learned more about Upton, she’s grown in her admiration for the suffragist.

“She had a great sense of humor, but she was also a very determined person, deeply involved in what she was doing,” Sarsany says. “She spent a lot of her time writing. And she tirelessly worked for suffrage. But something people might not know, Harriet was also fond of canning, sewing, crocheting, knitting and gardening. She was a well-rounded person.”

Sarsany says Upton was a “good mentor and a dedicated friend, a true friend. She mentored Elizabeth Hauser, who wrote thousands of pieces of literature for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and Florence Allen, who became the first woman to serve on a state supreme court and one of the first two women named a U.S. Circuit Court judge.”

She was a well-rounded person.

The last years of Upton’s life were a struggle. She was financially ruined by the Great Depression, moving away from Warren to Pasadena, California, where she died a pauper and was buried in an unmarked grave.

The Harriet Taylor Upton Association located her grave and arranged to have her ashes buried in the backyard of the Harriet Taylor Upton House.

“I view her as something of a tragic figure,” Dana says.

“She was born into wealth. Her father was a judge and member of Congress. She was high society in Washington, D.C., and she ended up having all her earthly possessions out on the lawn of her house being sold at auction.

“But what the Upton Association did to save her house and then to repatriate her remains to Warren is simply incredible.” –EM

“A lot of the action here in Ohio with the women’s movement took place in the 19th century,” says Ohio University history professor Katherine Jellison.

“Frances Dana Gage, who is the best-known chronicler of Sojourner Truth’s famous women’s rights speech in Akron in 1851, was born near Marietta and lived in McConnelsville,” Jellison explains.

“Of course, Harriet Beecher Stowe lived for a time in Cincinnati, as did her sister, Catharine Beecher, who was responsible for creating the discipline of home economics and for feminizing the teaching profession. Catharine Beecher argued that teaching was appropriate 'women’s work' because it involved the care of children.”

Gage, the Beecher sisters and many more Ohio women worked decades for passage (1919) and ratification (1920) of the 19th Amendment, which finally gave American women the right to vote. We’ll continue to share their stories in upcoming issues of Echoes Magazine.

CLINTON COUNTY QUAKERS DURING WORLD WAR I

he recent 100th anniversary of the end of World War I has brought renewed attention to the impact that a group of 12 Quakers from Clinton County, Ohio, made in Europe during and after the war as part of the American Friends Service Committee.

Since 1661, the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, has been known as a Peace Church for its utter denial of “all outward wars and strife.” But Quakers settling in Clinton County broke with the tradition of silent worship by being among the first to have fulltime, paid pastors—known as hireling ministers—to openly preach and outwardly lead.

So it was not a complete surprise when 12 men from the Wilmington area joined the American Friends Service Committee, which performed work neglected by other humanitarian organizations. The American Friends Service Committee, hoping to express its love of country and desire to serve it loyally, was established by the Quakers in 1917 to offer “any constructive work in which we can conscientiously serve humanity.” The U.S. Friends agreed to select, equip, transport and maintain the personnel at its expense as a bureau of the American Red Cross in France and as a joint effort with the English Friends already active there. Ultimately, 600 American volunteers joined the American Friends Service Committee, including 50 women.

The American Friends Service Committee, along with the Friends Service Council from Great Britain, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937 and 1938. In 1947, both were awarded the prize jointly, the only religious groups ever so honored.

James Montgomery Flagg’s famous 1917 Army recruitment poster featured Uncle Sam commanding, “I Want You.” The Clinton County men answered that call, yes, though it earned them the characterization “slacker,” a term then used to describe men who were trying to avoid military service through a variety of avenues, including under the guise of a denominational creed.

The secret American Protective League, formed that year to assist legitimate police powers in guarding the home front, soon was engaged in “slacker raids” against whomever they saw as draft dodgers in large U.S. cities. A Cincinnati pastor who spoke against the war was taken to Kentucky, where he was beaten, presumably by the American Protective League.

During this time, the American Civil Liberties Union also emerged as a defender of individual rights, especially for those whose conscience would not permit them to participate in the war.

“ARE QUAKERS SLACKERS?” Shortly after the U.S. entered the war in April 1917, an article appeared in the Wilmington News Journal asking “Are Quakers Slackers?” It put forward the opinion that Quaker men could legitimately be conscientious objectors only if it was due to a deeply held conviction (their Inner Light). Anything less would make them like any other shirker. In fact, the pastor of the largest Friends church in Wilmington reportedly told the youth in his meeting that they needed to join the military.

Luther Warren, a 26-year-old Quaker from Clinton County, reassured Wilmington newspaper readers during the summer of 1917 that alternative service was neither unpatriotic nor easy, and he insisted such volunteers were far from slackers. He was part of the first group drafted in Wilmington, even before President Woodrow Wilson’s proclamation on conscientious objector procedures. Until then, such decisions were left in the hands of local military officers and ultimately with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker.

The letters that conscientious objectors like Warren wrote home were notable for the absence of references to any mistreatment by the military. It undoubtedly stemmed from the fact that none of them were “absolutists.” Absolutists were conscientious objectors—most often Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish—who refused to cooperate with military expectations of shaving, wearing uniforms, marching in formation or even working in a position that might be construed as supporting military efforts. Such men were often treated severely and sent to prison.

AFFIRMATION, NOT OATH The only expression of noncooperation among the Wilmington men was an unwillingness to sign the oath of allegiance that read they would “solemnly swear” to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Four marked out the word “swear” and replaced it with “affirm.” That seemed to satisfy the men as well as the officers in charge.

From the beginning, the U.S. volunteers were readily integrated into the work of the British Quakers, the only major difference being age and maturity. Most of the Americans were recent, or soon to be, college graduates, while the Brits were older and had more established lives. Some small cultural clashes occasionally occurred, as when the British men smoked, a practice unacceptable to the American Quakers.

The Friends’ relief work in France was divided into four categories: medical, industry, reconstruction and agriculture. They assisted three broad groups of civilian victims: those living in the cellars or rubbish of their former homes, those whose villages had been destroyed and refugees from those villages or who had fled before the German advance.

Most Wilmington men constructed “demountable” housing, and a few worked in agriculture or medical work. Demountable, or prefabricated, wooden houses were built in sections to be moved to their permanent locations. Factories for producing them were established in northeast France, a good distance from the fighting.

INTERACTION WITH GERMAN PRISONERS Opportunities arose to work with the French army’s German prisoners of war through the demountable houses program. Volunteer Mark McMillan was impressed with the experience, noting that the Germans “were a joy to work with. They never tried to escape while in our care.” He got to know three of them well and corresponded with one for the remainder of his life. “No one knows how much good one does by being friendly,” he observed, “with even the underdog as we work.”

Close interaction with the German prisoners continued after the war. In the spring of 1919, the American Friends Service Committee learned that the U.S. military would be selling the contents of five large engineers’ dumps near Verdun at a fraction of

their value. Motivated by the French army’s offer to provide railway connections to Paris, they purchased the dumps. With permission from the French military, some 570 German prisoners volunteered to work with the Quakers. Together they moved “selected tools, building materials, implements and machinery convertible to farm use, as well as tractors, trucks, automobiles, motorcycles, spare parts and sundries large and small” that were either given away or sold at cost.

To compensate this “free labor,” the Quakers devised a way around the French prohibition against direct payment. After locating the families of the prisoners back in Germany, the British and American volunteers hand-delivered some money along with a photo and note from each prisoner. The Quakers involved in distributing them were struck by the abject poverty of the prisoners’ families. “These are such good, simple folk,” one wrote home, “and their sufferings have been, and are, still, so out of portion to their responsibility in the war!” As might be expected, the families were elated, but it also resonated with the entire community. Throngs were said to have welcomed “the Mission der Freunden.”

One volunteer in France summed up everyone’s feelings in a letter home: “I feel that I am doing much more good for humanity in this work than fighting the Kaiser. If I did not think that, I would enlist in the army today.”

MAKING A CAREER IN THE RED CROSS As local Quaker men came to the end of their volunteer work in France, they were given opportunities to sign up with the American Red Cross as full-time employees. Richard Larkin took advantage of the offer, joining the Red Cross to go to Romania. He had to join the army and automatically received the rank of lieutenant and a salary. Larkin lived and worked on a ship distributing supplies along the Danube River into Romania for six months.

They visited dozens of villages destitute of food and clothing, so they prepared a healthy soup— “Red Cross Gruel”— for entire villages. Sufficient ingredients were left for future meals.

“Today I have surely seen the poorest poor people that can exist,” Larkin noted. “It was just as dangerous to feed them as it was to get among a bunch of dad’s fatting hogs with a bucket of slop.”

On Sept. 21, 2016, during an International Day of Peace celebration, a plaque with the names of all of

the local Quaker men who volunteered in Europe during and after World War I was dedicated on the campus of Wilmington College. Nearly a hundred people, mostly relatives of the volunteers, attended what turned out to be a moving remembrance for all.

I feel that I am doing much more good for humanity in this work than fighting the Kaiser. If I did not think that, I would enlist in the army today.

Burning River PROPELLING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT

T

his June marks the 50th anniversary of the fire that— unfairly—turned Cleveland into the butt of jokes for decades to come. That’s because the Cuyahoga River caught fire. And rivers, being made of water, aren’t supposed to catch fire.

At around noon on June 22, 1969, floating pieces of oil-slicked debris on the Cuyahoga were ignited by sparks from a passing train. The fire lasted little more than half an hour and did between $50,000 and $100,000 in damage. There were no fatalities. The story barely made the newspaper, let alone the front page.

The fire didn’t make the news because the Cuyahoga River catching fire wasn’t all that newsworthy—it had caught fire 12 times, in fact, since 1868. At least two previous fires on the river had done considerably more damage: a 1952 blaze caused $1.3 million in damage; and a 1912 fire on the river took five lives.

But that 1952 conflagration helped launch a national environmental movement the likes of which the country had never seen. A photograph that appeared in the Aug. 1, 1969, issue of Time magazine—a full six weeks after most Clevelanders had forgotten all about the little fire— featured a dramatic photograph of the Cuyahoga ablaze, not from the previous June but from 17 years earlier.

Though Time took liberties with the photographs it chose for the story, it wasn’t exaggerating by much when it described the Cuyahoga: “Chocolate-brown, oily, bubbling with subsurface gases, it oozes rather than flows. ‘Anyone who falls into the Cuyahoga does not drown,’ Cleveland’s citizens joke grimly. ‘He decays.’”

Later in the same story, Time quoted the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, which had “dryly” noted, “The lower Cuyahoga has no visible signs of life, not even low forms such as leeches and sludge worms that usually thrive on waste.”

The river was, according to the magazine, “literally—a fire hazard.”

CLEANING UP THE ENVIRONMENT Last January, environmental activist Denis Hayes answered questions at The City Club of Cleveland about the Cuyahoga River catching fire and the aftermath of the Time story.

“In the 50 years since the burning of the Cuyahoga became the emblem of all that was wrong with industrial America,” he told the audience in attendance, “we’ve done a lot but need to do more.”

The “doing” began shortly after the Time article energized the nascent environmental movement and prodded the government to action. Hayes became the primary U.S. organizer of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

“What we have done since 1969 is kind of staggering,” he says. “In the next few years after Earth Day, we established the Environmental Protection Agency, passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the

Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Forest Protection Act and the Superfund.”

In their book, Crimes That Changed the World, Paul H. Robinson and Sarah M. Robinson discuss the impact of the Time article on the nation’s consciousness.

“Many (readers) realize that this is not a story unique to Cleveland: over one hundred years of industrialization have crippled entire regions. Lake Erie is considered a ‘dying lake,’” they write.

“Across the country, other rivers have also been

known to burn: Michigan’s Rouge River, the Schuylkill River of Philadelphia, the Buffalo River of Buffalo, and the Chicago River, as well as both Baltimore and New York harbors.”

AN ENVIRONMENTAL REVOLUTION In January and February 1969, an oil spill devastated the Santa Barbara Channel in California. The residents of the coastal city had warned authorities about the potential for disaster, but their caution had gone unheeded.

A year later, an advocacy group led by Roderick Nash, a professor of history and environmental studies at the University of California Santa Barbara, penned the Santa Barbara Declaration of Environmental Rights.

“We PROPOSE A REVOLUTION in conduct toward an environment which is rising in revolt against us,” Nash wrote. “Granted that ideas and institutions long established are not easily changed; yet today is the first day of the rest of our life on this planet. WE WILL BEGIN ANEW.” Though the Cuyahoga River still suffers pollution from sewage overflows from cities on its banks,such as Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, it is nevertheless considered a success story. More than a dozen species of fish now swim in the river’s waters, even those especially susceptible to pollution, such as the steelhead trout and northern pike.

Further evidence of the restoration of the Cuyahoga Valley ecosystem was the dramatic return of nesting bald eagles to the area. Great blue herons have also staged a comeback.

A CRITICAL MOMENT Hayes worries, however, that the country will act too slowly to protect the environment from the next cataclysm.

“Air pollution and water pollution were both reversible,” he says. “But the effect of climate change may well be irreversible, and there is still a wave of denial that there’s any change occurring.”

He says America is a great counterpuncher, not as good on the offensive.

Even before the Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1969, the City of Cleveland had identified the problem and was at work cleaning up the pollution. Those efforts have been so successful that the river now supports more than a dozen species of fish and is safe for recreational use.

“Think Pearl Harbor. Think Sputnik. Our mobilization for World War II. Our race against the Russians to the moon. And so with the environment: What was unthinkable in 1968 became unstoppable by 1970."

Hayes has hopes for a second environmental revolution.

“There will be enormous, spectacular growth opportunities in the coming years for solar technologies, wind technologies, for batteries, for the use of hydrogen, for new kinds of vehicles,” he told The City Club of Cleveland.

I

n June 2018, Ohio basketball legend Katie Smith was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In September, she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, an honor bestowed upon only the best basketball players in the world.

Smith’s journey, from her family’s farm near Logan, Ohio, and horsing around with her two brothers, to the pinnacle of women’s basketball, has been nothing short of remarkable.

She led Logan High School to the state Final Four twice in four years in the early 1990s and was an integral part of the only Ohio State women’s basketball team ever to reach the Final Four, in 1993. After she left Ohio State, Smith dominated the fledgling women’s American Basketball League. When it folded, It all started for me in Logan, she moved on to become a star in the Women’s Ohio, playing basketball with National Basketball Association. If you combine brothers and their friends. her points scored in the American Basketball League with the points she scored during her Women’s National Basketball Association career, Smith ranks second alltime. (Without her American Basketball League points, she still ranks fifth in career scoring in the Women’s National Basketball Association.)

Basketball also carried her from Logan all the way to Poland and Turkey, and to a EuroLeague women’s tournament championship game in 2002.

Oh, and she collected three Olympic gold medals from 2000 through 2008 in Greece, Australia and Beijing as a member of USA Basketball’s women’s national team and played on two USA Basketball World Cup-winning teams.

“It all started for me in Logan, Ohio, playing basketball with my brothers and their friends,” Smith says by phone, “so I’m Ohio through and through. I was so lucky to go to Ohio State and become part of Buckeye Nation.”

Until sixth grade, she played basketball and football with the boys. There simply weren’t any girls’ teams until she got to the higher grades.

“I never got anyone asking, ‘Why is a girl out there?’ so I was lucky. None of the parents said, ‘Why is Katie beating up on my boy?’ Logan was perfect for me.”

THE GREATEST EVER Every accolade that comes Smith’s way is deserved, according to sportswriter Jim Massie, who covered the Ohio State women’s basketball team from 1997 through 2016 for The Columbus Dispatch.

“She is without question the greatest women’s player in Ohio State history, the most accomplished player to ever come through the program,” Massie says.

Smith left Ohio State as the leading women’s scorer in school history. When Jantel Lavender broke Smith’s record in 2011, Massie was there with pen and paper.

“I joked with Jantel, telling her, ‘It only took you 300 more shots than Katie took to break her record,’” Massie says. “She smiled.”

ALL BUSINESS BETWEEN THE LINES Smith is talkative, funny, smart and easygoing—the opposite of her demeanor on the court.

“She was mean and played to win,” Massie recalls.

“She could shoot it. She could play. I’d run into male sportswriters who looked down on me because I covered women’s basketball and I’d tell them, if you ever squared off against her, Katie Smith would take your lunch money every single time. Yeah, she would.”

Aaron Portzline, a sportswriter for The Athletic, covered Smith for The Columbus Dispatch in 1996 and 1997 during her playing days with the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League. He remembers her meanness on the court well.

“She was ferocious,” Portzline says. “I remember after a game I was interviewing a player from the opposing team, and she lifted her jersey up over her abdomen to show me the welts Katie left on her stomach trying to box her out for rebounds.”

When Smith was promoted from assistant to head coach of the Liberty in 2018, she told the Associated Press, "Bill (Laimbeer) always said, 'I think you're ready.' It doesn't mean it was my time.

It was always up to him, whether I'd be under him again or him leave." Another National Basketball Association star, Liberty team president Isaiah Thomas, said when he hired Smith, "It's a privilege to have the opportunity to promote Katie Smith— unquestionably one of the best ever to play the game of basketball."

Smith is currently in her second year as head coach of the Liberty.

ALL THE PLACES SHE’LL GO When she looks back on her career, Smith is taken aback by all the things she’s seen and experienced.

“It goes back to high school,” she says in an interview she conducted with the Ohio History Connection for the exhibit Ohio—Champion of Sports. “You know, my senior year we played in the state tournament at St. John Arena in Columbus. In the championship game, we played Pickerington High School and the place was sold out, nearly 13,000 fans. That was an incredible turnout for a high school women’s basketball game!”

Smith was renowned for her grit and toughness. She helped her teams win at times simply by playing harder than everyone else.

But not even 13,000 crazy high school basketball fans could prepare Smith for her playing days in Poland (2000–2001) and Turkey (2009).

“The fans were crazy,” she says. “They were rowdy, they brought noisemakers, sometimes they burned stuff. Sometimes there were fights. They were, um, passionate. When I was in Turkey, we had instances where our fans wouldn’t let the opposing team enter the gym.

“I’m aware of the disparity and when I’m hiring, I like to hire women coaches whenever it’s possible, whenever they’re the most qualified candidate for the job.”

Smith said she feels blessed to have had the career she’s had.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

“When I was at OSU I had laser focus on my schoolwork and on basketball,” she says. “Getting good grades was as important as playing well for me because during my first three years there was no professional basketball league in the U.S. for women. I was expecting to make a living based on my degree. I never thought it would take me until 2008 to get it.”

Asked if she would be interested someday in being a head coach in the National Basketball Association, Smith demurs.

The American Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball Association changed that, both launching in 1996.

“That’s not a route I’m interested in taking,” she says. “I want to be a better coach in the WNBA. The WNBA has been good to me, and I want to give back to the sport.”

“It’s been an amazing ride. Sometimes I stop and wonder, ‘How in the world did all of this happen?’” Smith says. “But sometimes life takes you on its own journey. I’m just thankful for all the opportunities.” –EM

She is concerned about the state of women’s coaching at all levels of basketball, especially at the college level. In 1972, before the gender equality law known as Title IX was passed, women made up 90 percent of the women’s basketball coaches. Today, that figure is at 40 percent.

“Men have two avenues to coaching, through the men’s and women’s basketball programs,” Smith says.

“But right now, women have only the one avenue, by coaching a women’s team either in college or the WNBA.” The issue is important to Smith.

Devo started making music videos in the mid-1970s, years before the beginning of MTV. The video they created for Whip It, their most popular single, became one of MTV’s first big hits and helped make this Akron-area group a national phenomenon.

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!

That was the title of their first album, released in July 1978. It was also their brash assertion that they were something totally different. They looked and sounded like no other band, even in the wild days of the punk and New Wave music explosion of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Whip It was a single from Devo’s third album, Freedom of Choice, and it was an unexpected hit. The first single from the album, Girl U Want, was a flop, despite the promotional efforts of the group’s record company, Warner Bros. Whip It caught on because a radio programmer in Florida liked it. Within a few days, the record was getting airplay throughout the Southeast and then in New York City.

Devo was on tour during the summer of 1980 when Whip It started climbing the charts. The group’s manager had to rebook their concerts in bigger venues because they were attracting so many fans.

But there was no video for Whip It. Devo had made one for Girl U Want and for the title song of the album Freedom of Choice, later released as a single. The group never imagined that Whip It would be a hit, so they quickly decided to capitalize on its popularity by making a video.

Devo was in the vanguard of the music video revolution. MTV didn’t go on the air until Aug. 1, 1981. Yet Devo had been making music videos since the mid-1970s, imagining that the future of music was as much visual as aural.

A decade before DVDs became a common consumer item in the mid1980s, there were laser discs. Mark Mothersbaugh, one of the founders of Devo, remembers a cover of Popular Science magazine with what looked like a 33 rpm vinyl record, “except it was silver and reflective.”

It seemed like the technology of the future for a group that told music critics Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum they “wanted to make films that used our songs.”

Devo jolted viewers with a video for a song from their debut album, a cover of the mega-hit Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale, Devo’s creative visionaries, were no Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Like the other members of the band, they wore screaming yellow jumpsuits, inspired

by Casale’s work for a janitorial supply company. They didn’t strut like Jagger, but lurched like robots while they turned the familiar melody of Satisfaction into what sounded like a transmission from another planet.

Devo didn’t want to be like the Stones or any other rock band. “I can see why many people were angry with us or frightened of us,” Mothersbaugh told Rolling Stone magazine.

Devo began not as a band but as a group of performance artists when Mothersbaugh and Casale were art

students at Kent State University.

Casale was on campus on May 4, 1970, during the protests against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia, when National Guard troops fired on demonstrators and killed four students, including two friends, Allison Krause and Jerry Miller. He told biographers Jade Dellinger and David Giffels that the shootings “completely and utterly changed my life.”

There were other reasons why Casale and Mothersbaugh became angry young men. During the 1970s, they saw what had been the industrial heartland of northeast Ohio become the Rust Belt. “Everybody worked for the factory,” Mothersbaugh, an Akron native, recalled in Rolling Stone, and it was “a very shocking thing” when Firestone, Goodyear and Goodrich started laying off workers. Cities decayed; the future seemed bleak.

The decline of industrial Ohio seemed to confirm the theory of deevolution, which inspired the name Devo. Mothersbaugh and Casale found inspiration in a 1920s antievolution pamphlet and insisted that human beings were declining from an initial state of perfection.

Their experience as art students attracted Mothersbaugh and Casale to “the high and the low.” In an oral history of the band available on YouTube, Casale said the band wanted “to combine the lofty ideas of art history and literature with the crassest, most ridiculous, most inane . . . expressions of pop culture.”

Their intention, as music writer Ian Steinberg explained, was to unsettle their audience by subverting “the accepted obvious reality behind anything we presented.”

Devo started performing in 1973. A shifting lineup eventually became settled, with Casale on bass, Mothersbaugh on keyboards, Mark’s brother Robert (Bob 1) on guitar, Jerry’s brother Robert (Bob 2) on rhythm guitar and Alan Myers on drums.

The result of their collaboration was “a multimedia artistic assault,” according to music writer Scott

“We started off at Akron speed,” Casale told the New Yorker, but by 1977 they were getting gigs in New York City. At one of those shows, David Bowie introduced Devo as “the band of the future.” The future was now when Devo began filming the video for Whip It. A group that had a cult following during the 1970s seemed on the verge of mainstream stardom at the start of the 1980s.

The set for the video was a dude ranch, but the band members hardly looked like cowboys. They wore sleeveless black turtlenecks and hats that resembled inverted plastic flowerpots. The idea for the headgear came from Casale’s experience in a Catholic grade school, where he would stare in boredom at the lighting fixtures on the ceiling. That art deco milk glass had become Devo red energy domes.

As the band members chanted, “whip it good,” Mothersbaugh did just that. He cracked a whip, each lash stripping away an article of clothing from a cringing woman who, finally, wore only a red corset.

The video reinforced misconceptions about the song’s origins. Whenever Devo did radio interviews, disc jockeys would make sly jokes about the supposed sexual references in Whip It. The inspiration for the song, however, didn’t come from the Marquis de Sade but from Thomas Pynchon and his parodies of selfhelp advice in the novel, Gravity’s Rainbow. The lyrics, like Pynchon’s satire, were all tongue-in-cheek.

“When a problem comes along/You must whip it. . . . When something’s gone wrong/You must whip it.”

For the video, Devo decided to make the S&M theme seem absurd. A story

Harding. Part of this assault was a quirky, expressionist short film, In the Beginning Was the End: The Truth About De-Evolution. Shot in Akron and Kent, the film shows band members in masks, performing a bizarre version of the hit song Secret Agent Man, and asking the musical question “Are we not men?”

in a sleazy men’s magazine, Dude, about a failed actor who started a dude ranch in Arizona gave Casale the idea for the video. Every day at noon the former actor would whip the clothes off his wife to attract visitors.

That bizarre story produced a legendary video. It created a swirl of controversy, with some critics alleging that the parody looked more like misogyny. But when MTV began broadcasting almost a year after Whip It fell off the pop charts, the video got new life. Videos were in short supply. Many people in the music business hadn’t seen the video future that Devo envisioned a half decade earlier. Whip It appeared in heavy rotation in the early days of MTV, giving millions of viewers an idea of the creative possibilities—and perils—of the music video.

And long after it vanished from MTV, Whip It lives on in popular culture. In one of its reincarnations, it became the theme song for Swiffer, a type of floor mop. “When you’ve got a dirty floor/You must swiff it.”

In 2006, the band members worked with Devo 2.0, child performers who sang revised versions of the original group’s songs on the Disney Channel. In 2007, Devo reunited and began producing new music and performing in concert. In 2018, the group was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

But the music video for Whip It was Devo’s most important accomplishment. They were not men when they made that video.

They were Devo.

Four examples of artifacts that the Antiquities Act was designed to protect on federal land.

History remains critical to our collective memory of the past through the present, and it moves us into the future.” —Grant Bruner May 1–31 being National Historic Preservation Month, Young Eyes on the Past is highlighting the work of Grant Bruner, an aspiring archaeologist and preservationist. Bruner attends Sycamore High School in Montgomery, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Since the age of 10, he’s been fascinated by Classical Greek and Roman history and archaeology.

The theme of Ohio History Day and National History Day in 2018 was Conflict and Compromise in History.

For his 2018 Ohio History Day project, Bruner turned his focus to archaeology and the history of archaeological protection in the U.S. His Ohio History Day essay evaluates the change in U.S. law regarding Native American sites and heritage from 1906 to the present day. In it, he examines how conflict and compromise among the federal government, state governments, local populations and Native American tribes dictated key tenets of archaeological protection.

In particular, he explores the Antiquities Act of 1906 and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 to see how different parties influenced the law.

With his winning Ohio History Day essay, Bruner qualified for the National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland, in June 2018, where he

finished in the top 20 in the category Senior Paper and received the Native American History Prize.

In the following excerpt, he explains the origins of the Antiquities Act of 1906 as it relates to the increased interest in Native American antiquities: The period of 1880–1910, the key decades preceding the American Antiquities Act, is known as a time of amplified public interest in Native American history and archaeology.

Public events such as the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904 brought both archaeology and Native American artifacts to the forefront and created an outcry for antiquities, no matter the provenance. To fill the demand for authentic artifacts, ‘pothunters,’ amateur excavators who wantonly dug for ancient relics to sell, became increasingly prominent in the American Southwest. These individuals, often local citizens, snuck onto federal lands, stealing precious artifacts of significance.

Native Americans were obviously most affected by these uncontrolled excavations and pothunting raids. To many Native Americans, the objects stolen were ‘central to (their) cultural belief system and way of life’ and were an irreplaceable ancestral inheritance.

Even seemingly ordinary objects held a special meaning based on their associated religious and cultural context and in some cases were considered sacred by tribal custom and law.

The Antiquities Act of 1906 was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 8, 1906. The legislation, our country’s first national historic preservation policy, authorized the president to ‘declare by public proclamation historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures and other objects of historic or scientific interest. . . to be national monuments.’

The Antiquities Act also granted

broad powers to the president, as it became the first U.S. law to give protection to a general kind of resource. [. . .]

The Antiquities Act, although noble in premise, failed to solve the conflict between individual citizens and federal agents over Native American artifacts. In impoverished communities, the sale of ancestral objects had become an increasingly necessary source of income in a cash economy. With prices as high as $600 for a single relic, pothunting ingrained itself as a source of income, and locals flagrantly disobeyed the federal laws.

Enforcement was so sporadic that as of 1931 ‘not a single pothunter had been convicted’ under the Antiquities Act. [. . .]

It wasn’t until the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 that the government would attempt to resolve the conflicts surrounding the Antiquities Act. What is certain is that the Antiquities Act and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act have forged a new age of protection and awareness. Through the extended cycle of conflict and compromise, the United States has prepared itself to face the challenges of protecting the country’s historical record now and for many generations into the future.

Ohio in Photographs: A Portrait of the Buckeye State by Ian Adams, Randall Lee Schieber and John Fleischman Ohio in Photographs: A Portrait of the Buckeye State captures the unique history and culture of Ohio in its large collection of pristine, high-quality photographs. The book, featuring the photographs of Ian Adams and Randall Lee Schieber, and the writing of John Fleischman, is a catalogue of photographs of famous Ohio landscapes, farms, flora and fauna, celebrations, events, monuments, government buildings, museums, historical sites and everything in between. Former Ohio governor John Kasich writes in the book’s forward that the book tries to capture both the “timeless natural beauty of Ohio” and the “modern-day landscapes and urban scenes” to show the “energetic, forward-looking state” of Ohio.

Adams and Schieber organize Ohio in Photographs by Ohio’s five geographic regions. Fleischman writes a compelling introduction for each region that details its incredible history, culture and personality, followed by the real star of this book, the photographs. Accompanied by a small description, each photograph is a beautiful, full-color snapshot of Ohio life. Ranging from a gorgeous shot of morning mist over the shore of Tappan Lake to the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati to the Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg and covering all 88 counties, no aspect of Ohio is left unexplored.

Ohio in Photographs is a call to exploration. It’s a call to experience all that Ohio has to offer. Adams, Schieber

and Fleischman compel readers to experience for themselves Ohio’s gorgeous nature, famous landmarks, remarkable festivals and events, growing cities and friendly people.

Indeed, John Kasich ends the forward echoing this statement, writing, “Enjoy these pages and let their portraits inspire you to get out and experience our beautiful Buckeye State and discover these wonders—and more— for yourself.”

Wild Ohio: The Best of Our Natural Heritage, by Jay McCormac and Gary Meszaros In the preface to Wild Ohio: The Best of Our Natural Heritage, author Jay McCormac writes, “Ohio is incredibly rich in biodiversity, possibly more than any Midwestern state.” McCormac’s writing and Gary Meszaros’s stunning photographs capture the state’s amazing biodiversity and vivid landscapes.

in Ohio and is “the result of many years of fieldwork” on the part of McCormac and Meszaros. The book is divided into Ohio’s five unique regions. All the regions and sites combine to paint a full picture of Ohio’s natural beauty with each site home to unique flora and fauna. McCormac’s vivid prose combines with Meszaros’s gorgeously shot photographs to make every site come alive on the page. If you’re captured by any site and feel compelled to visit, it’s easy, as every site in Wild Ohio is open to the public.

However, there’s an unfortunate reality beneath the surface. Despite how diverse Ohio is today, McCormac and

Meszaros explain it used to be much more so. In the past two centuries, the state has lost 90 percent of its original wetlands, a third of its flora is endangered, threatened or potentially threatened, and less than one percent of its original prairie remains.

Wild Ohio is a beautiful plea for conservation. Indeed, that’s exactly what Dr. James K. Bissel, director of conservation at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History writes in the book’s forward: “It’s my hope that this book will move people to support the statewide effort to steward and protect the best remaining examples of Ohio’s natural heritage.”
