STROKE

Awareness Month

By Roger Caldwell NNPA Newswire Contributor May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and it is very significant to me, because I am a stroke survivor. As a stroke survivor, I consider myself to be a miracle. One of my goals in life is to educate Americans (particularly Black men), that 80% of strokes can be prevented with knowledge and education. Strokes have the potential to be a silent killer, and nearly 85% of all strokes that occur show no warning signs. Although there are no major warning signs, there are risk factors, diseases, and health issues, which make an in-

dividual more susceptible to having a stroke. High blood pressure (hypertension) is the number one cause in the country for a stroke and it can be regulated with medicine, a proper diet, monitoring your blood pressure and a healthy lifestyle. “Healthcare in one of the wealthiest countries on the face of this earth is not a primary focus or concern. In this society, many people are not interested in improving their health. They prefer to take a chance and hope that health

Learn Your Numbers Know your numbers, take your medication, educate your children, and adult family members, and talk about your health. Visit a physician on a regular basis. Protest Against Police Brutality

Rapper Kodak Black Arrested

MIAMI (AP) – Officials say Florida rapper Kodak Black was arrested on federal and state weapons charges just before he was to perform at a hip-hop festival. The U.S. Marshals office says in a news release that the 21-year-old Black was taken into custody Saturday at the Rolling Loud Music Festival at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The statement didn’t elaborate. Authorities say Black will make an initial appearance in Miami federal court Monday. Court records don’t list a lawyer for him. His real name is Bill Kapri. The rapper has been arrested numerous times previously, including last month on drug and weapons charges as he crossed from Canada into the U.S. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Miami-Dade County police were also involved in the most recent arrest.

Dennis Rodman Accused of Stealing

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) – The owner of a Southern California yoga studio is accusing Dennis Rodman of helping three people steal more than $3,500 in merchandise from his business. Ali Shah says security cameras captured the former NBA star walking into Vibes Hot Yoga in Newport Beach on Tuesday with his alleged accomplices. Shah said the four worked together to distract an employee so they could steal clothes and a 400-pound (181-kilogram) amethyst crystal from the front desk. Shah said Rodman returned Wednesday and tried to distract a different employee while a female companion grabbed clothes that were on display. Police told the Los Angeles Times they were investigating the matter and no one has been arrested. Rodman told TMZ that the studio’s owner offered him the clothes as gifts in exchange for moving the crystal.

Attorney and activist Ben Crump, Broward/Fort Lauderdale NAACP president Marsha Ellison, National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., Westside Gazette Publisher Bobby Henry and the late Trayvon Martin’s Mother Sybrina Fulton, were among the many to participate in the march.

Delucca “Lucca” Rolle, the 15-year-old high school student who was punched and had his head slammed against the concrete by law enforcement officers last month, joined his attorney and several prominent civil rights activists in a peaceful demonstration in Florida to denounce police brutality. By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent Delucca “Lucca” Rolle, the 15-year-old high school student who was punched and had his head slammed against the concrete by law enforcement officers last month, joined his attorney and several prominent civil rights activists in a peaceful demonstration in Florida to denounce police brutality. Rolle and others chanted, “Justice will be served,” as they marched toward New Mount Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale.

“Our children’s lives matter. No one seems to understand that but us,” said Fulton, whose unarmed son, 17-year-old Trayvon, was shot and killed in Miami Gardens in 2012 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman simply because he “looked suspicious” and was wearing a hoodie. “So, we have to fight for our children,” Fulton said. The NNPA was “pleased to join in with the NAACP, Black Clergy, and Florida elected officials to protest the racially-motivated and vicious police assault on Delucca Rolle in Fort Lauderdale,” said Chavis, a longtime civil rights activist and member of the famed Wilmington Ten, a group who were wrongly arrested and convicted in 1971 of various charges. After serving nearly a decade in prison, Chavis and the group were exonerated and ultimately pardoned. “We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Broward County Officers Christopher Krickovich and Greg LaCerra,” Chavis said. Last month, Rolle, an African American, was pepper-sprayed, punched and had his head slammed against concrete by Broward County Sheriff’s deputies Krickovich and Sgt. LaCerra, who are white. Rolle suffered a fractured nose in the incident which occurred after the teen attempted to recover a cell phone of another teen after a fight. The incident was caught on video and sparked a firestorm after it was shared on social media.

Sheriff Greg Tony suspended the two officers, but many, including some local elected officials, said they should face criminal prosecution. “We will not stop until those officers are fired and charged,” Broward/Fort Lauderdale NAACP president Marsha Ellison said. “We will remember the choices [Tony] makes when it comes to justice for Lucca,” Ellison said of the sheriff who, like the local District Attorney, is up for re-election in 2020. Henry, whose Westside Gazette newspaper has continued to be a strong voice for the African American community throughout Broward County, said attending the march and calling for justice for Rolle is important. “To have an iconic Black History freedom fighter in Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., to join us in this march was like a step into time when black people felt important, stood up for each other and weren’t going to let anyone turn us around,” Henry said. “Say it loud, I’m Black and I’m proud, was a shot to the bodies that vibrated to the core as everyone Black, white, brown, young and older, male and female, were in unison in reaffirming our pledge to continue our fight for justice against police brutality,” he said. Henry continued: “We will march from the streets right into the court houses. This was a wake-up call and it ain’t over yet.”

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) – A Maryland police officer was recorded using a racist slur to refer to several detained black men. News outlets report Montgomery County police are investigating the Thursday incident, which was livestreamed on Instagram by one of the men. Police were called to a Silver Spring McDonald’s on Thursday morning for a report of trespassing. Responding officers questioned the black men and searched their belongings. The department released body camera video Thursday. One man calls the officers the slur, and a blond white officer uses the slur to refer back to the men. The man says the woman probably wouldn’t use the slur if she wasn’t wearing her badge. The officer says she’s just repeating the man’s words. Acting police Chief Russ Hamill says mimicking another person’s language is no excuse.

FB Pays US Content Reviewers More SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Facebook is raising how much it pays U.S. contractors who do some of its most taxing work, including watching violent and other objectionable material for possible removal from the service. Facebook will pay at least $18 an hour for these jobs. Those in New York City, Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area will get $22 per hour. Facebook didn’t immediately respond to inquiries on what it was paying them before. The content review jobs are psychologically taxing. Facebook has been criticized for not paying the workers enough and not providing enough support. Facebook said Monday it’s adding tools for content moderators to have graphic images blurred out or shown in black and white before they see it. The company says it’s looking into “similar standards’’ outside the U.S.

Limit Workload of Public Defenders

“I have introduced the EQUAL Defense Act to give public defenders the tools they need to ensure a more effective criminal justice system and to deliver on Gideon’s promise,” said U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Wednesday introduced the Ensuring Quality Access to Legal Defense (EQUAL Defense) Act of 2019. The legislation aims to support public defender systems, which are straining to uphold the constitutional right to counsel for indigent defendants as required by the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Gideon v. Wainwright decision. “After spending my career around the criminal justice system, I’ve seen up close how it can fail to ensure that poor defendants receive a fair trial and due process, as guaranteed to all of us in our Constitution,” said Sen. Harris. “All too often, our public defenders are overworked and lack sufficient resources. This makes public defense unsustainable over the long haul. And the person who suffers is the defendant, whose liberty is on the line. It’s wrong, and it’s the opposite of justice.” “I have introduced the EQUAL Defense Act to give public defenders the tools they need to ensure a more effective criminal justice system and to deliver on Gideon’s promise,” Harris added. The EQUAL Defense Act is supported by Jon Rapping, President & Founder of Gideon’s Promise. “Public defenders have largely been ignored in the national conversation around criminal justice reform,” said Rapping. “The EQUAL Defense Act of 2019 is a recognition that public defenders must be an important part of

our criminal justice reform thinking. I am hopeful that this Act prompts us all to continue to understand public defenders as a critical piece of the criminal justice solution, and to build on its important foundation to ensure marginalized communities have the advocates necessary to fulfill our democratic promise of equal justice,” Rapping added. In 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Gideon v. Wainwright recognized the constitutional right to counsel to anyone accused of criminal wrongdoing and unable to afford their own attorney. But in today’s criminal justice system, public defenders are too often unable to uphold Gideon’s promise because they lack critical resources. The EQUAL Defense Act will provide financial support for public defense systems and training programs that aim to improve the delivery of legal services to indigent criminal defendants. The bill: • Creates a new $250 million grant program to fund public defense, including establishing: • Workload limits for full-time public defenders. • Pay parity between public defenders and prosecutors within five years.

• Annual data on public defender workloads, including the number of hours worked per month and the percentage of hours worked per month across a range of tasks. • Authorizes $5 million for non-profit and government organizations to provide comprehensive training for public defenders. • Reauthorizes the student loan repayment program, increases the overall authorization amount from $25 million to $75 million, and increases per borrower repayment limits. • Requires Byrne-JAG recipients to provide data about the extent to which the state is providing public defenders to those in need. The EQUAL Defense Act is supported by Gideon’s Promise, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), National Association for Public Defense (NAPD), National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Lawyers’ Committee for Civil and Human Rights, Color of Change, and Project on Government Oversight (POGO).

Committee Passes Bills

WASHINGTON – This week, the House Financial Services Committee, held a markup of five bills and two resolutions to promote responsible innovation through financial technology, crack down on money laundering and illicit finance, protect small businesses and investors, and uphold consumer protections. See the legislation below. • HR 1988, the Protect Affordable Mortgages for Veterans Act of 2019, bipartisan legislation which would ensure that a group of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) loans which were inadvertently made ineligible for securitization by Ginnie Mae are made eligible, and thereby enabling those banks to make additional loans, including to veterans.

This bill was introduced by Rep. David Scott (D-GA) and Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY). It was approved on a voice vote. • HR 2409, the Expanding Access to Capital for Rural Job Creators Act, bipartisan legislation that would require the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to identify unique challenges rural small businesses face in securing capital, and to describe the most serious issues that these businesses and their investors face in its annual report to Congress.

This bill was introduced by Rep. Cindy Axne (D-IA) and Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV). It was approved on a voice vote.

• HR 2514, the Coordinating Oversight, Upgrading and Innovating Technology, and Examiner Reform Act (COUNTER Act), bipartisan legislation that closes loopholes in the Bank Secrecy Act, increases penalties for those who break the law, and helps provide financial institutions with new tools to fulfill their obligations under the law.

This bill was introduced by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) and Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH). It was passed by a vote of 55-0. • HR 2515, the Whistleblower Protection Reform Act, bipartisan legislation that expands whistleblower protections by amending Dodd-Frank to clarify that whistleblowers who report misconduct to their employers and not to the SEC also have protections against retaliation under the law.

This bill was introduced by Rep. Al Green (D-TX) and Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI). It was approved on a voice vote. • HR 2534, the Insider Trading Prohibition Act, legislation that creates a clear definition of illegal insider trading under securities laws so that there is a codified, consistent standard for courts and participants in financial markets, and to better protect the hard-earned savings of millions of Americans.

This bill was introduced by Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT). It was approved on a voice vote. • Resolutions Establishing Two Committee Task Forces • Resolution #1: Establishes the Task Force on Financial Technology, which will examine the current legal framework for fintech, how fintech is used in lending and how consumers engage with fintech. The Chair of the task force will be Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA).

This resolution was adopted by unanimous consent. • Resolution #2: Establishes the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence or “AI”, which will examine the impact of automation and machine learning and how companies and consumers can use AI to improve their lives. The Chair of the task force will be Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL).
This resolution was adopted by unanimous consent. At the request of Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), the Committee postponed further consideration of H.R. 2513, the Corporate Transparency Act of 2019, which was introduced by Rep. Maloney (D-NY) and Rep. Peter King (R-NY), until the next full Committee markup.

Another case of Alzheimer’s By Bill Fletcher, Jr. NNPA Newswire Contributor When I looked at my email in-box this afternoon, I encountered one of those messages that I dread: yet another person I know has been institutionalized as a result of Alzheimer’s. The sadness conveyed by this person’s partner was clear in their words. They had been together for decades. I could feel the loss. By coincidence, around the same time that I read this email I found myself looking at commentaries regarding Trump’s budget proposals. Drastic cuts in everything except for the military. Though this may, at first glance, seem to have nothing to do with Alzheimer’s, think again. Currently, Alzheimer’s is afflicting at least 6 million people in the USA; it is expected to expand to more than double that by the middle of the 21st century. Yet addressing Alzheimer’s appears to not be a priority of the White House.

The implications of the increase in Alzheimer’s patients goes far beyond the personal loss and sadness experienced by families. We are talking about immense healthcare costs. As I have witnessed in my extended family, an individual who is otherwise healthy can suffer a long and slow decline that can be not only emotionally intolerable for all involved but immensely expensive, sometimes to the point of personal bankruptcy. Yet, this is not an affliction that the White House, to borrow from a recent article in STAT [“Like Nixon’s ‘war on cancer,’ President Trump should open a war on Alzheimer’s” https://www.statnews.com/2019/02/05/presidenttrump-should-open-war-on-alzheimers/]. Fighting Alzheimer’s necessitates significant financial investments in order to advance the development of possible treatments. This will not happen on its own and one cannot rely on the private market to invest. The private market is more often than not cowardly regarding investments until and unless they get a signal from government that there is a genuine interest in a possible direction. Many of my friends over the age of 50 dread the possibility that they may become victims of Alzheimer’s. In each case most of us feel on our own in addressing this plague. We have seen it not only destroy individuals but take down entire families. It is well past time that the government make this a priority. Fighting Alzheimer’s vs. another weapon system we don’t need? Not a difficult choice. Bill Fletcher, Jr. is the former president of TransAfrica Forum. Mass Incarceration Continued from page A1

black women incarcerated has fallen by nearly 50 percent. The most recent report from the Prison Policy Initiative revealed that, looking at the big picture shows that a staggering number of women who are incarcerated are not even convicted with one quarter of the women behind bars having not yet gone to trial. Sixty-percent of women under the control of local authorities have not been convicted of a crime and adding to the picture of women in local jails, aside from women under local jurisdictions, state and federal agencies pay local jails to house an additional 13,000 women, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. For example, ICE and the U.S. Marshals, which have fewer dedicated facilities for their detainees, contract with local jails to hold roughly 5,000 women – so the number of women physically held in jails is even higher. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, avoiding pre-trial incarceration is uniquely challenging for women. The number of un-convicted women stuck in jail is surely not because courts are considering women, who are generally the primary caregivers of children, to be a flight risk, according to the Prison Policy Initiative report. The far more likely answer is that incarcerated women, who have lower incomes than incarcerated men, have an even harder time affording cash bail. When the typical bail amounts to a full year’s income for women, it’s no wonder that women are stuck in jail awaiting trial, the report’s author said. Even once convicted, the system funnels women into jails: About a quarter of convicted incarcerated women are held in jails, compared to about 10 percent of all people incarcerated with a conviction. Also, while stays in jail are generally shorter than in stays in prison, jails make it harder to stay in touch with family than prisons do. Phone calls are more expensive, up to $1.50 per minute, and other forms of communication are more restricted – some jails don’t even allow real letters, limiting mail to postcards. This is especially troubling given that 80 percent of women in jails are mothers, and most of them are primary caretakers of their children. Thus children are particularly susceptible to the domino effect of burdens placed on incarcerated women, the report’s author said. Black and American Indian women are markedly overrepresented in prisons and jails, according to the report. Incarcerated women are 53 percent White, 29 percent Black, 14 percent Hispanic, 2.5 percent American Indian and Alaskan Native, 0.9 percent Asian, and 0.4 percent Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. “While we are a long way away from having data on intersectional impacts of sexuality and race or ethnicity on women’s likelihood of incarceration, it is clear that Black and lesbian or bisexual women are disproportionately subject to incarceration,” Prison Policy Initiative Author Aleks Kajstura said. Three out of four women under control of any U.S. correctional system are on probation, according to Kajstura. Probation is often billed as an alternative to incarceration, but instead it is frequently set with unrealistic conditions that undermine its goal of keeping people from being locked up, she wrote for the Prison Policy Initiative. For example, probation often comes with steep fees, which, like bail, women are in the worst position to afford. Failing to pay these probation fees is often a violation of probation. Childcare duties further complicate probation requirements that often include meetings with probation officers, especially for women with no extra money to spend on babysitters or reliable transportation across town. “All of these issues make women particularly vulnerable to being incarcerated not because they commit crimes, but because they run afoul of one of the burdensome obligations of their probation supervision,” Kajstura said. Still, she noted in the report that the picture of women’s incarceration is far from complete, and many questions remain about mass incarceration’s unique impact on women. “Based on our analysis in this report, we know that a quarter of incarcerated women are un-convicted,” she wrote in the report. Kajstura continued: “But is that number growing? And how do the harms of that unnecessary incarceration intersect with women’s disproportionate caregiving to impact families? “Beyond these big picture questions, there are a plethora of detailed data points that are not reported for women by any government agencies, such as the simple number of women incarcerated in U.S. Territories or involuntarily committed to state psychiatric hospitals because of justice system involvement.”

New Orleans: Dining & Touring Around 2019 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

Plan a late April or early May vacation to New Orleans around the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and your opportunities for enriching yourself with NOLA’s wonderful culture grow exponentially. By Dwight Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Plan a late April or early May vacation to New Orleans around the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and your opportunities for enriching yourself with NOLA’s wonderful culture grow exponentially. When you’re not at the Fair Grounds listening to your favorite artists, you get to explore the city. Concerts begin around 12pm and end by 7pm, so you can tour by day and dine out at night. Get around town, and you’ll find that people on the streets often say hello. The neighborhoods (French Quarter, Garden District, Tremé, City Park) are either lively or calm and often shrouded with stately oversized oak, cypress and magnolia trees. Greek revival, Colonial and Victorian houses are so beautiful you’ll be tempted to buy one. And bars stay open to the wee hours—some all night—so If you’re looking for a good time, you will find it. Eat like a king or queen. Commander’s Palace — This James Beard Foundation Award-winning Haute Creole restaurant is easily one of NOLA’s most famous. Dating back to 1893, it was remodeled in 1969, adding large windows so customers could enjoy the view. How good are the chefs at Commander’s? This is the place that launched famed Chef Emeril Lagasse’s career. Come here on a night when you feel like an elegant meal with impeccable service. The dining rooms are just formal enough to make you feel like royalty, but friendly enough for you to have a good time. Located in the tony Garden District, a trip here will give you a chance to experience a neighborhood other than the famed French Quarter. TIPS: • It’s hard to choose appetizers but go with either the Shrimp & Tasso Henican (set in 5 pepper jelly and Crystal hot sauce beurre blanc), or the adventurous Chili and Lemongrass Glazed Alligator. • Pecan Roasted Gulf Fish is hearty and light, as is the flavorful Black Skillet Roasted Halibut entrees. • Throw caution out the door for dessert. Feast on the Creole Cream Cheese Cheesecake or Pecan Pie à la Mode. SoBou – Set on picturesque Rue Chartres in the French Quarter, and attached to the W Hotel (free parking!), this contemporary Creole restaurant is away from heavy foot traffic on Bourbon Street. It has a low-key and refined atmosphere that attracts sophisticated adults. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to the streets. People flock here for the food, drinks and ambiance. The signature cocktail is the Taylor Bird Sazerac, which is the rage of NOLA: Rye,

brandy, bitters, Steen’s cane syrup and Herbsaint rinse. It’s a nice way to set yourself up for a swank dinner and memorable evening. TIPS: • How does Wild Shrimp Crawfish Boil Beignets sound for an appetizer? • For dinner, their NOLA Style BBQ Shrimp “Shortcake” is served with a buttermilk biscuit and the Rustic Griddle Seared Gulf Fish is topped with a brandy flambeed brown butter. • You’ve probably never heard of a Bread Pudding Lollipop. But now you have. Taste the Toulouse Red Absinthe Soaked Strawberries, too. Brennan’s – That very attractive pink Vieux Carre building (circa 1795) at 417 Royal Street in the French Quarter is the home of the iconic establishment Brennan’s. This is the restaurant that launched the Brennan culinary dynasty back in 1946. The old-world charm and setting with modern NOLA cooking and precision service are the hallmarks of this classic dining experience. It’s best known for its nearly daylong and elaborate brunches, but dinner here is an equal treasure. After dinner or brunch, take a tour of the restaurant that invented the flaming dessert Bananas Foster. It’s steeped in history. TIPS:

• For starters, the Chicken Fried Sweetbreads with a Bacon-sherry Jus is as delicate as the Louisiana Seafood Filé Gumbo is hearty. • There is something so tasty about the Rhubarb Glazed Lamb with its Piri Piri Spiced Lamb Rib Pithivier and Spring Vegetables, or the Raviolo of Chevre & Sheep Feta. • Bananas Foster is an obvious choice and the Seasonal Sorbet is refreshing. Palace Café — If you’re staying downtown in a hotel on Canal Street, that makes the Palace Café at 605 Canal a convenient excursion. The two-story restaurant looks like a French bistro, with a dazzling and dramatic central, spiral staircase that adds to the room’s allure. If you’re lucky, at some point during your meal, the lively Jay-Ray & Gee acapella singers will weave through the brasserie taking requests and singing in perfect harmony. Ask them to sing the classic soul song “Up on the Roof ” and they will do it with special verve. It’s easy to take the warmth of the Palace with you when you leave. TIPS: • The signature starter is the light and fluffy Crabmeat Cheesecake, which is something like a quiche, only soft and more flavorful. • The Andouille Crusted Fish entrée is covered with Andouille breadcrumbs, roasted and comes with a chive aioli. • You won’t go wrong with the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée or White Chocolate Bread Pudding. Dooky Chase’s Restaurant — This classic soul food restaurant dates back to 1941, when it was a sandwich shop

in the Tremé district. Over the years, restaurateur Leah Chase has turned it into NOLA’s must-dine restaurant. History lurks in every corner, as back in the ‘60s, upstairs at Dooky’s was a meeting place for Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King and other social activists who would strategize their fight for civil rights. James Baldwin, Sarah Vaughn, Quincy Jones and President Barack Obama have all dined at this landmark. Dooky’s is to NOLA what Sylvia’s is to NYC; it’s a community treasure where local politicians gather along with locals and tourists. TIPS: • The restaurant is opened daily for a lunch buffet or a la carte orders and serves dinner on Friday nights. Plan accordingly. • Crispy fried chicken, red beans and rice, Shrimp Clemenceau and lima beans are staples. • The Peach Cobbler with a scoop of ice cream is a nice way to put a smile on your face. Things to Do City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center — Tennis pro Corey Clarke has been a coach at this well-run and friendly tennis center for decades. Take a lesson with him, or the other pros, and you can play on any of the 26 lighted courts, which include 16 hard courts, 10 clay courts and also a practice court with two backboards. The complex is part of the 1,300-acre City Park, which is just a 15-minute drive from downtown. Tennis in City Park dates back to 1922. The 3700 sq. ft Clubhouse dates back to 2011. Tennis has come a long way in NOLA and playing here is a nice way to meet locals. TIPS: • If you don’t have anyone to play with there’s always the Monday Night: Tennis “Drop In” Doubles ($8). • Tuesday Night: Advanced Adult Tennis Clinic 6:30 - 9 pm ($25). • Wednesday Night: Beginner Adult Tennis Clinic 6:30 - 8 pm ($25) and Intermediate Adult Tennis Clinic 8 - 9:30 pm ($25). New Orleans Museum of Art – NOMA is just down the road from the Pepsi Tennis Center in City Park. New Orleans’ largest museum was built in 1911. These days the vast gallery is filled with a permanent collection of over 40,000 artifacts. Next to paintings by Renoir, Degas and Picasso are works by local artists from the city and state. Exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, glass, furniture, ceramics and crafts are augmented by a strong collection of over 12,000 photographs. You can walk around and gaze on your own, or take a guided tour to get the inside scoop on the artists and their work. Recent exhibitions include Bondye: Between and Beyond (12 sequined prayer flags inspired by the religious Haitian rituals of Vodou) and Timothy Duffy: Blue Muse (tintype portraits of American musicians, some of them are black blues musicians.) TIPS: • Stroll around the foot paths at the five-acre Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. • The Gold Log Cabin exhibit glistens and has eye-catching textures. You have to take a photo (no flash). • In 2018, Ndubuisi C. Ezeluomba, PhD. became the Françoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art. The fruits of his labor can be found on the 3rd floor in the museum’s permanent Africa Art collection. Topnotch cuisine. Tennis in a multi-purpose park. African Art in a city that celebrates its African connections. And a whole lot of music too! It’s guaranteed, if you come to NOLA for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, or any other time of the year, you’ll have a great time. And if you come back again, you will feel like you’re returning home.

Al Green in concert (YouTube Screen Capture)

Soul Legend Al Green Needs New York Do Over By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent
When it comes to pop music concerts, there aren’t many who would make this writer as excited as the great Al Green. Excited enough to travel two hours to the heart of the Big Apple to see the legend at Radio City Music Hall, where tickets were priced as much as $400 – not to mention the $26 for two drinks which in the end turned out to be badly needed, and the ransom it costs to pay New Jersey Turnpike and Lincoln Tunnel tolls. You also need a mortgage payment to park in New York, but that goes with the territory. But, because it’s Al Green, and there’s little doubt that the “I’m Still in Love With You” crooner is one of the most accomplished pop and soul artists of his generation. He’s more than a legend in a world where that term is used quite loosely – particularly with greats like Prince, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston all having passed way too soon. One would be hard pressed to find a superstar with more memorable hits than the erstwhile Reverend Green. However, Green, who in in the midst of an abbreviated 8-city concert tour, might consider a redo of the sold out show he performed at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, May 5. While he performed much of what the amped up crowd came to see – “Love and Happiness,” “Let’s Stay Together,” and “Tired of Being Alone” – the show encountered a myriad of problems. Scheduled to begin immediately after an 8 pm 3-song opening act, Green didn’t take the stage until nearly 9:30 and his microphone either had a disturbingly low volume or it wasn’t on at all. Once that problem was fixed, things didn’t quite im-

prove. A visibly winded Green consistently had trouble completing any of his signature songs and, at times, even his background singers appeared lost. At times it even appeared he’d forgotten the words while in other instances Green sauntered over to a table mid-song to consume Gatorade or other liquids. As the band launched into the iconic “Let’s Stay Together,” Green inexplicably sat down near his bass player sans the black suit jacket he’d worn on stage while two identically dressed young men appeared on stage. One of them picked up Green’s jacket as if he were doing house cleaning – turns out they were dancers who performed a line-dance during “Let’s Stay Together,” as Green handed out roses to mostly young women who’d come to the edge of the stage. As he appeared to look in a different direction, Green suggested he was not aware when a tall man reached for one of the roses. “Oh! You a guy!,” Green said, before making a Seinfeld-like save, “not that anything’s wrong with it.” During another signature hit, “For the Good Times,” the hitmaker appeared not aware that he was singing too far from his microphone and a visibly frustrated sound technician – sitting a couple of rows in front of this reporter – waved his arms in exasperation as he attempted to get Green to sing into his microphone. The 1-hour-plus show, which patrons paid as much as $400 per ticket, was shockingly an unmitigated disaster. As he sang, “How Do you Mend a Broken Heart?” Green should understand that the answer to that question is quite simple for those who attended the Radio City Music Hall show: authorize refunds or give his die-hard New York fans a do over.

Shaw University Officially Names Dillard as 18th President Dr. Paulette R. Dillard said she’s thankful and committed to intentional leadership of Shaw University as “we continue to grow as an institutional leader in the Raleigh community and globally abroad.” (Photo courtesy Shaw University)

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent
After the pomp and circumstance that greeted the official announcement of Dr. Paulette R. Dillard taking the helm at Shaw University, she settled into her office to continue to put in motion her primary objectives for the historically black college.

“The major objective that we have here at Shaw is to make sure that we create the relevance for Shaw that, in what we do, answers that question that keeps surfacing and that causes every HBCU president to bristle – and that is, ‘Are we still relevant,’” Dillard told NNPA Newswire. On May 2, Dillard formally received investiture as the

liberal arts school’s 18th president. She received the ceremonial mace, the custom President’s Medallion, and presidential regalia after a “Women Who Lead” Awards Luncheon in Shaw’s historic Estey Hall. The luncheon honored Dillard, North Carolina Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynthia Marshall, and McDonald’s owner/operator Deborah Holder. The celebration culminated with a performance by Dillard’s friend, Grammy Award-winner, Peabo Bryson. “We want to adapt the university so that it’s clear what its relevance continues to be,” Dillard said. That means that, given the challenges of higher education — and HBCUs in particular — we have to make sure that the education we’re providing transforms the lives of the students that we have,” she said. Dillard continued: “The curriculum most be more robust and we have to find a way to fund education that’s so critical for these young people so that the two primary objectives we have right now are to identify sources of funding that guarantee every child that wants a college education can have one, and do so without incurring a mountain of debt.”

“We want to adapt the university so that it’s clear what its relevance continues to be,” Dillard said. A Mount Airy, North Carolina native, Dillard graduated from Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. She holds a Masters of Business Administration from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and a Masters of Science in Biology from Tennessee State University. Dillard earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Clark Atlanta University. Dillard has held senior leadership positions at GlaxoSmithKline, Quest Diagnostics and Clark Atlanta University’s Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development. “Neither of my parents were college graduates, so I’m the first college graduate in my immediate family although my sister became a great educator,” Dillard said. “But that wasn’t my path. It was really science… I wanted to be a researcher and I wanted to work in labs so that’s what I majored in and that’s what I did for 25 years,” she said. However, as she excelled in Science, Dillard said she found herself consistently being promoted into administrative roles and, in her personal life, she had been a Sunday school teacher and a youth director. “I did that and after 25 years it was time to give back,” Dillard said. “I decided that I wanted to teach and I had a desire to use myself as a role model for young people to show that you could attend an HBCU like many others and you can go on to have a career of your dreams,” she said. Joseph N. Bell, Jr., the chairman of Shaw’s board of trustees said the board believes Shaw’s performance to date, including her term as interim president, “has demonstrated that she is committed to the transformative education process and more than qualified to lead Shaw University into this next era of excellence.” Dillard said she’s thankful and committed to intentional leadership of Shaw University as “we continue to grow as an institutional leader in the Raleigh community and globally abroad.” “Shaw University is the place that, when you step on this campus, you are a known entity and we have this belief that every individual who comes here, we have a commitment to make sure that we address your needs as a student – meaning the whole person not just your academic journey.” Dillard continued: “We want you to be the individual that you are and we’re not trying to make you a cookie-cutter college student with just the experience of college, but we want to help you find your passion and your voice. We want you to become the product that HBCUs set out to create in every person that comes in.”

Lack of Teacher Diversity Hurts Our Students

By Jesse Aguilar South Kern Sol The lack of teacher diversity in the Kern High School District hurts all of our students. It is hurting students of color who often have teachers who do not understand their life experiences, and it is hurting our white students who leave high school unprepared for the diverse university and work environments of California. Put simply, we cannot succeed as a school district that promotes success for all students until we hire and retain more teachers of color. How do I know? Because I have seen the dynamics of race play out in every classroom and in every principal’s office over the last 24 years as a teacher in the Kern High School District. The history of racism runs deep in our country, and although none of us caused it, we all have a responsibility to acknowledge it still exists, to address it, and to remedy its present-day manifestations. We need a teacher body that is reflective of the diverse student population. We need to give students an opportunity to see themselves in the teachers that stand before them at the front of the class every day. We need to give our students the advantages a diverse teacher pool brings. Social science research shows teachers of color are more likely to have high expectations of students of color and less likely to see behavioral problems in those students. They see themselves in their students. This in turn gives students of color a chance to feel seen and understood, which makes them more likely to study hard, listen to their teachers, and do well in their classes. Having teachers of color is also important to the development of white students. Teachers of color break down pernicious racial stereotypes that still exist in our society and help white students learn how to work with people from different backgrounds — a critical skill for life in the 21st century. The District itself acknowledges the importance of diversity. One of their LCAP goals has been to “recruit, hire, develop and retain […] an effective teaching staff demographically reflective of the diverse student body at K H S D .” T h e ques-

Celebrate Safely by Securing Metallic Balloons PG&E to Graduates:

STROKE

Awareness Month

Learn Your Numbers

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — California’s graduation season has begun and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is warning customers about the public safety risks associated with helium-filled metallic balloons. If your graduation celebration involves balloons, make sure they are secured with a weight. Otherwise they can float away and come into contact with overhead power lines, causing a public safety risk. In the first four months of 2019, metallic balloons striking electric lines have caused nearly 120 power outages in PG&E’s service area alone, disrupting service to more than 65,000 customers. These power outages can interrupt electric service to critical facilities such as hospitals, schools and traffic lights. “Graduation season is a happy time for California students and families, filled with school commencements and celebrations. But the mass balloon releases we often see at graduation ceremonies can quickly put a damper on the fun. When metallic balloons make contact with power lines, they can cause widespread power outages and jeopardize public safety. We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and secure metallic balloons with a weight,” said Mike Kress, PG&E’s Senior Director of Electric Distribution Operations. Metallic balloons have a silvery coating, which is a conductor for electricity. If the balloons float away and make contact with power lines, they can short transformers, cause power outages and melt electrical wires, causing

public safety risks. Last June, more than 6,000 San Francisco customers were without power after metallic balloons released during a graduation ceremony came into contact with overhead power lines. PG&E tends to see an increase in balloon-caused outages during graduation season. To help ensure that graduation balloon celebrations are enjoyed responsibly, PG&E reminds customers to follow these important balloon safety tips: • “Look Up and Live!” Use caution and avoid celebrating with metallic balloons near overhead electric lines. • Make sure helium-filled metallic balloons are securely tied to a weight that is heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Never remove the weight. • When possible, keep metallic balloons indoors. Never permit metallic balloons to be released outside, for everyone’s safety. • Do not bundle metallic balloons together. • Never attempt to retrieve any type of balloon, kite or toy that becomes caught in a power line. Leave it alone, and immediately call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 to report the problem. • Never go near a power line that has fallen to the ground or is dangling in the air. Always assume downed electric lines are energized and extremely dangerous. Stay far away, keep others away and immediately call 911 to alert the police and fire departments. issues will resolve themselves. I was not taking care of myself and not taking the necessary steps to correct my health problems. This is a major crisis confronting this country today,” says Roger Caldwell in his book, “The Inspiring Journey of a Stroke Survivor.” It is obvious with the recent news of the passing of actor Luke Perry (52), and director John Singleton (51), who both died suddenly of massive strokes, that something is wrong with the healthcare system. Both of these men were very successful, and if 80% of strokes are preventable, I would have expected these two men to have received the best medical care, but they are gone. When I had my stroke, I was well aware that I had hypertension, but I was still not taking my prescribed medication. I was walking around with a time bomb. At any time, I knew the bomb could explode but I took a chance. Eventually, it exploded but I lived, and now part of my responsibility is to educate Americans about strokes with a primary focus on African Americans. After having my stroke, I was completely paralyzed on the entire right side. I spent the next seven weeks in rehabilitation relearning basic tasks: How to dress myself, how to talk, how to write with my left hand, and how to graduate from a wheelchair to a cane. My efforts paid off, but I did not recover 100%. All Americans must know more about stroke prevention and awareness, and they should know their personal numbers as well as their family members’ numbers.

As a culture and community, Black Americans have the highest incidence of high blood pressure, with 1 out of 2 adults having some form of hypertension. May is stroke awareness month, and it is essential to understand the mechanics of blood pressure and what the numbers represent. The higher number is the systolic number, and it represents the active portion of blood pressure, when the heart is pumping. This number should be around 120 or lower. The lower number represents the diastolic number, or the passive or resting portion of blood pressure. This number should be around 80 or lower. Know your numbers, take your medication, educate your children, and adult family members, and talk about your health. Visit a physician on a regular basis. Take control of your health, your life depends on it. Remember at any age a person can have a stroke, but as you get older you are more susceptible to having a stroke. FAST is an acronym that everyone should know when they suspect that someone is having a stroke. The “F” stands for face, and one side of the face droops. The “A” stands for arm and the arm drop’s down. The “S” stands for speech, and check for slurred or strange speech. The “T” stands for time, and time is of the essence and call 911. To learn more about strokes contact the American Stroke Association, and go to my YouTube channel and view my documentary: “High Blood Pressure: A State of Emergency in the African American Community” (https:// youtu.be/tiINtiXBLXw).
