Editor’s letter

We start this edition with the first Marbella International Interior Design Competition (Certamen Internacional de Interiorismo de Marbella), an international event sponsored by the prestigious “La Zagaleta” complex. This competition brings together the best architects from all over the world to build the reputations of Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís as the major residential tourism destinations in the south of Spain. It was an event of luxury and design which Ogee could not miss. In this new edition, you can also read about many other topics, such as, for example, our kitchens special or reports about two great architects: Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and the great architect of Canadian origin Frank Owen Gehry, who won the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. So, find a nice spot of shade, prepare your favourite drink and get ready to enjoy the refreshing pages of the summer edition of Ogee Magazine. Have a great summer!

Dear reader, Welcome to the new edition of Ogee Magazine, a very special issue since we are celebrating our second birthday! It seems like yesterday when Ogee was launched. In these two years of work, we have travelled the entire world to meet the most renowned architects, designers, interior designers and landscape designers. With you by our side, we have visited the most beautiful hotels, restaurants and boats. We have learned theory and practice about heating, ergonomic designs, home automation and many other things. Architects Simón Francés and Judith Sastre, from the Madrid studio Francés + Sastre Architects, won the DOM3 Prize 2014, an international architecture prize. It was announced by the Association of Businesses for High-Quality Housing (DOM3) and they received the award at an evening event held at La Zagaleta. The winners presented their Belvedere project, which, according to the jury, was notable for its simplicity and the way that the architecture respects the environment and the site. The prize is 40,000 euros and the construction of the villa on a plot in the luxurious La Zagaleta complex, which sponsored the competition. First of all, we must congratulate you for winning the prize. Can you describe to us what was asked of you in this competition? Thank you very much. We’re very proud to be the winners of the first edition of the DOM3

Prize. As architects, we’re very excited at having the opportunity to build a luxury house in La Zagaleta. By winning an international competition judged by a renowned jury which looked at more than 100 proposals, we now have a golden career opportunity. We have to thank the Association of Businesses for High-Quality Housing (DOM3) for holding the competition and La Zagaleta for giving up one of its plots so that we can build the villa. As well as meeting certain physical requirements, projects had to show that there had been thought about the components which could produce the maximum expression of design,

quality and location in a luxury house. The proposals had to outline a piece of architecture which could establish a close relationship between the surrounding landscape and the high-quality interior spaces. In your opinion, what are the key aspects of your “Belvedere” project that has made it the winning proposal? We think that the main reason why the jury decided that our proposal should be the winner was the radical relationship the house establishes with its surroundings.

An architect must be a professional who, among many other things, must have a creative attitude From the beginning, we were clear that the idea for the project had to come from the dialogue that was established between the house, the magnificent views and the distinct topography of the plot. Our proposal outlines a villa which is not dominantly positioned, but instead is built downwards, bringing its roof level with the highest point of the land. Therefore, when you approach the house, its façade is not visible and instead you’regreeted by a large garden surrounded by water features, groves of trees and small plantations, which enables you to enjoy the unbeatable views of the distant horizon. At the end of the path through the garden, there’s a hole in the terrace which creates a hollowed-out courtyard. Once you are down in the courtyard, you experience a completely different relationship with the surroundings, as you are surrounded by a plantation of fruit trees and your only relationship with the outside world is through the sky. In short, the villa is not outlined as something that imposes on the site, but as an exploration mechanism which takes control of the landscape via a pathway. How does the site influence the design? As we’ve said, the surroundings have a fundamental role in the design of the project, but as architects, we like to think that architecture doesn’t solely depend on its physical site. There is a tendency to think that projects only respond to the plot of land where they are located, but in reality they meet other aims (social, economic, construction) which should be met at any given time. In this case, we would highlight the economic consideration above the others, not only because the villa will be aimed at a customer profile that has high purchasing power, meaning that it must have a high level of quality and sophistication, but also because we think that the house must also help to consolidate and strengthen luxury residential tourism in Marbella, and therefore improve the economy of the area. What do you think of the projects presented by the two finalists? On the whole, the level of the proposals from the finalists has been quite high. It must have been

Мы должны поблагодарить Ассоциацию предпринимателей, работающих в области элитной недвижимости (DOM3) за организацию этого конкурса, а также урбанизацию “Ла Загалета” - за то, что они предоставили один из своих участков для осуществления проекта. С вашей точки зрения, что именно сделало ваш проект “Belvedere” победителем конкурса? Мы считаем, что основная причина, почему жюри решило, что победила наша заявка, состоит в полном слиянии виллы с окружающей средой. Мы сразу поняли, что идея проекта должна состоять в диалоге между домом, великолепным видом и особенностями рельефа участка. Наш проект предлагает виллу, которая не является доминирующим элементом, а наоборот - подчиненным. Ее крыша совмещена с самой высокой точкой местности таким образом, что приближаясь к дому, мы не видим его фасад. Нас встречает большой сад в окружении водоемов, аллеи и небольшие посадки. Мы наслаждаемся великолепным видом далеко за горизонт. В конце дорожки, которая проходит через сад, появляется открытый участок, обрамленный фруктовыми деревьями. Оказавшись внизу, начинаешь по-другому воспринимать то, что тебя окружает. Мы стоим внутри фруктового сада и единственная связь с внешним миром, которая у нас остается, это небо. В конечном итоге, сама вилла не является доминантой этого места. Путь к дому и сам дом создавались, как способ раскрытия элементов ландшафта. La Zagaleta is the company that owns the complex of the same name in Benahavís, Málaga. Created in 1991, it is considered to be the most luxurious in Europe, with 900 hectares, and more than 200 houses valued at between 10 and 25 million euros.

difficult for the jury to select the best projects. With “Casa de los Naranjos”, which received first honourable mention, it is worth highlighting its additive system of different parts on the plan, which can break up the volume, making the resulting building smaller. We are interested in the approach of “The Mountain Top House”, which was awarded second honourable mention, which is completely different to the other finalist and tries to fit the entire house plan under a single folded-plate roof. The plan is also adapted to the topography of the site. When are you going to build the villa? It’s still too soon to know when construction work will begin - the competition has only just finished. We’llput in all the passion, energy and work we can to ensure that this project will become reality as soon

as possible. I’m sure that the Association of Businesses for High-Quality Housing (DOM3) will help us in every way it can and La Zagaleta will have as much involvement as possible to speed up the development of the project and the subsequent construction of the villa. What other projects are you developing at the moment? At the end of last year, we won first prize in the San Francisco Space Park international competition in Puerto de la Cruz. Currently, we’re developing a project which will have a multifunctional auditorium with a capacity of 700 seats and the new home of the Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art. We’re also working on a project for 25 single family homes in Madrid, which is exploring interesting passive solutions for energy saving.

What kind of attitudes do you believe that an architect should have? In our opinion, an architect must be a professional who, among many other things, must have a creative attitude and, of course, we think that the creative process must be closely linked to a positive attitude towards life. In the studio we like to read An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth by the designer Bruce Mau from time to time, which sets out in 43 points many of the attitudes which we think must be present in the creative process. We would encourage you to read it. With this positive attitude which we’ve mentioned in mind, we hope that the development of this project and its subsequent construction will enable us to take on future projects and continue growing. www.francessastre.com

В этом случае, мы, среди прочих, выделяем экономические условия, не только исходя из того, что вилла предназначена для клиента с высоким уровнем дохода, и, следовательно, должна отличаться высоким уровнем качества, отвечать всем требованиям и запросам, но и потому, что должна также способствовать укреплению и расширению резидент-туризма в Марбелье, и, таким образом, улучшить экономику этого района. Что вы думаете о проектах, представленных двумя архитектурными студиями, вышедшими в финал? В целом уровень предложения командфиналистов был довольно высоким. Вероятно, жюри трудно было выбрать лучшие проекты. Что касается проекта “Casa de los Naranjos”, который получил первое специальное

упоминание от жюри, то мы бы выделили ее аддитивную систему, разбивающую объем на отдельные небольшие части и повышающую эффективность строительства. Какими еще проектами вы занимаетесь сейчас? В конце прошлого года мы получили первую премию на международном конкурсе Espacio Parque San Francisco en Puerto de la Cruz (Парк Сан-Франциско в Пуэрто-де-ла-Крус).

В настоящее время мы разрабатываем проекты многофункционального зала вместимостью до 700 мест и нового здания Музея современного искусства Эдуарда Вестердааля. In recent months, we have witnessed a real boom on television around the world of food. But is that love of cooking something new in 2014? Of course not. Interior designers of all styles and from all ages have always fussed over that cosy haven in our home. It is a homely space, filled with delicious aromas which not only whet the appetite, but also make people want to converse, chat, laugh and so on. Naturally, stylistic trends have varied over time, from the minimalist havens that were popular with designers in decades past to the large spaces that we enjoy today. Charles Mewes, the brilliant architect behind the Paris Ritz, was put in charge of its design and it was built under the supervision of two of the foremost Spanish architects, Luis de Landecho and Lorenzo Galltgo, who very accurately interpreted the perfect classical design of their French colleague. The elegant structure of the Ritz Hotel also has the distinction of being the first in Spain to have been constructed in steel.

An interesting fact: as soon as the hotel opened its doors in 1910, afternoon tea was introduced into society in Madrid. Until then, it was thought that tea was only drunk by eccentric people. People most commonly used to have hot chocolate with pastries. Thanks to the Ritz, afternoon tea became fashionable, becoming an unmistakable sign of belonging to the highest level of society.

Norman Foster. Based in the United States, where he has done most of his work, his studio is in Los Angeles, the city where he designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In Spain, as well as the Bilbao Museum, he designed the Marqués de Riscal Vineyard Hotel in Elciego, Álava. Its buildings, which incorporate new and original architectural forms, are characterised by their use of cheap

and unusual materials. The prize for the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, along with the other seven prizes that the Prince of Asturias Foundation (Fundación Príncipe de Asturias) awards annually, is a sculpture by Joan Miró, 50,000 euros in cash, a certificate and a badge. The prizes will be awarded next October in the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

Ogee and the golden ratio и золотое сечение

In various issues of our magazine we have been telling you how the Ogee design is taking over streets and squares, buildings and monuments, parks and gardens. Curves and arcs have been masterfully combined to recreate the divine proportions of nature: the golden ratio of 1.6. The golden number, the divine proportion, the golden section and the Phi Number are some of the many names that the golden ratio been given throughout history, but all of them refer to the perfect proportions of human beings and nature.

They are proportions supposedly of divine origin which architects, designers, landscapists, painters, sculptors and photographers have reproduced masterfully in their works of art. Architects were perhaps the first to replicate the divine curves of nature. The Great Pyramid of Giza and the Tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt, the Parthenon and the statues of Polykleitos in Greece and Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower in France are examples of key buildings in human history which display these “magic” proportions

in their structure. These artistic expressions were soon replicated in other disciplines like painting, for example. Let’s take Velázquez and his Meninas or the great Leonard Da Vinci and his enigmatic Mona Lisa as just two examples. The magic of the golden ratio has been with humans for all their existence. It is present in trees, plants, animals, buildings, sculptures, paintings, photographs and, of course, in the enchanting interior design of the Ogee style, which is the style of our magazine.

Moneo is a Spanish architect and one of the most significant representatives of contemporary Spanish architecture. He was born in Tudela (Navarra) and studied at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid, where he obtained a degree in architecture in 1961. He is the creator of internationally recognised works, most notably the Bankinter building in Madrid and the Museum of Roman Art in Mérida. More recently he has constructed an extension at Madrid Atocha railway station and

the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium in San Sebastián. His other works include the Diagonal Building in Barcelona, the terminal building at San Pablo airport in Seville, the Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca and the Museum of Art and Architecture in Stockholm. It can be said that one of Rafael Moneo’s main characteristics is his use of history as a building material. In 1996, he was awarded the Pritzer Architecture Prize, considered the most important award in the world in this field.

He is an advocate for investigating the city and connecting with its past. To Moneo, architecture must go beyond a concrete stylistic desire. He tends to create architecture which has its own identity. In this way, his finished work has been influenced by its location, by its past and by its future function. He maintains references to masters from all ages and prefers to use stone and brick. He is currently designing a hotel in the centre of Málaga.

1. Open the windows at least once a day for 5 minutes. This lets out any stagnant chi allowing fresh clean energy in. 2. Use curtains and blinds in the right measure. Direct sunlight during summer can be uncomfortable so try and make sure that the room isn’t too bright. Create a good balance of yin and yang chi by using thicker curtains and blinds to block any direct sunshine during the hottest hours. If the living room is naturally dark keep curtains to a minimum to let more natural light in. 3. How the furniture is arranged is essential to how the energy circulates around the room. You should be able to move around the living room in an easy manner, beneficial to you or any guests. Clearing access to the seating area helps chi arrive well. Consider placing sofas and armchairs in a square setting to encourage conversation. 4. Clear any clutter that may be accumulating especially in corners. It is difficult to relax with clutter around as it encourages the build up of stagnant chi. One of the most common problems that stops fresh chi flowing is piles of magazines and newspapers. Recycle the ones you won’t read again and put the others in simple storage solutions such as boxes or cupboards. 5. You can use plants and fresh flowers in corners to enhance live yang energy where the chi builds up the most. Plants help to keep fresh air circulating. 6. Too many patterns and strong colours can be tiring. If they are used in a living room with young children you will find that they don’t sit still. Try and keep décor and patterns to softer schemes to encourage relaxation. 7. Try and avoid placing your favourite sofa or armchair with its back to the living room door. You won’t feel comfortable sitting there for long periods. 8. Consider the location of the room when deciding colour schemes. Northerly rooms need warm colours whereas southern rooms would be more relaxing with a cooler palate. 9. Avoid sitting under beams as they can cause headaches and body aches. Place any seating away from overhead beams.

Located in the municipality of Álora (Málaga), it is a spectacular mountainous settlement in the heart of the Los Gaitanes Gorge Natural Park (“Parque Natural Desfiladero de los Gaitanes”), an area which has been protected by the Autonomous Government of Andalusia since 1989 because of its great ecological value and its extraordinary scenic, historic and paeleontological wealth. The gorge is more than 100 metres high and on its walls is the famous “King’s Little Pathway” (“Caminito del Rey”), which is 4 metres long and one

metre wide and is currently being restored. Surrounding the gorge is the Los Gaitanes Gorge Natural Park, which has a total area of 2,016 hectares and has a landscape of great natural beauty with spectacular rock formations of different origins and various geological ages. The gorge splits the park into two halves and its walls have a drop of more than 300 metres in some places. The highest point is the peak of La Huma, which is 1,119 metres. This area is a meeting place for climbing lovers.

COUNT OF GUADALHORCE RESERVOIR Rafael Benjumea Burín was the engineer in charge of the Count of Guadalhorce Reservoir (“Embalse del Conde de Guadalhorce”) project. They called him the “engineer poet”. His works were seen as brilliant because he combined the particular functionality of a work of engineering with respect for the natural surroundings when creating them. Word of the praise that the reservoir was receiving for its beauty reached King Alfonso XIII, who made an official visit in May 1921. The king was so impressed by what he saw that he gave Rafael Benjumea the title of Count of Guadalhorce. However, this story began much earlier, in 1901, when workers from the El Churro Hydroelectrical Company began to build a pathway above the ground which was pinned along the gorge walls, in order to transport materials for the dam. Since then, more than a century ago, what began as a service road and then a royal walkway has now become part of the cultural, environmental and sporting history of both the Guadalhorce Valley and of the province of Málaga 64 ogeemagazine.com

Prize-giving ceremony for the First DOM3 Prize for Architecture 2014 in La Zagaleta

The first prize was awarded to Simón Francés and Judith Sastre, from the Francés + Sastre Arquitectos studio in Madrid, for their Belvedere project. The competition jury highlighted that it stood out for its simplicity and the subordination of the architecture to the habitat and location. The jury also decided to award two special mentions; one to the Casa de Los Naranjos project by the deBlacam and Meagher Architects architectural firm in Dublin (Ireland) and the other to the London studio PR Architecture, for its project The Mountain Top House.
