It has been an interesting time for the Estomar91 team; most notably we were very impressed by the amazing furniture on display at the Milan Furniture Fair – see our pictorial report on pages 28-31 – which surely points the way for the next few years.
Recientemente también hemos aprendido mucho más sobre la arquitectura ecológica, la última tendencia en la construcción. Uno de los que más saben de este tema es Edwin Toledo, cuyo punto de vista sobre la filosofía la podrás conocer en esta edición de la revista Ogee. cuarto de baño por nuestra maestra Teri García Hay 2 razones principales por las que hay que tener un cuidado especial con el diseño de los baños; en primer lugar, se consideran habitaciones ‘húmedas’ debido a la cantidad de agua en su estado más natural en los grifos, lavabos, etc y en segundo lugar porque éste es el punto de las salidas de aguas residuales de la propiedad. Esto significa que los baños deben ser cuidadosamente diseñados para evitar tanto las inundaciones y procurar una buena evacuación de aguas de la propiedad, ya que estos cuartos tan importantes tienen la facilidad de caer fuera del equilibrio debido a un Feng Shui erróneo. Una consecuencia puede ser el drenaje total la energía, causar problemas intestinales y hasta afectar al drenaje de las finanzas de los residentes. Para evitar problemas, lo ideal es que los baños tengan una ubicación en áreas específicamente calculadas por el Feng Shui. A pesar de nuestra obsesión por la higiene, el número de cuartos de baño en una propiedad debe ser limitado, ya que muchos implicaría un desgasto de energía en la propiedad. Feng Shui and Your Bathroom by Master Teri Garcia Special care and attention should be paid to bathroom design for two major reasons: firstly, they are considered ‘wet’ rooms because of the amount of water in its most natural state in taps, sinks etc. and secondly because this is the point at which sewage exits the property. This means that bathrooms must be carefully designed to avoid either flooding or draining the property, since this very important room can easily fall out of balance because of poor Feng Shui. This, in turn, can drain the residents’ energy, cause bowel problems and lead to finances draining away. Ideally bathrooms should be placed in specific areas according to the Feng Shui calculations for each property. Despite our obsession with hygiene, the number of bathrooms in any property should be limited, since too many will result in too much energy leaving the property. Of course, every case is different and ideally you should be guided by a Feng Shui Master, who will be able to advise you.

Keep it clean and smelling good. All plumbing should be working. Admit as much natural light as possible - good lighting is essential for an internal bathroom. A window is a must. Avoid hanging photos of loved ones in the bathroom.
Feng Shui Myths Many people ask if they should always leave the toilet seat down. The short answer is that it really doesn’t matter – in fact in some cases it is actually better left up! Al igual que en la arquitectura, el medio de oro o proporción áurea es muy importante; los seres humanos tienden a responder más favorablemente a las personas cuyos rostros y cuerpos se ajustan a la relación de 1.618:1, también representado por Phi o el símbolo Φ.

1.618:1 The Ogee and the Human Form While the ogee has an important role to play in architecture and design, its importance in our perception of what constitutes true beauty is perhaps less well known. As in architecture, the Golden Mean or Golden Ratio is all important; human beings tend to respond more favourably to people whose faces and bodies conform to the ratio of 1.618:1 which is also represented by Phi or the symbol Φ. While there are obviously cultural differences (which physical attributes are considered beautiful in the Ukraine, for instance, will not necessarily be similarly appreciated in Angola or South Korea), the actual ideal proportion of the face and body remains constant throughout the world. Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man brilliantly demonstrates this dream human shape. The Ogee is, in many ways, the equivalent of Plato’s concept of universal forms, the ideal from which all earthly creations must be judged – and frequently found lacking. At Estomar91 we find that Italian architecture and design best represents the perfection suggested by the ogee, which is one of the reasons that we named this magazine after it.

A lessandro Dot t i: De la mente a la vista “Desde que era un niño, me ha encantado que las ideas fugaces e intangibles resulten en objetos materiales.” Su observación se ha convertido en una especie de obsesión de por vida para Alessando Dotti, de la región de Brescia, en Italia. Después de graduarse de la Escuela Politécnica de Arquitectura en Milán, éste joven y talentoso diseñador, ha descubierto que los viajes realmente amplían la mente. Sus experiencias de trabajo en Rusia y Azerbadjan le han enseñado mucho acerca de las culturas y las ideas de diferentes países. Sin embargo todavía siente que el diseño italiano puede sostenerse en un mundo en cambio: “Es la combinación de la atención al detalle, la historia de la elegancia, el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y la disposición para personalizar el espacio arquitectónico que hace que el estilo italiano sea tan atractivo y tan vital”. Al igual que otras personas creativas, Alessandro tiene muchas dudas cuando

se le pregunta acerca de su proyecto favorito. “Suena como un cliché, pero ¿puedo decir el próximo? Es fácil embrujarse por el concepto de la forma ideal.” Alejandro ha trabajado con Estomar91 en varios proyectos, de los cuales destaca una gran finca privada, lo que plantea una serie de desafíos. Uno de los desafíos era dar un toque de calidez y clasicismo a un interior sorprendentemente modernista. “Mi papel era sobre todo el de estilista, siguiendo la dirección artística del proyecto a través de materiales y colores. Creo que uno de los aspectos que es realmente vital es la creación de
una atmósfera sensorial a través de la atención al detalle. Creo que mi obsesión ha hecho que mi colaboración con el equipo Estomar91 sea tan agradable y gratificante.” A pesar de la situación económica actual, Alessandro Dotti tiene confianza en el futuro. “Nos enfrentamos a un momento difícil, eso es seguro, pero creo que este momento de crisis en realidad llegará a ser el heraldo de mejores oportunidades. Hasta podría decir que tendremos que modificar la forma en que nos fijamos en la arquitectura – tendremos que aprender a ser más flexibles.” Este año ya ha demostrado ser un año muy movido para este joven arquitecto: “Para el resto del año y el 2013 voy a estar ocupado trabajando en varios proyectos en diversas partes del mundo, aunque espero ser capaz de encontrar el tiempo para trabajar en Italia.”
A lessandro Dot t i: From the Mind to the Eye “Since I was a child I have loved the idea that something as fleeting and intangible as an idea can be translated into a material object.” This observation has proved to be something of a lifelong obsession for Brescia born Alessandro Dotti. After graduating from the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan, this talented young designer has discovered that travel really does broaden the mind. His experiences of working in Russia and Azerbijan have taught him a great deal about the cultures and ideas of different countries. However, he still feels that Italian design can hold its own in a changing world: “It’s the combination of attention to detail, the history of elegance, the development of new materials and the willingness to customise the architectural space that makes Italian style so attractive and so vital.”
Like most creative people, Alessandro sounds far less confident when asked about his favourite project. “It sounds like a cliché,” he says, “but can I say the next one? The trouble is that I’m very critical of my work and when something is finished it’s easy to see all the things that I might have done differently, but the next project, it is a clean sheet, a tabula rasa. It is so easy to be bewitched by the concept of the ideal form. ” Alessandro has worked with Estomar91 on several projects, including a large private estate, which posed a number of challenges, not the least of which was to lend a touch of warmth and classicism to a strikingly modernist interior. “My role was primarily stylistic, following the artistic direction of the project through materials and colour. One of the aspects that I really feel is truly vital is
the creation of a sensory atmosphere through attention to detail. I think that it is this obsession of mine that has made my collaboration with the Estomar91 team so enjoyable and so rewarding.” Despite the current economic situation, Alessandro Dotti has confidence in the future. “We are facing a challenging time, that is for sure, but I think that this moment of crisis will actually prove to be the herald of greater opportunities. It might even mean that we will need to modify the way that we look at the concept of architecture, but this is no bad thing if we learn to be more flexible.” This year has already proved to be a busy year for this young architect: “For the rest of the year and 2013 I will be busy working on several projects in various parts of the world, but I am hoping also to be able to find time to work in Italy.”

Estomar91 asistió a la 51ª Feria del Mueble de Milán en abril, y el equipo se vio sorprendido por la creatividad. El evento de este año fue un éxito rotundo, con un total final de 331.649 visitantes y 2.700 empresas italianas y extranjeras que exhiben sus productos.
Estomar91 attended the 51st Milan Furniture Fair in April and the team was amazed by the creativity on display. It was agreed that this year’s event was a resounding success, with a final total of 331,649 visitors and 2,700 Italian and foreign companies exhibiting their products.
Los componentes principales eran la forma y el color. Algunos de los diseñadores más creativos del mundo dieron rienda suelta a su imaginación, produciendo algunos accesorios y muebles realmente innovadores. Diseñado por el renombrado arquitecto francés Jean Nouvel, junto con la empresa española, Arquiectos B720 y construido por el Grupo ACS, la Torre Agbar se inauguró oficialmente en junio de 2005 por el rey Juan Carlos, y su construcción costó más 130 millones de euros. En la actualidad está habitada por sus dueños, la multinacional Grupo Agbar, que compró el edificio a la empresa de inversión Azurelau en 2010. Se dice que la Torre Agbar se ha inspirado en Montserrat, la sierra más cercana a Barcelona. Es cierto que el sedimento de color rosa es una característica de su ubicación y que se ve reflejado en el exterior del edificio de vidrio multicolor.
Con su aspecto un tanto fálico, la forma de la Torre Agbar ha dado lugar a inevitables comparaciones con el Pepinillo londinense diseñado por Norman Foster que, a pesar de sus similitudes superficiales, tiene un carácter distinto. Los sensores de temperatura plantados en el exterior de las persianas de las ventana de la torre regulan la temperatura, y por la noche miles de luces LED permiten la creación de formas e imágenes, cambiando constantemente su apariencia. Quizás le falta la seriedad histórica de las estructuras más reconocibles de Gaudí, pero la Torre Agbar de Barcelona se está convirtiendo en uno de los principales edificios contemporáneos de la ciudad.

Jean Nouvel’s Agbar Tower
Barcelona – Spain’s second city and home to some of Europe’s finest architecture – is perhaps most famous for Antoni Gaudí’s magnificent creations, such as the still incomplete Cathedral Sagrada Familia and the phantasmagorical Parc Güell. While these creations undoubtedly represent some of Europe’s most celebrated landmarks, it would be a mistake to imagine that this picturesque city’s horizons do not extend beyond Catalan Modernism. Situated on Carrer de Badajoz, just before it encounters Avinguda Diagonal and marking the gareway to the city’s technological district, Torre Agbar is one of Bar-

celona’s more recent iconic structures. Designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, in conjunction with Spanish company, B720 Arquiectos and constructed by Grupo ACS, Torre Agbar was officially unveiled in June 2005 by King Juan Carlos and cost 130 million euros. Currently inhabited by its owners, multinational group Agbar, who bought the building from investment firm, Azurelau, in 2010, Torre Agbar is said to have been inspired by Montserrat, a mountain range near Barcelona. It is certainly true that the pink sediment that is such a feature of this area can be seen in the building’s variegated glass exterior.
Torre Agbar’s somewhat phallic appearance has led to inevitable comparisons with London’s Norman Foster designed Gherkin, yet despite this superficial similarity it has a distinct character. Temperature sensors planted in the exterior of the tower cause window blinds to open and close, thereby regulating temperature, while by night thousands of LED lights permit the creation of shapes and images, constantly changing its appearance. Perhaps it lacks the historical gravitas of Gaudí’s most recognisable structures, but Barcelona’s Torre Agbar is fast becoming one of the city’s key contemporary buildings.

Edwin Toledo and Bio-Climatic Architecture What is bio-climatic architecture? Technological advances that allow such equipment as solar panels to become an essential part of modern homes have had the additional effect of a more general rise in consciousness about the necessity to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. While there are many ways in which it possible to adapt the home to ensure that less energy is used in its maintenance, bio-climatic architecture goes one step further. Bio-climatic architecture reaches further than features such as solar panelling and wood fired central heating, although designers eagerly embrace all available technology.
