This edition of Ogee Magazine is a hymn to the goddess HEBA and our pages are packed full of suggestions as how best to enjoy this most beautiful season of the year: we will stroll through that UNESCO World Heritage jewel, the Gardens of Aranjuez and discuss the orchid, the fragile and beautiful queen of flowers that is widely acknowledged as the epitome of any truly sophisticared environment. This year’s most popular colour, according to Pantone, is marsala, a tone that will characterise 2015’s decor. The architecture section presents the finalists of the Mies Awards 2015, which will be be held in May, while the architect Emanuelle Fulvi examines the relationship between eco sustainability and luxurious private homes.

Знакомство журнала “Ogee” c итальянским архитектором Эммануэлем Фульви началось давно: уже в нашем первом выпуске читатели узнали о его творчестве. Поскольку Эммануэль регулярно участвует в Мебельном салоне в Милане и, учитывая близость проведения EXPO 2015, мы бы хотели узнать, что он думает и ждет от очередной выставки, услышать его мысли о сегодняшнем дне и тенденциях в современной архитектуре частных домов и в оформлении их интерьеров.

Ogee: Господин Фульви, расскажите нам об основных тенденциях в современной архитектуре и в оформлении интерьеров частных домов. ЭФ: Сегодня большое значение придается высоким технологиям и системам «умный дом». В этой сфере, конечно, мы ожидаем еще много новаций. Хотя опыт подсказывает, что обычно клиенты уделяют больше внимания комфорту и уюту, чем высоким технологиям. Думаю, что главными трендами этого года будут: экоустойчивость, роскошь, высокие технологии, минимализм. Эти векторы не противоречат друг другу, как это может показаться. Обычно мы ищем теплые природные материалы (дерево, кожа, хлопок), но в то же время нам хочется экологической безопасности, энергоэффективности и использования переработанных материалов. Как правило, лучшими считаются дома с хорошей изоляцией, из современных материалов и с системами климат-контроля, что позволяет сберегать энергию при оптимальной температуре и наилучшем качестве воздуха.

Ogee: Есть ли в Вашей концепции экоустойчивости место для настоящей роскоши? ЭФ: В нашем доме всегда будет, по крайней мере, один элемент, использование которого позволяет отнести проект к классу “люкс”. Каждый человек, исходя из своих возможностей, может выбрать какую-либо дорогую деталь, которая бы наилучшим образом отражала и характеризовала его личность. К роскоши можно отнести и высокие технологии, которые уже являются неотъемлемой частью дома и его дизайна: телекоммуникации, «умный дом» и бытовую технику на кухне.

Ogee: Какое место, с вашей точки зрения, занимает в архитектуре и дизайне интерьера минимализм? ЭФ: Минимализм важен; в общих чертах, – это средство, которое позволяет нам создать среду, на фоне которой можно выделить интересующие нас детали. Я имею в виду светлые и очень простые пространства, где элементы, на которых мы хотим акцентировать внимание, могут быть выражены ярко и выпукло. Антикварная мебель интенсивных цветов (как правило, из дерева) или дизайнерская мебель с изогнутыми линиями и более смелыми цветами, чрезвычайно чувственная классическая или современная мягкая мебель, эффектные

картины или лампы, которые заслуженно занимают важное место в интерьере. Я считаю, что и в дальнейшем мы увидим активное применение высоких технологий в минималистическом дизайне и в высококачественных предметах с привлекательными линиями.

Ogee: В этом году опять будет проходить Мебельный салон в Милане. Что Вы ждете от будущей выставки? ЭФ: На ярмарке в Милане мы сможем увидеть, что преобладающими цветами текстиля будут теплые оттенки, а элементы ретро будут активно присутствовать в минималистических пространствах. Обратите внимание на то, что 2015 год станет годом Милана, ведь в мае здесь откроется Международная выставка EXPO-2015, главной темой которой будут продукты питания. Однако, как на любой универсальной выставке, страны-участницы (в данном случае их 145) представят в своих павильонах лучшее из области архитектуры и дизайна. В течение шести месяцев во временных павильонах участники попытаются представить свои страны наилучшим образом. Уверяю вас, что и на выставке дизайна, и на EXPO-2015 будет на что посмотреть. В этом году, более чем когда-либо, нужно совершить путешествие в Милан.

Emmanuele Fulvi Murray and Ogee Magazine are old comrades, as he lent his unique creative vision to our very first edition. A regular participant in Milan’s Furniture Salon, which is fast approaching and, this time, coinciding with EXPO 2015, we wanted to know more about Fulvi’s expectations and opinions on the evolution and current state of exterior and interior design in private homes.

Ogee: Mr Fulvi, how would you define contemporary trends in exterior and interior design in private homes? What do you consider the distinguishing feature?

EF: Today more importance is given to technologically advanced systems and ‘domotic’ housing.

Certainly, from this point of view we can expect great advances. In my experience the customer gives higher priority to comfort and warmth rather than high-tech gadgets that they would prefer to conceal from view.

I believe that guiding themes of 2015 will be ecosustainability, luxury, high-tech, minimalism.

These elements do not necessarily have to be part of an ‘either-or’ choice. In fact we always seek warm, natural materials (such as wood, leather or cotton) but eco-sustainability also aims to save energy as well as use recycled or natural materials; these days we tend to have better insulated houses with advanced materials and smart climate control systems that allow us to save energy while having a better quality of life via temperature optimization and air quality.

Ogee: Is there a place for luxury in your concept of eco-sustainability?

EF: Our homes will always have at least one element, one point, that satisfies our ego and therefore could be defined as the expression of luxury. Each one, according to its possibilities, could reflect the expansive aspect of our personality.

High technology is present in all components that are already part of the design of the house, usually televisions and machines that run the house, most of them in the kitchen.

Ogee: Where does minimalism feature in your vision of architecture and interior design?

EF: Minimalism is important and is a philosophy that allows us to create a canvas that can be highlighted by the elements we consider important. I am thinking of clear and simple environments where the elements we want to show can be evidenced. Antique furniture with strong colours (usually wood) or design furniture with curved lines and bolder colours, extremely sensual classic or modern upholstery, dramatic pictures or lamps can then achieve the prominence they deserve.

I think we will see a lot of high technology applied to top quality minimal-

ist design pieces with attractive lines. Over the years design has progressed significantly and one of the elements that has improved most is the quality of the materials.

Ogee: Will you repeat any themes in the Milan Furniture Salon 2015? What do you expect from the next one?

EF: During the Milan Salon we will see that the principal textile colours will be warm and plenty of retro elements will be mixed with minimalist environments.

But pay attention! We must bear in mind that 2015 will be the year of Milan par excellence because the EXPO Milano is to be held from May. The Universal Exhibition is based on food and nutrition but, like all expositions, the participating countries (in this case 145) will present the best architecture and design in their pavilions. These pop-up buildings will try, over a period of six months, to represent their countries in the best way.

So I’m sure that in this year the Design Salon will draw in crowds from EXPO and vice versa. I think this year, more than ever, it is essential to make the trip to Milan.

The Eu Prize for

Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award is a continuous process focused on how architects are thinking and working in Europe today.

The Prize objectives aim at promoting and understanding the significance of quality and reflecting the complexity of Architecture’s own significance in terms of technological, constructional, social, economic, cultural and aesthetic achievements.

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced five finalists who will compete for the 2015 European Union Prize

for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.

On May 8 the name of the 2015 laureates will be announced at a special event at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. The 2015 Prize exhibition and a celebration to acknowledge the work of all the architects and people who have been involved in the Prize process will take place that same day at a special event.

В Университете CEU Сан-Пабло в Мадриде 5 февраля состоялась презентация книги “B” de Bauhaus директора Лондонского музея дизайна Деяна Суджича, (перевод на испанский Гильем Усандизага).

Речь идет о своебразном словаре архитектуры и дизайна, издательства “Turner”, из серии “Словарь новейшего времени“. Провокационная коллекция представлений о современности, трактующих различные явления, связанные с архитектурой и дизайном. “Написано с непринужденной легкостью и со знанием дела”, - так Том Бэнкс описал стиль Суджича на неделе моды “Design Week”. В алфавитном порядке автор выстраивает разнообразные понятия и категории, начиная с буквы “А” - Auténtico (подлинный), и заканчивая “Y” Youtube. Между этими двумя “полюсами” в подробном списке расположены ключевые слова для исследования и понимания основных тем архитектуры и дизайна. Можно ли найти что-то общее между оружием и Икеей, между Ремом Колхасом и создателем клавиатуры Qwerty, между бедными пригородами Мумбаи и историей создания стула? Таким вопросом

задается автор книги, обобщая явления, казалось бы друг с другом не связанные, в тридцать девять эссе, где буква за буквой открывается мир моды, дизайна, технологии и искусства. В конечном итоге речь идет о великолепном и полезном инструменте для понимания современной культуры. Оригинальный взгляд на мир Деяна Суджича высвечивает другое прочтение окружающего нас повседневного дизайна. Эту же тему автор развивал и в своей предыдущей популярной книге “Язык вещей”. “B” is for Bauhaus, a book written by Deyan Sudjic, director of London’s Design Museum and translated into Spanish by Guillem Usandizaga, was launched on February the 5th at CEU Madrid.

This useful and informative dictionary of architecture and design, published by Turner Libros and subtitled “A dictionary of the modern world” comprises an intriguing collection of ideas about modernity, explaining various phenomena associated with these two co-dependent professions and, at the same time, interpreting the modern world. Design Week’s Tom Banks said that it was, “Written with natural fluency, authoritative...”

This alphabetical overview of different styles and philosophies commences with “A for Authentic” and ends with “Y for YouTube”. Between these two lies a whole world of topics, defined by one of the world’s leading experts in the field.

There are many surprises in store for the beginner or design expert: Sudjic asks such questions as to whether it is possible to find a common link between guns and Ikea, Rem Koolhaas and the creator of the ‘qwerty’ keyboard or the

urban slums of Bombay and the history of the chair. He discovers connections between seemingly random phenomena in the 39 essays that make up the book, covering letter by letter the world of fashion, design, technology and art. In short, B is for Bauhaus is an attractive and useful key to understanding contemporary culture. Deyan Sudjic’s unique world view focuses on different interpretations of what surrounds us in our everyday life, a theme which he also touched on in his previous bestseller, The Language of Things, also published by Turner Libros.

Deyan Sudjic was born in London. After studying architecture in Edinburgh he collaborated with various publications specializing in design and is the author of several books, which can be purchased via Amazon. In 2006 he took over the direction of London’s Design Museum, the internationally renowned institution.

It was in 1753 that William Hogarth, English painter and critic, named the elegant and enigmatic pointed arch the “line of beauty“ in his book The Analysis of Beauty. Consisting of two curving lines that meet and merge at the top, reaching for the celestial heights, this form underlies divine inspiration and perfectly reflects the universal harmony perceptible to the human eye.

The Golden Mean is the formula that organises and creates proportion in art and architecture and is linked to the fact that the human eye is best pleased when objects conform to a ratio of 1 to 1.618. Widely used in Greek and Roman architecture, the Golden Mean still dictates the design of most modern structural design and is an excellent way of ensuring that the results please the eye.

In Europe, the ogee arch appeared in late Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, the perfect form to evoke mystical beauty and elegance. Graceful and dominant, it soon appeared in royal and aristocratic palaces, public buildings and urban housing: it can be seen on portals, windows and in ornamental features. After

adorning exteriors, the ogee began to move inside homes as part of different elements of décor: room dividers, baseboards, windowsills, fireplaces etc. Furniture designers also could not resist its appeal; the precursor of English style, Thomas Chippendale, introduced its carefully curved lines into his creations and even now designers seeking beauty include it in their designs.

Most recently the passion for all things ogee was unleashed in interior décor, especially in the textile industry; we started to find it on curtains, decorative fabrics, cushions, bedding and wallpaper. These motifs might be repeated ad nauseam, but, thanks to its beauty and geometric perfection, the ogee provides aesthetic pleasure to the eye and a sense of calm to the spirit.

В последнее время, в дизайне интерьера все больше прослеживается стиль Ваби-саби, вдохновляемый древней японской философией. Стиль, основанный на аскетизме, наличии пространства и признания ценности простых и старых вещей, которые имеют свою историю и память. Даже Витторио Грифони, всемирно известный итальянский дизайнер, в своих коллекциях использовал идеи этой очень партикулярной эстетики. Но что есть на самом деле Ваби-саби и какой модус вивенди ( образ жизни) рекомендует? Ваби-саби - больше, чем стиль или эстетическое направление, это синтез эмоционального и рационального, когда чувства становятся экзистенциальной философией, устанавливающей взаимосвязь с внешним миром. Ваби-саби - это ода быстротечности, это полное осознание и принятие неизбежного. Этот способ видения жизни приводит к поиску красоты и гармонии в мимолетном, незавершенном, в неподдельном и простом, в самой сущности подлинных вещей. На этом и основываются последователи данного жизненного принципа (modus vivendi), формируя среду обитания: здания из природных материалов, строгие интерьеры, асимметричные сады, икебана, зачастую являющаяся единственным украшением, керамическая посуда (hage ware) неправильной формы. Все говорит о течении времени, об уважении к непрочности и изнашиванию вещей, проходящим тот же путь, что и люди, которым они служат. Ваби-саби, средство достижения внутреннего покоя, широко используется не только в азии, но и на западе для уменьшения вредного воздействия напряженной, полной стрессов жизни. Посвященные в это искусство жизни (ars vivendi) выделяют несколько основных незыблемых правил, условия sine qua non, для приближения интерьера, насколько это возможно, к самой сути Ваби-саби:

Interior design lately has become increasingly influenced by Wabi Sabi, a style inspired by ancient Japanese philosophy. Based on reductionism, rigour and a formal and chromatic simplicity, and recognition of the value of simple and old things that have their own history and memory Even Vittorio Grifoni, the world famous Italian designer, used the ideas of this very particular aesthetics in their collections - but what actually is Wabi Sabi and why should you adopt it in your home?

This famous haiku, full of noble and delicate nostalgia, is perhaps the best projection of Wabi Sabi, the untranslatable term that escapes firm definition. More than a style or aesthetic trend, Wabi Sabi is a synthesis of the emotional and the rational, the profound awareness of our oneness with life and the environment.

Wabi Sabi is an ode to transience, helping us to see the beauty in imperfection, to discover that our unique flaws also can lead us to great strength, accept what is imminent and inevitable, pursue beauty and harmony and the rustic and simple in its natural state. Therein lies the power of this modus vivendi: construction materials are extracted from nature, interiors are austere and asymmetrical, ikebana style gardens are often the only decoration. Irregular tableware ceramics (Hagi Ware, for instance) that have been exposed to the vagaries of time are favoured.

Wabi Sabi is a vehicle whose destination is inner peace, neutralizing the harmful effects of stressful Western life: it has already been adopted by many households outside Asia. Initiates in this concept are advised to maintain their environments as closely as possible to the essence of Wabi Sabi:

Витражи - произведения тысячелетнего изобразительного искусства. Они выполняются из цветного стекла, скрепляются свинцовыми перемычками и соединяются между собой в форме мозаики. Витражи появляются уже в римских храмах, но своего полного расцвета они достигают в церковной готической архитектуре, а в XVIII веке используются в общественных зданиях и дворцах. В культовой архитектуре витражи были теми элементами, которые создавали эффект мистицизма и величественности. Присущая им красота в соединении с солнечным светом делали так, что непроницаемые изображения оживали и менялись с движением лучей солнца, покоряя в эти торжественные моменты своим обворожительным обаянием. Stained glass windows, the ancient art of creating mosaics in lead frames with coloured glass, existed in Roman temples, although their peak could be said to have coincided with the rise of Gothic architecture.

By the 18th century stained glass windows could be seen in public buildings, palaces and mansions.

In sacred architecture stained glass windows provide places of worship with a sense of mysticism and majesty, as their inherent beauty is married with sunlight to give life to the figures depicted and encourage congregations to engage with the religious scenes portrayed.

Moving to the secular domain, stained glass art evolves thematically at both a formal and stylistic level, but still displays that famous propensity for turning any space into a marvellously warm, bright and playful corner that takes on new forms and changes colour with each passing moment. Modern architecture often favours colourless or monochrome windows that serve as separating panels between two potentially dark spaces, but their lack of colour does not rob them of the ability to create appealing environments capable of creating shadows or animated structures from light filtration.

As a result of artisanal skill married with artistic talent, stained glass was defined as a bona fide artistic sub-genre and some pieces have been considered unique works

of great value, most memorably when created by Andrea Castagno, Paolo Uccello or Albrecht DĂźrer. Later, Marc Chagall dabbled in the form, as did Matisse and architects Frank Lloyd Wright and, probably most notably, Antoni GaudĂ­, in whose unique and unusual buildings stained glass becomes the sine qua non.

Louis Comfort Tiffany, founder of Tiffany Studios, breathed new life into stained glass, introducing it into mirrors and other objects, but his moment of glory came with his lamps. The beauty of these skilfully crafted objects only increases when switched on, transforming living spaces. Whether in their pendant, table or floor incarnations, they are valued and distinctive weapons in the arsenal of any interior designer.

With the passage of time, the art of stained glass has, to a large extent, dominated the fields of architecture and interior design, from majestic depictions of sacred images to secular designs in public buildings and private homes. The smallest domestic items pay homage; glasses, ashtrays, vases, all of these can be harnessed to do the job of stained glass, transforming ordinary, commonplace light into something rich and strange.

“Flowers are free natural beauties”; thus Immanuel Kant defined flowers’ absolute perfection. Freed from the need to be utilitarian, they have been created only to be admired and to provide aesthetic pleasure.

In this privileged micro-universe the unquestioned queen is the orchid, her mysterious, indescribable beauty observable in 25,000 varieties, 25 of which are native to the Iberian Peninsula and more than 60,000 hybrids created by horticulturists. The amazing orchid varies in size from a few millimetres to a 13.4 metre Peruvian specimen described in 1999.

Although the orchid has attracted an almost mythical status surrounding its tropical origins and its need to be kept only in very warm, humid conditions, nothing could be further from the truth. This plant’s adaptability to different climatic conditions has allowed it to thrive in a variety of ecological situations, from the hottest and driest places on the planet to the dampest and coldest; orchids can be found from the polar regions to Ecuador.

This goddess of the floral firmament has been revered by many ancient civilizations, starting with the Mayans and Aztecs in pre-Columbian America while,

in China, it was mentioned in Confucius’s time, with reference to its medicinal powers. In ancient Greece it was considered a symbol of virility and even an effective aphrodisiac. In the 18th century in Europe it became a symbol of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, thus triggering a whole Orchidelirium among both horticulturists and those anxious to possess this object of desire.

The sheer diversity of orchid forms, an elegant and unique colour wheel that ranges from immaculate whiteness to intense colour, encompassing an immensity of subtle nuances and heady fragrance leads to an indescribable beauty.

For all these reasons the orchid has been moved from an outside plant to an essential piece of internal décor because its beauty, exotic and elegant, bestows a touch of sophistication. The orchid is highly appreciated for its properties and recommended by those skilled in Feng Shui since it represents perfection and attracts abundance, love and fertility.

Среди сухого и засушливого пейзажа плоскогорья Месета в городке Аранхуэс расположилась одна из резиденций испанской королевской семьи, Королевский дворец Аранхуэс, вошедший в 2001 году в список объектов Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Также в стиле рококо выполнена парадная лестница с балюстрадой из кованого железа и позолоты. Отдельного упоминания заслуживают банкетный зал, бальный зал, спальня королевы и часовня, украшенная великолепными фресками великих Амикони, Байеу, Джордано. На протяжении всего XVII века работы были приостановлены и возобновилось только во времена Фердинанда VI, который решил значительно расширить дворец. Работы продолжались и при Карлосе III, достроившем крылья дворца, огородив внутренний двор. Именно тогда дворец приобрел современный вид. Это расширение также затронуло и так называемый Домик Землепашца (Каса-дельЛабрадор), расположенный в саду Принца. Обширные королевские сады, орошаемые водами Тахо и Харама, возводились для отделения королевской резиденции от сухого плоскогорья и стали самыми выдающимися достопримечательностями в эпоху правления Габсбургов в Испании.

Located in the middle of the arid landscape of La Meseta, Ciudad Real and Villa de Aranjuez, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez is currently managed and maintained by National Heritage and, in 2001, was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also one of the residences of the Spanish Royal Family.

This jewel of Spanish history was built by Juan Bautista de Toledo and his assistant, Juan de Herrera at the express wish of Carlos V. It is situated between the banks of the Tagus River, the Avenida Palace and the Plaza de Parejas in the south, Parterre Garden to the East, the RĂ­a del Norte and the Plaza Raso Estrella del Oriente.

Its striking appearance is caused both by building taking place over different time periods with long breaks in between and the influences of different countries; the appearance of the Palace can best be described as eclectic. The building’s elegant exterior is created by the combination of brick and limestone and a fine architectural line. The central part of the main facade is higher than the rest and is decorated with the royal crest and statues of Carlos V, Felipe II and Fernando VI, the three kings who took part in the construction of the palace.

Inside, the aesthetic opulence of the Throne Room is especially notable, dressed in red velvet and containing a Porcelain Cabinet which combines chinoiserie and rococo styles; the latter is also present in the shape of the wrought iron and gilded balustrade of the imperial-style staircase.

Other spaces that deserve a special mention are the formal dining room, the ballroom, the queen’s bedroom and the oratory, covered with beautiful frescoes and signed by artists such as Amiconi, Bayeu and Giordano.

Throughout the seventeenth century, building work was halted until the reign of Fernando VI, when it was restarted with a major expansion commission which was continued by Carlos III, who added wings to enclose the parade ground. The expansion also included a smaller palace, the so-called Casa del Labrador, which forms part of the Prince’s Garden. In 1748 there was another construction hiatus, followed by a fire.

The immense Arcadian Gardens, designed to distinguish the royal residence from the rest of the meseteño landscape and irrigated with water from the Tagus and Jarama rivers, were the most famous and extravagant during Spain’s Hapsburg period.

Located in this Madrid municipality they joined the list of World Heritage Sites in 2001, along with the Royal Palace, under the name Aranjuez Cultural Landscape.

The complex comprises four gardens within an Arcadian environment, further decorated by some valuable sculptures that represent Greek gods and mythological beings, Roman emperors and Spanish kings. Several of these sculptures have been placed in fountains, emphasising their affinity to water and fostering feelings of pleasure and tranquillity.

The Parterre Garden, dating from the mid-eighteenth century, is connected to Felipe V. An extension of different green spaces in the Royal Palace, it is bordered by a river which further underscores the wondrous beauty of the place.

Clearly influenced by classical Italian garden design and French landscaping, Parterre Garden boasts several sculptures and architectural figures, three of which have been inspired by Greek mythology: the Hercules and Antaeus, the Ceres and the Nereids.

The Garden Island: situated adjacent to the Palace, this oldest garden dates back to the Order of Santiago, members of which built the Maestral Palace, predecessor of the current structure, between the 14th and 15th centuries.

Like the Parterre, it has diverse flora, featuring some spectacular roses, while its geometric shape, surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River and, on the fourth, by an artificial lake, houses statues and fountains, the most memorable being Boticaria, Hercules and the Hydra and Apollo. However, the most curious is the Fuente del Reloj (Sundial Fountain) because, when it is in operation, the shadow of the jet of water marks the hours on the edges of the fountain as if it were a clock.

Prince’s Garden: the largest of all features a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna, with an impressive variety of trees such as banana, cypress, pecan, Virginia persimmon, sweet gum, pine, buckeye, linden, ash, oak, coffee, magnolia, maple, hornbeam, tree of love and Jupiter trees, to name but a few. In this bucolic setting peacocks, pheasants, squirrels and other wildlife stroll freely.

Its thematic difference is the presence of Oriental cultures presented in the Chinesco Kiosko and its Egyptian granite mausoleum.

The last garden built in Aranjuez (in the 19th century) is the Garden of Isabel II, created when Isabel was a small child. The first trees were planted in 1830 within its square form and, four years later, a marble pedestal supporting a bronze statue of the infant queen was placed in the centre of the garden.

Springtime, when the heady scents of newly awakened nature fill the air, conjures Joaquin Rodrigo’s evocative Concierto de Aranjuez, a musical accompaniment this unique and unforgettable place.

Opening hours are 10:00 to 20:00 between April and September and 10:00 to 18:00 between March and October, the last visitors allowed access one hour before closing time. The palace and gardens are open every day except Monday.

Spain’s Property Market Boosted by Jim Mellon

As one of Britain’s most successful fund managers and entrepreneurs (his personal wealth is estimated at £850 million), Jim Mellon knows a thing or two about investment.

Mellon, who now runs his own investment company, Burnbrae, in the Isle of Man has a piece of timely advice for aspiring tycoons: invest in Spanish property. Having correctly forecast the slump in the euro 12 months ago (“even my Jack Russell could have forecast the euro would fall”) Mellon now predicts that the currency has bottomed out and that wily investors would be well advised to take the opportunity to buy real estate.

The British press was quick to pick up on the entrepreneur’s advice, since his fortune has largely been amassed by correctly identifying emerging markets and Spain, it seems, is the next big thing. With a wide variety of property for sale in all parts of the country, most especially the Costa del Sol, it seems likely that the local market will be in line to benefit from yet another wave of investors hoping to emulate “Europe’s Warren Buffet” as Mellon is known.

Ogee Magazine, with its interest in architecture and design, also has a keen interest in the interior design of luxury cars. When we find a genuine masterpiece we like to share it with you, hence this spotlight on the public presentation of the latest Rolls Royce, the Phantom Serenity.

The eagerly awaited Phantom Serenity, said to be the most opulent car ever created, was presented at Europe’s leading car expo, the Geneva Motor Show,

by Rolls-Royce and its Bespoke department. The tireless efforts of Rolls-Royce designers and craftsmen to make good the phrase, “Take the best that exists and make it better” inspired a new generation of Rolls-Royce designers who wondered how best to delight the Rolls-Royce customers, a most demanding and rigorous international clientele, who demand a new level of luxury.

The answer was Silk. Silk is the path to a new definition of luxury, guaranteeing each client a unique canvas on which to express their designs.

“The rear compartment of a Phantom is the most tranquil, beautiful place to be, a place where time and the outside world simply slip past,” says Cherica Haye who, along with Michelle Lusby, helped in the realization of the project.

“This tranquility made us think in the Eastern tradition, where emperors sit in their private gardens to enjoy solitude and serenity under flowering trees.”

The unconscious painting that creates Serenity As with the creation of every Rolls-Royce, the genesis of Serenity and its floral motif began with a blank piece of paper.

However, unlike any other Rolls-Royce, it also began with a bolt of finest hand-woven silk.

The painting style used for the Serenity silk design is a centuries-old technique known as ‘unconscious painting’. Much of the Japanese art of painting was learned through nature and required a very fine line to depict forms such as branches, leaves, flowers, bamboo, etc. The apprentice was obliged to repeat these exercises thousands of times until he could paint the forms unconsciously, lending them a serene quality, which is achieved with different states of artistic meditation.

More than Silk Of course, in creating the most opulent interior of any luxury car the designers could not simply rely on silk upholstery; the interior has also been fitted with smoked cherry wood with bamboo cross banding and the finest marquetry that allows for the insertion of mother-of-pearl flowers into the rear doors. The front seats are dressed in arctic white leather and the clock and instrument cluster have been made in motherof-pearl with engraved concentric circles reminiscent of Japanese gardens. The tasteful detail of two arctic white leather umbrellas featuring the theme of serenity await Serenity users inside the boot.

The exterior finish is equally remarkable, the paint that covers the body of this unique vehicle being made of mother-ofpearl and involving three stages of painting, more than twelve hours of hand polishing and a pearl effect, the most expensive ever used on a car.

III Международный фестиваль российского кино: СОЕДИНЕНИЕ ИСКУССТВА И БЛАГОТВОРИТЕЛЬНОСТИ Торжественное закрытие III Международного фестиваля российского кино и церемония награждения состоялись 6 марта в Марбелье в Don Carlos Hotel. Согласно решению жюри, лучшим фильмом была признана картина “Испытание”. Лучшим актером стал Константин Лавроненко за работу в фильме “Как меня зовут”, а лучшей актрисой Елена Ан за главную роль в фильме “Испытание”. Приз зрительских симпатий достался картине “Любовь в СССР”. Лучшим режиссером назван Иван Твердовский за ленту “Класс корекции”. Премию за лучший сценарий получила картина “Игра в правду”, а лучшая музыка Алексея Айги прозвучала в фильме ”Испытание”. Гуманитарной стороной Международного фестиваля российского кино в Марбелье явилось открытие площадки для запуска проекта «Дети Солнца». Эта акция солидарности Международного испанско-русского форума служит налаживанию связей между медицинскими учреждениями в обеих странах и привлечению внимания к детям с онкологическими заболеваниями.
