National Center for Nanoscience Competence - C’Nano Support for research, training and valorization Recognized as a CNRS service unit since 2017, C’Nano has been structuring research in nanoscience and nanotechnology for more than 10 years. It aims to facilitate research and innovation in «nanos» to strengthen France’s competitiveness in this field. It consists of 6 territorial offices and is attached to three thematic institutes of the CNRS: INP (physics), INC (chemistry), INSIS (sciences of engineering and systems). Its missions revolve around three pillars: «research», «training & dissemination of knowledge», and «innovation».

C’

Nano federates, within a national network, more than 7,000 academic actors in the nanosciences from over 300 laboratories and 560 research teams from the CNRS and its partners (universities, CEA, INSERM, INRA...). It carries out a work of display, promotion and sensitization to research and innovation in nanosciences, and to the perception of “nanos” by the general public. C’Nano promotes a transversal and transdisciplinary approach to research and supports the development of advanced instrument platforms. In terms of scientific animation, it organizes various colloquiums and scientific workshops (including an annual national congress, a Franco-Japanese workshop on nanomaterials) on topics targeted according to the scientific news in the «nanos».

C’Nano has recently been developing a continuous foresight activity, closely linked to research stakeholders and the 3 CNRS institutes, in order to detect weak signals in research and innovation on various “nanos” themes. Currently, it is involved in two studies: a study of PIPAME (Interdepartmental Pole of Foresight and Anticipation

of Economic Change) entitled “Nanomaterials, issues for the French sector”, is conducted with consulting company In Extenso Innovation Growth; another one, sponsored by the Record association and conducted with the company Eco In’EAU, focuses on the potential of use of electronic noses. At the training level, C’Nano has set itself the goal of cataloging and mapping French training courses in nanoscience, which today are too diffuse to be clearly identified. It is a matter of proposing the right training according to the professional project of the student, the news in research, the big stakes in “nanos” and the evolution of the regulation. On January 16, 2019, C’Nano organized a training day in Paris to raise the awareness of the students of the Master C’Nano of the Universities of Nantes and Rennes and those of Polytech Sorbonne to the concept «safer by design», which aims to minimize the exposure or ecotoxicity of nanomaterials taking into account the entire life cycle, in order to optimize the risk / benefit ratio. The LabEx SERENADE (Safe (r) Ecodesign Research and Education Applied to NAnomaterial Development), partner of this event, presented its research and innovation activities on the subject. In terms of exchanges with society, C’Nano has set up experiments at the Palais de la Découverte, particularly in the framework of the Year of Light in 2015. In partnership with various associations, it has piloted for high school students the projects “Nanos in the skin” in 20122013 in the PACA

region and “Focus on Nanos” in 2015 in the Île-de-France region. In this context, the different “nanos” themes, the research professions and the societal challenges of “nanos” were discussed. These actions also help to develop students’ critical thinking through the analysis of “nanos” data, risk assessment and argumentation based on reliable and consolidated scientific results. In terms of technology transfer, C’Nano relied on its proximity and its relationship of trust with researchers and PhD students to set up an upgrading program including an annual residential school “Valorisation of research through business creation” for doctoral students at the end of their doctorate (a partnership with Éric Langrognet, Professor and Head of the Centrale Entrepreneurs sector at Ecole Centrale). It will soon relaunch its “valo” call for projects for doctoral students in its network: the promoters of the selected projects will benefit from training in entrepreneurship professions followed by a 12 to 18 month coaching to accompany them, from market studies to the filing of the statutes of the start-up with, for models, «nanos» start-ups supported by the C’Nano such as Abbelight (innovative solutions for nanoscopy and membrane imaging in biology), Cherry Biotech (development of new drugs) or Polytheragene (polymerbased technologies).
