BLACK BALL 2023
The year of 2023 marked the return of celebrating Black Excellence at Pierce College through food, music, and dance along with the relaunch of the 4th Annual Black Ball! Through a partnership between the Fort Steilacoom Campus’s Black Student Union and the Puyallup Office of Student Life, the Black Ball illuminated vibrant cultures and rich traditions of our African American and African students during Black History Month. The Office of Student Life worked with a mix of regional talent, local vendors and BIPOC-owned businesses to provide a range of services. The Black Ball featured guest performances by T-Ray the Violinist, Kazual & DJ Alkstar Over 230 students, staff and friends attended the Black Ball, which brought together so many different community members after the impact of isolation COVID created. Many students expressed their joy in being able to come together again in their comments on the Black Ball survey-
“I have been feeling lonely for a couple weeks, and the ball was a way for me to hang out with friends again in a stress-free environment.”
“I enjoyed Everything, seeing as the day was my birthday the timing just seemed perfect and I loved every second.”
“Kazual & T-Ray were big highlights. “
We are also grateful for the legacy of the BSU faculty advisors and BSU Alumni opening our dinner program. We were inspired by their speeches and support throughout the Black Ball planning. We are looking forward to strengthening the BSU at both Fort Steilacoom & Puyallup and offer thanks for their unwavering dedication to representation and empowerment!
