MESSAGES This month we premiere “A Conversation with Roy Clark” and I admit to you that I pushed my way into the taping at our Tulsa studio. (Sorry Dick Pryor!) I’ve met plenty of famous people and have managed to remain professional…but this was Roy Clark. He’s a country music icon and a Tulsa treasure. Roy Clark is a Country Music Hall of Famer who’s hosted The Tonight Show and appeared on cool shows like Love American Style and The Odd Couple. He was a boxer and baseball player before becoming “The Superpicker” and he’s still active today.
When I think of OETA, the one thing that comes to mind is the strong relationship that we have with our supporters. There is a special bond, a trust that stems from sharing unique, inspiring programs and special projects. Your trust, your support has pushed OETA to become the most watched PBS network in the country. With your trust comes responsibility, and OETA takes our responsibility to serve you and your community very seriously – by providing unrivaled programming, educational initiatives that deliver true impact, and engaging projects that reach beyond the broadcast.
As co-host of Hee Haw for more than 20 years, Clark picked his banjo and told truly corny jokes to 30 million people each week. My family was among them. We watched EVERY Saturday night at 6 o’clock on Tulsa’s Channel 6. Mom thought the show was ridiculous, but Dad loved it and we all had fun with that internal battle. My brother and I still bond over it. That is a gift I cherish. My father passed away many years ago. Meeting Mr. Clark, who favors my dad, was a truly special moment that felt like home. He’s kind, smart, engaging, interesting and has the brightest blue eyes ever. I’m in love. You’ll love him, too. Enjoy the show.
Your support ensures OETA remains the most accessible, innovative, educational and cultural institution in Oklahoma, utilizing the power of public media – online, on-air and in the community – to provide lifelong learning and meaningful experiences for every Oklahoman. I can’t thank you enough for your support on this important journey. Only with your support can OETA grow like never before. Thank you and enjoy Festival 2015!

This is Peter, Paul and Mary at the peak of their artistry, a time when this popular and influential trio dominated the Billboard music charts. COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE ME HOME At the peak of his fame in the 1970s, John Denver was the most popular singer in America. He performed at sold-out concerts, his albums sold more than 100 million copies, his TV specials got top ratings, and he was named poet laureate of his adopted Colorado. Yet this man, who brought happiness to millions, was filled with insecurity, suffered from depression, and was savaged by the music critics. Exploring the private life and public legacy of America’s Everyman, this intimate profile includes exclusive accounts from those closest to him, including former wives and managers, his son and brother, the musicians who toured with him for decades and the friends who knew the real John Denver.
Shot before a live audience at the historic Grand Opera House in Belfast, the special stars Northern Irish pop tenor Eamonn McCrystal and features performances by singer-songwriter Brian Kennedy, Broadway star Rachel Tucker, and singers-songwriters Keith and Kristyn Getty, all of whom hail from Northern Ireland. The concert celebrates a wide array of music and artists originating from the country, including Van Morrison (“Moondance,”“Brown Eyed Girl”) and Jimmy Kennedy (“Red Sails in the Sunset,”“South of the Border”), along with haunting, traditional pieces like “Carrickfergus,”“Danny Boy” and more.
From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” based in the heart of New York’s theatre district, presented live special performances by cast members from the most beloved stage musicals of Broadway’s golden age. Not seen for decades since their original broadcasts, these rare selections include legends Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, John Raitt, Gwen Verdon, Dick Van Dyke, Richard Burton and others in songs from classics such as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweet Charity, George M! and Camelot. Hosted by Broadway legend Shirley Jones. ODYSSEY | MARCH 2015

A CONVERSATION WITH... ROY CLARK Thursday March 26 at 7 p.m.
STILL PICKIN’ He’s been a professional boxer, a television actor, owned race horses, flown with the Blue Angels, and hosted The Tonight Show. He’s performed with many of the biggest stars in show business and sold millions of records. For the last half-century he’s been one of America’s favorite entertainers and since the mid-1970’s he’s called Tulsa home. He’s Roy Clark and he talks to Dick Pryor about his remarkable career, his music, and of course, his “pickin’ and grinnin’” on Hee-Haw. A natural clown and musician, Roy tells about his professional successes even as he struggled with personal setbacks and the sacrifices of life on the road. He hit the national stage at the age of 17 when he won the USA Banjo Championship and a chance to play at the Grand Ole Opry. Talent, perseverance and a little luck finally started to pay off and by the early 1960’s national audiences fell in love with Roy’s fast-playing, quick wit and folksy charm. It’s an amazing story – told by Roy Clark himself.
DYNAMIC EUROPE
RICK STEVES’ DYNAMIC EUROPE: AMSTERDAM, PRAGUE, BERLIN Sunday March 1 at 4 p.m.
Rick Steves travels to the dynamic European capitols of Prague, Amsterdam and Berlin. In each city, Rick shares his valuable insights on art, culture and history, along with his practical, experience-enhancing travel advice. In Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, Rick experiences its massive castle, beloved statue-lined bridge, evocative Jewish Quarter, and thrilling 20th-century history while enjoying its infectious love of music and some of the tastiest beer in Europe. Then, he explores uniquely entertaining Amsterdam, a quaint yet jarring city filled with Rembrandts and Van Goghs, more bikes than cars, and coffeeshops — all beneath tall, skinny facades leaning out below quaint church towers. In reunited Berlin, Rick finds evocative memorials and other reminders of the city’s 20th-century tumult, and enjoys its now-trendy east side, people-friendly riverfront and vibrant social scene.
HUNGARIAN STRINGS ZOLTAN MAGA: FROM BUDAPEST WITH LOVE Thursday March 5 at 7 p.m.
CARRERAS DOMINGO PAVAROTTI IN CONCERT Tuesday March 3 at 7 p.m.
THREE TENORS RETURN The late Luciano Pavarotti was one of the most popular singers in music history. One of the landmark events in his career was a triumphant show with fellow masters José Carreras and Plácido Domingo—together, known as the “Three Tenors”— vividly brought to life in the notable concert special amongst the ruins of Rome’s historic Baths of Caracalla. Combining three of the greatest voices to ever grace a stage, the special brings forth an eclectic and stunning evening of music.
Enjoy Budapest’s historic landmarks as violinist Zoltán Maga performs several violin classics in scenic locations around the city, including the historic Vigadó Concert Hall on the Danube River. Zoltán has performed in concert halls throughout Europe for audiences who embrace his classical crossover style and endearing personality. Zoltán and his guest ensemble perform a heart-rending and exhilarating selection of familiar waltzes, wonderful arias, and light classical pieces.

DATED MATERIAL: POSTMASTER PLEASE DELIVER BY FEBRUARY 28, 2015
Monday March 30 Wednesday April 1 at 8 p.m. Join the OETA Cancer Project Visit oeta.tv/cancer to attend a community screening, share and view stories of hope, find teaching materials, watch digital short films, and to access local resources from the American Cancer Society.
#CancerFilm CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES tells the comprehensive story of cancer, from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. At six hours, the film interweaves a sweeping historical narrative with intimate stories about contemporary patients, and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, within sight of lasting cures.
