DEAR OES COMMUNITY,

O

N ANY DAY LAST YEAR, and in any division, you could

have walked the halls and peeked into rooms where you would see students who were engaged, creating, making things happen, and working together. What’s more, they were happy being at school.

That is the most important thing to know about what was happening last year at Oregon Episcopal School. At every level, students interacted individually and in small groups with our dedicated faculty and staff and with their peers to seek answers to intriguing questions. The children grew physically, mentally, and in their ability to understand and positively impact the world around them.

PLANNING FOR NEW FACILITIES first required a new iteration of our campus master plan and identification of the most critical improvements. The most urgent need was determined to be a new facility to serve our younger students, including additional collaborative, project, and interdisciplinary work spaces as well as outdoor learning and play spaces. Continued planning work for a new Beginning School/Lower School building will proceed during the next year. DURING THE COMING YEAR, we also will complete our self-study for renewing our accreditation through the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS). We will continue improving the coordination of our curriculum from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade. And, as always, our students will continue to ask questions, seek answers, and present their findings. They will work individually and with each other to create new works of art and literature and to build their physical strength through our PE, Athletic and Outdoor programs. They will address spiritual and moral issues, and they will use their developing powers to make this world a better place for all of us. As I begin my second year at OES, I am thankful to be in a community with these talented youngsters and with all of you who are helping them grow by providing an environment where they can reach their highest potential. I look forward to the coming year with enthusiasm for the good work we are doing.

“I am thankful to be in a community with these talented youngsters and with all of you who are helping them grow”

THIS GROWTH AND PROGRESS was due in no small part to the generosity of those who have donated to the OES Fund, supported the auction, contributed to the endowment, and volunteered for the school. Those gifts supplement tuition to enrich the program at all levels and allow the school to enroll qualified students who otherwise could not afford an OES education.

AS THE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN WORKING toward their futures, groups of adults have been meeting to plan for the future of the school. We have progressed toward the strategic goal of enhancing the visibility of OES in the community through improved branding and marketing so we can continue to attract highly qualified students. We have defined the framework for our curricular program by formulating the OES Essential Competencies, a blueprint that is built on the concept of 21st century skills— those proficiencies students will need to thrive in their future. And we have identified the improvements in our facilities that are needed to support student mastery of the Essential Competencies.

Warmly,

Mo Copeland Head of School

FINANCIAL REVIEW 2011-12

Philanthropy: Vital to our Mission PHILANTHROPY PROVIDES ESSENTIAL SUPPORT for the operating budget as well as for the school’s long-term vision. OES relies on the continued generosity of donors to help accomplish our mission of preparing students to realize their power for good as citizens of local and world communities: ²²Annual giving supports the programs of the school today. ²²Capital gifts help develop campus facilities and program resources. ²²Gifts to the endowment provide stable funding for the future. ENDOWMENT ASSETS BENEFIT OES. Endowment income funds department chairs, financial aid, and curricular initiatives at the heart of our excellence. Ongoing support of the endowment from alumnae/i, parents, and friends will ensure the long-term financial health of the school. STEADY, LONG-TERM GROWTH of the endowment and stable enrollment have helped OES continue to fund outstanding programs without compromise. The OES endowment has rebounded from the declines in 2008 and 2009 and stood at $20.9 million at the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 2012. OES opened the 2011-12 school year with enrollment of 844 students. Enrollment for 2012-13 is 851.

THE SCHOOL RELIES ON donations and non-tuition revenues to fund a portion of its operating budget, allowing OES to maintain the highest standards of academic and extracurricular excellence. Funds raised in support of the OES Fund, auction, and other restricted purposes and annual income from the endowment provide critical funding for educational programming. In total, the sum of annual donations, endowment revenue, and net revenue contributions from auxiliary programs make a significant difference in helping contain tuition growth.

THE HALLMARK OF AN OES EDUCATION is the strong relationship between students and faculty. Spending focuses on areas that most directly impact students, with faculty compensation as the largest and most important use of funds. Other student-focused spending includes instructional programs and materials, financial aid, and physical plant. Operating reserves are maintained to provide financial stability and funding for future expenses. Reserves currently stand at 10% of annual operating expenses.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS Outright gifts, planned gifts, and bequests are instrumental in building the OES endowment, benefitting students and teachers with funding for student financial aid, faculty salaries, teacher professional development, and enrichment programs. Benefactors may choose to endow scholarships, chairs, programs, buildings, or other important aspects of OES. The Development Office can help donors plan a gift annuity, bequest, or trust that will provide income and tax benefits in addition to supporting the school.

ELIZABETH AND MARGARET REEVES Elizabeth (below left) and Margaret Reeves were sisters who attended St. Helen’s Hall (SHH), graduating in 1932 and 1930, respectively. They both went on to study at St. Helen’s Hall Junior College (JC). Both girls attended SHH and JC on scholarship. Elizabeth repaid that generosity by establishing charitable trusts, to which Margaret contributed, to benefit the school after their deaths. The trusts have funded the Elizabeth Reeves and Margaret Reeves Yick Scholarship Fund.

JAKE STULTS Jake Stults was a talented musician and a patient, caring math and computer science teacher in the OES Upper School. After his death in 2010, Jake’s family established The Jake Stults Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The endowment is a fitting way to honor the memory of Jake’s intelligence, talent, youth, and vigor. It allows OES to provide increased financial aid to deserving students for generations to come.

THE BELL SOCIETY The Bell Society honors and recognizes individuals who have either established an endowment during their lifetime and/or provided for Oregon Episcopal School through their estate plans. For 143 years, OES has benefitted from the long-range planning and vision of thoughtful trustees, alumnae/i, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends.

OUTRIGHT GIFT OR BEQUEST USED TO ESTABLISH A NAMED ENDOWMENT

SUSIE KASPER ’65 After talking with a fellow alumna who wanted to send her child to OES but couldn’t afford tuition, Susie Kasper ’65 decided to endow a fund to provide scholarships for children and grandchildren of alumnae/i of St. Helen’s Hall, Bishop Dagwell Hall, and OES. Some of her classmates joined her in contributing to the fund, which Susie then named the Class of 1965 Alumnae/i Scholarship Fund. Her planned gift will allow students in the future to receive the same education and blessings that changed the lives of people like her.

ANNUAL GIVING TO OES Tuition covers only a portion of the cost of educating our students. The remainder is bridged by income from auxiliary programs, revenue from endowment investments, the auction, and the OES Fund. This model is similar to the business model of all independent schools that are sustained by the good works and charitable resources of the community they serve. Annual Giving supports the people and programs that make OES so special, including talented teachers, small classes, and exceptional offerings in every aspect of a student’s education.

OES FUND CHAIR ELIZABETH GEWECKE This year’s OES Fund surpassed our goal, due in no small part to the dedication and enthusiasm of our OES Fund volunteer team. Volunteers participated in phonathons, wrote personal notes, made thank-you telephone calls, hosted coffees, and answered countless questions on behalf of the school’s annual giving program. Many thanks to our volunteers and to the more than 800 people who donated to the OES Fund this year!

12

DONOR SPOTLIGHT GERALDINE HANNY SARGENT ’35 According to our school records, Geraldine Hanny Sargent ’35 started making an annual gift to the School in 1968 with a donation of $5. It was a modest gift, but it was the beginning of a personal tradition. Since then, she has given almost every year, and sometimes she has donated twice a year, with her contributions gradually increasing to $3,000 annually. Geraldine has also provided for OES through her estate plans, ensuring that her legacy of generosity endures. Consistent annual giving from loyal alumnae/i such as Geraldine has helped OES provide for students in good economic times and in more difficult times.

ANNUAL GIVING, RESTRICTED We are grateful to everyone in the OES community whose philanthropy supports the mission of the School and helps place OES among the finest Pre-K through 12 schools in the Pacific Northwest. The following individuals and organizations made gifts designated to special purposes between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012.

AASK The AASK (Aardvarks Advocating Skills and Knowledge) program at OES provides an important service to our community, while being a key element in fulfilling the school’s mission to educate students to realize their power for good. The partnership with Beaverton School District is carried out specifically with Whitford Middle School with a focus on school-year tutoring and a summer literacy-based day camp. AASK makes a critical difference in the lives of students who are English Language Learners from low-income families at Whitford and has a profound impact on the OES students who serve as tutors.

AUCTION CHAIR REBECCA ROBERTS Aardy’s Big Gig treated close to 400 people to an energy-packed rock festival and auction in March. Chaired by Rebecca (pictured here with her husband, Evan ’88), the event featured a silent auction, dinner and live auction where even Elvis made an appearance. The evening’s special appeal highlighted how the OES journey from Lower School through Upper School leads students to fulfillment of their dreams and aspirations.

CORPORATIONS & FOUNDATIONS Every year OES receives financial support through a generous community of foundations, charitable trusts, and corporations.

CORPORATIONS

CORPORATE SPOTLIGHT THE ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE OES is grateful for corporate partners who support the school through the auction, gifts-in-kind, and donations. The Original Pancake House, founded in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke, is a secondand third-generation family business. Their recipes demand the finest of ingredients, and the menu features signature items such as Apple Pancakes, Dutch Babies and omelets. This year, the Highet family offered up an auction special—breakfast in PJs with Head of Lower School David Lowell.

TRIBUTES: IN MEMORY

IN MEMORY OF JEANNIE RAWLEY

IN MEMORY OF BISHOP DUNLAP DAGWELL

Beloved Third Grade teacher Jeannie Rawley left behind a legacy of inspiration when she died unexpectedly on December 31, 2011. She had been at OES for 12 years. In addition to her classroom teaching, she had taught yoga to students and colleagues and was known as a knitter, dragon boat paddler, cyclist, and friend. She shared fruit and lavender that she grew on her Hood River-area farm, and she often brought her dog Bodie with her to school. She will be missed by her colleagues, former students, and many friends.

Dennis O’Leary’s father died when Dennis was a child. Bishop Dagwell took the young boy under his wing, providing guidance during Dennis’ childhood and youth. From altar boy to assistant, Dennis appreciated the Bishop’s mentoring influence throughout his life. Dennis was buried with the Bible which the Bishop had given him years earlier. The relationship was so meaningful to Dennis that he ensured he could leave a tribute by designating a portion of his life insurance to provide a gift in memory of Bishop Benjamin Dunlap Dagwell. In 1965, a boys’ school was founded on the campus of St. Helen’s Hall and was named for Bishop Benjamin Dunlap Dagwell, who had served as Bishop of Oregon from 1936-1958.

PCL CHAIR CAREY KILLIAN Parent volunteers have been an essential part of the school for decades, and since 1992 they have had an organization to coordinate their efforts. The Parent Community Link (PCL) was created in 1992, then called Volunteers Common Link, and continues to organize volunteers in the classroom, at the auction, and for many other community efforts.
