Journey to Greece Travels

to Constantinople t

he Journey to Greece program—also known as The Journey, which is offered by AHEPA in collaboration with the University of Indianapolis in Athens, enters its fourth consecutive year in 2009. The University of Indianapolis, a top tier U.S. University accredited by the prestigious Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, has worked with AHEPA to offer the program since 2006. The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the largest association of Greek Americans and philhellenes in the world, is well known for its work in philanthropy, education and promotion of Hellenism. The Journey to Greece, which combines classes in Greek studies with excursions to places of interest, serves to introduce students, some for the first time, to the beauty of Greece, its history and its culture. Since the majority of students are GreekAmericans, the Journey holds a particular significance for them as they return to their ancestral home. Ike Gulas, AHEPA’s Supreme President, remarked “As the Journey goes from strength to strength the order of AHEPA recognizes the important contribution it

makes, offering educational opportunities that simultaneously support the cause of Hellenism.” 2009 promises to be a special year, following in the steps of 2008, which combined two sections of the Journey with the AHEPA National Convention held in Athens. High-level meetings have become important Journey events and each year the students have been invited to visit the US Embassy and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Athens. However, 2009 will have a very special highlight due to Supreme President, Ike Gulas’s visit to Constantinople in 2008, which resulted in an invitation from His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, to visit the Patriachate and the Halki Seminary. Gracefully accepting His All Holiness’s invitation, the conclusion of the 2009 Journey to Greece will see the students making the pilgrimage to Constantinople, and along the way, taking in many of the places of interest in northern Greece. Journey to Greece Session I starts July 5 and ends July 18, Session II starts July 20 and ends August 18, more information can be found at www.ahepa.org/journey.
