city for the largest celebration of Irish traditional music, song and dance anywhere in the world. Fleadh Cheoil is a key element in the 2013 City of Culture programme, and we are proud to roll out an intensive eight day festival that reflects the true music and culture of Ireland through a wide and varied events programme. A core theme to this year’s fleadh is a Gathering of Traditions. 2013 is the year of the Gathering, and with this in mind we have programmed a series of concerts that draw links between nations with significant cultural connections to Ireland, as well as honouring some of the stylistic nuances in Irish traditional music across the country. It is important not to forget about the historic value of Fleadh Cheoil crossing the border for the first time. We are delighted to celebrate the occasion with performances by individuals synonymous with Irish culture in Derry. Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney and champion of traditional singing Cara Dillon will feature in rare and exclusive performances for the first All-Ireland fleadh in the city. There has been a great emphasis on Fleadh Cheoil ‘13 reflecting the digital age, and thus we are delighted to present the groundbreaking FleadhLive, an online music show that will broadcast across the world in real-time. I would like to thank the inspiring and dedicated team of people who have been working on the fleadh over the past eighteen months, especially the wider Comhaltas family, and our generous funders, partners and sponsors who have enabled us to put together a top quality programme of an international standard. Getting Here BY AIR The North of Ireland is served by flights into City of Derry Airport, Belfast International Airport and Belfast City Airport. Scheduled air services operate from nearly all major UK airports. There are many direct flights from major European cities. Major airlines operate scheduled services from the US and Canada to Belfast International Airport via UK and Republic of Ireland airports. Additionally, there are charter flights direct from New York and Toronto to Belfast.
BY BOAT We have first-class ferry connections with Scotland, England and the Isle of Man. New, high-speed vessels, enhanced on-board amenities, entertainment and shopping, together with lower prices, make the car ferry a very attractive way to go.
BY TRAIN Currently there are nine return Monday to Friday train services to and from Doire, operating a 2 hourly service from 06.38am until 11.28pm, connecting Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballymena, Antrim and Belfast.

The line-up, under the musical direction of dobro maestro Jerry Douglas (Alison Krauss’ Union Station), boasts an incredible calibre of musicians, including Dan Tyminski (O Brother Where Art Thou?) and Grammy award winner Tim O’Brien, whose songs have been covered by the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks and Nickel Creek. Tim will duet with one of Ireland’s foremost traditional musicians, guitarist Arty McGlynn.
Joining this stellar line up will be the peerless voice of Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader and the beautiful Gaelic vocals of Karen Matheson. They will share the stage with one of Ireland’s finest contemporary singersongwriters, Declan O’Rourke. Ultra-classy accompaniment and awesome instrumentals will be supplied by a similarly crème-de-la-crème array of Celtic talent, including Manchester born master of Uilleann pipes, flute and whistle, Michael McGoldrick, Scottish multi-instrumentalist John McCusker, young Irish piper Jarlath Henderson, Capercaillie’s Donald Shaw, talented guitarist and founder of Solas John Doyle, English folk legend Danny Thompson on bass, and percussion ace James Mackintosh. Derry’s own Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney joins master uilleann piper Liam O’Flynn in an exclusive performance of ‘The Poet and the Piper’. Audiences from around the world have enjoyed this intimate presentation that weaves the iconic poetry of Seamus Heaney with traditional and contemporary music performed by Liam O’Flynn. Originally released as an album in 2003, The Poet and the Piper was designed to echo W.B. Yeats’ St Patrick’s Day reading of poetry with music in 1934.

Derry, Cara Dillon won the All-Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy aged 12. Her last album, Hill Of Thieves, won Album of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and the title track was voted among Northern Ireland’s all-
time top 10 original songs by BBC Radio Ulster listeners in 2012. She will be accompanied by the Orchestra of Ireland, a 33-strong gathering of Ireland’s most talented classical musicians, who will breathe new life into a selection of her best-loved songs with breathtaking orchestral arrangements. Dervish are one of the most sought-after acts in Irish folk music. They are renowned for their powerful, energetic dance tunes and magnificent interpretations of Irish songs and airs. This is all interwoven with Cathy Jordan’s beguiling voice and engaging stage presence. 2013 sees the Sligo band release a new album, The Thrush in the Storm, which will be showcased at Fleadh Cheoil ‘13.

Beoga have gaining notoriety for their charismatic rapport with audiences and highly energetic performances. Their unique sound features the twin duelling accordions of Damian McKee and multiinstrumentalist Seán Óg Graham, pianist Liam Bradley, four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and Niamh Dunne, one of Ireland’s premier young talents, on vocals and fiddle.
Tickets: £10 At 27, Damien Mullane has a musical CV that any veteran musician would be proud of. He began his professional career as the accordionist in Frankie Gavin’s band De Dannan, and has just released his first album to wide acclaim. He will be accompanied by Trevor Hutchinson and Donogh Hennessy.

The flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, the guitar of Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John Joe Kelly weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes into the breathtaking sound of the groundbreaking band Flook. This group possesses a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. Since she was 18, when she astounded the Celtic music world by winning the Senior All-Ireland Championship, Liz Carroll and her fiddle have been amazing audiences around the globe. She is a winner of the NEA National Heritage award, and an Irish Echo Traditional Artist of the Year. She will be joined by Trevor Hutchinson and Séan Óg Graham. This duo’s powerful blend of passion and virtuosity is infectious. What sets them apart from most folk/ Celtic acts is their free-wheeling approach to live performance. Tim Edey & Brendan Power love to improvise, which means that every time they do a piece it sounds different & fresh. It’s that sheer mad spontaneity which unfailingly captures audiences everywhere! Dave Sheridan’s flute playing has been described as “a highly accomplished free flowing fluid style, with sound technique and solid driving rhythm” (Hot Press). He will be joined on stage by Donal and Michael McCague, who together hold an array of musical accolades, including a TG4 Gradam Ceoil.

from Derry to the Sea Date: Sunday 11 August Time: 7PM Venue: St. Columb’s Cathedral Tickets: Free admission Lorcán Mac Mathúna is an improvising singer and composer with a special interest in the nature of vocal music. His many projects investigate and elaborate on the improvising nature of the human voice in solo and collaborative settings. This includes acappella Sean-Nós singing, contemporary compositions of an improvised nature, music composition theory based on poetic forms, and much, much more.
In a specially-commissioned musical work for Fleadh Cheoil ‘13, Lorcán will explore the theme of the River Foyle and how it has shaped the stories of Derry people down through the ages. It involves voices of Derry from different eras in its history, from the accounts of Colmcille to the words of present day communities. From Derry to the Sea is essentially an ode to the city, following the journey from its foundation to the 21st Century. The piece has been informed by creative, collaborative workshops with Derry people conducted by Lorcán in the lead up to the Fleadh, and these people will form part of this very special performance on the opening night of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Imirce: Songs of Emigration Date: Tuesday 13 August Time: 8PM Venue: The Glassworks Tickets: £8 Hosted by BBC Northern Ireland’s Lynette Fay, this is an intimate concert with performances of emigration songs old and new by Ireland’s best known traditional folk singers hosted in the city’s
newest venue, the Glassworks. Imirce will feature artists with their roots in Ireland with a particular focus on the rich singing tradition of the North, including Coleraine singer and banjo player Damien O’Kane, Belfast songwriter Barry Kerr, and Dungiven-born Mary Dillon who recently released her debut solo album, North. The legendary Skara Brae members Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill and Co. Kerry singer Pauline Scanlon will complete the very special line-up.
Highlands & Islands Date: Wednesday 14 August Time: 1PM Venue: Guildhall Tickets: £5 This concert will include one of Scottish music’s traditional singing dynasties, the Campbells of Greepe. Their music originates in the Isle of Skye,
and they have a rich repertoire that includes many ‘puirt a beul’ pieces that have become popular choices of the likes of Julie Fowlis and Karen Matheson. John Sikorski will also perform with them, demonstrating his unique brand of progressive sean nós dancing to their mouth music. Also appearing is award-winning Scottish duo Rona Wilkie & Marit Falt, who will treat us to brand new Scottish folk music augmented by a string quartet.
Across the Atlantic Date: Thursday 15 August Time: 1PM Venue: Guildhall Tickets: £5 A line-up of North American acts, including Liz Carroll, accompanied by Sean Óg Graham and Trevor Hutchinson. This will be Liz’s first visit to
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in many years. Tim Eriksen from New England will perform songs from his unique repertoire, which is heavily influenced by bluegrass and American spiritual music, but also draws heavily from the Irish traditional songbook. Troy McGillivray from Nova Scotia will also feature in the concert alongside Andrea Beaton and Matt MacIsaac, shining a light on the distinctive Cape Breton fiddle and piano accompaniment styles.

Hidden Fermanagh Date: Thursday 15 August Time: 8PM Venue: The Glassworks Tickets: £5 A special concert featuring the songs and tunes of County Fermanagh, as featured in the 2003 bookalbum project Hidden Fermanagh, highlighting all
the mystique and yet plain style of little-known Fermanagh traditional music. Under the direction of Boys of the Lough singer Cathal McConnell and writer Cyril Maguire, this concert features a group of musicians synonymous with the Fermanagh tradition, including Gabriel McArdle, Pat & Valerie McManus, Jim McGrath, Rosie Stewart, Catherine Nugent, Brenda McCann, Francis Rasdale and Annette Owens.
the Meitheal Orchestra Date: Friday 16 August Time: 1PM Venue: Guildhall Tickets: £5 Ireland’s finest young trad musicians assemble once again for the Meitheal Reunion Concert at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
Featuring the winning group and soloist from Meitheal 2013, the centerpiece is a 60-strong orchestra performing newly-arranged music in the exquisite surroundings of Derry’s historic Guildhall. With a dazzling array of performers on fiddles, flutes, harps and the other popular instruments, there will be guest appearances by Meitheal tutors such as Martin and Kavan Donohoe, Garry Shannon and Ernestine Healey.

Dúchas Dhoire Date: Friday 16 August Time: 7PM Venue: Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin Tickets: £5 Dúchas Dhoire is a celebration of the history of Irish traditional music in Derry, and will feature performances from those synonymous with the
tradition in the city. This will include singers, musicians, All-Ireland champions and instrument makers, offering the Derry people a chance to celebrate together the historic occasion of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann arriving in the city and north of the border for the very first time. Performances will come from Dermot McLaughlin, Peter Tracey, Finbar McLaughlin, Joe McHugh, Brian Stafford, Brian Mullen and the Carlin family.
Fiddlers of Aileach Date: Saturday 17 August Time: 1PM Venue: The Glassworks Tickets: £5 Dinny McLaughlin’s contribution to the world of traditional music and the culture of Ireland is immeasurable. Countless generations will
remember this great man and pay homage to his teaching achievements, the great music he has composed for them and the magnificent way in which he has pioneered the establishment of Inishowen as an area of excellence for traditional music, song and dance. Friends and pupils of Dinny will join him on stage for Fiddlers of Aileach, a celebratory concert to mark the launch of a new film and album in honour of his work.

the way of Colmcille Date: Wednesday 14 August Time: 6:15PM Venue: Guildhall Square Tickets: Free admission Last year, an ancient medieval pilgrimage tradition relating to Saint Colmcille was celebrated in Derry for the first time in more than four hundred years. This year, it is intended to continue this newly revived tradition. We hope as many as possible - locals and visitors - will participate in this celebration and follow the pipers and singers on Cosán na nOilithreach, the actual pilgrimage trail from Port na Long (on the bank of the Foyle) to the site of DubhReigleas - the medieval cathedral of Derry - a short but fascinating journey.
The group will assemble at Port na Lang (behind Guildhall) and proceed up Cosán na nOilithreach (Magazine Street) to the sound of singing and piping with the banners held high. The group will progress to First Derry Presbyterian Church, St. Augustine’s Church on the walls, and finish the journey at St. Columba’s Church, the Long Tower. Music and readings will be provided along the way from Scottish and Irish performers.

It kicks off with Sontas at the opening ceremony, a ten piece group that draws on the influences of both their Irish and Scottish backgrounds and finishes with the Battlefield Band on the Ebrington stage as part of the closing celebrations. Perfect Friction are a seven piece band from Wicklow. Their music ranges from high-energy trad sets to pop and rock songs tastefully arranged with a trad theme. The Friel Sisters, Anna, Sheila and Clare, are young traditional musicians hailing from Glasgow/Donegal – they play a mixture of music interspersed with songs, many from their family repertoire. World renowned local bands including the Churchill Flute Band, the William King Memorial Band, the Burntollet Sons of Ulster and Pride of the Orange & Blue will perform on various outdoor stages over the weekend alongside educational master-classes, exhibitions and a play on marching bands, The Pride.

EXHIBITION: Famine Folio by Ivan Armstrong Date: All week Venue: Playhouse Theatre ‘Famine Folio’ is the work of Belfast artist Ivan Armstrong and consists of a suite of 8 large etchings which refer to conditions, incidents and legislation during the period 1845-49 which has been described as ‘Ireland’s Auswicz’. The exhibition is best viewed in sequence and it is only in the final piece that the audience is given an insight into the artist’s view of the events of the period.

These musicians are traditionalists, but are not necessarily traditional, never hidebound to the conventions of the music of their homeland. While other Celtic bands might keep the tradition alive, the Battlefield Band keeps the music alive. Including Derry city’s own Sean O’Donnell on guitars and vocals, this internationally-acclaimed band will kickstart the spectacular closing proceedings for Fleadh Cheoil ‘13.
