Supporting Floriculture Since 1947

The San Diego County Flower & Plant Association is a trade association of commercial cut flower and potted plant growers and supporting firms in Southern California that was established in 1947. San Diego County is the number one county nationwide in ornamental floriculture crops and in the state of California, ranks first in flower crops and nursery production. The San Diego County Flower & Plant Association works to pool growers‚ resources and present member-approved issues that demonstrate that the floriculture growers agenda is positive for the economy and environment of San Diego County. The Association also strives to communicate respect for urban development and residential concerns while furthering the cause of agriculture so that our members can continue to enjoy their profession in this region.

• The Association provides its members with many resources that encourage productivity and success.

• The publication of the annual Membership Directory and Buyers’ Guide is a wonderful marketing tool. While providing complete membership listings and product information, this valuable resource is distributed to our membership and wholesale trade buyers nationwide.

• Our established website, www.flowerandplant.org, links members with buyers around the world while promoting commerce and agriculture in Southern California.

• Informational and educational meetings keep members apprised of issues and concerns directly related to their operations, such as agricultural survival in urban areas, pesticide application, water runoff and conservation, labor relations and energy savings.

• Provides annual scholarships to local students interested in pursuing careers in horticulture and floriculture.

• Acts as a liaison to the University of California Cooperative Extension, San Diego County Farm Bureau, Department of Food and Agriculture and to other agricultural associations.

• Represented at state and local meetings to present our views on zoning, landscape, water and other agricultural issues that affect the growing industry.

• Strives to present and encourage a positive community image for the industry.

• The Bulletin Board is a FREE benefit for SDCF&PA members to post job opportunities, seasonal work needs, equipment needs for rent or sale, special promotions as well as other helpful information. Sent out on the 1st and 15th of each month.

Dear members and friends of the SDCF&PA, When I look back at 2022, I can safely say that it was a good year for our association! We got to celebrate our 75th anniversary as association. We were able to fully return to in-person events, where we celebrated several social gatherings and had a few educational events. The participation and enthusiasm that our members showed at these events speaks to the nature of our association: we are a place for networking and supporting each other in this wonderful industry that we all love so much.

I’m especially excited that 2022 brought a strong new board of directors with a couple of young industry professionals joining our board. Seeing new talent be equally as enthusiastic about our industry as us old-timers gives me great hope for the future of our association and industry. Plus, we got to welcome several companies as new members of the association, so we continue to go strong. As I’m writing this, there is some uncertainty about what 2023 may have in store for us. With high inflation and rising interest rates dominating the headlines, we have to prepare for consumers potentially cutting back on discretionary spending. That’s why we have to make our voices heard and make enough “noise” so that plants and flowers stay at the forefront of consumers’ minds. That’s why we have to support each other and keep a lively idea exchange going so that we can continue to grow as individual companies, as association, and as an industry. We already have a great lineup of events planned for the year, so there will be plenty of opportunities to network. I hope to see many of you there!

Cheers to a successful 2023 for our association, our industry, and each and every one of you! As always, I thank you for your support and welcome your ideas and suggestions on how we can make our association and our industry even stronger than they are, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Marilu Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Since 1975, the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association has annually presented scholarships to worthy students studying floriculture at an accredited college or university. Our goal is to encourage young people to plan a floriculture career in San Diego by awarding this scholarship to residents of California.

In honor of our dear departed friend and her many contributions in advancing the floriculture industry, the Association Board of Directors chose to dedicate this scholarship program in the memory of Marilu Johnson. In the twenty years that Marilu served as executive secretary of the Association, her efforts to promote the industry were tireless.

The 2022 Marilu John Scholarship recipients is:

René van Rems Scholarship Fund

In 2019 the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association added this scholarship to encourage young people to plan for a career in floral design.

Throughout his career of 40+ years, René has been an avid supporter of the floral industry on a regional, national and international level. Recognized as an expert in his field, he is known to be generous in volunteering his time and expertise for the benefit of the industry and for various non-profit organizations.

The 2022 René van Rems Scholarship recipients are:

• Kiara Benavides, majoring in agriculture science with an emphasis in ornamental horticulture at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA

• Carolina Cox, majoring in horticulture/floral design at Cuyamaca College, El Cajon, CA

San Diego County Flower & Plant Association Awards Scholarships to Horticulture Students

Scholarships are funded through donations by the SDCF&PA members and given out annually to undergraduate students in horticulture and related fields. In order to be eligible, applicants must be residents of California, show a commitment to floriculture/horticulture both as students and in their career goals, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients are selected by the association’s scholarship committee.
