Message from the Principal Thank you for taking the time to read this edition of the Irish Review. I trust this publication provides you with an awareness of what is currently happening at O’Dea High School and an appreciation of our continued dedication to advance O’Dea’s mission of educating young men grounded in the principles of character, faith, and service. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to be a member of such a unique and noteworthy school community. Not just as the only all-male Catholic college-preparatory high school in the Pacific Northwest, but in every aspect of our student’s experience. We continue to educate our students to be men of character and to celebrate our diversity in ways that enlighten and inform. Our faculty, staff, and coaches continue to build meaningful relationships with students that inspire a thirst for knowledge, a resolve to win with honor, and nourish their faith journey. An essential characteristic of the O’Dea experience continues to be the concept of Brotherhood. For nearly a century Brotherhood is formed in our classrooms, on our athletic fields, and throughout our campus ministry programs. It is truly a Brotherhood for Life. We accomplish a great good at O’Dea, but it is only possible with the support of those who share our values and hopes for the future. Thank you for your partnership in realizing our mission and for your faithful assistance to our students and school as we strive to pursue excellence in all endeavors. Go Irish!

The O’Dea Gymnasium Building on Tradition Thanks to our incredible O’Dea community, this past summer we were able to refurbish the O’Dea gymnasium. This is a special place where we come together to celebrate, compete, create community and pray. The gym is our largest gathering place and represents the tradition and history of O’Dea. It is a place where unparalleled bonds of brotherhood are formed and celebrated. With your support, the 2018 Fund-a-Need at the Celebrate O’Dea Auction raised an impressive $375,000, which enabled the renovation of the gym. Of the gifts given, 85 were of $2,500 or more which allowed the donors to dedicate their own bleacher seat along the south wall of the gym. Here is what your generosity helped us to accomplish:

New bleachers increase safety with aisles and railings. Their maroon color and wood base retain the traditional feel of the O’Dea gym, and the O’Dea emblems on the side of each row enhance the branding of the school. Individual seats in the front row are retractable for wheelchair accessibility and allow for folding chairs for the basketball teams.

Walls were repainted and light fixtures updated to brighten the gym. All banners were refurbished and cleaned.

The gym floor was sanded, repainted and sealed. New paint on the floor ensures our court is appropriately lined for basketball, enhances the overall look and feel of our gymnasium, and officially recognizes the court’s namesake Phil Lumpkin. Phil was a coach at O’Dea for 18 years and is honored and remembered for his love for and dedication to coaching basketball. A new floor cover protects the hardwood floor during PE classes, athletic practices, and events in the gym. New batting cages with hoists to the ceilings are safer and support the baseball team making it easier for them to access the cages throughout the year.

Thanks to the Simperman Corette Foundation, new AV equipment will be installed in the gym during the summer of 2019. The new equipment will help to support our school programming during assemblies and other student and community gatherings.

O’Dea’s Esteemed Wall of Honor The Athletic Wall of Honor recognizes the outstanding achievements of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and others who best exhibit the pursuit of excellence with integrity and have contributed to the proud athletic traditions of O’Dea High School. Inductees epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work during their time at O’Dea and beyond.

Congratulations to our 2018 Wall of Honor Inductees for receiving this esteemed honor. Kyle Benn, Class of 1997 When it came to football, Kyle was old school tough; a soft-spoken gentleman off the field but a little nasty on the field. Kyle is tough, loyal, smart, and an extremely intelligent football player. He was a member of O’Dea’s State Championship teams in both 1994 and 1995 and was named the Metro League MVP and Lineman of the Year in 1996. Coach Kohler said it best, “Kyle is a great competitor, a great student, a great football player, but an even better person.”

Mitch Johnson, Class of 2005 His teammates called him “The Dude” or “The Mistro”. Simply put, Coach Kohler said he is the best point guard and the best team player he has ever seen. Mitch is outgoing, loyal, unselfish and made everyone around him better. He was a 4-year starter at O’Dea, a member of the 2004 and 2005 State Championship teams and was a 4-time All-Metro and 2-time All-State player. Mitch was an extension of Hall of Fame Coach, Phil Lumpkin, on the court. Kohler said, “You knew Mitch was running the show.”

Linda Thornton Athletic Fund In 2018 O’Dea introduced the Linda Thornton Athletic Fund, created to ensure current O’Dea students with established financial need receive the monetary support necessary to participate fully in the O’Dea athletic program. For over 30 years Linda has generously and graciously used personal monies to help student-athletes attend sports camps and pay for other athletic needs when they could not otherwise afford to do so. This fund honors the countless ways Linda has made a positive impact on the lives of our student-athletes. She has been a remarkable example of selflessness and compassion to the entire O’Dea school community.

“The Linda Thornton Athletic fund is very symbolic for me. It means that no student athlete will fall thru the cracks due to events out of their control. It means that each student athlete will be surrounded with the right people and resources they need to succeed in the classroom and on the field of play. It means that they can face unique adverse circumstances with the confidence to know they have help behind them like Linda, who was behind me and so many other young men.”

Thank you to our event chairs, Rhonda and Mario Banchero. We are proud to announce we raised $120K for O’Dea Athletics.

- Eamon Sylvester ‘00

Taylor Mays, Class of 2006 Nobody worked harder than Taylor; he had a will to be great. He was an All-Metro and All-State football player, 2004 State track Champion in the 100m, 200m and 400m relay and was named a Washington State 2005 Parade All-American and Walter Payton, National Gatorade Player of the Year. Taylor is driven, hard-working, fun and simply a great person. He loved O’Dea and loved being a part of the program. Kohler said, “He is one of the best I have ever coached and I’m very proud to call him my friend.”

1997 Basketball Team The 1997 O’Dea Fighting Irish basketball team cemented their name in the history books with an undefeated record of 29-0 and winning the school’s second State Championship. The Irish were known for their smothering defense ranking #1 in the state of Washington for points allowed per game and #2 in points scored per game. USA Today recognized the Fighting Irish with a final ranking of #3 on the West Coast and #21 nationally.

Character. Faith. Service. ACTION Workshop Andrew Morrisey ‘19, Jack Irwin ‘19, Konrad Gerhardt ‘20 and Dublin House Dean, Mr. Will Chambers, attended the ACTION Student Leadership Workshop in St. Johns, Florida. O’Dea was joined by students and faculty from 14 Edmund Rice Christian Brother high schools throughout the United States and Canada. During this workshop, our students developed essential leadership skills, learned about the life and charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, and gained ideas and perspectives from their peers throughout North America. A major focus of the workshop was advocacy. Each school presented on one way in which they advocate for the poor and vulnerable in their society. The workshop was a great way for our students to realize they are part of a bigger network of Christian Brother schools who continue the work of Blessed Edmund Rice.

Global Youth Leadership Conference This past summer Noah Miles ‘20 attended the Global Youth Leadership Conference (GYLC) in Washington DC with an international group of students studying policy and legal solutions to many challenges facing our world including environmental, economic, and security issues. He then traveled to New York City to attend a global summit at the United Nations. This will be Noah’s third summer attending the conference, targeting programs that focus on his interests in neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

Impact! Safe Schools Conference O’Dea and Holy Names student leaders joined 100 other students from Seattle area high schools for the fifth annual Impact! Safe Schools Student Leadership Conference. The conference has students engage in a series of activities and discussions to deepen understandings of bias and the importance of having difficult conversations in the face of conflict. O’Dea students, David Sessoms ‘19, Max Samson ‘19, JT Rimorin ‘20, Thomas Endashaw ‘21, Alex Duong ‘20, and Andrew Varela ‘19 thoughtfully collaborated with other students, adult facilitators, and police officers regarding barriers and strategies to making our schools safer and more equitable.

Find Work! This was the rally cry of the 2018 Fighting Irish as they made history by becoming the first team in the 95-year history of the school to make a third straight trip to the Washington State Football Championship game. Led by head Coach, Monte Kohler, and seniors Alex Schmidt, Ruperake Fuavai, Mishael Powell, and Emonte Scott, the Irish conducted themselves with pride and poise, once again showing the entire state of Washington what a true football team looks like and re-established themselves as the top class act of the WIAA. Congratulations to Mark Tafia ‘19, Dustyn Camacho ‘20, Michael Ulugalu ‘19, Owen Prentice ‘21, Alexx Schmidt ‘19, Cyrus Hunter ‘19, Preston Helwege ‘19, and Emonte Scott ‘19 for being named to the 1st Team All-League on Offense. winter SPORTS basketball

swim & dive

Congratulations to the Irish Varsity Basketball team and head coach, Jason Kerr, on winning the 2019 AAA State Championship with an impressive 7039 victory over the #2 seed Mt. Spokane. The JV and Freshmen teams also had successful seasons, with the Freshmen going undefeated, as both teams continuing to develop at an impressive rate. Next season looks promising with a cast of strong leadership and talented returners. Congratulations to two of our seniors that will be playing at the college level. Noah Williams ’19 will be playing for the Washington State University and John Misel ’19 for the University of Puget Sound.

The 2018-19 Irish Swim & Dive season was hugely successful. The large team of 40 swimmers and divers worked hard each day, finishing 3rd in Metro and qualifying for 10 events at the State Meet. The Irish finished 4th in State and broke three school records: 200 Medley Relay 1:36.40 (Nathan Hayes ‘20, Aidan Schutte ‘22, Dominic Flack ‘19, Jack McGrath ‘21), and Nathan Hayes in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Back. Nathan also achieved All American Consideration for his 100 Back and placed 2nd at State. Well done Irish!

wrestling

The young Fighting Irish wrestlers finished another impressive season taking third in the Metro Dual meet season with a 13-2 record. Under head coach, Jeff Anderson, the grapplers went on to capture O’Dea’s 24th Metro Championship. Three O’Dea individual champions were crowned in the Metro Tournament: Sam Maher ‘19 @ 116 lbs., Misael Marin ‘19 @ 285 lbs. and Dustyn Camacho ‘20 @ 220 lbs. Other impressive contributors to the Metro title included Jack Pauly ‘19, Jake Porter ‘19, Wyatt Henry ‘20, Aodhan Roche ‘20, and Michael Aksdal ‘21. Due to snowy weather, the Regional Tournament was canceled and all 13 O’Dea wrestlers advanced to the State Tournament. The 32-man brackets made for a very long and challenging weekend, but the Irish prevailed and finished in 15th place with 3 medalists. Sam Maher captured 8th place and Misael Marin earned 4th place. At weight class 220 lbs, Dustyn Camacho became O’Dea wrestling’s first STATE CHAMPION with a pin of his opponent in the finals. The underclassmen gained valuable experience by competing in the State Tournament and are eagerly preparing for their chance to continue the legacy of excellence. Go Irish and Go Grapplers!

Congratulations to O’Dea’s very first individual State Champion, Dustyn Camacho ’19!

The Jerry Newman Scholarship Fund

On November 13, 2018, O’Dea held its first annual Scholarship Luncheon, bringing together both scholarship donors and scholarship recipients to celebrate those that so generously donate to support students in need of financial assistance at O’Dea High School. During the luncheon, Tom Newman ’89 spoke about his late father’s experience at O’Dea, which inspired his family to start the Jerry L. Newman Scholarship Fund. Although money was tight in the Newman household, attending a Catholic school was always important to the family. In 1947, brothers Jerry and Chuck Newman, were asked to leave a local Catholic high school after their freshman year due to their inability to pay tuition. “At the time it was a bitter pill to swallow. But life, and the God of life, have a funny way of dealing with things,” Jerry wrote about the incident long ago. Still desiring to attend a Catholic school, the brothers then enrolled at O’Dea High School for their sophomore year. The family’s money problems didn’t change while at O’Dea and in the middle of their junior year Jerry and Chuck were called to the Principal’s office. Tuition was $6 per month and the boys had not paid a dime. When the Principal asked what would happen if they had to leave O’Dea, Chuck said he would go to a public school and Jerry said he would quit school altogether. Thankfully, O’Dea had, and continues to have, a longstanding tradition of helping those in need and they were offered a deal. If they helped around the school instead of attending first period study hall, O’Dea would not only write off their unpaid tuition but charge them only half the tuition amount

for their senior year. They were given a lifeline and they took it. Jerry and Chuck graduated from O’Dea High School in 1950. Jerry was forever grateful to O’Dea for changing his life. He and his wife, Mary Lou Suva Newman (Holy Names Academy, ‘51), passed on a deep love and appreciation for O’Dea and the importance of a Catholic education to their family, which they carry to this day. Since 1950, eleven members of the extended Newman Family have graduated from O’Dea High School. The family continues to donate to the Jerry L. Newman Scholarship Fund so it will grow and further benefit current and future O’Dea students who need a helping hand. Tom has a lifelong connection to O’Dea not only as an alumni, but through his dad and the students he meets who receive financial support from his father’s scholarship endowment. He recognizes that O’Dea instills values in its students and creates bonds of brotherhood that last generations.

Scholarship Endowments O’Dea appreciates the Newman family and all the people who support scholarship funds to support our students in need. Scholarship endowments generate investment income that provides aid for our students in need of financial support. Aid is awarded when the fund principal reaches $25,000. Thank you to all those who have contributed to help make the following scholarship endowments a reality: Don and Ann Connolly Family Scholarship Rick Dodd Scholarship Fred Dore Scholarship Leo and Rita Heye Scholarship John R. Hiltenbrand Scholarship Charles J. McGlynn Scholarship McKenna Scholarship Cameron Mikami Scholarship Jerry L. Newman Scholarship Barbara Phillips Scholarship
