f you’ve ever found yourself suppressing a sob of exhaustion while pushing a bike up a gravel road causing the incredibly nice people around you to pause in their own efforts to make sure you’re okay, you might, like me, have entered a long-distance gravel race under-trained.

If only my buddy Tom Fullmer and his gang at the Waldport Chamber of Commerce had already started to throw the afterparty for the Gravel Epic races, an event that has grown to into Beach, Bike and Blues Festival. Not just for racers, the event makes the charming village come alive with music, food and more. And based on the few times I attended, some very cute dogs. See page 11 for details. And speaking of cute, this weekend will also have a screening of another Art Smart movie at Lincoln City’s Bijou Theatre. Krista Eddy and her Art Smart kids come up with a new story every year that they explore with different ways to create art, which is then chronicled in a movie that runs about a half hour or so. See page 8 for the full story. Viewing previous years films was another time I had to suppress tears.

Loyalty and royalty

From icy water plunges to princesses, Newport’s Loyalty Days celebration has it all

Started in response to a proclamation signed by President Eisenhower in 1958, Loyalty Days events began popping up around the country.

Now in its 67th year, the Newport event continues to salute veterans while also honoring and remembering members of the local fishing industry.

This year’s Loyalty Days and Sea Fair Festival, running from Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 5, officially begins with a coronation pageant for the Newport Loyalty Days Princesses on Friday evening at the Newport Performing Arts Center, with entertainment and speeches by the three Princesses: Julie Hernandez, Rylee Black and Amanda Aubert.

The theme of “United in Freedom” will be the focus of the presentations. This will be followed by the reading of the names of Lincoln County veterans at the Newport Armory.

Earlier in the day, veterans of all ages are invited to the annual Loyalty Days Veterans Lunch at the Newport 60+ Activity Center. Volunteers from the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office will be on hand to provide information to veterans and we will be joined by the Loyalty Days princesses.

Restaurant & Bakery at NE 20th Street to the finish at Mckay’s Market on Olive Street.

For more than 40 years, this fun community run has been a highlight of the parade, but this year the tradition continues with a twist — the free Community Mile is open to all ages and abilities, but for those who crave a little competition, there is now a new Competitive Mile.

The parade starts just after the runners have cleared the route. “It’s going to be a big one this year,” organizer Mary Buck said. “We have 63 entries in the parade.” The parade starts with this year’s Grand Marshall Lyle Mattson being accompanied by the Governor’s Mounted Honor Guard and the Color Guard from Yaquina Bay Coast Guard.

The Newport Loyalty Days Princesses will participate in the parade. And keep your eyes on the sky for the flyover by the Air National Guard.

Following the parade will be open houses at the American Legion Hall and at the Newport Armory.

WHAT: Central Coast Community Dance Party

WHEN: 7 pm, Saturday, May 4

WHERE: Yachats Commons, 441 Hwy. 101 N.

COST: Free CALL: 541-961-3047

The party’s sober, in Yachats

When Lisha Rose and her band hosted an alcoholand drug-free community dance last December at the Yachats Commons it was an attempt to address a concern that comes up frequently among local musicians.

Lisha is an iconic local vocalist who has been featured with many bands over the years. Her latest group, Lisha & the Outlaws, is a classic rock dance band that has become well known for its ability to create a lively party atmosphere anywhere it plays. But, like most local bands and musicians, the great majority of those gigs are in venues that serve alcohol. Although the restaurants, bars, and taverns that actively support local live music on the Central Oregon Coast are well run (and vital to the survival of local music on the coast), they don’t meet everyone’s needs.

Lisha and her band manager Cheri Capron said they were hearing frequently from fans who felt left out of the vibrant local music scene in Lincoln County. They ranged from young singles looking for opportunities to meet people and dance in an alcohol-free environment, to people in recovery from substance-use disorders, to older folks who said they felt

uncomfortable around people who are drinking, to couples who just wanted affordable opportunities to enjoy live music with the kids and the whole family.

Free, all-ages local community dances and concerts (and even theatrical productions) were common in Lincoln County as recently as 10 years ago, but they have largely disappeared as taxpayer-funded facilities in every community have imposed rental fees on these public venues that have made it nearly impossible for local groups and individuals to put on free events.

The December event, billed as a Sober Dance Party, drew more than a hundred people of all ages, but it would not have been possible without the cooperation of the City of Yachats which set aside its usual rental fees for the Commons’ multipurpose room.

Lisha and Cheri said before the December dance that they hoped it would set a precedent for similar events throughout the county and, at least in Yachats, that is now happening in the form of a just-announced follow up series of drugand alcohol-free, all-ages community dances at the Yachats Commons.

The 2024 Central Coast Community Dance Party will feature four free, all-ages dances with live music by a variety of local dance bands, beginning with Lisha & the Outlaws this

Saturday, May 4, from 7 to 10 pm

The City of Yachats has agreed to supply the venue and a special tip bucket for the City will be set up prominently for contributions to its clean-up costs, etc. There will be free coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages contributed by local businesses.

The whole thing is organized by local volunteers, sponsored by local businesses, and supported by the City of Yachats to create an open and safe place to be social with an upbeat flavor. Now that sounds like the Yachats I remember being irresistibly compelled to move to when I first came to the Oregon Coast 50 years ago!

The Yachats Commons is located at 441 Hwy. 101 N. in the center of Yachats. For more information, contact Cheri Capron at 541-961-3047.

Chandler Davis is a former newspaper and magazine journalist, a retired addiction and mental health counselor, and a prominent local musician in Lincoln County.

To learn how you can influence other Lincoln County and Central Coast public entities to help facilitate live entertainment events for the whole community, contact me via Facebook Messenger or at chandler@chandlerdavis.com.

You’ll lava a great time at this movie

The Bijou Theatre in Lincoln City shows films that range from small indie flicks to major blockbusters. And most years, they also quietly host a locally made, feel-good film about a class of kids guided by their art teacher on a journey of the imagination.

This Saturday, May 4, go on “The Volcano Adventure.” The movie stars the students of the 10-week long Art Smart classes at the Artists’ Studio Association, led by Krista Eddy.

It tells the story of a volcano that creates a new island off the coast of Lincoln City. In the aftermath, a

fisherman gets lost on the island and these art students band together and go to the island to rescue him — finding much more than expected along the way.

The kids will tell the story and show off their artwork, which ranges from pastel drawings to watercolor paintings to stop-gap animation. Tickets are free to all Art Smart Students and their siblings but adults are encouraged to donate $10, which will all go back into the program.

The movie starts at 11 am and has a run time of roughly 30 minutes. The Bijou Theatre is located at 1624 NE Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City. For more information, call 541992-4292.

Manzanita hosts triple art show

The May show at Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts features collage by Lindsey Aarts, paintings by Mathew Goodrich and woven sculptures by Rose Covert.

The show will run through May 25, with an artists’ reception held from 3 to 5 pm this Saturday, May 4, during which the artists will speak about their work and answer questions.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the coast, Aarts moved with her family to Astoria in 2017. At that time she also stepped away from her work as a freelance graphic designer to pursue painting and illustration. Her show, “Looming,” incorporates her typical focus on the natural landscape of the Oregon Coast but subtly draws attention to the quiet unease that exists for those living in a place that lies at the feet of nature’s power. Using cut and torn paper, watercolor and colored pencil, Aarts plays with perspective, line and color to hint at the ever-present forces behind Oregon’s iconic coastal landscape.

A lifelong builder, designer and abstract painter, Goodrich is now anchored to the coast where he dedicates himself to painting the Western landscapes he enjoys. After he suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2016, landscape paintings became an opportunity

for Goodrich to build a sense of emotional and visual memory he no longer possessed. The paintings in this show are a record of the wild places he visits throughout the North Coast and beyond. Landscape painting affords Goodrich a subject that suits his longstanding affinity for intense color palettes and vibrant hues, while still creating a sense of space and atmosphere and remaining in the abstract.

Covert creates visual storytelling; a woven landscape. Her work emanates from a profound connection to the materials she works with as she grows, tends, harvests and processes her materials. Her woven sculptures create a language that translates these elemental bodies into forms that evoke a sense of the living world from which they are created. Covert’s work, “Elemental Bodies,” is rooted in the exploration of weaving forms that elicit the feelings one experiences when they are outside experiencing the complex fiber of the physical world.

The Hoffman Gallery is located at 594 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita and is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 pm. For more information, go to hoffmanarts. org or call 503-368-3846.

Beach, Bike and Blues brings the party to Waldport

There’s live music, food and drink, local artisans and their wares, and about as scenic a beachfront setting as you can imagine, all coming together at Waldport’s Beach, Bike and Blues Festival this Saturday, May 4.

The vibrant festival will take place at the Alsea Bay Bridge Center and Museum at the south end of the Alsea Bay Bridge.

“This is a great festival,” said Waldport Mayor Greg Holland, adding that the party begins just as the Oregon Coast Gravel Epic bike races concludes. “There’s lots of blues, food, beer, local merchants and artisans.”

The festival, in its third year, “is a pretty big thing now,” Holland said.

The 12th annual gravel cycling race showcases the Siuslaw National Forest and starts at the Waldport Community Center at 9 am. It includes a 60-mile Abomination and 37-mile Son of Abomination routes. The event is part of the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association State Championships in Gravel.

The race brings hundreds of people to Waldport, and Holland said the community realized the city was not doing anything to give the racers a reason to stay in town. Volunteers set to work in early 2022 to put together a music festival with a ready-made audience, and the Beach, Bike and Blues festival was born. Keeping true to its origins, the festival focuses on music, with performances that run from noon to 7 pm in downtown Waldport.

In addition to six hours of live blues there will be food from local chefs and craft beer from Beachcrest Brewing Company. There are plenty of food choices available throughout the afternoon, ranging from fish and chips to giant hot dogs and barbecue ribs.

A Beachcomber Days Kids’ Area, with games and activities, will be run by volunteers who will also have information about the annual Beachcomber Days celebration in Waldport, happening this year on June 15 and 16.

Tom Fullmer, executive director of the Waldport Chamber of Commerce, said the event attracted 700 or 800 people in its first year. That led to a bigger tent in the second year; last year brought in almost 2,000 people.

“So, we expanded the tent size again for this year and we’re projecting 2,500 people,” he said. ”We have people coming from all over — Portland, the Willamette Valley and even Seattle. We offer great music and great food. The Cascade Blues Association of Portland helps bring in a lot of people.”

He emphasized that the festival is appropriate for all ages, is ADAaccessible and dog-friendly. The entire museum building is used, along with all of the rear parking lot and grassy area. And beach access is available from the parking lot steps.

The Waldport chamber presents the festival with its sponsors as a community event to support local businesses. Among its 50 volunteers is a team of students from Angell Job Corps in Yachats, who are instrumental in helping set up the event. Pioneer Connect is the presenting sponsor.

This year’s festival includes five food vendors and about 25 other vendors. The music pavilion will be double the size it was

last year, with plenty of room for dancing.

“It’s a real community celebration,” Fullmer said. “It creates a lot of esprit de corps “ And the feedback is positive.

Music

schedule

12:15 pm – Paul Schuytema, old-time blues

2 pm – Purple Cats tribute with Steve Cook, Curtis Colt, Ethan Bear and Neil Stauphenbeil

3:30 pm – Ronnie Jay Pirrello, blues, rock and folk

5 pm – Sonny Hess, Lisa Mann and Kelly Pierce, Cascade Blues Muddy Award-winning trio

“Everyone loves the venue,” he said. “We’ve heard from one of the musicians that it’s the best venue they’ve ever played.” Fullmer points out that the event has countywide participation — the fish and chips food truck is from Fishing Rock Eatery in Depoe Bay, and festival visitors can shop for locally roasted coffee from The Thirsty Fisherman in Toledo. Beachcrest Brewing Company is located in Gleneden Beach. Other food vendors are Grocery Outlet with wine, hard seltzer and non-alcoholic beer; tritip sandwiches, barbecue ribs and giant hot dogs from Ray’s Market; Pepsi products and bottled water from Bigfoot Beverages; sweet treats from Chubby Lil’ Mermaid in Seal Rock; and ice cream sandwiches from JillyBeanz Ice Cream in Waldport.

“The festival is really music-oriented but we have cold beer and good food and a beautiful beach,” Fullmer said. “It brings lots of people into Waldport and our scenic beachfront setting. And we’re always excited to show off our town.” Beach, Bike and Blues runs from noon to 7 pm this Saturday, May 4, in downtown Waldport. For more information, go to beachcomberdays.com.

Coastal Voices offers concert choices

Coastal Voices, the community choir of the Central Oregon Coast, will conclude its current season of music with a series of concerts titled “Spring Homage.”

Kicking off at the Newport Performing Arts Center this Saturday, May 4, the concerts will continue on Sunday, May 5, at the Yachats Community Presbyterian Church; Saturday, May 11, at the Chapel By The Sea in Lincoln City; and Sunday, May 12, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.

The concert series marks 25 years of performances by the 50-member choir, formerly known as the Central Coast Chorale.

Artistic Director Rhodd Caldwell has chosen favorite pieces from the large library of choral music amassed by Dr. Mary Lee Scoville during her tenure as director of Central Coast Chorale from 1998 to 2020.

“Mary Lee Scoville laid the foundation upon which we are building [Coastal Voices] into a sustainable and inclusive organization that celebrates, promotes and develops the choral arts,” Caldwell said.

The concert program glorifies many aspects of spring. Part 1: Sacred Treasures, includes an American spiritual and a Swahili version of the Lord’s Prayer, along with other liturgical works. In Part 2: Natural Wonders, the choir will perform a varied mix of secular music, such as “Turn the World Around”

by Harry Belafonte and “Skyfall” by Adele. SoundWaves, the small ensemble drawn from the choir, will perform three pieces, including “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon.

“We want our listeners to celebrate with us the hope and renewal of another spring season,” Caldwell said.

Continuing the tradition begun at their first post-pandemic concert in July 2022, Caldwell and the choir will lead the audience in a short sing-along following the intermission.

“I want to make Lincoln County the county that sings,” Caldwell said.

Baskets filled with items related to specific selections on the program will be raffled off during the event.

The Saturday concert at the Newport Performing Arts Center will include a brief ceremony honoring Dr. Scoville for her great contributions to the musical arts on the Central Oregon Coast. As a choir director, community college teacher, private music instructor and church organist, Scoville has brought music into the lives of countless coastal residents of all ages.

All concerts begin at 4 pm. Tickets are $25 for the performance at the Newport Performing Arts Center and $20 for all other concerts. Kids aged 17 and younger get in free.

For more information and tickets, go to coastal-voices.org or call 541-283-6295.

Svendsen has won numerous awards for his landscape and wildlife photography in Northwest regional competitions, and currently has a show on display in the Newport Performing Arts Center of portraits taken in Afghanistan in the 1970s. He has been taking pictures his entire adult life, but credits membership in the Newport-based Yaquina Arts Association Photographers photo club with sharply expanding and deepening his store of photographic and creative skills.

In addition to coastal depictions, the show will feature images of wildlife from the Everglades and Yellowstone ecosystems and highlights images of three Native American dancers from the 2023 Siletz Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow.

Marsh has been creating art for several years and has been enjoying the free watercolor classes offered by the association. This will be her first show in the gallery.

The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive and is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm.

Pooling off something special

Newport Parks and Recreation is bringing back its wildly popular beach excursions this spring with five available classes. Two will focus more on tidepool animals and three will focus more on edible seaweeds.

The Tidepool Excursions take place on Thursday, May 9, at Otter Crest and Friday, May 10, at Neptune State Park. The edible seaweeds class, called Low Tide Learning, will take place at Seal Rock State Park on May 28, June 8 and June 24.

“The tides dictate the dates,” Recreation Program Specialist Jenni Remillard said. “We

chose the dates based on the best tides with the best times.”

Spring time sees negative tides when areas that are not normally exposed are accessible, allowing for better exploring.

“The Seal Rock site has a fantastic variety of seaweed so it’s perfect for learning what types you can find along our coast,” Remillard said. “We have a lot of edible varieties here.”

Registration is required as spaces are limited.
