Can you share some strength in supply chain of your industry?
Mr. Md. Hussain, Logistics Manager, TATA Steel Jamshedpur.
Well, I would like share some of our best strengths i.e. the supply chain is very rapid and aggressive as they are enabled and equipped with latest technology of supply chain hardware and software which make them more efficient. The distributor’s retailers and end consumer are happy as they get their orders within 24 hours.
Mr Md. Hussain, an accomplished logistics and supply chain management (SCM) professional has over 35 years in the field of supply chain and logistics. He has handled numerous projects in the steel and power sectors. His responses to an open interview: Why logistics and SCM is necessary for any steel or power industry? As defined by many experts logistics is so called the provision of product and services of different test and role in desired time, amount and place. Failure of anyone of the above may cause a major failure in the entire system of production and supply chain. Hence it provides a constant flow of materials, replacement etc. thus allowing the end products to reach the consumer from the production house. Therefore for the best control of flow of materials, process and inventory management, logistics and supply chain management is necessary. What major factors do you consider to cause delays in supply chains in India? There are a few major factors that may cause delays in supply chain in the Indian context. Like: 1. At the order generation point there are possibilities of a system failure or the software crashing. 2. At loading point there are possibilities of a failure in overhead cranes or hoists that are used for product or material displacement. 3. At vehicle loading point the vehicles have to stand in a queue only to move forward when the vehicle in the front moves. 4. Lastly, Security check points – still done manually in many industries and lacks automation and the technological factor.
We have got our own security system which tracks order displacement. Under any condition of system failure the order is taken up by the company sales team or in person. The logistics department regularly checks the license and other required documents of the vehicle, thus creating faith among the people. Can you give some suggestion to reduce/stop delays in supply chain? Regular maintenance of all hardware and software vehicles and systems should be done. Situation of stock-out must be avoided because in that condition the vehicle has to line up at the new loading point which takes unnecessary time and create delays. Implementation of Vehicle Tracking System. Trailers must be made to run during off-peak times for smooth transport systems. What will be the future of supply chain in coming years? I am not sure of the definitive vision of what-and-how supply chain would be in future but however to well articulate that the future supply chain is inextricably. And depending on the various factors I think the future supply chain would be well instrumented with hi-tech devices, globally interconnected and intelligent with smart systems. -

Transportation in Project Cargo Project Cargo are items sourced globally, consolidated, and transported normally with an over-dimensional component. Project Cargo consist of many shipments, one shipment, or even one piece; cover a wide variety of freight volumes and freight spends (and may exceed over $100 million); move from/to anywhere in the world by land, sea, or air – and may take over several months ; and involve trucks, rail, cranes, ships, barges, and/or planes. The key transportation considerations 1. Complexity of the cargo 2. Maximum possible shipping envelope (maximum weight and dimensions for each piece of cargo) 3. Client delivery obligations 4. Worldwide material origins 5. Complexity of EXIM regulations 6. Blends of liner and charter services Companies that understand complexities of shipping project cargo and take transportation best practices into account in their planning and throughout the project are most likely to avoid common pitfalls and maintain project profitability. Some best practices: • Seek transportation advice before moving over-dimensional or heavy-lift cargo • When pre-planning, allow sufficient lead time to coordinate transportation details • Develop contingency plans • Incorporate past experience for a most cost effective, efficient way to move specific commodities around the world. -

In 2011 Yakult Danone India (P) Ltd., received the ‘Emerging Company of the Year’ award from Frost & Sullivan. This award signifies the company's identification of solutions with long-term sustainability and at the same time also presenting an incredible market potential. Also with no competitors in India, Yakult is still not popular. Lack of awareness among people has not allowed the full utilization of its capacities set up at the Rai plant. The weaknesses are more or less associated with the marketing that needs to be reconstructed. To enhance Yakult’s popularity in the Indian market the following is suggestions: Advertisements - Ads need to be appealing enough to capture the attention of consumer; also to make its presence felt in the market advertise at prime times and on major channels. Packaging - People prefer single bottle units before buying the whole pack of 5 bottles. Taste - Availability in different flavours to increase demand and acceptance.

Yakult a probiotic dairy drink, was launched in 2007 and has its sole ISO 9001:2008, HACCP and OHSAS 18001:2007 certified manufacturing facilities at Rai, Haryana. The product - a pack of five 65 ml bottles is priced at INR Fifty all over in India. Sold over 30 countries and regardless of production location, the bacteria cultures are provided from a mother strain (Bacterium Lactobacillus - casei Shirota) from Japan. Lactobacilli are also used in beverages, cosmetics and more recently in developing the chemotherapy drug irinotecan.

Club Activities Octaphi Operation Management Club of Jindal Global Business School organized a National Level Poster Design Contest – “PRAKRUTHI” on the theme of “Waste Management System” dated on 14th September 2013. 40 top B-schools of India participated in this contest. The winners were awarded with cash prize of Rs. 2000 as 1st Prize and Rs. 1000 as 2nd Prize along with a certificate of appreciation.
Variety of products - Like probiotic ice-creams, probiotic jellies, etc. Shelf life - Add preservative to increase the shelf life of product over 40 days; also, rather supply in plastic bottles only increase storage time by making it available in Tetra Packs. Availability and visibility - Increase presence in supermarkets and even at ice-cream booths More awareness programs - Increase awareness on the advantages of consuming probiotics at camps, campaigns, presentation, etc. More production units - Transporting to various locations in India from one production facility reduces the consumption time for final consumer.
