As is true for many parents, this woman fears what will happen when her children transition out of school-age services. Her story represents the silent crisis experienced by families and individuals living with autism.

1. Social Skills Training

Individuals with autism need to understand social cues, listen to others and build relationships in order to thrive. Furthermore, they must learn how to take turns taking questions or responding to humor appropriately.

Studies indicate that group programs like PEERS offered at Easterseals day programs can assist individuals in creating greater connections and social engagement, such as increased conversation frequency. PEERS encourages participants to talk more frequently as well as focus on the positive aspects of interactions; furthermore it addresses other problems like assertiveness and empathy.

This program emphasizes daily living skills development, such as shopping and banking independently or altering grooming routines. Participants gain new interests while discovering hobbies and communities through various activities; funding may come from school districts, the Department of Developmental Services or MassHealth.

2 Employment

Easterseals offers various support options to assist adults with autism who want to find work either paid or volunteer, including coaching on job search skills and resources for finding employment independently

At AHRC NYC Day Habilitation programs are tailored to meet the individual's wants and needs. An individualized schedule features community experiences derived from their Person Centered Plan; one person might spend the day shopping or exploring with support staff while another could participate in vocational training at a local business.

3 Respite Care

Many families require respite care on an occasional basis, whether through friends and family watching your loved one, an adult day program, or residential facility

Be sure to discuss and visit potential respite care options with your loved one, so they can become used to the idea of someone taking over some of their daily activities. Also inquire about costs; long-term care insurance policies or Medicare may cover some respite care services.

Easterseals offers day programs for people with autism of various degrees of independence and ability. Our programs focus on building skills to enable productive lives within communities - read more here about them!

4. Health Care

Many individuals with autism require employment and health care access in order to live independent lives. At YAI, adult day programs combine health services and wellness activities into recreational programming such as recreation, training and volunteering activities - enabling YAI participants to find jobs at local restaurants, retail businesses or physicians' offices.

YAI's "Without Walls" program offers community-based experiences and goals driven by each person's Person-Centered Plan to assist autistic adults find meaning and purpose in life.

Some families can afford personal care by finding part-time work and using family reimbursement funds; however, doing too much could cause benefits to be lost; therefore family reimbursement funds should only be considered as a last resort.

5. Friendships

Early and middle childhood friendships tend to involve only same-sex peers, while most adolescents eventually form some other-sex friendships that serve similar functions but may also give the individual opportunities to understand opposite-sex behavior and develop greater familiarity
