ennice Lovelace and her 8-year-old daughter received an outpouring of support from her church family, Voices of Faith Ministries, after the congregation learned that rats had destroyed all of her furniture at People Self Storage on Salem Road in Covington. Lovelace put her furniture in storage for six month after losing her home when her hours were cut at UPS, where she worked. When she got back on her feet, she found that her furniture was ruined while in storage. Three days before Christmas, congregation members at the church’s Stone Mountain and Conyers campuses showered Lovelace with an abundance of donations and offers to help her set up her two-bedroom apartment. A long line formed during all three of the church’s worship services. “This is a woman who has been very faithful. She never stop coming to church and praising the Lord, in spite of all that she was going through. She

DeKalb County Grand Jury has indicted 24 men for allegedly soliciting minors for sex in connection with a multi-jurisdictional undercover operation that took place in early 2019. The suspects charged in the “Operation Interception” sting range in age from 20 to 55 time of the crime. The men were charged with at least one count of Utilizing an Electronic Device to Seduce, Solicit, or Entice a Child, in separate indictments returned by Grand Jurors this month. Other charges included Human Trafficking, Criminal Attempt to Commit Aggravated Child Molestation, and Obscene Internet Contact with a Child. The charges against the defendants stem from a five-day undercover operation based in Brookhaven beginning January 30, 2019 through Super Bowl weekend in Atlanta. According to the investigation, the men contacted decoys online, believing they were 14-year-old children, and either engaged in sexually explicit conversations with them and/or distributed obscene photographs to them. Many traveled to Brookhaven with the intent of meeting a child for sex. They were instead arrested by undercover agents after arriving at the designated meeting location. The operation was coordinated by the GBI’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force in partnership with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Brookhaven Police Department. Following indictment, the defendants will be scheduled for arraignment and later, trial. The cases are being prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Sexual Exploitation and Crimes Against Children (SECAC) Unit, which conducted an extensive preindictment investigation. The list of the defendants and the charges on which they were indicted are outlined as follows:

DeKalb CEO Thurmond proposes cost-of-living increase for county retirees For the second consecutive year, DeKalb County retirees and beneficiaries could receive a two-percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). “After 14 years with no cost of living increases for DeKalb County retirees, we commend the CEO and the Board of Commissioners for recognizing this problem,” said Janice Henck, vice president of the DeKalb County Retired Employees Association. “We appreciate the CEO Michael Thurmond funds being included for the second year in a row in the proposed 2020 budget.” Approximately 11,000 retirees and beneficiaries would benefit from the increase, which is included in DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond’s proposed fiscal year 2020 budget submitted to the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 13. The annualized cost of the adjustment will be $2.1 million, if commissioners approve the increase, which would become effective on July 1, 2020. Before receiving a two percent increase in July 2019, retirees had not received a COLA in 14 years. “We are able to propose this much-needed increase because the county has made prudent financial decisions for the past three budget cycles,” Thurmond said. The budget will be voted on by the Board of Commissioners no later than Feb. 28, 2020.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Local chess master Orrin C. Hudson gives the gift of learning at holiday chess workshop By Mackenzie N. Morgan Staff Writer

State Rep. Vernon Jones sponsors bike drive for needy kids State Rep. Vernon Jones, District 91, remembers how tough life can be as a farmer and he’s motivated to spread goodwill, especially toward kids, this time of year. “My parents were farmers. Sometimes, we didn’t get anything for Christmas, if the crops didn’t do well,” Jones said. “Everybody else would have new bikes and we would have to ride theirs. We would have to have Christmas at another time.” This year, Jones received donations of about 40 bikes that he provided to DeKalb County’s Child Advocacy Center, which sponsors a program called “Hope for the Holidays” to assist children who are no longer in foster care. Jones said he began supporting the program several years ago when he was DeKalb County’s CEO. “I just continue to do it because I like to see children happy, especially during Christmas,” Jones said. Jones said he thanks the community for its support in heeding his call for bicycles(he used FB to reach out) and he thanked partner, Atlanta Pro Bikes, which assembled the bicycles, checking the air pressure, tires and brakes at no charge. “They (Atlanta Pro Bikes) were awesome. We couldn’t have done it without all of those who were generous enough to provide the bikes,” Jones said. “ I know those bikes made a lot of kids happy on Christmas Day.”

It is truly a blessing to be a blessing and to share the true meaning of Christmas,” the organization said in a statement. The group has held dancing events to also help raise funds for people with dementia, DeKalb County Senior Olympics and the Redan Recreation Booster Club for children and adult mentoring programs. TREE continued from page 1 raising him alone, encouraging him as he pursued his college degree and professional and political careers. The Diana M. Johnson award, along with $200, went to Alexis Newton, a single mother from Augusta who is raising eight sons alone. Johnson said Mothers Offering Resources to Everyone (M.O.R.E.), a mentoring program he has supported for years, recommended Newton for the award. This year marked the second year for the award. Johnson praised Newton as a hard worker and devoted mother in saluting her. “She completed her GED in 2010. She earned her college degree… She works full time. All of her boys play sports. They are very active. She’s part of the PTA in all of their schools. It’s been hard but not impossible. She is the picture of hard work and determination,” Johnson told the audience. Newton said she was grateful to be honored and offered words of encouragement to other parents who may be struggling financially or with drug or alcohol addiction. “I just want to thank God. I come from nothing… It can be done,” said Newton.

Lovelace told CBS46 when she reported to storage management that her furniture had been destroyed, she ran into a dead end. “I advised him that my storage unit was full of rat feces and urine, and he stated they have had a rat problem, and they had Orkin out for more than five years, and they were aware of the situation,” Lovelace told CBS46. Lovelace said the manager said, however, since she did not include insurance coverage on her contract, there wasn’t anything they could do about her furniture. Bishop Hawkins said God is bigger.
