Canine Companions

Established as a guild in 1992, and a chapter in 2000, Assistance League North Coast® (ALNC) is the 105th chapter of the National Assistance League®. They consist of approximately 182 local volunteers who give over 27,000 hours of service each year. Their philanthropic projects are made possible by donations, grants, their thrift shop proceeds and fundraising events each year. ALNC’s members work on various committees and programs of their choice, as well as through appointed or elected offices that they hold.

The National Assistance League® was the first nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization founded in the West which recognizes the potential of volunteers helping those less fortunate to a better and more meaningful life. Chapters are autonomous tax exempt, charitable corporations, whose Philanthropic Programs are actively controlled and administered by chapter members to serve the specific needs of the local community.

The mission of the Assistance League North Coast® is dedicated to serving the needs, primarily of children, in the communities of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista, with the goal of providing a positive starting point for academic success. Their vision is to be the premiere philanthropic organization in Coastal North County San Diego, connecting with children in need.

Canine Companions is leading the service dog industry so their clients and their dogs can live with greater independence. The organization provides service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities and facility dogs to professionals working in healthcare, criminal justice and educational settings. Since their founding in 1975, our dogs and all follow-up services are provided at no cost to our clients.

Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way. Disability reaches all races, classes and backgrounds, and Canine Companions will too. Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training staff and the desire to lead life with greater independence. Canine Companions is committed to providing services to all qualified clients.

Canine Companions services adults with physical or auditory disabilities, children with physical or cognitive disabilities aged five or older or adults with physical or cognitive disabilities who require the assistance of a facilitator such as a parent, caregiver or spouse, veterans with a physical or auditory disability or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or an educational setting.

Canine Companions is focused on managing the intersectionality of all communities they can and do serve with their mission – leaving no one out who can benefit from our services or membership in our community.

NORTH COUNTY AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

North County African American Women’s Association emerged on the scene with a clear mission as a result of state funding requiring a mentoring group of professional women organized to sponsor a conference for young girls and single/displaced homemakers looking to re-enter the workforce. These funds came through the Oceanside Unified School District in response to the California Department of Education, Carl Perkins Vocational and Occupational Act: Gender Equity Grant Program. Eleven women in the fall of 1995, the majority of whom were educators, took on the charge to provide support for the young and adult women after the conference by holding monthly meetings and developing a fundraising arm to become self-sustaining at the end of the two-year program. Today, the North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA) mission has developed to become a support network that empowers young and adult women through educational advancement, health awareness and improvement in life skills.

For the past 26 years, North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA) has provided scholarships, support, and mentorship opportunities to women and girls throughout North County San Diego to increase their self-sufficiency. Their mentoring programs are designed to facilitate leadership through their High school program (Global Ambassadors) and life skills support through their middle school mentorship program (Becoming a Global Citizen). NCAAWA’s Scholarship Fundraiser (Gentlemen’s Gourmet), which is a yearly highlight in Oceanside, has given the organization the ability to award deserving ladies with scholarships. Year to date NCAAWA has awarded over $450,000 in scholarships.
