OCEAN GROVE’S NUMBER ONE NEWSPAPER

FREE FORTNIGHTLY

Open for business OCEAN Grove's all new Neighbourhood Centre was offially opened on Sunday and big crowds of locals turned out to have a look at the grand new facilities. It's been nigh on 17 years of hardwork by the team that leads the way in Neighbourhood Houses. The centre in John Dory Drive, nominally called a community hub, replaces the old centre in the Parade. Centre users had outgrown those premises, and an idea to go up a storey was ditched for a more accessible venue with much needed parking facilities. More pictures page 11. PICTURED LEFT. CROSSING RELIEF A NOTORIOUS Grove junction is finally getting traffic lights eight years after it was deemed a priority by locals. President of the Ocean Grove Community Association (OGCA), Michael Harbour, welcomed funding for lights at the Marlin Drive and Tuckfield Street junction in this year’s

State Budget. “This will be a great traffic measure for this intersection, which will assist children in crossing,” said Mr Harbour. “The OGCA thanks Lisa Neville for bringing her election commitment to fruition.” The $1 million funding for the lights is part of $1.8 million allocated

for road safety issues in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. The OGCA identified the intersection as high priority at a traffic forum in July 2007 and have been campaigning for traffic lights since. The organisation also campaigned for the traffic lights during last year’s election, and Mrs Neville

pledged to have them installed in her first term. “There have been a number of minor accidents there over the last few years – although fortunately no serious ones,” said Mr Harbour. “With the construction of Shell Road Pavilion, that intersection will become busier, particularly with people wanting to cross

Tuckfield Street to access the stadium.” Mr Harbour said VicRoads will hold a community information session in late July or early August, to present its design proposal.

Note for the kids diary

Jelly Bean Drama a hit A SMALL but enthusiastic bunch of children enjoyed Jelly Bean Drama with much running about and screams of delight last Friday. The children and their parents joined Rachel Smith at the new Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre for educational drama program. Rachel has run the program since the start of the year but this was the first time it was held at

the new location. “It’s just great getting kids to use their imagination and learn,” she said. Rachel ran a similar class in Ireland before moving to Australia September last year. The class is open to ages three to five. For more information check out the What’s On section on page 18.

Urban framework and intersections set to benefit from city budget

THIS week is Macular Degeneration Week and Ocean Grove optometrist Greg Sly is encouraging locals book in a get checked. According to research, one in four people over 50 are still not heeding the call to action and getting their eyes checked. Macular degeneration is Australia’s leading cause of severe vision loss and blindness, affecting more than 1.15 million Australians over 50. Sight can be saved if signs of the disease are identified and treated early enough. Although optometrists routinely test for the condition the week May 24-30 is to try and encourage the over 50s to get checked in case. For more information contact Greg Sly Optometry on 5256 1295.

Prostate support

APRIL 2013: Locals took part in an extensive two day consultation on an urban design for Ocean Grove. This continued last year. The recent city budget allocated funding towards some of the work. GEELONG Council will fund two new projects for Ocean Grove this year according to its recent Proposed Budget. Council allocated funding for the Principal Pedestrian Network and the Town Centre Masterplan intersection works. “We did an urban design framework last year

and there was extensive consultation with the community,” said Beangala Ward Councillor Jan Farrell. “I’m pleased that the recommendations from it are taking shape.” The Proposed Budget also outlines funding for the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre gym

expansion and $1.25 million to complete Shell Road Reserve Pavilion. Cr Farrell expects the pavilion to be built by Christmas, with the internal works and outfitting to be completed prior to next year’s football season. “We’ve got a couple of months’ leeway before the start of the 2016 season,” she

said. “It’s great to see that Shell Road Reserve Pavilion will be completed at the end of this year.” Council will continue its $12,000 contribution to the Peninsula Park and Ride shuttle bus and its $10,000 contribution to Carols in the Park.

BELLARINE Prostate Support Group will host talks by a specialist nurse and a prosthesis representative at this month’s meeting. The meetings take on the second Thursday of the month, June 11 this month, at Ocean Grove Community Health Centre in Presidents Ave. This is an open meeting for all interested in prostate cancer. Bowls club trivia night MATES: Josh Bouma (centre) with friends Luka Kapitelli and Jett Willey at Wallington Primary's A Day in May.

Class day for Josh THE smiles on the faces of Josh Bouma’s mates say it all. ‘It’s great to have you back’. Best pals Luka Kapitelli and Jett Willey weren’t the only ones celebrating A Day in May. The three boys’ all attend Wallington Primary where the principal and staff got fully behind the event supporting Challenge, a charity supporting kids with cancer. On Friday last week a large yellow sign over the entrance proclaimed ‘welcome back Josh, and the school donned yellow

and held a range of fun activities, all aimed at raising awareness of the Challenge and the work it does. Josh lives with a rare condition called aplastic anaemia and has received great support from Challenge while he was in Melbourne undergoing treatment for nearly a year. The illness and treatment have taken their toll on the youngster who has now lost his sight. Challenge CEO, David Rogers said ‘A Day In May’ is an important part of the Challenge Music Program that makes a real difference

to children living with cancer. “A Day In May was inspired by a little boy who was a member of Challenge, his favourite colour was yellow and who, regardless of his treatment, embraced life and surrounded those around him with happiness. Singing, dancing, playing an instrument and designing songs created moments away from the reality of being sick and helped this special boy stay positive,” David said. The A Day In May campaign sees schools nominate a convenient

day in May when students came to school dressed in yellow and make a gold coin donation to the Challenge Musical Moments Trust. Some schools will include musical activities as part of their Day In May. Challenge is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation that delivers daily support to children and families living with cancer. Since 1983, Challenge has helped over 25,000 children and families, making a real difference to their quality of life from the moment they are diagnosed, through treatment and beyond.

Beanies for brains ABOUT 150 people joined the Ocean Grove Primary School (OGPS) Parents Club for coffee last Friday, raising $1,660 for brain cancer research in just two hours. The group held “Beanies for Brains” at Driftwood Café last Friday, selling wristbands and beanies to raise money for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. “It was a fabulous morning,” said OGPS Parents Club member Fiona Dempster. “It wasn’t just the school community – there were a lot of people we didn’t know.” “It really brought the community together for a good cause,” said fellow member Karen Johnston. The Parents Club held the event to support a Beanie Day which was held at OGPS the same day. Students donated a gold coin to the Peace of Mind Foundation to wear a beanie to school. The day was the brainchild of OGPS student Ella Longridge, whose mother has brain cancer. “She wrote a letter to her principal to get the day started,” said Fiona. Driftwood Café owner Ty Simons contributed $635 of the total raised by donating the money from every coffee sold between 9am and 11am.

Pathway of imagination required Dear Editor, WE NOW have our spanking new performance space in the park due to an enormous contribution by community-minded residents and volunteers. The history of this area is full of other examples of community-led and implemented initiatives so I am offering my suggestion. Progressive local residents made sure that we retained our Nature Reserve on Grubb Road. Others have done great conservation work on the Barwon Heads Bluff and run the Lobster Pot marine and history education centre. Barwon Coast and Ocean Grove Coast Care do important work in protecting the coastal environment. CoGG and Parks Victoria have city- and state-wide agendas that we residents need to influence in order to get funds for the infrastructure in our patch. OCEAN Grove Toy Library is supporting tomorrow’s World Play Day. World Play Day on May 28 celebrates the role Toy Libraries play in supporting the child’s right to play. Play helps children develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Despite play being a basic need for children, its value is not well understood in society. With an emphasis on academic achievement and the growth of screenbased games there is less unstructured play. In Australia there are over 300 toy libraries, offering members access to a fantastic range of quality toys. Toy libraries welcome everyone to become members of a fun and growing community. World Play Day is a day to join in the fun and visiting a toy library can help – visit toylibraries.org.au for location information and opening times. Distinguishing raptors THERE has been so much welcome rain over the past few weeks, and when I haven't been at work it hasn't been great photography or getting-out-and-about weather. I did take a drive to Anglesea Heath where I saw many eastern spinebills and not much else. Eastern spinebills are one of my favorite birds so I had a lovely day. I went for a walk around the Geelong Botanical Gardens this week after work to check out the eastern spinebills there. It was a very dull day for photography so I didn't expect to get the camera out of the bag. From a distance I saw a medium-sized bird on a palm branch, and with my very poor eyesight I thought at f irst glance that the bird was a female gang-gang cockatoo. As I moved closer I saw a pale face and a yellow eye, and I realised that it was a raptor. The next trick was to move closer without the bird f lying away, which is always the tricky part of any bird encounter. Fortunately at the

What do you think? Our Nature Watch contributor Jen Carr thinks the bird pictured below left is a collared sparrowhawk, but she also believes it could be a brown goshawk (pictured below right). What do you think? Email Jen at jencarr@ y7mail.com and she will let us know in the next edition.

Botanical Gardens there are plenty of magnif icent old trees to hide behind, so I managed to creep up near the bird and obtain some images. After looking at the images when I popped them on the computer, I decided that the bird was a young collared sparrowhawk. It's always diff icult (for me) to distinguish between a collared sparrowhawk and a brown goshawk,

so I thought I'd make a short comparison list: • brown goshawk: eyes-frowning, with heavy brow (beetle brow); bill is small; cere yellow on female; legs are thicker, sturdy and yellow; tail is long, rounded; hides in foliage, perch in the open on branches waiting for prey; head proportional in size with body. • collared sparrowhawk: eyes-wide eyed, does

not have a heavy brow; bill is robust; cere is grey/cream on female; legs are long, thin and yellow; tail is sharp cornered, forked when folded; solitary and secretive, more trusting, allow people to approach; head is small. I thought that the bird in the photo had a small head, it was trusting and allowed me to approach, it was not hiding in foliage but remained out in the open, it had

a very small head, and it had a small fork in the tail when resting. having said that, I have been known to be wrong, so if anyone wants to write and tell me that they dispute my ID, feel free, at jencarr@y7mail.com. By the way, the Geelong Botanical Gardens are a lovely place to visit and there are some beautiful birds there. The hawk did create some excitement among the large red wattlebird and pied currawong population. I haven't been able to venture to the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve lately but John Sharp has been adding some great photos to the Facebook page, so feel free to check them out. If you are interested in any organised birdwatching activities you can check out the calendar of events organised by the Bellarine Birdlife group at www.birdlife.org. au/locations/birdlife bellarine-peninsula. Have a great few weeks. I'm off to Perth so I hope to see a Carnaby's black cockatoo and a few quokkas. Jen Carr

Pugsley Buzzard returns INTERNATIONAL touring and recording artist Pugsley Buzzard (pictured right) is returning to Ocean Grove next week. The singer songwriter and pianist has delighted audiences from Berlin to New Orleans with his unique and characteristic blend of jazz, blues, R ‘n’ B and soul. Pugsley’s shows are exciting and captivating and at the centre is his huge mesmerising voice and dazzling piano playing. Pugsley's playing features barrelhouse, boogie, stride piano stylings dripping with New Orleans funk and oozing with tantalising improvisation which ranges from delicate and moody to wild and ecstatic. Pugsley recorded his latest album Chasin' Aces in New Orleans during a month-long residency at the BMC in the French Quarter mid-2013. It

features an array of Crescent City luminaries joining Pugsley with some soulful performances of his latest compositions. "The opening bars promise a bourbon drenched musical trip to follow...Buzzard doesn't disappoint, serving up a solid mix of New Orleans R & B...Chasin' Aces is a well crafted, authentic body of work." Al Hensley, Rhythms Magazine. John Shand of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote: "If anyone is ever crazy enough to try to bottle Pugsley Buzzard's swampy take on jazz, keep your head well out of the way when you open it: this music will send the cork clean through the ceiling.” Pugsley Buzzard plays the Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Friday June 5 from 8.30pm. Tickets are $15. Bookings 5255 1566.

Weather serves up new challenges for Grove teams THE Winter tennis season has commenced with ten Junior and four Senior teams from Ocean Grove Tennis Club (OGTC). In the Juniors there are 10 winter teams, with nine new members, while some of the Summer players change to netball or football at this time of year. This is also the last ‘junior’ season for three great players, having to move to seniors once they are eighteen. The first week went well with all Juniors getting to know their new team mates and settling into the new rotations. Winter season is always a bit tricky with the cold Saturday mornings and the challenge of battling against inclement weather, but all of the players were committed and excited about starting up again. grove soccer

Women's division: Surfside Waves 0 Kardinia 0

Goaless but plenty of pace A BEAUTIFUL night for some beautiful soccer as the Waves women took it right up to last years Grand Finalists. In a tight game we played the way we want to play led by Wallace as sweeper and Murphy in the middle both instrumental in controlling the game when we had possession. Mills was in fine form

with Jennings on fire up front on the back of a PB in the GOR marathon last week. A game played at real pace from both teams who both had some great opportunities to score. Sparks,Pickett were Waves other major players, same effort, same time next week as we take on Geelong.

Waves results: weekend May 16-17 Mens Div 1:

Barwon 2 Surfside Waves 4 The Waves faced a tough task away to league leaders Barwon, and were still looking for their first win of the campaign. Both teams battled for possession in the early stages, and the blustery conditions made it difficult for either team to settle. Waves were patient and defended well, looking to catch Barwon on the break. Some tidy passing from Aaron Bond and Gabe McClelland saw them release Adrian Bond into space. Bond fired a shot toward the near post only to have the keeper parry straight to an oncoming Doug Miller who tucked it neatly over the keeper. Waves went down a player after coach Luis McClelland was concussed after receiving a knee to the temple. Waves were slower to recover after the break in play, and Barwon pulled one

back shortly after, and then took the lead shorty before the break, benefitting from an a clear offside call that was waved away by the referee. Surfside never dropped their heads and hit the second half with gusto. Barwon struggled to deal with the ongoing attack, and Doug Miller won a penalty for Surfside which was coolly converted by captain Adrian Bond. This rattled Barwon, and the Waves took full advantage, with Staffan Hargreaves winning another penalty which again was calmly scored by Adrian Bond. Steve McGain, who replaced McClelland, capped off a fine victory with a great solo effort to see the scores finish at 4-2 to Surfside. A brilliant and well-deserved win for the Waves. Womens Division: Deakin Ducks 1 Surfside Waves 1 We took on ladder leaders and

last seasons undefeated league minor premiers. Waves rose to the challenge in no uncertain terms. Playing some sublime football marshalled at the back superbly by Wallace, Sparks and Pickett with a new midfield trio of Murphy, Mills and Sattler we had the Ducks on the rack from the get to. Debut in goal for Fletcher who was fantastic. First to the ball was the message after last weeks game and everyone's response was brilliant. We scored from a pin point corner sent in by Sattler and Gillbee made no mistake. 1 up to the Waves. Cruel injury blows to Mills, Gillbee and Wallace left us with no subs in the second half. With play delayed whilst an ambulance came for Wallace we restarted with a penalty against us, duly converted. Outstanding performance from Murphy whose talk and action brought our shape back together with continual

running up front from Jennings as she threatened the Ducks defence with every run. We look forward to our next encounter, keep building ladies, good football to watch, keep up the hard work. Mens Division 3 Blue Drysdale 0 - Surfside Waves 3 The Waves travelled to Howard Glover Reserve to take on the undefeated league leaders, Drysdale. With several players unavailable the coach was willing to play if required. A stern warning was issued before the game started to switch on and don’t allow Drysdale the space to play. Fresh from the previous week’s victory, the confidence of the team was on display with a well disciplined first half. Two goals from Nicholson, who could have had a first half hat-trick when he sprung the offside trap and chipped the keeper only for it to

bounce back off the crossbar. Half time we went into the sheds two nil up. Waves scorned several chances and could have easily been five or six up at half time. A reminder was issued to the players to not let up on the pressure as we expected Drysdale to come at us. Drysdale rarely troubled us in the second half and Nicholson scored his third when he again sprung open the defence from a sublime long free kick from Powell. Mujica had a long range free kick parried by the Drysdale goalkeeper as well as a one on one saved by the keeper. Waves continued to press and continued to create chances. A pleasing and confidence building result for entire team. The smiles on the faces of the young men at Surfside Waves was a pleasing sight. Job done! Belief is a wonderful thing as we look to continue our current form.

SMALL but clean and contestable waves greeted the surfers for the second round of the HIF Victorian Longboard Titles at Ocean Grove earlier this month. Molly Powell (Anglesea) took out her fourth consecutive Open Women’s Longboard win where 15 state titles were decided with divisions ranging from under 18 to over 65. Powell, who has won the previous three years, continued her dominance of the Open Women’s Longboard division with a strong showing in the final. Locking in a heat total of 13.50, Powell placed ahead of Lucy Walsh (Point Lonsdale) who scored a total of 8.27 points. Morgan GriggsKennelly (Aireys Inlet) placed in third with Meg Gubbins (Torquay) in fourth. “I’m so happy to win again. It’s always good to see where you are at in terms of your surfing. I have fun competing against all the girls and hanging out at the beach” said Powell. “It was surprisingly strong swell out there. But it was fun, I found a couple of little pockets on the inside near the end of the heat.” The day saw good performances from the Ocean Grovers Chris McSween and Heather Peck as well as up and coming Barwon Heads junior Billy Whitton. The Open Men’s division saw firstround winner Rob Emslie (Ocean Grove) get knocked out of the competition in the second round leaving the door open for Liam Griggs-

Kennelly (Aireys Inlet) to take the final. The final was a close affair with Luke Lalor (Apollo Bay) eventually taking the round win with a heat total of 11.93. Placing second was Will Cousins (Torquay) with Liam Griggs-Kennelly and Oscar Lalor (Apollo Bay) in third and fourth, leaving Griggs-Kennelly just short of the state title. Only 40 points separated the top two surfers after the two events with Emslie on 3220 points and Griggs-Kennelly on 3180 points. Ben Considine (Barwon Heads) again showed his skills in the traditional Logging division, locking in the highest heat total and the ‘HIF Wave of the Day’. Considine nailed a 9.67 on his way to a heat total of 18.34 (out of a possible 20) in the Open Men Logger final. Placing in second was Will Cousins. Liam Griggs-Kennelly and Arturo Tallarida (Mornington Peninsula) placed in third and fourth.

Troy snares Bears win

Bellarine Bears president Matt Price and Leopold Community Bank community liaison manager Marg MacFadyen.

Defib machine for Reserve BELLLARINE Bears Baseball Club recently installed a defibrillator machine at the club’s home base at Wallington Recreation Reserve. The funding for the defibrillator machine was made courtesy of the Leopold Community Bendigo Bank's successful ‘Community Investment Program’.

Last season, a member of nearby club Deakin University baseball team suffered a heart attack while playing in the Geelong Baseball Association’s winter season. The 50-year-old was brought back to life by the efforts of others via CPR and an on-site defibrillator.

The man was taken to hospital and survived the incident but according to attending paramedics these actions quite likely saved the life of the father and husband. The defibrillator will be in operational use across the summer months when Wallington Cricket Club plays home games.

IT took a Troy Snarey three run home run for Wallington’s Bellarine Bears A Grade side to come out on top of the Lara Wildcats 6-3 in round 7 of the Geelong Baseball Association winter season. Two hits to Snarey (3 RBIs), with a hit a piece to Wayne Visser, Simon Murry and Chris Barker kept the Bears offence threatening all day. Two RBIs to Chris Bramwell put a score on the board earlier in the game for the Bears. In yet another superb outing pitcher Murry (4 strikeouts) threw

6 scoreless innings before handing over to reliever Bramwell (1 strikeout). The Bears A Reserve side defeated Lara Wildcats 2-0. In a game where defence dominated, pitcher Josh Crotty went the complete game throwing 6 strikeouts. With the bat an Alex Hockey double was backed up with hits to Crotty (1 RBI), Tyson O'Keefe, Lachlan Stott and Dane Wise-Graham (1 RBI). In C Grade the Bellarine Bears defeated Deakin Blues 10-4. The highlights of the game were home runs to Lachlan Hockey

and Luke Sarah. With the bat Clay Metcalfe had 3 hits (2 doubles), 2 hits to Andrew Riddett and a hit to Matt Connell. Taking to the mound, pitcher Danny Nichols (5 strikeouts) went a complete game. In the Under 15 competition, the combined Bellarine/Deakin side had to settle for a 6-6 draw against Werribee. For the offence Paul Hassan starred with 2 hits, with hits also to Gordon Kustera and Chris Hockey, Starting pitcher Lachlan Hockey (6 strike outs) and reliever Hassan (2 strike outs) led the defence for Bellarine/Deakin. The Under 13 Bellarine Bears went down to East Belmont Saints 9-10. Five runs in the last innings was not enough in the end for the Bears to overrun the opposition. Two hit each to Sam Lazarus (1 double) and Zac Brady (1 double) led the Bears hitting. Pitchers Brady and Jack Wearing fought hard for the Bears on the mound. Young Grubbers show competitive side

Round 1 Ocean Grove U18 v Geelong Amateur Ocean Grove 8.6.54 defeated by Geelong Amateur 15.11.101 The Grubbers Under 18 boys had their first taste of Division 1 footy, going down to Geelong Amateur in a spirited display. The first quarter unfolded like a horror story, with the Ammos completely overwhelming the shell shocked Grubbers,

dominating through the middle and bombarding the goals. A 7 goal lead ensued and perhaps the Grubbers may have thought this Division 1 caper was all too hard. Thankfully they are made of sterner stuff, and Ocean Grove knuckled down, started playing their brand of Grubbers footy and worked their way back into the game. Luke ‘the Duke’ Bastiaan controlled centre half forward, giving the

onballers a target to kick to, and Fletcher Sharrock put his aerial skills to great use, dominating up forward and jagging three goals. After being close to 50 points behind during the second quarter, the Grubbers had reduced the margin to 3 goals midway through the third term. The effort to get themselves back in the game eventually told on the home team, and the Ammos kicked away in

the final term to earn a well deserved win. There is plenty to work on, but also plenty to take out of the game. The leadership of James Teague was crucial when the team was under the pump, bottom age players such as Kyle Ewart, Riley Featherby and Corey Pfeiffer showed they belong and ruckman Ned Thorley showed his skills extend beyond the dancefloor with a spirited display in the ruck.

What this game did show, was that the Grubbers best footy is more than competitive against Division 1 opposition. The challenge is to produce it for longer periods of time and to reduce the gap between their best and worst. Goals: F. Sharrock 3, J. Nicholson 2, H. Walker 1, L. Bastiaan 1, B. Gist 1 Best: L. Bastiaan, K. Ewart, J. Teague, C. Pfeiffer, R. Featherby, H. Hoober.

Ladder leader after win away Round 2 Ocean Grove U16 (1) v Modewarre Ocean Grove 12.11.83 defeated Modewarre 4.4.28 Grubbers were up at the crack of dawn for the long trek out to the rolling hills of Modewarre. Leaving home in pitch black conditions, the boys from Ocean Grove must have been still half asleep by the time game started as they were totally outplayed by an undermanned 17 man Warriors team. Modda' were first to the ball and committed to the cause, and it was only through the efforts of Logan Taylor and Connor Harvey that the Grubbers were able to stay in touch on the scoreboard in the first half. With scores level at half time, some stern words from the coach woke

the Grubbers from their slumber. Suddenly it was the Grubbers who won first use of the ball, dominating the clearances and giving their forwards opportunity to hit the scoreboard. The skipper Michael Smith and Tom Ryan controlled the forward line as Ocean Grove headed for the ¾ time huddle with a 22 point lead. The floodgates opened in the final term with a 6 goal to one blitz and what looked like a potential disaster ended up a comfortable 55 point win. Probably the most pleasing aspect of the win was the performance of the younger group. Logan Taylor and Tom Ryan continued their good form while Max Sutton, Lachlan McVilly and Nathan Pearson put forward their best games of the year. The win leaves the Grubbers

on top of the ladder, facing a top of the clash with Geelong Amateur in the next round. Goals: T.Ryan 2. M.Smith 2, H.Pearce 2, R.Jordan 1, J.Caligiuri 1, N.Pearson 1, L.Taylor 1, C.Lyons 1. M.Henkel 1. Best: L.Taylor, C.Harvey, R.Jordan, M.Smith, O.Monteith, S.Luppino Round 2 Ocean Grove U16 (2)19.18.132 GWSP 2 0.3:3 The Grubbers U16 seconds kept the momentum flowing from last weeks inaugural win to convincingly account for an undermanned Geelong West St Peters side. The boys came out the blocks hard and fast and set the tone for the rest of the match. The versatile Jack Tregenza went up forward and got involved early. His strong leads and great overhead marking

resulted in 3 goals for the match, not bad for a full back! Ben Bennett was at his usual best getting in and under for the hard fought contested ball in what could easily have been a best on ground performance. The boys were relentless and drove the ball forward from the centre bounce with great link up football. Ronan Heally directed the troops with his voice and great work around the stoppages. Connor OKeefe and Lachy Habgood were silky, dodging and weaving through traffic to get clear and give the forwards every opportunity. The game was pretty much over at half time but there was no letting the foot of the pedal for this team. Hamish McManus attacked the ball like there was no tomorrow and was clean as a

whistle with his skills, hitting targets down field or dishing handballs to team mates streaming past. In a real highlight, Nick Malone put in his best game for the season so far, even after copping a real heavy knock. His endeavour and straight line attack on the footy was inspirational. Another to light up Memorial Oval was Louis Conquit. He too put in an absolute blinder at both ends of the ground and his support around the ball was outstanding. A welcome return to the side was Tyler Bryant who just helped himself to 3 goals, each as good as the next. He was one of 12 goal kickers on the day in a big win to a side on the move. Reds four goal quarter Round 6 - weekend of May 15 OGCC U10 Red (40) St Albans Brogden (36) Wow! A fantastic four goal last quarter saw our team win against St Albans Brogden by only 4 points. The team was encouragingly and enthusiastically guided by Dave Farrell in the absence of coach ‘Joffa’ and our Captain for the week Harry Hillier. Harry was strong in the back line early in the game and then won important possessions late in the game when the team needed. A great Captain’s game. Joey Chalmers played a great game also, being able to keep the ball in front of him and running onto it. Max McGuane, fought hard all game and worked back on his opponent as a strong backman. 2nd and 3rd efforts by Liam Williamson earnt him an award for his efforts. Goals were scored by Jakeb, Ted, Billy, Harry, Lachlan and Harrisyn, with a great team effort to come from behind and win. Great game Cobras. OGCC U10 White (21) Angelsea (3) Cobras white players refused to accept their underdog status and came out coyly up against an in form Anglesea side treading lightly up until the last quarter with both sides 3 points apiece. Jobe Lange snagged two along with Jackson Stephenson who capitalised on perfect feeding play from cobras mid-fielders Miller Keck and Preston Rokesky .Solid ruck work from Noah Collins, Jayden Thorn and Harry Rolfs gave runners Riley Hynson, Will Irwin and Ethan Hamilton room to move moving the ball superbly through the center. Jack Every earnt his pay and silenced the critics. Solid defending from Finly Rolfs, Ben Eales and Ashley Dwyer had an impact. Special mention to Michael Wilkinson, Elijah Ottoson and Jacko Stephensons "hanga" great effort. Awards to Jobe Lange, Preston Rokesky, Jackson Stephenson, Jayden Thorn and Jack Every OGCC U10 Orange (20) Aireys Inlet (42) The Boys took on Aireys Inlet for the second week in a row under much better conditions, a fantastic team effort saw a much better game from our boys, full of enthusiasm and run they took the game right up to the Eels. If not for one tall player for the Eels who rucked all day, our team could have won. With goals to Ryan, Henry, and a burst through the pack goal to James Dean, the boys were on fire. The Stow brothers were fearless, Ryan Drinkwater and James Devine taking strong marks and Liam bounced back from a kick in the head last week to get some important

Best Players awards to Henry Wood, Oliver Kristapsons, Hamish Stow and Silas Anthony. OGCC U10 Blue (36) Lara(29) A terrific all round team effort won the day for the Blues against a competitive Lara. Usual suspects Blake Hodgson, Jack Connolly and Levi Norman set up the game for a close last quarter with lots of support from our 1st year players. Tom Greer and Ari Mantzaris moved into the middle in the last quarter and thwarted any chance of a Lara victory with their great tackling and long kicks. Jarrah Hay got bowled over going for a mark but still managed to come up holding a Lara players boot! Jezalenko you beauty.. Straight out of the coaches book. Keep it going Blues. Awards to Angus Derham, Jamieson Hallam, Tom Greer and Lachie Appleyard. OGCC U12 Blue (102) Grovedale Black (25) It was a lovely warm Sunday morning and our boys treated us to a spectacular display of junior footy. Grovedale Black were met with wall after wall of fair tackles and found there was no room to move without having to face a Cobra. OGCC Blue were not only strong in defence, they were also hurting the opposition with some very accurate kicks at goal. In the third quarter with a target in mind, the boys kicked 5 goals in 15 mins, averaging a goal every 3 minutes!A mighty effort with a great display of courage from the boys who tackled well, smothered the ball and put their bodies on the line today. Goals kickers were Rhys Devlin, Sam Donegan, Hayden Ewart, Luke Ewart, Nick Gibbon, Will Lamb, Xavier Norman & Kirby Reilly, with Awards going to Lachlan Pfaender, Saxon Apps, Tim Hannan and Will Wright. OGCC U12 White (52) North Shore Seagulls (39) On a perfect day for football

the Cobras White boys came ready to play and put in a full 4 quarter effort against a strong opponent. Their constant attack on the ball and relentless pressure around the contest is what made all the difference on the day. The Cobras boys with a pre-game rev up from Coach Craig began quickly leading at qtr time 24 to 1 point. This continued in the second and third qtr with Airey’s Inlet having trouble penetrating the “ Pricey Wall” and led 65 to 14 at 3/4 time. The last qtr saw the floodgates open and the Cobras rammed on 8.3 to run out easy winners. Award winners for the day were Ned Gray, Bailey Hague, Darcy Mifsud and Koby Welch. Goalkickers were Hamish Green, Oscar Price, Connor Asquith, Luka Kapitelli, Joe Doedel , Jack Newland , Darcy Freeman , Max Lacy , Baxter Lindsay , Flynn Ness ,Cooper Ward and Koby Welch. OGCC U14 1's (46) Geelong Amateurs (0) The OGCC U/14 1's travelled to Queens Park to take on the Geelong Amateurs on Sunday. In slippery conditions, the boys has a solid 1st qtr and held a handy 10 point lead at the first break. Mitch Taylor was again dominating the clearances and was being

ably assisted by a rampant Ross Symonds. The team stepped it up in the 2nd qtr and with a stingy backline & a hard working forward line the 2nd qtr was all Cobras & they held a 36 half time lead. The second half turned into a grind but with the backline being impenetrable and Luke Giblin, Kobe Annand and Tom Ness teaming beautifully across half back, the boys held the opposition scoreless running out 46 point winners. OGCC U14 2's (68) Modewarre (56) The Cobra 2nds played good contested football in the 1st quarter and got the score on the board early to take control of the game however their pressure backed off in the 2nd quarter letting Modewarre get back into the game. This was addressed at half time and a better 3rd quarter was delivered by the boys. The last quarter was a good challenge for the boys who came from behind to kick a number of goals and they posted a very solid win. Effort delivered reward! OGCC U14 3's (0) South Barwon 2 (62) This week the boys travelled to South Barwon to play their 2nd side. Although they were too big and strong we battled extremely hard all day and everyone contributed. Connor FisherMcNeil was our dominant big man on the Ground, Alexander Warner was hard at the footy and Ben Soppitt and Cooper Falconer were outstanding. Well done boys, a tough game of footy. Round 7- weekend of 22nd May (Friday night and Saturday games only) OGCC U10 Orange (47) Drysdale Boothroyd (16) The Orange boys travelled to Drysdale to play their Boothroyd side under lights on Friday night, a tight opening quarter with the ball spending more time up Drysdale's end with them only scoring one behind, inside the last couple of minutes Koby

Millar-Burton got his first goal for the season from the goal square. James Devine kicked our only goal in the second giving us a 7 point lead at the main break. The boys could feel their first win for the season was possible, and with brilliant goals to Henry Wood, James Stow and Griffin Anthony's first goal in only his second game, gave us a good lead at three quarter time. Full of run and dash, the boys were relentless, Henry Wood was full of run, Tane Napier was devastating on the wing, Joe McGregor, Ben Bowers and Oliver Kristapson were rock solid in defense and Ryan Drinkwater played a brilliant captain's game helping us outscore Drysdale in every quarter, giving us our first victory for the season. Awards to William Croswell, Sunny Ofthsea, Joe McGregor and Ben Bowers, a great team effort! OGCC U10 Blue (30) Torquay Grossman (13) A home game this week for the Blue boys which proved to be a great game of footy. A quick start by Torquay had our defenders busy in the first quarter. The boys hit their straps in the 2nd with a great goal from Luke Devlin and a super bouncing goal by Kai Caligari. Tough tackling and rebound play by Ari Mantzaris helped Jack Connelly finish with a terrific running goal. Torquay mounted challenge in the last but outstanding defensive work by Tom Greer, Jack Connelly and Angus Derham made sure the blues got the job done.

Awards this week to Archie Moran, Luke Devlin, Austin Webber, Zaden Bell and Lachie Allan. OGCC U10 Red (12) Torquay Voss (44) Noah Poirier led our Under 10 Red team today as Captain. He started off in the back pocket and held the defence up well. Lachlan Morrow was another strong player and when playing half forward he presented himself well and created team options by bringing his team mates into the play. Torquay were held to only one goal in the 3rd quarter and Shay Kilpatrick worked well at half back with strong marks and long kicks. Oscar Koec-Teaque contributed and played a team game and also was strong with his marking. Not a win today but all players put in great efforts. Go Cobras! OGCC U12 White (1) South Barwon 1 (90) It was an extremely tough day at the office for the

Cobras White boys today. After a slow start to the game the boys found themselves in big trouble at quarter time with South Barwon piling on 6 first quarter goals to zero. It was much of the same in the second quarter but that's when the Cobras spirit and fight kicked in, the second half was a great arm-wrestle and although they could not close the gap on the scoreboard the boys played their hearts out and kept the home team to only 4 second half goals. The Cobras were fantastically led by their captains for the day in Jhonte Lange and Saxon Copeland who along with their teammates never gave up and continued to fight right to the final siren. Great effort boys! Encouragement awards this week to Fletcher Keck, Ned Poynder, Izaak Terhorst and Bailey Scarpa. OGCC U12 Blue (8) Torquay Grossman (23) It was perfect footy weather for a Cobra home game against an inform Torquay Grossman. The Torquay team got away to a 2 goal lead in the 1st quarter, with these being the only goals they scored all day. The Blue team battled hard all day displaying some tight footy with great smothers, tackling and a great goal in the 3rd quarter by Cooper Styles had the boys really chasing a win. The last quarter proved a tough contest and our boys could not peg the opposition back. A great effort today boys! Awards to Aston Lynch, Liam Chapman, Josh Giblin and Max West. OGCC U14 2's (111) Torquay Nairn (1) The early game today required a wakeup call for everyone and Cobra 2nds were on from the 1st bounce putting multiple goals on the scoreboard through the 1st and 2nd quarters. Brilliant run and carry off our half back line provided many opportunities to be set up further down field. The 3rd and 4th quarters continued in much the same style with good solid efforts all around the ground from all the players. A very good win was enjoyed by all with multiple goal kickers.

286-point mauling of Power puts Grove back on track

Mammoth win for Grubbers MARK HEENAN

A GOAL bonanza from Grubber star forwards Travis Gavin and Brayden Warren saw Ocean Grove smash lowly Newcomb by 286 points on May 16. A livewire Gavin booted 13 goals, while youngster Warren had a day out at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve with 11 majors. Warren’s 11 goals was his best return at senior BFL level, while the last time Gavin booted 10 or more was against Newcomb in round one 2014. The 286-point defeat was Newcomb’s biggest loss of 2015 and eclipsed Geelong Amateur’s 279-point thrashing of the Power at Queens Park in round three. The resounding win saw the Grubbers move into eighth position on the ladder with a 2-4 record after six rounds. Ocean Grove lost its first four games of the season, but its percentage rose from a poor 60.92% to a much healthier 117.95%. At quarter time the Grubbers had already posted their highest score
