OCTOBER 9, 2020 Ocean City Today Police arrest local accused of igniting apartment building

By Josh Kim Staff Writer (Oct. 9, 2020) Police arrested Charles L. Correll Jr., 60, of Ocean City, after he allegedly attempted to burn down a downtown apartment building last Tuesday. Early that morning, firefighters went to the complex to battle the fire, police reported. After the flames extinguished, fire investigators examined the scene and determined that the cause C. Correll Jr. of the fire had been an incendiary item.

According to the police report, the fire damaged a 10-foot by 20-foot section of the exterior wall, and several units were filled with smoke.

An officer contacted the building owner, who said he was in the process of selling it to Correll.

Reviewing city surveillance footage, police saw a male fill up a 5-gallon bucket at a nearby gas station.

Police found the male, later identified as Correll, around the 100 block of First Street and questioned him.

Correll apparently kept placing his hands in his pocket, and after police asked him to stop he threw out the contents, which included a credit card, butane lighter and a pack of cigarettes.

Correll denied knowing anything about the fire, but confirmed he was buying the building and wanted to demolish it to build a house.

An officer asked Correll if he had intended to hurt anyone with the fire, and he replied that he did not. Shortly after, he apparently said he wanted to speak to Mayor Rick Meehan and wanted to show the officer documents he had regarding issues with the city and the property.

As he did this, a fire marshal told the officer that he had interviewed the gas station cashier who said Correll had told him he was going to burn down the building.

Police arrested Correll and charged him with second-degree arson, arson threat, and first-and second-degree malicious burning.
