sort have been making a similar effort as well, according to Carrie Linch of the city’s Seasonal Workforce Committee. “We’ve been in touch with the sponsors that have had most numbers of Irish students,� Linch said. “They were very supportive and wanted to get more involved, because we feel that there is a great need for these students to have more support before coming over.� The number of Irish students in the resort during the season is estimated to be between 600 and 700, although the State Department no longer gives its official numbers. The Fairbends gather their own data by asking those who visit the center to provide the number of students living in their house or apartment. Last year’s total was 620. Irish Outreach also coordinates with the Ocean City Police Department to assist students who are arrested in the resort for minor offenses, typically noise or alcohol violations. Many are given community service sentences that they are able to fulfill by volunteering at the center or at the Knights of Columbus on 99th Street. Recent changes in state law will now allow officers to arrest, cite, and release minor offenders on the spot without taking them to court to be charged, something that the OCPD has previously said will help with the logistical nightmare of shuttling offenders back and forth from 65th Street. “I’m hoping – and I think the police are hoping, too – that it will cut down on a lot of the hassle and difficulty for these kids who get hit for small stuff,� Rick Fairbend said.
