TSU Board of Regents Selects Sole Finalist for President The Texas Southern University Board of Regents named Dr. Lesia L. Crumpton-Young as the sole finalist for the position of President of Texas Southern University. A confirmation vote by the Regents will occur at the next board meeting on June 17, 2021. The transition team will be lead by Regent Stephanie Nellons-Paige and Interim President Kenneth Huewitt. “Dr. Crumpton-Young is an experienced University leader and tireless advocate for students. Her impeccable credentials made her standout among the candidates. She brings with her an exciting and bold vision for Texas Southern University that aligns with the goals set forth by the Board of Regents," said TSU Board of Regents Chairman Albert H. Myres, Sr. Myres thanked the Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Regent Marc Carter, who narrowed the list of candidates for president to three finalists who were invited to Houston for interviews. Crumpton-Young will replace TSU Interim President Kenneth Huewitt, who has served in the role since April 2020. Regents as the sole finalist for the next president,” said Crumpton-Young. “TSU is a vibrant and treasured institution filled with legacy, excellence and promise. It will be an honor and privilege to serve.” Crumpton-Young has served as the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at Morgan State University since 2019. Previously, she served at Tennessee State University in several roles including, Vice President for Research and Institutional Advancement and Chief Research Officer and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Research and Sponsored Programs and Chief Research Officer. Prior to her role at Tennessee State University, she served as Associate Provost of Undergraduate Studies at Texas A&M University, Program Director in the Education and Human Resource Directorate of the National Science Foundation and Associate Dean of Engineering at Mississippi State University. In those roles, she initiated new hiring strategies to diversify University faculty and garnered seven-figure monetary gifts to fund student scholarships, research, and support Diversity Equity and Inclusion as well as student and faculty success. She received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University. In addition, Crumpton-Young holds a Master of Business Administration from Tennessee State University.

WSU's School of Music is happy to announce Dr. Darryl Singleton as our new tenure-track Assisnt Professor. Dr. Singleton will teach Black Music in America, Music and Social Justice, and jazz umset. He will also perform with the faculty jazz ensemble, Jazz Northwest. Dr. Singleton is one five faculty that will begin in the fall as part of WSU's cluster hire initiative. Welcome Dr. Sineton!

Washington, D.C. native; Singleton began his education career teaching at the Duke Ellington gh School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Notably, he was then the first instrumental enseme director at Gallaudet University for the deaf and hearing impaired. He went on to teach and, percussion, theory, and arts appreciation at three universities in Washington, D.C.; Louisina, and Texas. His most recent post was as percussion instructor and interim director of bands. In xas, he has served since 2011 as the president of Texas Black Music Educators, an organization dvocating diversity in music education.

a percussion performer, Singleton’s credits include a wide variety of experiences including erformances with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, The Scott plin Chamber Orchestra, and the Conrad Johnson (Jazz) Orchestra among many others.

s talents are not limited to music. He has written and directed plays and musicals for schools nd community organizations. He and his wife self-produced a spoken word CD, “Angels are usy.” He also has experience in music production, videography, live sound, and lighting design. nd, as a result of five years spent in Latin America with his family as a missionary, he is fluent in panish.

e received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Howard University, a Master of Music in usic Performance (percussion) from Florida State University and earned his terminal degree, octor of Musical Arts in Music Education, from Boston University. His dissertation, “Black Band for own Students,” investigated some of the pedagogical and cultural assumptions present in music ducation, and included findings that touched on cultural dynamics evident in adjudication of me marching band performances. Singleton has plans to expand on this and other topics reted to equity, equality, and justice as he joins the Cougar Family as part of WSU’s cluster hire ddressing racism and social inequality.

Doc D” is celebrating his 26th year of marriage to his wife, Valencia Kay. Other than his main bby – music, Darryl enjoys biking and martial arts-related fitness. He and Valencia are the oud parents of two “adult boys” that will be living in Pullman with them.

Mr. Howard is currently the President of the Brazoria County NAACP.

Ocean Alumni Please support Texas Southern University and Ocean of Soul Alumnus Eugene Howard as he embarks on a campaign to become the Congressional Representative for District 22 in Brazoria County. Mr. Howard is currently the President of the Brazoria County NAACP.
