A message from the Supervisor

PATHWAY 2040: PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE Pathway 2040 — the process of updating the Prince William County Comprehensive Plan — invites us to move past doing things a certain way just because “that is how it has always been done.” It is an opportunity to come together to create a shared vision for our future based on our current and emerging needs and preferences, incorporating innovations and lessons learned over the years since our last Comp Plan update, crafting a framework for the policies that will make that future possible. I have long advocated for protecting the environment, conserving publicly-accessible green space, and managing growth in a responsible way. Our current landuse policies do not do enough to meet these goals. Over the last two decades, thousands of acres of undeveloped land in Western Prince William have been consumed by large-lot residential development. Of the 73,000 acres of privatelyowned land in the rural area, just 17,000 remained undeveloped as of 2020. Slated to be carved into hundreds of 10-acre residential lots by-right under current policies (with no ability for the Planning Commission or Supervisors to review or mitigate impacts), the clock is ticking for those 17,000 acres. Each of these homes would come with its own septic field and no provisions for public green space, contiguous wildlife corridors, or proffers for County services.
