FROM THE EDITOR Preppy Pretty

When I look at the cover of this issue I think of two things: Key Lime Pie and Tequila. I guess both are synonymous with parties but I’d have to say it’s the vibrant green color of limes that really fueled my inspiration for this issue. When we set out to design a Palm Beach preppy feel, I couldn’t help but reminisce of my childhood days in Florida for inspiration. I grew up in Palm Beach County....Wellington, FL to be exact. Between walks on Worth Avenue and the popped collars of the players at the Wellington equestrian fields, preppy was a way of life there. I remember my mom being the cutest, preppy loving lady who always enlightened us on the finer, fashionable things in life (and she still does to this day). From tennis to tea parties, and Ralph Lauren to Lilly Pulitzer she has a keen eye for prep and its practically perfect lifestyle. Preppy can take on several meanings, but for me, it means bright colors paired with crisp white, sunny south Florida, vibrant floral patterns, polo, and anything with stripes and great manors. Preppy is put-together and honestly, I do believe that’s just how all events should be. Well thought-out, well planned and graced with good intention. So you can see, the lime does not fall far from the tree.

In the following pages you’ll find new insights on event elements, party inspiration, gorgeous Vera Wang gowns paired with our favorite Stella & Dot Jewelry pieces and many marvelous real events. What’s even better is that this party doesn’t end on page 144. We shot so many inspiring spreads and didn’t quite have the room to feature them all here, so there’s more preppy goodness for you online too! Cozy up with this issue and enjoy. And, be sure to pop your collar or slip on a sun dress and toast to the good things in life this summer.

EVENT ELEMENT ACCESSORIES OLD SCHOOL PARTY ESSENTIALS EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN. There’s nothing more timeless and oh so right now than using vintage items to tie your event’s décor together. Whether it’s a daytime birthday party or a nighttime soiree, accessories from days gone by give any gathering a nostalgic and cohesive feel. Here’s how you can use old-school elements at your next event: PAPER STRAWS MAKE DRINKS TASTE BETTER. There’s just something about sipping a drink through a paper straw that actually makes it taste better whether it’s a Shirley Temple or a Gin Fizz.

OLD GLASS BOTTLES BECOME UNIQUE VASES, DRINK GLASSES, AND DÉCOR. Whether you’re serving chocolate malteds in old milk bottles or showcasing bunches of wildflowers in mismatch vases, glass bottles can add so much easygoing charm to any event’s décor.

TREAT BAGS MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY. No matter if the party favor is ripe red cherries, fresh popcorn or multicolored candies, treat bags will bring a smile to guests’ faces of all ages. And now, with the reemergence of all things vintage, you can get treat bags in everything from blue gingham to classic brown to black damask to those with retro popcorn and peanut logos like you used to find at ballparks, carnivals and fairs.

POLKA DOTS AND STRIPES GO WITH EVERYTHING.

SHOWN ABOVE Petite Glass bottles with pink stripey straw available at Shop Sweet Lulu. Bottles available in a set of 12 for $28.00; Straws available in a package of 12 for $4.00; multiple colors available

There’s so much more than your average multi-color balloons, plates and cups available for special events from companies like Shop Sweet Lulu (www.shopsweetlulu.com) and The Sugar Diva (www.thesugardiva.com). There are cupcake liners, treat cups, twine, pillow boxes, party garlands, paper cones and more in all manner of classic colors and designs from polka dots to stripes to toile. There are stickers and labels and tags that come in cute vintage patterns. So why go with same old, same old when you can give your guests a blast from the past? Using accessories from a time gone by can call to mind a day at the soda pop shop or a night at Jay Gatsby’s house. Whatever the effect you’re going for, consider using party essentials from a simpler time, when things were made with care and the little details mattered. -

EVENT ELEMENT DECOR DECORATE WITH DECALS If you want to radically change the look of a room in your house, you might paint the walls or put in new hardwood floors. In the same way, you can make a dramatic difference in an event space by including a sizeable decal. These creative and custom images significantly add pop and signature style to an event space. THE OPTIONS Decals can be placed on walls or floors and everything in between from ghost chairs to bars to chargers. They can be an image or a mural or a paragraph or graffiti. Decals have endless and completely customizable applications. According to Neal Gollob, one of the owners of I Do Linens, Couture Décor Elements (www. idolinens.com), decals can be nearly anything you want. For instance, I Do Linens typically creates images up to 60 inches by 150 feet, but they recently turned a dance floor into a huge monopoly board at Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta by putting individual squares together to form the whole board.

THE NITTY GRITTY

See more online

Decal images are printed on different types of vinyl stock for their particular application. There are all kinds of materials that stick to different surfaces without damaging those surfaces after use. The ones made for floors can withstand shoe scuffing, but will still peel away easily after an event. To get a custom decal, most people provide an image to the production company. That company then creates the image and mails it to the customer with instructions or brings it to the event while it’s being set up. Production companies like I Do Linens can create custom images or use the ones they are provided. “Our imagery often comes from the stationer,” said Gollob. “If it’s a monogram, it was likely created for the invitations.” SHOWN ABOVE Photo by The Decisive Moment (www.thedecisivemoment.com); Floor decals by I Do Linens (www.idolinens.com). We featured this event online and you can see more pictures of the floor and wall decals incorporated in the decor of the this event online at www.occasionsonline.com. SEARCH: ‘Decal.’

THE PRICING “The beauty of this kind of creative décor is that no matter how many colors are used, the price is the same for a certain size,” said Gollob. “However, the amount of square feet requested will affect the price. And if the image needs to be intricately cut there is a small fee.” Decals are most closely comparable to gobos, or devices that produce patterns of light on various surfaces. But decals have a crisper image and are not erased by shadows like they might be on a crowded dance floor.

THE END RESULT A decal will turn your blank spot into a statement. While most are not reusable, decals are easily removed after an event. Whether it’s the names of the bride and groom in cursive above the head table or sponsor logos displayed in a prominent position, a decal can transform a regular old wall, floor, tabletop, chair and so much more into a signature space. -

EVENT ELEMENT STATIONERY THE CALLIGRAPHY COMPONENT With its delicate lines and elegant form, calligraphy has become a beautiful element of the wedding and event world. Derived from the Greek word for “beautiful writing,” calligraphy is an art form that requires patience and attention to detail. “Anything that is hand-written shows the extra time and care that someone took to produce it, and stationary is no exception,” says Laura Hooper of Laura Hooper Calligraphy, whom began using calligraphy at the age of 12. Your stationery helps set the initial tone for your event and gives your guests a sense of the event to come.

ARE ALL CALLIGRAPHERS THE SAME? “Calligraphy, like other art forms, is personal and expressive so while you may have calligraphers with similar styles, you will find elements in the design that are unique to each calligrapher,” says Moya Minns of MM Ink (www.mminkstudio.com), who studied under Master Penmen like Sheila Waters and Pat Blair, Chief White House Calligrapher. Calligraphers are artists and I have never met two artists who were just alike. While you will find that many calligraphers have a special niche, experience and the variance of pens will also play a role in the originality of each calligrapher’s design.

WHAT CAN BE HAND WRITTEN FOR MY EVENT?

SHOWN ABOVE Photography by Claudia Lopez Photography; Calligraphy pieces by MM Ink (www.mminkstudio.com).

“I have not found a surface that I could not accentuate with handwritten calligraphy,” says Maren Nicholas of Dreamweaver Calligraphy (www. dreamweavercalligraphy.com), specializing in matching her handwriting style to the various fonts on a bride’s invitation. In addition to your standard stationary items – invitations, place cards, menus, programs – brides are hiring calligraphers to personalize signage, guest books, mirrors, labels, seating charts, aisle runners, and glassware.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The average cost of envelope calligraphy is about $2.50 - $4.00 per outer envelope, but of course the prices can vary depending on the calligrapher and style. “Pointed pen styles are more difficult and therefore an artist who specializes in pointed pen is going to cost more than someone who uses a flat point pen or felt tip pen,” says Laura Hooper (www.lhcalligraphy. com). As it should, the expense will usually fall in line with the level of your calligrapher’s experience. Stationary is meant to be very personal and should be a reflection of your character and style. Calligraphy is just that. It can transform paper into a vision of who you are and what you want your guests to experience the day of your event. -

EVENT ELEMENT RENTALS THE LOGISTICS OF OUTDOOR EVENTS When you attend a party under a brilliant white tent, rarely do you think about the chairs, linens, tent or temperature. But these things don’t just appear. When it comes to outdoor occasions, you’ll encounter a bit more pre-planning than you might waltzing into a ballroom. Here are four biggies you need to consider if you want to take your party outside.... We asked Dan Nolan, owner of Tents Unlimited (www.tentsunlimited.com) based in Atlanta. “Sometimes people think of throwing an outdoor event and imagine just putting up a tent and getting a dance floor,” said Nolan. “But really you need a cover, flooring, electricity, climate-control, if you choose that, and the site may require permitting.” Get started by considering these...

TO TENT OR NOT TO TENT? Tents will protect guests from rain and sun and provide the ultimate “plan B” in case of inclement weather. Options range from “pop-up” tents or canopies for smaller events to professionally installed tents for larger scale occasions. If you rent a tent, a building permit may be required depending on the size of the tent and its location so be sure to work with your rental company on this.

HOW’S THE TEMPERATURE? If you opt for a tent, then you’ll probably want to opt for heating, ventilating, and/or air conditioning depending on the season. There is nothing worse than guests jockeying in front of a fan at an event because they are sweating profusely or huddling together because they are cold.

WHERE WILL PEOPLE POTTY?

SHOWN ABOVE Photography by Andy Nolan Photographer; Tent by Tents Unlimited (www.tentsunlimited. com; Portable Restroom from Atlanta Watercloset (www. atlantawatercloset.com).

With many people eating and drinking, you will need bathrooms. If you are going to use a house, beware that any septic issues will intensify with the increased use. It may be necessary to rent portable units. Companies like Atlanta Watercloset (www.atlantawatercloset.com) bring a little bit of class to portable restrooms by keeping them uber clean and decorating their facilities with flowers, air freshener and toiletries.

DO YOU NEED FLOORING? There are many options for outdoor flooring to cover almost all types of surfaces and even uneven ones. The flooring can be for dancing, of course, or for surface protection and decorative enhancement. You can even cover a pool allowing your pool to illuminate the event. Your outdoor event is only going to happen once, so be sure to consider all the important aspects and find a responsive company with proof of outstanding work that will provide you with quality materials. -

EVENT ELEMENT COCKTAILS COOL SUMMER COCKTAILS Sure to beat the heat this summer, cocktail hour is taking on a new meaning these days. Brides and Grooms everywhere are adding a personal touch to their reception by choosing a signature cocktail. This is a great addition to an open bar or can easily cut the drink tab by offering your guests beer, wine and a signature cocktail. “Creating a cocktail party they can’t miss is as easy as turning on your favorite music, dimming the lights, preparing bite-sized appetizers and to top it all off, stir up a signature cocktail”, says Atlanta’s award-winning event planner Tony Conway of A Legendary Event. Tony Conway’s recommendation that never goes out of style is A Legendary Splash from A Legendary Event.

A LEGENDARY SPLASH • 1 1/2 oz. Ketel One Vodka • 1/2 oz. Chambord • 3 oz. Lemonade Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a tall glass. Garnish with fresh berries or a lemon.

See more ABOVE on page SHOWN Photography by Melissa Schollaert Photography 116 (www.melissaschollaert.com); a mix of cool cocktails for an outdoor wedding featured on page 116 in this issue.

“Signature cocktails are an excellent way to define your personal style, and will offer your guests a lasting impression of your special day. This martini is the perfect choice for the bride looking for style and elegance...in a glass!” says Carmaleita Lyght of Lyght House Cocktails.

WEDDING CAKE MARTINI (“It’s awesome; it tastes just like a vanilla cake!”) • 1.5 oz Absolut Vanilla Vodka • 1.5 oz Malibu coconut rum • 1.5 oz pineapple juice • Capful of vanilla extract • Splash of grenadine Combine all ingredients in a shaker, with a half cup of ice. Shake well and strain into a frosted martini glass. Drop a maraschino cherry in the bottom of the glass (optional). Maybe you are looking for a cocktail that features your favorite liquor or matches with the color scheme you have set for the event. Even the most ordinary drink can be fashioned into the popular choice of the evening and inspire your guests to have fun and mingle. -

EVENT ELEMENT CATERING CATERING CONUNDRUM: SEATED VS BUFFET The menu is, quite often, the center of attention at events. But before the salad, entree and dessert are finalized, the reception style should be set. Between seated serve and buffets, there’s much to consider that will affect the flow, style and overall timeline of your event. SEATED SERVE The seated serve dinner is the most traditional and usually more formal. So if you are envisioning black ties and sipping champagne, this may be the way to go. There are a few different ways you can approach a seated served dinner event. You can have a plated service where your guests will be served their entire meal already prepared for them on a plate. Or you can opt for a family style arrangement where food is served in platters and guest pass and serve themselves.

The Pros:

Managing time and flow of the event is easier, you are less likely to run out of food since plates are planned for each guest, and it’s less work for your guests

The Cons:

Usually more expensive, may not allow for as creative of a presentation, menu cards must be sent prior to the wedding SHOWN ABOVE Photography by Ben Vigil Photographers (www.benvigil.com); Chef attended catering station by Talk of the Town Catering (www.talkofthetownatlanta.com).

BUFFET Taking a non-traditional look, buffet style events are becoming more and more popular because they fit into a smaller budget and give the host and/ or hostess an opportunity to get creative. “You can add décor and other elements to showcase the food, especially if it’s a themed event,” says Libby Terrell of A Divine Event. A trend at buffet style receptions that seem to be taking place of the long buffet tables, are food stations. You can even take it a step further and go for action stations where the chef is actually on-site preparing your menu for your guests as they watch.

The Pros: Allows for more creativity at the buffet showcase area, guests enjoy the interaction and mingling that buffet style events invite, allows for a tapas style menu so that guests can sample a larger variety of foods

The Cons:

Guests may have to wait in line for their dinner, getting up from the table can be disruptive to other guests, with guests serving themselves, this makes accidents more common -

VENUE GUIDE

GETTING STARTED

WHAT TYPE OF OCCASION DO YOU ENVISION? IT ALL STARTS WITH YOUR VENUE. In a city like Atlanta, the options are limitless. There are appropriate facilities for parties of all sizes, but when you’re choosing the perfect spot for your next event, all of those options can be overwhelming. The size of the crowd will narrow down your choices, but then there are numerous types of venues to consider. Whatever your particular tastes, when the time comes to throw your special occasion, make sure you know what to look for in a venue before you book.

CONFERENCE CENTERS & FUNCTION FACILITIES What makes them so special? A banquet hall, conference center or function facility is often an excellent choice for an event because this venue type offers cost-efficient and hassle-free packages. They were designed with big occasions in mind, so they will have workable layouts, which will translate into easy food and beverage flow. They are also likely to already have tons of wedding and special event experience, making their site coordinators invaluable resources at your disposal.

COBB GALLERIA CENTRE

Things to remember: Function facilities may host multiple events per day, affecting your starting and ending times. Make sure you and your planner work out your timeline and don’t feel crunched. Often you can book a large block of time (say 10 hours) to avoid feeling squeezed in by another event. Another thing to think about is that a function facility’s ambiance may allow for more accoutrements/florals/imagination to make it your own. Consider it a blank canvas that you can mold into your own personal masterpiece.

PLUS :: These type of venues are designed with big occasions in mind, so they will have workable layouts

COUNTRY CLUBS What makes them so special? Country clubs can be excellent venues because of the extra activities they may offer, like golf and tennis. Country clubs also host events frequently and have experienced staff members who are accustomed to dealing with large groups. The interiors of country clubs will vary, but the grounds will be striking and may include lakes, golf courses, gardens or marinas. ST IVES COUNTRY CLUB

PLUS :: These type of venues can be excellent venues because of the extra activities they may offer.

34 | THE MAGAZINE FOR CELEBRATING IN STYLE

Things to remember: Facilities at a country club are not completely private for your event (members will most likely still be on site), and your food options may be more limited than at a restaurant. That said, the food that is offered will be of high quality. Because country clubs regularly accommodate small to large events, they are adept at catering to a crowd. Also keep in mind that you may have to be sponsored by a member to host your event at a country club.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

HOTELS & RESORTS What makes them so special? Hotels and resorts can be fabulous for events because they have onsite accommodations and added amenities like shuttles, spas, restaurants, concierge service, etc. You can choose a hotel for its close proximity to an airport and/or particular destination. Also, hotels may have low or no rental fees for venue space if you book a block of guest rooms. W ATLANTA - BUCKHEAD

PLUS :: Providing everything you could possibly need in one location, these venues make things super easy for you and your guests.

Things to remember: Hotels and resorts often use ballroom dividers, which might not fit in with your vision/theme. Ask to see them in advance. Consider having your own dividers created to match your color scheme if theirs are not what you envisioned. These custom dividers can later wind up in a bedroom or living room as priceless mementos from the event. Another thing to remember is that hotels and resorts host multiple events at once. This means that they know what they’re doing, but it may also means that your block of hotel rooms should be secured early and that you need to let your guests know to book in advance to take advantage of a group rate. Providing everything you could possibly need in one location, these venues make things super easy for you and your guests. Of course, amenities, ambiance and cost can vary greatly depending on the hotel or resort you choose.

HISTORIC & ANTEBELLUM HOUSES What makes them so special? Mansions, antebellum homes and historic houses have impressive architecture, historical significance and manicured grounds, providing distinctive (and memorable) settings. These venues tend to host one event at a time, giving you maximum privacy. Things to remember: One thing to consider at these venues is space. If there is no large ballroom, parties may have to be split into smaller rooms or take place outside. There may be special restrictions to ensure the care of these sacred spots. And these venues are often in gorgeous but secluded locations, so consider transportation, accommodation and ease of access by your guests.

THE HAZLEHURST HOUSE

Libby Terrell, Director of Sales and Marketing for Magic Moments, with four antebellum-style wedding venues across Atlanta, suggests an important question to keep in mind. “Most historic homes have beautiful gardens and ‘outdoor rooms,’ but do they offer a comparable rain plan for the ceremony, and how good of a choice is the alternative? You don’t want to have to settle for a windowless, stuffy room.” Historic houses, mansions and antebellum homes have a high style quotient, but expect to allocate more of your budget for this luxury.

35 | THE MAGAZINE FOR CELEBRATING IN STYLE

PLUS :: These venues tend to host one event at a time, giving you maximum privacy.

MUSEUMS & LIBRARIES What makes them so special? Libraries and museums have distinctive architecture and cultural ambiance. They may even have exhibitions on display that can add another element of entertainment to your event. Things to remember: Libraries and museums are open to the public, which means they potentially have particular rules and hours of operation. Know the red tape before choosing this type of venue, and remember that less coordination assistance may be at your disposal at libraries and museums than at other venues. Your guests won’t soon forget these settings, but you will want to hire a professional planner to help with the details.

PLUS :: These type of venues have distinctive architecture and cultural ambiance.

THE SWAN HOUSE AT ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER

PUBLIC PARKS & GARDENS What makes them so special? Events at public parks, gardens and beaches solve decorating dilemmas by allowing the manicured landscape and/or Mother Nature do the work. A natural setting like one of these can be a lovely complement to a relaxed event.

THE ATRIUM

Things to remember: Required permits and other restrictions may apply at these venues. Along with Mother Nature’s wonderful touch come outdoor obstacles like insects, temperature, noises, allergens, dirt and mud. A backup plan including lighting, music, seating, space, etc. will be a must in case of inclement weather. We’re talking about the great outdoors, so remember that everything will probably have to be rented – from tables and chairs to portable restrooms and dance floors.

PLUS :: Outdoor locations often solve decorating dilemmas by allowing the manicured landscape and/or Mother Nature do the work. EVERYWHERE ELSE .... So, whether you’re hosting an event at a zoo, water park, arboretum or planetarium, make sure the space you choose will comfortably house your guests (even if the guest count expands). Consider the venue and ask questions that will cover all of your bases. Ask about special rules and restrictions. Inquire about parking, and be sure the venue can accommodate your production, entertainment, A/V, sound and other technical needs. Asking the right questions will enable you to choose the perfect setting for your perfect event.

REHEARSAL DINNER & PRIVATE DINING GUIDE

The ins and outs of

REHEARSAL DINNERS

and private dining parties A private dinner is a chance for people to gather and get to know each other better and have a shared experience. Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, a birthday party or a corporate function, if you have a certain look and price point in mind, chances are you can find a restaurant that will suit your needs. Most have experience hosting small to large functions, so planning is relatively painless. Hosting a dinner at a restaurant ensures that your guests will enjoy excellent fare, since good food is their specialty. Plus, they are already fully decorated, allowing for added pizzazz that may be lacking in another venue type’s more basic décor. If you’re foodies, a restaurant can be a place that is as adventurous with its cuisine as you are. These days your personality or that of your business can be reflected in the setting. However, keep in mind that with restaurants, the good food can come with space limitations. Remember that if your group size doesn’t warrant renting the entire place, you may be seated close to regular patrons, which can mean less privacy. Semi-private dining – or dining that is not closed off – can mean that noise and passersby will be out of your control. “At a baseline, you want a restaurant with enough space for your guests to feel comfortable,” said Jennifer Boozer, Director of Marketing for Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, which owns twelve restaurants and private event spaces. Private dinners are the first time a lot of people get to meet each other,” said Boozer. “You want an easy environment for people to talk with each other. So, be sure to ask if the space will be quiet.” If needed, make sure that the establishment you choose is equipped with AV gear that can support slideshows, speeches, toasting, roasting and/or

announcements so that your entire crowd can easily see and hear. If they do not have the necessary equipment, confirm that they will allow you to bring in your own and that the electrical outlets can support the equipment you bring in.

SEAR at ATLANTA MARRIOTT MARQUIS

Depending on the size of your dinner, it may be helpful to set a pre-determined menu. If you have a smaller group, you could work with the restaurant to provide more choices for your guests. And don’t forget the little touches that make every event unique. Although private dinners tend to be smaller in size, you can still incorporate little details with big impact like centerpieces, tags on gift items, custom napkins and even place cards. Escort cards are often used at large events because they let guests know where they will be seated. In the same way, place cards are an excellent detail for smaller dinners. There are so many opportunities to make a private restaurant experience your own unique creation. Determining your particular needs will enable you to find the perfect place to throw your next party. Whether you choose a quaint bistro or a larger eatery for your event, remember that throwing a private dinner is your chance to make a meal into a memorable experience.

TIP :: Don’t forget the details. Place cards are an excellent detail for smaller dinner parties.

Online Exclusive Katrina’s planner, Michelle Gainey of Lemiga Events outlines all the etiquette, planning and over “how-to’s” you need to know when planning your own Par-ception. More online>> www.OccasionsOnlline.com SEARCH: ‘Par-ception’

KATRINA + KEINON

real wedding

A

nyone who has met them knows that Keinon and Katrina Johnson love to have fun, and their September wedding was no exception. After dating for seven and a half years, the music industry insiders (she works for a local radio station, he for a record label) got engaged at one of their weekend favorites: a diner near their College Park home. When Keinon surprised Katrina with a gorgeous ring, she said she was so excited she can barely remember anything except crying, saying ‘yes’ and high-fiving the man of her dreams. The two immediately began planning the wedding. The number one objective: making sure this wedding would be fun, a real celebration for them and all of the guests they wanted to include. Knowing that their guest list of 260 would make some of the things she wanted cost-prohibitive, Katrina hatched a genius plan: don’t have a typical reception, have a “par-ception.” If the reception is more like a party, she reasoned, more of their friends would be able to join them in celebrating. As it turned out, she was right.

Theme

Throughout the night, guests were reminded that if one K (Katrina or Keinon) is fun, K2 must be double the fun! The bride and groom used the play of their first names beginning with the same letter to create the K2 logo. It first appeared on their invitations and stamps for their invitations, and was carried throughout the night on their ceremony program and menu card. A gobo light from One Stop Productions also projected the logo onto a wall on the rooftop once the par-ception was underway.

Decor

Savage Garden crafted unbelievable floral arrangements that were suspended in the center of the huge windows overlooking the city, as well as over the bar, entrance and sweetheart table. The breathtaking arrangements managed to enhance, rather than detract, from the magnificent views. Modern, minimalistic centerpieces dotted the lounge tables throughout the venue, while intricate lighting from One Stop Productions kept the nightclub atmosphere going. “It was such a great mix and flow of small and large vases, flowers and branches. It was very cleverly placed and artistic, it was truly like works of art,” Gainey said. “It was perfect for a modern couple like this.”

On September 25, 2010, one hundred of their closest friends and family members joined together to watch Katrina walk down the aisle for their rooftop marriage ceremony at Ventanas. Katrina was a vision in her ivory Priscilla of Boston gown with a dramatic purple sash fastened with a brooch. Following the ceremony, guests moved inside, to the top floor of Ventanas, where they enjoyed passed hors d’ouevres and the sounds of both jazz and modern hits from a friend’s band. After utilizing the site’s helipad for some quick portraits, the newlyweds rejoined their guests for a sit-down dinner featuring a choice of filet mignon, brown sugar and soy glazed salmon or thyme roasted chicken, provided by Endive. Katrina and Keinon were thrilled with the selections, describing all the food that evening as “stunning and amazing.”

At 8 p.m., the “par-ception” began, with an additional 160 guests arriving at Ventanas. Photos of the wedding ceremony, taken just hours before, were projected onto the walls to share the experience with the new guests. The modern venue was decked out in the couple’s wedding colors of purple, silver and white, and looked like an upscale nightclub. Many of the traditional reception elements were incorporated into the par-ception, including the introduction of the bride and groom, their first dance and cutting the delicious cake from Sweet Sensations. “It’s a unique way to have the big party and still have the intimate, served dinner,” planner Michelle Gainey of Lemiga Events said. “They didn’t want to exclude their friends, so this gave them a way to celebrate with family the way they wanted and also with friends.” Ventanas, Gainey explained, was the perfect venue for their unique par-ception. They maximized the space by using each section as the evening progressed. The ceremony rooftop space was transformed into a lounge and bar area while guests ate dinner on Ventanas’ second floor. When more guests arrived at 8p.m., they found the first floor decked out for a party with lounge furniture, a dance floor and bars. The couple’s custom logo which appeared on nearly all the event elements also appeared on favors that the guests took home, twin candles, one peach scented, in a nod to the bride’s Georgia roots, and one with a more modern scent, in honor of the groom’s hometown of NYC. In fact, Gainey said, that North/South contrast was another slight theme throughout the night. “He’s from New York, and she has more Southern flair, so we blended the dichotomies of the North and South all night,” she said. Aside from the candles, guests may have also noticed this with the mix of hors d’oeuvres that were served continuously throughout the night. Guests snacked on turkey bacon wrapped skewers of BBQ shrimp, duck confit and caramelized onion pizzas and petit potatoes filled with asiago and chive soufflé, among other bites. When they weren’t snacking, guests spent most of their time on the dance floor, which remained packed all night long. “It wasn’t a normal wedding DJ,” Gainey said. Putting their industry connections to work, the bride and groom had secured DJ Mars for their par-ception, a well-known DJ famous for touring with stars like Ciara and Neyo. “No one sat down the whole time,” said Katrina. “They had to kick us out! Everyone was dancing and there was such a beautiful energy in the air. We couldn’t have made the night any better.” Gainey agreed. “They are such a fun couple, and their wedding reflected that,” she said. “They are the perfect example of throwing out the book and having a wedding that’s all about them!”

From the Bride...

“I really wanted it to be modern with a splash of tradition, but also wanted it to be sexy.” She and Lemiga Events brought that vision to life with creative floral and lighting designs, as well as memorable personal touches.

TEENA PATEL

real birthday party

T

urning sixteen opens many doors for a young lady...unfortunately, it does not open the doors to most nightclubs. And so, when Teena Bianca Patel turned sweet sixteen, her parents Ragini and Yogesh threw her the kind of party she dreamed of, creating a signature nightclub and lounge. On the night of her August 21, 2010 event, the W Hotel Perimeter was the hottest club in town for her 150 guests. Teena’s mother, Ragini Patel owns the acclaimed design and decor company Weddings InStyle. That she would plan and design her daughter’s birthday party was a foregone conclusion; that it would be fabulous was a given. Ragini started with the event space at the W, and crafted a contemporary club replete with touches of girly glamor. As they entered, club patrons signed a picture guest book that Teena had created for the occasion. The talented birthday girl also designed her own dress for the event.

Decor

Pink was the color of the night. Lighting and lounge seating created a club-like space, and Ragini brought on the girly glamour with enhancements like crystal candelabras, hot pink phaleonopsis orchids and other flowers in shades of pink, as well as elaborately bejeweled and styled mannequins. Edible pink and silver glitter bonbons lent a bit of bling to each table.

Entertainment

When Teena’s friends arrived after being transported in the Atlanta Party Bus, they were granted access to the most exclusive club in town, featuring DJ Kumar of POHP. The DJ kept the dance floor rocking from start to finish, just like the birthday girl requested.

Cake & Dessert

An elaborate dessert bar featuring tortes, tarts, brownies, cookies, eclairs, truffles, cannolis, mousse cups and birthday cake fed those with a sweet tooth. The cake, from Cakes by Caryn, was a whimsical, jeweled creation with a cake rhinestone tiara on top that Teena had helped design. In keeping with the club theme, a Lady Gaga impersonator staffed the candy bar.

For dinner, guests helped themselves to innovative food from a variety of stations, including Indian food, fusion Indo-Chinese, and a kebab station. The presentation of the Indo-Chinese food was a hit, as the Chinese takeout containers with chopsticks and fortune cookies delighted the guests. A slider and made-to-order pomme frites station was also popular. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed watching a slide show of Teena growing up, as well as watching the birthday girl and three friends perform a dance routine. The dance floor never emptied and Teena was very happy with her signature club, only wishing that the party could continue! As the night finally came to a close, Teena’s friends left very happy, with favors (Ed Hardy dog tags for the boys and rhinestone bracelets for the girls) presented in jeweled boxes that matched the invitations.

s an interior designer, Laurie Burns pays special attention to detail, a quality that helped immensely as she planned her own November wedding to childhood sweetheart Greg Burns. Laurie and Greg share a history that goes all the way back to a school dance date in the seventh grade. Attending different high schools led the two to grow apart until they met again through a mutual friend in 2003. This time, the relationship stuck, and the couple dated for the next six years. In March 2010, Greg took Laurie for a walk through the Atlanta Botanical Garden, something they did frequently on weekend mornings. She didn’t have a clue that he was about to propose until he went down on one knee and removed the ring from a Moroccan lantern a close friend had been surreptitiously guarding. Laurie said yes, and the planning process began. Laurie had always loved visiting the Fox Theatre, and quickly decided that it would be just right for their

When designer Amy Osaba saw the lantern Greg had used in his proposal, she suggested purchasing more and using them in the tabletop decor. Laurie loved the sentiment the lantern embodied and selected ivory and bronze linens, along with gold chargers and gold rimmed ivory china to accent their display. A Moroccan fountain with floating candles completed the look.

The ceremony took place on the terrace, and Laurie and Greg were blown away by the hundreds of candles and thousands of rose petals that carpeted their aisle. Following the ceremony, the 175 guests snacked on crab cakes and baked brie tartlets from caterer Affairs to Remember during a cocktail hour on the terrace before entering the Fox’s ballroom. The bride and groom spent their wedding night at the Hotel Palomar, before moving cross-country to Santa Monica, CA, the next week. Living five blocks from the beach, Laurie said, has felt like a honeymoon, though they’re also planning a trip to Hong Kong and Bali later this year.

DANIELLE WEST-LANE

D

anielle West-Lane and her husband Bernard Lane are patiently awaiting the birth of their second child, a daughter to be named Chloe Danielle. When Danielle was pregnant with her son, her baby shower was a huge backyard bbq bash. This time around, her brother Scoobie West thought she deserved something utterly feminine. He enlisted the help of a former Delta Sigma Theta sister of Danielle’s, and the two worked together to plan an ultra girly celebration fit for a queen on September 25, 2010 at StudioWed. For this occasion, Scoobie was after a decadent look, with tables covered in silk table linens, china and crystal. I Do Linens, Event Rentals Unlimited and Aesthetic Floral & Event Artistry helped him achieve his goal. Private chef James McPherson whipped up a feast for the mommyto-be and her 30 guests, serving turkey tetrazzini, chicken alfredo, she crab dip, a selection of fresh fruit and two different types of pan-seared shrimp.

Decor

Scoobie based the party’s color scheme on a dress their maternal grandmother, Madear, had given Danielle when she was a child. The dress was a unique shade of pink/ purple, a color they tried to use throughout the party.

Dessert

The Cake Closet’s Aisha Cheeks created a dessert buffet to die for, including a dual flavored cake (red velvet on the bottom and lemon cake on the top), chocolate cupcakes, sugar cookies and brownie pops.

Create their own “beach” wedding in her parents’ Dunwoody backyard, of course! With the help of Toast Events planner Lindsay Pitt, they did just that for their June 12, 2010 nuptials. Though the sand was missing, the fun, carefree atmosphere of a beach vacation was in full effect, just as the bride and groom intended. The beach atmosphere began long before the wedding, when Austin surprised Joslyn with a proposal while vacationing with her family at their summer home in Bay Head, NJ.

Theme

Joslyn and Austin’s beach wedding theme was carried out in all the divine details. Palm trees, sand dollars, star fish and seashells were found in their invitations, centerpieces, and party favors. They opted for a cool color combination of soft blue and khaki tones.

On a beautiful Saturday in June, the wedding day began with a traditional Catholic ceremony at All Saints Church. The bride was glowing with happiness in a strapless, ivory lace gown by MoriLee. The structure was draped throughout, illuminated with soft blue uplighting and a custom gobo that lit up the white dance floor. The tent turned ballroom was cooled to the perfect temperature as it was 90 degrees on the day of the wedding! heri and Ron Weiner were very proud of their daughter, Dana, for completing a rigorous series of 13 Mitzvot during the year of her bat mitzvah. Dana worked diligently to complete mitzvot in three categories: Avodah (worship), Torah (study), and G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness), taking part in acts like fasting on Yom Kippur, watching Fiddler on the Roof with her family and volunteering at a local shelter. After learning a lot about herself and her faith, it was time to celebrate with close friends and family members, including her brother, Eli, and sister, Kate. On April 24, 2010, the Weiner family hosted 250 guests at Dana’s bat mitzvah celebration at The Westin Buckhead. Kelli’s Paper and Gifts helped craft two different invitations for the invited children and adults, both featuring hot pink ink. arissa and Brant Stephens’ October 2010 wedding was a shining example of Southern charm. The high-school sweethearts got together their senior year and dated throughout college, until Brant asked Marissa to spend the rest of her life as his wife. She happily accepted and the couple celebrated their marriage with 150 guests at the Thompson House and Gardens in Bogart, GA. As the bride walked down the aisle to the sounds of a string quartet playing Beauty and the Beast’s “Tale as Old as Time” and James Blunt’s “You Are Beautiful,” guests were wowed by the contrast between her lovely gown and the seasonal beauty of colorful orange and fuchsia roses. Marissa wanted a Fall themed wedding with Southern and Victorian charm, which led her to chose the antebellum venue for her big day. Centerpieces crafted by Flowers By On included Victorian teapots and pearls amongst the vibrantly hued roses, all set on beautiful lace. To carry the signature color throughout the event, the bridesmaids all wore fuchsia dresses and shawls, while the bride looked radiant in a strapless, ivory gown with ruching and flower details, topped off by a veil and tiara. hris and Katie Torres were thrilled to celebrate their daughter Rosemary’s first birthday on December 5, 2010 with an adorable vintage themed party. Though Rosemary herself surely appreciated the smiles and birthday cake more than the decor, Katie put together a gorgeous at-home event filled with pinwheels and vintage details. She wanted to create an atmosphere of celebration without any character theme, and found inspiration shopping on sites like Etsy. Rather than being character based or designed around a specific themed party, Katie wanted just a simple party for a little girl where the emphasis would be on the celebration of their first child. Katie says, “I just wanted it to be a sweet celebration of the incredible love that has multiplied in our family over the last year. It wasn’t just a celebration of her first year it was a celebration of our family turning one as well.” Guests were invited to fill out memory cards that Katie had personally letterpressed. These cards gave friends and family a place to share their favorite memories of Rosemary from the past year and will provide a fabulous memento as Chris and Katie look back on their daughter’s first birthday in the future.

In true DIY fashion, Katie crafted all the party’s details except for the flower arrangements, for which she turned to Darryl Wiseman Flowers. To enhance the theme, Katie sewed vintage fabric garland and even made Rosemary’s baby doll a blanket out of the same fabric.

Later on, guests had their choice of seven different cupcake flavors including pumpkin, Guinness, mint chocolate chip or turtle from Miss Mamie’s, as well as a chocolate wedding cake. As the perfect evening came to a close, Laurie and Kevin were thrilled to have been able to share their Atlanta lifestyle with all their guests before being whisked off to The Mansion on Peachtree in a replica 1950’s classic Porsche. By the time she reached out to Toast Events for help planning the party, which was to be a surprise, she had already assembled a guest list of 400, many of them among Atlanta’s who’s who society. In Ivy Oxendine’s hands, however, what could have been a staid affair took on an energy of its own, becoming, as she described it, “Not Your Granddaddy’s Retirement Celebration.” The bars were decorated with burlap skirting and floral arrangements from Robert Long Floral Design and included both elegant white orchids & simple wheat. The rough hewn farm tables that Ivy had loved from the beginning were surrounded by gold chiavari chairs, further emphasizing the farm chic look. Many of John’s favorite things were incorporated throughout the evening, including a Malbec at the bar and having the bartenders craft drinks from his favorite martini recipe from Katsua in Los Angeles. Banks and Shane kept guests entertained with southern rock and country tunes while a running slideshow that highlighted key points from John’s career played. outhern Tree Plantation in the mountains of Blairsville, GA, is the perfect wedding venue for a down-to-earth, outdoorsy couple. Emily and Wes Daniel found it to be just right for their country-chic October wedding. The couple held their ceremony on a hill overlooking the north Georgia mountains and a small country road, where their fathers and a family friend performed the wedding to the sounds of a string quartet. Emily and Wes wrote their own vows, and their fathers shared stories of their childhoods with guests as seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen looked on. The newlyweds then invited their 150 guests into an old restored barn with lights hung from the rafters of the incredibly high ceiling for the reception. Emily filled the space with subtle, simple and classy decor designed to highlight the natural beauty of the space, like mason jars filled with freshly picked flowers from Adrianna’s Interiors and centerpiece bases crafted from a tree cut from the bride’s family’s backyard. Southern Tree Plantation catered the event, and the red velvet and vanilla cake was homemade by a family friend. ELLYB EVENTS real customer appreciation party

T

here’s this thing in an event professional’s blood that makes throwing parties something of a regular occasion. For Eliana Baucicault of ellyb Events, 2010 was a big year and to show appreciation for her clients, both past, present and even future, she partnered with some of her favorite wedding vendors and hosted the ultimate appreciation event at Bradford Gallery the night before Valentine’s Day. Using the colors of the ellyb Events brand, she and her team worked to transform the blank event space into a color modern setting that a client might expect to see at their own event. Proof of the Pudding and Endive Catering provided a delectable array of interactive catering stations and dessert gurus Couture Cakes, Dreamy Gelato and Chocolates and Candy Cake Company created a sweet shop environment for party patrons with a sweet tooth. Belly dancers worked the room to encourage guests to dance the night away. For guests who don’t particularly enjoy the dance floor, the cigar lounge was the place to be. The event surely showed the love to clients of all the participating event vendors and everyone had a blast.

MEREDITH GALANTI

real bat mitzvah

M

eredith Galanti’s November 2010 bat mitzvah had a theme as effervescent as Meredith herself. The energetic teen’s personality can be described as fun, colorful and whimsical, and those were the attributes that also defined her bat mitzvah celebration that Your Party by Karen worked so closely with Meredith’s parents, Charlene and Irwin, to achieve. Decor included Meredith’s favorite colors of pink, lime and chocolate brown and helped accentuate the fun and whimsical feel. Meredith loved the set-up and was thrilled when she first saw the ballroom decorated in all her favorite colors. To kick off the evening of dinner and dancing, guests enjoyed a variety of passed and station hors d’ouevres. While sushi was a hit for all ages, the kids also snacked on mac and cheese balls, while the adults sampled hot-passed canapés and a delicious Mediterranean station. For dessert, all guests reveled in decadent homemade S’mores, served alongside a variety of tempting cakes, pies, and peach cobbler. Of course, after such a high energy evening, The Galantis anticipated that guests might need a little sugar-filled treat as a pick-me-up before heading home, and thoughtfully provided to-go boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts and milk.

NATALIE + BRANFORD

real wedding

N

atalie and Branford were married on May 22, 2010. Their wedding was just as any Georgia native couple would envision: sweet and southern to the core. On a spring night in May, the couple exchanged vows at St. Paul Church. The Bride wore an ivory French Alencon lace Monique Lhuillier gown with her mother’s cathedral length veil, and carried a bouquet of ivory peonies and pink roses tied with a French lace handkerchief that belonged to Branford’s late grandmother. Afterwards guests were invited to the home of Natalie’s parents for an extravagant tented reception where Epting Events had brought the outside in and filled the space with floral sprays of peonies, roses, hydrangeas and calla lilies in soft shades of pink and ivory. Guests dined on a southern menu of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens and homemade peach cobbler. Rhythm Nation played a great mix of Motown, beach music, oldies, and current music and brought lots of energy to the reception. As a parting favor, guests snacked on old-fashioned pecan pralines packaged and sealed with a custom monogrammed sticker.

HALEY & SAMANTHA HASEN

I

real b'nei mitzvah

n a New York state of mind, Phylliss Hasen threw her daughters Haley and Samantha an urban graffiti themed b’nei mitzvah. The November 6, 2010 event was attended by 150 friends and family members and took place at the galleries of the King Plow Center. Christina Zubowicz of Magnolia Events and Steve Bales of Bold American Event Design coordinated the details and crafted a New York style urban art zone in the midst of Atlanta. The space was covered with chain link fences and specially erected walls. Throughout the night, on-site graffiti artists were hard at work transforming those walls into their own works of art. DJ Philly from Vibe Entertainment Inc created just the right high energy atmosphere the urban landscape required. When they took a break from the dance floor, guests visited a fun photobooth to have some souvenir shots taken, courtesy of Smilebooth, or scored some of their own artwork, via temporary tattoos from two airbrush tattoo artists. In keeping with the urban theme, Haley and Samantha’s guests left with new basketballs and sweats, while adult guests took home cookies from Flour Shoppe Milk.

THE BLUISH HAZE IS SO VIBRANT IN THIS NECK OF THE WOODS THAT THE LANDSCAPE LOOKS AS IF IT’S BEEN PAINTED BY SMURFS. IT’S A TRULY MARVELOUS SIGHT TO BEHOLD. NOW, IMAGINE THAT ALREADY-MAJESTIC CANVAS WITH THICK, VIBRANT GREENERY, MEANDERING STREAMS AND WILD DEER SPECKLED ABOUT. THAT’S THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS,

AND THE SNAPSHOT OF PARADISE IS ONLY A 90-MINUTE DRIVE FROM ATLANTA.

A

few things are thought to come standard with honeymoons: an intimate setting, tasty food and some fun outdoor activities. Intricate lessons in botanical sciences, however, aren’t on most itineraries. But when newlyweds venture into North Georgia’s magical Blue Ridge Mountains, that’s precisely what they get on top of all the usual vacation goodies. An isoprene is an organic compound some trees release into the atmosphere. That’s the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the snapshot of paradise is only a 90-minute drive from Atlanta. In-the-know city slickers have adored these mountains for decades. Some come up for the views. Others come for the fishing and the great antiquing. And with thousands of rental cabins and vacation homes readily available, many choose not to go home. Why would they? There are spaces for groups, scout troops and your everyday, hard-working couple who just needs to recoup from the bustle of the city. For Mountain Top Cabin Rentals, it’s newlyweds who get the royal treatment. Like wedding coordinators with an affinity for bait and tackle over bridal cake and Tiffany’s, Mountain Top can set you up

with a getaway that’s super relaxing or one that requires a life vest. From start to finish, your wish is their wood-scented command. Just by nature, cabins and canoodling go hand in hand. Cozy fireplaces. Rocking chairs. S’mores by the fire pit. It’s all just so darn inviting. Mountain Top’s numerous properties are no exception. Numbers like the “Just the Two of Us” cabin are charming chalets. “Absolutely Fab-View-Us” offers jawdropping sunrises. Still, it’s the precious “Sadbe” that may prove the most magical out of the whole lot. Three stories of cedar-planked luxury await in this rental. There are three bedrooms and three baths. It has a pool table and hot tub too. And on top of all of that, the wraparound porch offers all the isoprene your eyes can stand. You’ll come for a five-day honeymoon. You’ll want to stay until the seasons change. But do you recall how we said Mountain Top knew how to charm the wooly socks off newlyweds? We weren’t merely talking about the romantic views or bottles of chilled Moscato in the kitchen. The company also has two friends with very distinct skills—massages and cooking. TeaTrees Boutique Spa handles the former. For $95 a person, the Blue Ridge-based outfit will send two masseuses to your cabin, transform your temporary home into a woodsy oasis and give you a 50-minute rubdown you never knew could happen at a 4,000-feet altitude.

While you're in town try... Moutain Top Cabin Rentals www.mountaintopcabinrentals.com TeaTrees Spa www.teatreesmassage.com Cabin Cuisine www.cabincuisine.com L & L Beanery 706.632.3242

After that revitalizing experience, you can have Cabin Cuisine’s Chef Douglas complete the evening with a scrumptious, in-cabin meal. A master of precision in front of the stove, Chef Douglas has wowed North Georgia’s taste buds for over eight years. No matter your tastes or dietary concerns, he can skew the menu to your palate. Dinners are four-course masterpieces that revolve around steaks, seafood and poultry, and range in cost from $65 to $95. For $55 a guest, he can prepare a flavor-bursting brunch of frittata, sausages, French toast, potatoes, freshly-squeezed juice and homemade desserts. As tempting as Cabin Cuisine and TeaTrees Spa make it all sound though, lovebirds cannot fully experience the Blue Ridge Mountains from their cabin alone. What Fannin County and surrounding areas lack in size, they more than make up for in hiking and bargain hunting. The area’s vast outdoor activities (horseback riding, canoeing and trout fishing in the Toccoa River) and quaint downtown shopping (High Country Art and Antiques, Multitudes) are almost as famous as its postcard-perfect landscapes, and should be explored. Of course, when you’ve completed all of these activities, you’ll need to replenish. L & L Beanery is a cute café that prepares breakfast and light lunch fare. Harvest on Main is more upscale in its appearance and its commitment to sustainable eating. The Blue Orleans Bistro sits somewhere comfortably in between. The menu is Cajun. The shrimp etouffee is exquisite. The live entertainment on Saturdays is a treat. But that’s sort of the feeling you get at every turn up in these parts. Be it the music, the munchies, the massages or the magical views, the Blue Ridge Mountains simply feel like a big, warm hug. And when it comes to planning an affordable honeymoon escape, doesn’t it just make good sense to go somewhere you know you’ll feel loved? - Demarco Williams
