It took nearly three decades of friendship for this lovely bride and groom to come to the same understanding. Simply put, these two were meant to be. “He attempted a few times to date me over the years but I always shied away from it and said ‘But you are such a good friend,’” evokes Dawnyale, laughing. The couple remained pals throughout school, including college, and kept in touch over the years as they moved out of state to build their careers. Fred continued to be a part of Dawnyale’s life. As she moved to Florida to work as a speech pathologist and a professional NFL cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fred remained friends with her sister, who lived near him in Atlanta. “I had him at arm’s length for a long time,” adds Dawnyale. But when Dawnyale moved back to their hometown in 2010, she felt her heartstrings shift. “Once I moved out of the NFL world and back to Fayetteville, I reevaluated a lot of things in my life, including Fred.” This time around, she made a move, calling Fred in Atlanta to tell him she’d been thinking about him, too. “I did say, ‘Let’s work on our friendship first and see where that goes.’ Well, that lasted all of two weeks!” On Easter Sunday, Dawnyale married her childhood friend at the Sanderling Resort in picturesque Duck. With both bride and groom born and raised in North Carolina,

agreement on location wasn’t difficult. “North Carolina represents our roots, the birthplace of our friendship, and it’s just familiar ground,” Dawnyale says of the destination. “We wanted a location that had sentimental meaning and would create an ideal location for a destination wedding, without the extended amount of time and effort needed for travel.” Both families rented vacation homes on the property and incorporated personal touches to every activity. “We always wanted to do a destination wedding, but with our grandparents at an age where they don’t travel so well, we instantly knew we wanted to stay close to home.” The couple was married on the beach, in front of the Goldeneye at the Sanderling Resort and enjoyed a night of rejoicing with family in the private home. By choosing to have an intimate wedding, the couple was able to spend quality time with each of their family members, truly experience every moment and relish in the “fruit of their labor.” - Krista Gentry

Much like falling in love, planning a wedding takes time – unless you don’t have time. Eager to share their affection for nature and the stunning Outer Banks before summer’s end, Jennifer and Chris planned their wedding in just three months! Pulling a wedding of any size together in such short time is difficult. This wedding celebration, complete with a full Catholic ceremony, a 14 member bridal party and close to 100 guests, kept experienced wedding planner Nannette Kallestad of The Proper Setting on her toes. “I always send my brides a timeline to keep them on track, so things don’t get overlooked during this hectic period. We typically recap once a month to ensure the necessary tasks have been done. However, Jennifer and I spoke once a week,” explains Nannette. Other than an easygoing attitude, what should a bride with a short engagement focus on to make sure her day is a success? “Brides with short engagements should select and
focus on the three most important aspects of their wedding – not allowing themselves to get bogged down with details. In a wedding that’s only a few months away there may not be time to find the perfect this or that. Have a few top selections for each vendor, because with such short notice – especially in peak season – vendors book-up well in advance. Be flexible!” Given the number of destination weddings here on the Outer Banks, many brides can’t get here multiple times prior to their big day – particularly if it’s only a couple months away. This is the time brides must rely on the expertise of their planner to schedule meetings with potential vendors and keep the timeline moving forward. Luckily, today’s bride has social media sites at her fingertips. Over the course of the planning process, Jennifer sent a steady flow of emails with images and links to Nannette, after which Nannette researched these ideas and found the best way to make these visions a reality.

With Jennifer and Chris, Nannette scheduled a marathon planning weekend, “What most brides do over the course of several months, we did in one jam-packed weekend,” said Nannette. “We met with four cake decorators, two photographers, two floral designers, two caterers, and countless others that weekend – even completing a hairstyle trial! It was a whirlwind, but we made it happen.” Sometimes love doesn’t take years to develop, it happens in a moment, and if you can’t wait to

On May 3, 2012, in the sky above southern Nags Head, a just-released group of white doves mirrored the soaring hearts of two newlyweds, their family and friends gathered under a lacy veil of fog on the beach below. Months later, Brad and Shana Baldwin Thompson of Bethesda, Maryland, winners of the 2012 Dream Wedding Giveaway, were still overwhelmed by the support they received from loved ones, community volunteers and the many vendors who donated time and services to make their wedding a dream come true. When David Tutera, of We-TV’s My Fair Wedding with David Tutera, had randomly drawn Shana’s name from hundreds at the annual wedding expo last January, his advice to her had been, “It’s your day. Tell your story.” And, according to Shana, the dedicated experts of the OBWA Dream Team wove every detail of her wedding day into an event that told the real-life fairy tale of Shana and her groom. “All the vendors listened to my ideas and were flexible throughout

the entire planning process, so our actual wedding day really felt like us,” she remembers. “It was still our dream and not a dream someone else put together for us. The ambience of being on the beach, surrounded by so many of our loved ones in such a beautiful setting, made it so special. To have the gift of all these details we might not have had without the giveaway just made it that much more special.” The ceremony itself was Shana and Brad’s top priority as they began the planning process last winter and the Dream Team helped them to create a traditional ceremony far surpassing the one they’d envisioned. The Nags Head Volunteer Fire Department volunteered to drive Shana’s elderly grandparents onto the beach for the ceremony. Officiant Bonnie Williams soothed the wedding couple’s nerves and put the attendants and guests at ease with her easy, professional manner. The gauzy, capiz-adorned wedding canopy, clinking softly in the breeze, provided the perfect backdrop – and background “music” – for the exchange of vows and rings. Even the Outer Banks fog, which hung lightly over the beach throughout most of the day, had

contributed to the mystical atmosphere, parting just as Shana started down the aisle. And finally, the doves. A bird that symbolizes love and faithfulness because they mate for life. At the conclusion of their ceremony, Brad and Shana released two white doves, then a few more were released to join the others in the coastal sky. “I would’ve never thought to have doves at our wedding, but I’m so glad they were a part of our day,” says Shana. “It was such an awesome and memorable experience for our family and friends.” Wedding planner Rachel Moser, of 11th Hour Events, spearheaded the Dream Team’s efforts to translate Brad and Shana’s $45,000 wedding giveaway into their dream-come-true. She explains that Brad and Shana’s desire for a more casual, intimate wedding, rather than an upscale, extravagant one, made them perfect recipients for the Dream Wedding Giveaway. Shana, like most of Moser’s clients, had fond childhood memories of family vacations spent on North Carolina’s coast. “I remember fishing, finding sand dollars, spending quality time with my brother,” she remembers. “A beach wedding was a perfect way to bring all those experiences full circle.” Moser said she talks to many couples who express similar sentiments, but think they can’t manage or afford a destination wedding. “People often think a beach wedding is way more expensive than it actually is,” she explains. “One advantage of using a wedding planner is that it keeps you on track and on budget. The Outer Banks Wedding Association can find you a variety of affordable resources you probably couldn’t find on your own. The unspoiled beaches and non-commercial atmosphere on the Outer Banks are perfect for a wedding. You can have a destination wedding without going to Fiji.” Many of Shana and Brad’s friends and family spent the entire wedding week on the Outer Banks. Moser helped them make the
most of their time together by housing them in several beach houses within walking distance of each other. Another misconception Moser often encounters is that planning a beach wedding requires lots of travel. “Almost all our vendors are online, and we can handle most of the planning through email.” Shana and Brad made only two planning trips from Maryland to the Outer Banks between the expo in January and their wedding in May. During one of those “mini-vacations,” as Shana calls them, they took hang gliding lessons donated by Kitty Hawk Kites. Shana relates how they can hardly wait for a return trip so they can experience more adventures in the air. They anticipate being joined by a group of former wedding guests who’ve considered making the OBX trek an annual event. “This was an amazing opportunity, and we’re so thankful for the generosity of all the volunteers and vendors involved in the giveaway,” Shana says, naming vendor after vendor who exceeded her highest expectations. “Rachel Moser, of 11th Hour Events, is a sweetheart. She and I clicked right away. She is so sweet, calming, extremely organized. “Rich Coleman, my portrait photographer, has an amazing level of talent and enormously fast turnaround times. He helped me surprise Brad with a portrait of me in my wedding dress and eye black holding Brad’s Tennessee Volunteers football helmet. “Heather at HLR Designs helped us tell our story through all the details. For example, each table number had photographs of Brad and me at that corresponding age, along with fun facts about us. “Baldwin Video did an amazing job with our wedding day video. Benny gave us a CD full of uncut footage, and another beautifully edited 10-minute video with scenes from the entire day. We are so lucky to have those.” (continued on page 46)

It had a manatee on it inspired by one of Brad’s favorite childhood stories.” Shana explains that her dream wedding had always centered around a comfortable, intimate gathering of family and friends in a beautiful, natural setting. When Aric and Mary met on the gymnastics team at Springfield College in Pennsylvania, enthusiasm came easy. As they flipped their way through school, they quickly began to fall in love and later became engaged. As a favorite vacation spot for both close-knit families, a relaxed Outer Banks wedding made perfect sense. With the destination picked and the venue booked, Aric and Mary teamed up to plan a wedding where classic elegance met pure excitement. Rather than choosing traditional poses, they gravitated towards exciting and unique pictures and enlisted Daniel Pullen Photography to create a fun and intimate setting that would make their portraits feel as if they were as lively as the couples themselves. Upon meeting Daniel, the two told him their story and asked for some “out of the box” photos. “I think I actually saw the wheels turning inside his head!” claims Mary, laughing. “He asked us what we were comfortable with as far as tumbling, jumping, and more. Took some notes and set us free to do the rest of our scheduling.” On the day of the wedding, Aric and Mary were both so excited to head over to the beach for their exclusive shoot with their photographers, Daniel and Kate. “We knew we would have a great time and most likely be upside down a couple of times,” explains Mary. “But we never imagined how beautifully Daniel would position and capture these moments.” The photo of Aric raising his bride to the heavens became a staple. As the day carried on the couple recreated the same move again at sunset by the bay and once more during their first dance as husband and wife. “I would say it became our signature move.” As for the photos with Aric doing handstands and back flips, Daniel’s vision came to life as the group worked together to capture these irreplaceable shots. “Aric must have been upside down 10 times during this segment,” exclaims Mary, “but he loved every second of it!” In the end, their vision played out with handstands along the shore, backflips under the sun, and jumps encompassed with joy. Add a ceremony at the Inn on the Pamlico Sound and you’ve got a quintessential gymnast wedding celebrating love, family, and a laid back style. -Krista Gentry

A wedding is about gathering friends and family to witness your promise to love and cherish one another. However, sometimes it’s more. Sometimes it circles around bringing generations together and blending two cultures – vastly different but equally significant. Tae and Sarah wanted a day filled with loved ones, a big celebration on the Outer Banks. While their wedding brimmed with Outer Banks charm, it was important to pay homage to Tae’s Korean heritage throughout the day. The minute Sarah accepted Tae’s proposal, they knew they wanted to incorporate traditional American and Korean wedding traditions in their special day - wanting both families to understand the aspects of the other family’s culture. But a wedding is about the future, as much as it is about the day. Sarah and Tae want to ensure their future children embrace both cultures and feel comfortable being raised between them. Having vacationed on the Outer Banks, selecting the location was easy. Then the couple reflected on how to incorporate Korean tradition into the wedding, as well as the festivities leading up to the big day. What better way to join two cultures than through food? Tae’s mother’s church sponsored the rehearsal dinner, preparing barbecued shrimp and beef on two grills at the cottage where the bridal party was staying. Bonding over noodles, rice, kimchee and other traditional food, the couple’s closest friends and family had an evening to remember. Diverting slightly from the traditional wedding in a church, followed by the reception, Tae and Sarah blended the American and Korean traditions. “We decided to have the Korean pastor from my parent’s church perform the ceremony on the beach. While he performed the ceremony in English, we did have Korean translations in the programs for those guests with limited English,” explains Tae. Enlisting the help of their seasoned wedding planner, Nannette Kallestad of The Proper Setting, Tae and Sarah began incorporating the traditional 폐백 Pae Baek ceremony (a traditional bowing/welcoming ceremony) into their day. Guests from both sides were able to witness this moving ceremony, and learn about the Korean culture, including the throwing of dates to determine the gender of the couple’s future children. In another tribute to Tae’s Korean heritage, Sarah changed into a hanbok, a Korean dress that is worn for special occasions. She remained www.outerbanksweddingassoc.org

outfitted in the hanbok and spent much of the night celebrating, before changing back into her American dress to close out the night. While paying tribute to Tae’s Korean heritage was important to the couple, this fun-loving couple wanted their guests to experience their love of the Outer Banks. “We love good food and friends so we focused on that. We also knew that we wanted to have a destination wedding our friends would enjoy. Over the course of the weekend, we organized a deep sea fishing trip, a bonfire with s’mores, a welcome party, after party, yoga on the beach and a kite flying trip to Jockey’s Ridge,” remembers Tae. “Many of their relatives had never been barefoot in the sand, so this wedding was very much about blending families, sharing passions and experiencing new things,” explains Nannette. There is an endless way to feature or simply blend cultural traditions into the wedding festivities – from giving your caterer family recipes, aweing your guests with a dance or adorning culturally specific clothing. Marriage Laws & License Information North Carolina Law The North Carolina age requirement is 18. If you are under the age of 18, you can be married as young as age 16, only with parental consent. In order to obtain a marriage license you will need a photo ID and proof of social security. If you cannot locate your actual social security cards, you may use anything with your name and social security number on it, such as a pay stub, tax return, or insurance papers. If either person is divorced, a divorce decree is required. To be married on the Outer Banks, a marriage license can be obtained at any NC county register; you will need two witnesses at least 18 years old, in addition to your officiant, to sign your marriage license after your ceremony is complete. It is the job of your officiant to file it with the Register of Deeds in the issuing county. A marriage license will cost $60. There is no blood test or waiting period. The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue and in any county in North Carolina.
