Former HOD up for R70m From page 1 appeared in court on Tuesday with Anna-Marie Gordan, senior administration officer at the Department of Education, on charges of fraud of close to R70 million. The charges relate to a mobile classroom project dating back to February and March 2010, he said. According to Ramaloko the Department of Education issued a three-month tender for the construction of mobile classrooms at different schools across the province but after the period Gordan allegedly changed the minutes of the meeting to turn it into a six-month contract and Boshielo allegedly approved the funds for the extended period. The case was remanded to 4 November this year. Boshielo was granted bail of R5 000 and Gordan R1 000. Ramaloko said a third suspect was expected to appear soon after a warrant of arrest was issued on Tuesday. In the meantime tight crowd control on the ground as well as overhead characterised the mid-morning appearance of Malema, Kagiso Dichabe and Lesiba Gwangwa in an adjacent court room. By the time Malema showed up within the fenced-in area that was cordoned off by razor wire shortly after 10:00, close allies and party supporters have gathered in the main street and beyond for a long wait. The postponement of the case to August 2015 was requested for the respective legal representatives to be available. A growing red mass erupted when Malema emerged from court in a black suit under a black umbrella with gold imprint – seemingly a remnant from the 2014 Presidential inauguration held in position by a burly bodyguard - to

address his people. As he approached the podium at the square opposite the Police Station in the city centre echoing with the chanting of his name, Malema’s smile grew wider. Surrounding Malema on stage were members of his central and provincial command structures who formed a half-circle around him. Constantly in close proximity was EFF Limpopo Coordinator Jossey Buthane, a Legislature member and long-time ally. Also closeby throughout the proceedings was mutual friend Jacob Lebogo, out on R5 000 bail in a matter of alleged attempted murder following the recent Waterland shooting, whom Malema greeted warmly. As his address got underway supporters in the front of the crowd bellowed for the bodyguard closest to Malema to raise the umbrella for his benefit. After his speech to the roaring mass that remained in attendance despite hours in the scorching sun and participation in a night vigil on Monday, Malema was whisked away in a luxury vehicle waiting on the other side of the barbwire. But first he stopped to greet and pose for a photo with a little one on his arm, sheltered by the ever present classic umbrella. Boshielo’s arrest was welcomed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo. DA Caucus Spokesperson Stephen Mbedzi stated in a media release that the breakthrough by the Hawks gave hope to Limpopo’s people that indeed those who chose to be on the wrong side of the law would have their day.

Members of the community that rely on the services of the Post Office countrywide can expect delays in the delivery of parcels, letters and other services due to the present strike that affects all branches in South Africa. All branches throughout Limpopo and Polokwane have been affected by the labour dispute since Friday and are closed because of intimidation to non-striking personnel and for the safety of their clients. The current Post Office strike started in the East Rand on 18 August and slowly spread to other branches throughout the country. Lungile Lose, from the Communications Division of the South African Post Office said it is difficult for Post Offices to give prior notification of the hours branches will be open out of fear of violence by striking workers against clients and non-striking personnel. He added that all post offices in Polokwane have been closed since Tuesday as the first consideration at the Post Office is always the safety of customers and employees. “Post Office employees in Polokwane embarked on an unprotected strike last Friday. The employ-

ees are demanding a salary increase as well as the permanent appointment of temporary postal workers,” Lose said in a press statement released yesterday (Wednesday). Meanwhile direct marketing companies and those businesses that heavily rely on the services of the Post Office continue to bear the brunt of the strike. This affects especially advertising campaigns by insurance companies, retailers and banks that utilise the services of bulk mailing houses that print, label and process such material on behalf of clients and to Post Office specifications. In order to cater for bulk mailing houses the Post Office has asked these companies to bring their post as early as possible before striking workers arrive as that is when the disruptions start. Individuals utilising the Post Office to send letters or parcels are also experiencing long delays for mail to arrive since the strike started more than a month ago. Lose explained that customers in Limpopo will find that mail from Gauteng is delayed. Customers are requested to send an e-mail to customerservices@postoffice.co.za to enquire about mail items. They should include a tracking number with their enquiry.

“We should look at the possibility of getting a white judge. White judges don’t get easily bored. Judges who think Jacob Zuma is a permanent leader, should think again. Zuma is going down.” This was cited by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander-In-Chief (CIC) Julius Malema in an address to scores of supporters on Tuesday after he appeared in the Polokwane High Court alongside co-accused Lesiba Gwangwa and Kagiso Dichabe on charges of fraud, money laundering and racketeering relating to a tender worth R52 million allegedly awarded by the then Department of Roads and Transport to On-Point Engineering Company co-owned by Malema’s Ratanang Family Trust. On Tuesday the case was postponed and set for trial from 3 August 2015 until 10 September 2015. After emerging from court he addressed a red mass of supporters who braved the sun and lack of sleep after participating in a night vigil ahead of his appearance. Turning to the case against him he said: “I would prefer to be separated and trialled alone. I urged the state to consider a separate trial in order to close the case against me. I have nothing to fear. During earlier discussions regarding the separation the state indicated that there is no earlier date which will result in a combined trial,” Malema said, referring to former co-accused Selby Manthata, his wife Helen Moreroa and his brother Mokgetsi Manthata who were trialled separately and all charges against them withdrawn in the Moko-

pane Regional Court earlier this year. He further said: “The state was eager to agree on postponing the case because they know they have no case against me. If they had enough evidence and a strong case against me, why did they not ask the court to continue with the trial? If one destroys the judiciary system, one destroys the last hope for South Africans. The possibility of an unfair trial is very high.” In his spirited speech Malema, who was introduced as the president-in-waiting of the Republic, started off with the usual revolutionary songs and chants, referred to the masses being able to see through conspiracy, persecution and a political agenda that sought to undermine the leadership of the revolution. “We are grateful that you continue to expose the ruling party for what it is.” Speaking in his general no-nonsense manner he said it was his ambition to show people that there was life outside the African National Congress (ANC), Malema said and added that he lived to prove and see the EFF as testimony to that. The ruling party was no longer the leader of society, he continued. They wanted to show to society that the ANC has become irrelevant, he stated. Malema further shared the opinion that intellectually and politically the ANC did not lead any form of discussion in South Africa. He reckoned the ANC was at the weakest point in its history, both in terms of political leadership and ideas. “The EFF therefore comes in as that alternative to fill in the vacuum because nature does not allow a vacuum. There is a political leadership crisis in the country and therefore we must provide that leadership.”

remier Stan Mathabatha has, in addition to a promise made during his State of the Province address in June to buy 50 new ambulances for the province, committed the province to procuring an additional 50 ambulances in the next financial year. Mathabatha and Health MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe on Friday, during an event at the University of Limpopo (UL), accepted the first 13 of the initial consignment. Mathabatha said a supplementary consignment of 10 ambulances should arrive within the next two weeks and the remaining 27 will be delivered by the end of December this year. “Today we are here to breathe life into the commitment President Jacob Zuma, in his State of the Nation address, made. These ambulances will be shared proportionally in accordance with demand,” Mathabatha said, add-

Ambulances bring relief for the province ing that the delivery of the vehicles no doubt comes as a welcome relief to Kgetjepe and the Limpopo Emergency Medical Services (EMS). “With these ambulances more lives will be saved. I also wish to challenge those in whose care these ambulances will be to use them only for their intended purpose. We do not want to read about these vehicles being used to fetch kids from school. I know however that I we can always count on our friends in the media in case the vehicles are being abused,” he said. Mathabatha referred to his State of the Province address in June where he reaffirmed his commitment of the provisioning of a comprehensive health service that promotes good health, prevent illness and provide care and rehabilitative services to the ill and people with

disabilities. “We said then that ‘we are working in partnership with the national government to ensure the successful implementation of the National Health Insurance Plan. This will help us to strengthen and expand our free primary health care programme, improve management of public hospitals, and reduce the costs of private health care,” he said and added that he also announced that they have developed a Public Health Turnaround Strategy to be implemented immediately. “To that effect I announce that we had set aside no less than R145 million to purchase and repair critical equipment for all our hospitals in need. It is our firm belief that this Turnaround Strategy will go a long way in improving the conditions of our health facili-

ties and ensuring universal access to primary healthcare services,” Mathabatha said. Responding to the issue of the shortage of doctors in the province’s hospitals, Mathabatha said the government is sending no less than 110 medical students to Cuba in this financial year. “Exactly less than 10 days ago we were in a send-off ceremony for 110 medical students to Cuba. We are not just speaking, we are implementing. When Zuma announced in his State of the Nation Address that ‘by January next year, the first intake of medical students will be enrolled at a new medical school at the UL, I, on behalf of our Provincial Government announced that we will be offering bursaries to this first intake of medical students,” Mathabatha concluded.

Malema support base makes more headlines

>> Legislature member emerges as suspect in matter of assault >> Complainant allegedly beaten, assaulted with booted feet, hit over head with empty beer bottle YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com The support base of Economic Freedom Fighters Commander-in-Chief (EFF CIC) Julius Malema seemingly continues to claim headlines as one of his allies, also a member of the Legislature, emerged as a suspect in a matter of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm allegedly occurring during a gathering of a sub-region of the party in Mahwelereng at Mokopane on Sunday. According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto no arrest had been made as yet. She said the incident occurred at Nonchumudi Primary School in Mahwelereng’s Zone 1 on Sunday at around 12:30 and was reported to the Mahwelereng Police Station at 18:00 the same day. She explained the complainant alleged that the suspect instructed him to leave the meeting as he was not a member of the Mogalakwena sub-region of the party. An argument apparently ensued and the complainant was allegedly beaten, assaulted with booted feet and hit over the head with an empty beer bottle, Otto added. Most recently one of Malema’s other friends, Jacob Lebogo, made a court appearance in a case of attempted murder after the shooting incident at Waterland during which African National Congress (ANC) Milo Malatjie Branch Chairperson Boy Mamabolo and three others were allegedly injured. Lebogo was granted bail of R5 000 and the case was postponed to a date in mid-November.

Local businessperson rewards brave employees Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za The Management of 7 Eleven in Marshall Street rewarded two of its employees and gave recognition to the unselfish and brave way in which they acted to save the lives of others. Stephina Machebe and Easter Phaleng were given Certificates of Valour for rescuing learners who were involved in a car accident at the intersection of Dorp and Marshall streets on 24 July. On the day a vehicle collided with a minibus that was transporting learners. The minibus overturned and left the learners trapped inside. Machebe and Phaleng rushed to the scene, helped the learners to get out of the vehicle and calmed them down while waiting for the emergency services to arrive. “It was a traumatic incident that left me in agony. I saw everything as it happened and the first thing that came to my mind was my own child. My colleague and I immediately rushed to the scene. Funnily enough neither of us has First Aid experience, we just broke the windows of the minibus and rescued the children,” Machebe recalled the incident. 7 Eleven Owner Daan Rossouw thanked Machebe and Phaleng for their quick and selfless action. “On behalf of the children, the schools involved and the community in general we thank the two ladies for their action above and beyond their normal duties,” Rossouw said.

Executive Mayor OBSERVER 5 on muni wide project visit Oktober 2, 2014

P

olokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng this week started a municipality wide programme to visit projects that are being implemented to check on progress and to ensure that the right quality is delivered. The aim of the visits is to ensure that projects are delivered to communities on time and are of high quality. It also serves to remind contractors and consultants of the importance of delivering on time so that the communities can enjoy the services as promised by government. According to Tidimalo Chuene, Manager Communications and Marketing of the municipality, Nkadimeng, accompanied by the municipality’s political management team and relevant members of the Mayoral Committee, visited Ga-Dikgale and Moletjie areas to inspect roads and water projects that are currently underway. During a project visit the project managers, consultants, contractors and project community liaison officers are expected to be on site in order to explain and provide feedback on

progress and any challenges that are being experienced. The municipality’s cluster satellite offices will also be visited to inspect their functionality. Nkadimeng is quoted to have said that it is important for the project managers, contractors and consultants to be reminded that this government has promised to better the people’s lives by providing them access to quality services and that work must continue as planned so that the communities can lead a better life. “The contractors and consultants have an obligation to ensure that projects servicing our communities are delivered on time and are of high quality,” she said. Another challenge the municipality is experiencing with some projects is contractors who accepted to do work for the municipality knowing they would fail. This has a very negative impact on the services that residents are expecting from government. “Not completing projects on time results in roll-overs that deny communities of services and also impact negatively on the municipality’s spending pattern,” the Executive Mayor said, adding that the municipality cannot allow

a situation where projects go beyond their expected completion period as this robs communities of services. “We have to do this because we have been given a mandate to protect our people’s interests,” Nkadimeng added. At one project that involves construction of a reservoir which has gone past its completion date, the Executive Mayor warned the consultants that they should be aware that further delays on the project are not acceptable as “the people are not having drinking water as a result of the delays”. It was agreed that the contractors will be given a month’s grace to ensure that the reservoir is in operation. Nkadimeng also visited the Molepo, Chuene and Maja cluster on a similar mission on Monday and also opened the Mothiba-Ngwanamago satellite office as part of the municipality’s programme to decentralise services to the clusters in order to ensure that communities access services closest to their places of residence. To facilitate this, service units like water, roads and traffic are deployed to the satellite offices.

Tragedy strikes youth orchestra in Senegal ROELIEN VORSTER >> roelien.observer@gmail.com A damper was placed on the usually jubilant sounds of the Limpopo Youth Orchestra (LYO) when one of its members, Daniel Modiba died in Dakar, Senegal last Tuesday. Modiba from Gakama Village outside Mankweng tragically drowned while the orchestra was on a visit to Senegal at the invitation of the South African Embassy as part of celebrations to commemorate South Africa’s 20 years of democracy. LYO Managing Director Simoné AronjeAdetoye said they are all heartbroken by the tragedy. “The SA Embassy organised counselling for the other members and they are scheduled for another session today (Tuesday),” she said and added that as a result of this tragedy the scheduled programmes in collaboration with the Senegalese artists at the opening of the Nelson Mandela Art Exhibition and Museum and the performances in Dakar’s Grand Theatre, were cancelled. “The orchestra however decided to do a tribute performance for their friend at the South African Ambassador’s Residence on Wednesday, 24 September. This function was attended by various ministers from Senegal, cabinet members, ambassadors from different countries and the staff from the South African Embassy,” Aronje-Adetoye said.

The late Daniel Matome Modiba from Gakama Village in Ga Mamabolo outside Mankweng died tragically in a drowning accident last week. She explained that the circumstances surrounding Modiba’s death are still a mystery. “We left on Monday, 22 September and arrived in Dakar at 01:00 the next day. We booked in at the hotel and after we had some rest, we were invited to a briefing by the Ambassador on the customs and history of the country. After rehearsals with the national orchestra of Senegal, we returned to the hotel. It was a scorching hot day and I suggested we all go for a swim to cool off and arranged to meet the students in an hour at the hotel’s swimming pool. Some of the students arrived earlier and started playing in the shallow end of the pool while Daniel was in the deep end.” She said the hotel staff and paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he was declared dead

en route to hospital. She said she and the other members took a return flight next day while the teachers and guest artists returned on Saturday. Modiba started his training with the LYO four years ago, at the age of 15. He was a promising trumpeter, keen to learn more as far as improving his musical knowledge is concerned, Aronje-Adetoye said. He was supposed to play his practical exams in trumpet through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music this month. “We wish to express our sincere thanks to our Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Abel Shilubane and his team, the Senegalese Arts and Culture Ministry, SAA Dakar, Management of the Grand Theatre, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) representatives from the Department of Sports Arts and Culture, KZN traditional Dance Group and the Senegalese National Orchestra members for the tremendous support they had given to LYO during these extremely trying times,” Aronje-Adetoye said. Daniel’s teacher, Innocent Mokoena said his death came as a huge shock, but he fondly remembers Daniel as being very dedicated, hard working and eager to learn. “He was a bubbly person and knew how to make people laugh, even in the most serious situations.” Conductor Bafana Baloyi said Daniel was a

Advertorial>> Protect your heart… and your pocket According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, there are about 130 heart attacks and 240 strokes daily in this country. Statistics show that one in three South African adults has high blood pressure, which is one of the leading causes of heart attacks and stroke. “There are several lifestyle choices you can make to reduce your risk of developing cardiac disease,” said Willem Barnard from Sanlam, “but financially, very few people are prepared to deal with a major health setback.” Many people make the mistake of believing that a good medical aid is enough to protect them against the financial implications of cardiovascular disease. “They tend to forget about the indirect costs associated with suffering and recovering from a heart attack and stroke.” Depending on the severity of your condition and the length of your recovery period, you may be temporarily unable to work. “In some cases, patients need several months to recover, and the loss of income can be crippling financially, especially if you are the main breadwinner,” said Barnard. “You may also require expensive therapies and incur travel costs to and from hospital or a care centre if you are unable to drive yourself. Dread disease cover, which pays a lump sum on diagnosis, can go a long way to pay travel expenses and the costs of treatments not covered by your medical aid, while income protection will help keep your family afloat while you are ill. ”Income protection cover pays a monthly amount if you are temporarily unable to work. This money will replace all or a portion of your salary and can be used to cover household expenses and other financial obligations until you are able to resume work.” Having the right cover in place will give you peace of mind, leaving you free to focus on your recovery. Speaking to a financial adviser can help you assess how much cover you require and address any gaps in your financial planning, Barnard said. “A professional can help you choose the best options to address your specific needs and personal budget.” Be kind to your heart, but make sure you are covered. The dilapidated mud structure of about 2 m² was the only home Conny (14) and Frans (10) Mathebula knew. (Insert) They were sleeping on the floor with only a thin sponge mattress and two worn-out blankets.

Connie and Frans Mathebula enter their newly constructed house for the first time.

In the heart of Mavele village in the Letsitele area, two young children left destitute by the death of their mother in July and barely making ends meet with the help of their mostly impoverished community have been given a new lease on life through the generosity and social awareness of Standard Bank, Tzaneen and the Comprehensive Health Care Trust. Standard Bank handed over a specially built house to the children on Heritage Day to ensure that they have adequate shelter and improved living conditions. Conny (14) and Frans (10) Mathebula were living in a mud structure of about 2m², with a dilapidated corrugated iron roof, no windows and a broken door. They have no furniture, except for a sponge mattress and two worn blankets to shield them from the elements of nature. At times, when food is scarce, they often go to sleep hungry and when they do receive food, they said thugs would break into the mud structure when they are at school to steal the meagre offerings from neighbours. Clothes, blankets and a school uniform are luxuries they can only dream off until someone donates tattered clothes and blankets and because they don’t have birth certificates, they can’t apply for a child grant either. If not for the efforts of Comprehensive Health Care Trust (Choice Trust), a non-profit, non-government

organisation outreach project who visits them regularly, a bleak and dark future awaited them. Nikki Stuart-Thompson from Choice Trust said the organisation has been working in the village for some time when they were informed about the children’s situation. “Standard Bank in Tzaneen approached us with an initiative and the children immediately came to mind,” she said and added that Choice Trust has been supplying food parcels and psycho-social support. They also managed to collect enough money to buy two mattresses and two blankets, school uniforms, shoes and bags. Limpopo Provincial Marketing Manager for Standard Bank in Tzaneen, Tshilidzi Simeli said the bank wanted to make a contribution in celebration of Mandela Day in July. “We contacted Choice Trust who sent us a few projects we can contribute to, but it was the plight of the two children that caught our attention,” she said and added that a staff meeting was immediately arranged and they agreed to contribute personally in order to build a house. She said the response was overwhelming. “We also decided to ask some of our clients to donate materials and we received a positive response from them as well.” Simeli said Masedi Construction donated staff to build the whole structure from start to finish. “Amphiguard Brickyard, Omni Risk Solution, Daily Double, Bamtel Communications and Shingange General Dealer also contributed,” Simeli said.

While the house was under construction, the children temporarily lived with a friend, Maria Maselane (18), a matric learner of Sevengwana High School in Mavele village, who also live alone and whose parents are in Johannesburg. A very shy and clearly overwhelmed by all the attention Connie, who understands very little English, through an interpreter explained that her father passed away a long time ago while her mother died at the end of July this year. She said the cause of death is still unknown. She is currently in Grade 9 at Sevengwana High School while her brother is attending Mavele Primary school. During the official hand-over of the house on Heritage Day, Headman Edward Miyexe Ndlovu said he is happy that the children are taken care of and that can concentrate on their studies. “May God’s blessings increase from here on,” he said and requested that the children look after the house while he assists Choice Trust to obtain birth certificates. A delighted Connie and Frans accepted the house keys from Thema Mhlongo from Standard Bank. Simeli said although the children have a place to stay, they have nothing to furnish it with and pleads for any kind of donation. “Anything will be accepted. They have nothing, only a thin sponge mattress. Not a teaspoon or cup. We also need to increase security since they remain vulnerable. We need a fence around the house and burglar proof. If anyone can assist, please contact me on 083 452 7490,” she said.

Banking risk information centre warns on scam

The South African Banking Risk Information Cen tre (Sabric) has warned banking customers about a scam in which they are informed of a change in the supplier’s banking details and that future payments should be made into the new account. In a recent press statement Sabric Chief Execu tive Officer, Kalyani Pillay warned customers to be wary when being told that a certain supplier has changed their banking details. “The scam operates by an innocent recipient receiving an email informing them that their particular suppli ers has changed their banking details and would then include details of the new bank account in which future payments should be made,” she said. Pillay said people should question whether companies would change banking details without notifying people through more formal channels and they should ensure that they confirm any changes of details. “Furthermore companies should ensure that private information is not disclosed to a third party and that all invoices of the business and suppliers and any communica tion material that may contain letterheads be shredded,” she warned.

Four suspects appeared in the Bela-Bela Mag istrate’s Court on Monday after being arrested for the alleged murder of Lynette Pamela Lav ender on a smallholding just outside Rust de Winter last Thursday. According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto the four men will appear in court again on 8 October for a bail application. They face charges of murder and theft of a vehicle, and were remanded in custody. “Last Thursday Lavender’s neighbour saw a suspicious looking man leaving her premises with her vehicle. He investigated and allegedly found Lavender’s body with multiple stab wounds,” Otto said, adding that Lavender stayed alone on the premises and it is still not clear whether anything was stolen from the house. Investigation led to the arrest of the four men, whose identities Otto could not reveal yet, in Mabopane with the stolen vehicle in their possession. One of the suspects had allegedly been employed by Lavender as gardener for a short period.

T

he University of Limpopo (UL) during its annual Spring Graduation Ceremony held last Thursday awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees to 682 successful undergraduate and graduate students in the faculties Health Sciences; Science and Agriculture; Management and Law and Humanities. Nine undergraduate diplomas, 133 undergraduate certificates, 316 undergraduate degrees, 16 postgraduate certificates, 45 postgraduate diplomas, 69 honours and 85 masters degrees were conferred. Among the graduates were also nine recipients of doctoral degrees in Philosophy (DPhil) five of whom in the Faculty of Humanities, two in Health Sciences and one each in the other two faculties. UL Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Mahlo Mokagalong in his address said the university hopes that the graduates will use their skills and qualifications to improve services in government. “We are proud of these graduates. The country is in need of people like them. With their qualifications and skills we believe they will improve the state of the country. The country needs improved services at local, provincial and national level. We no longer want people to embark on service delivery protests and we

• Health Sciences • Humanities believe with their skills they will help the country in that regard,” he said. Mokgalong also urged the graduates not to, when they get their first job, forget the contribution made by their parents. “Those who are not employed yet, I know you are going to become employed. I want you to give your parents that first paycheque because you couldn’t have done it without their support,” he told the graduates. Two graduates from the Faculty of Management and Law, Sabe Mabye (BCom Economics) and Gibson Nyirenda (MCom) were named Best Students in their respective fields of study and received the Standard Bank Awards. Agnes Lebelo who received an Advanced Certificate in Education specialising in School Management and Leadership, said she was happy to have completed her qualification in a targeted time. “It was not easy at because I am mother, a wife and a full-time educator. It was all very demanding but I soldiered on. I hope to inspire someone out with my achievement because one can never stop learning and it is always good to equip yourself with knowledge,” she said.

>> Heritage is about celebrating one’s identity and dignity >> ‘It will require leadership from all spheres of life’ BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com “Celebrating Heritage Day would be more meaningful if more of our people are freed from poverty and inequalities, especially now that we enter the third decade of our freedom,” Capricorn District (CDM) Executive Mayor Gilbert Kganyago told those attending the district’s Heritage Day celebrations at GaMamabolo Moshate last Wednesday. The celebration was held to remind and empower people about the importance of embracing and preserving their heritage. In his address, Kganyago said it is worrisome to celebrate Heritage Day when multitudes of people, especially in rural communities, still live in abject poverty and underdevelopment. “Your massive presence here as young people speaks volumes about your plight for a better life and I can see that plight on your faces - a plight to have jobs and live a better live, and that will give you a true reason to celebrate heritage because poverty is not our heritage”, Kganyago reportedly said. He added that heritage is about celebrating one’s identity and dignity and that people need a secure living income to have their dignity affirmed and restored. A media release issued by CDM Media Liaison Officer, Moffat Senyatsi quoted Kganago to have said: “This is what will make our people celebrate their cultural heritage with pride and joy; a heritage

Walk with lions sees Ranch Resort roar into Fodor’s top 10 T

he experience of walking with lions in the African bush, along with horseback safaris and big game drives has put Protea Hotel Ranch Resort in Limpopo on Fodor’s latest list of Top 10 Luxury Ranches in the World. The new Top 10 Luxury Ranches list includes El Colibri in Cordoba, Argentina, which offers the experience of a day in the life of a well-heeled gaucho – including afternoon polo – and Les Mas de Peint in Arles, France, which offers riding the white horses of the Camargue before enjoying a Provencal dinner. Protea Hotel Ranch Resort’s Paul Shearer says the hotel’s excellent facilities coupled with the unique experience offered of actually doing a bush walk alongside lions is one that tourists always say creates memories

that will last their entire lives. Tourists are also particularly drawn to the breeding projects on the conservancy that help put wildlife back into the bush. “Protea Hotel Ranch Resort is committed to conservation. A herd of 28 sable antelope has been introduced, with the dominant bull, known as ‘Lord of the Rings’ boasting impressive, 49⅜ inch horns, making him one of the most sought-after stud bulls in

the country. Protea Hotel Ranch Resort also recently introduced golden wildebeest, a species that was on the verge of extinction, and the numbers have steadily recovered though the help of private breeding programmes. Both the sable and golden wildebeest are extremely valuable and a treat for visitors to see.” Danny Bryer, Director of Sales, Marketing and Revenue for Protea Hotels, says

accolades such as that from Fodor’s can only be good for the brand, hotel, for conservation, the region and South African tourism as a whole. “We have so much to offer international tourists in South Africa, and Protea Hotel Ranch Resort is a brilliant example of the sorts of unique selling propositions that should be used to market the country internationally.” Fodor’s employs around 700 top travel writers globally offering current and discerning shopping, dining, hotel, and culture recommendations, as well as compelling features and articles that convey the essence of each destination. Fordor’s says of its travel writing: “We are confident that we’re giving you the best information because our products are written by people who live there.”

Motor dealers show off at Savannah BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com Motor dealers took advantage to showcase some of their most tempting models at the Loxion Motor Show that took place at Savannah Mall last week. A number of recently released models were on show and representatives of the brands exhibited were hands on to provide information and arrange for test drives. Full details such as performance figures and prices allowed interested buyers to compare prices and accessory packages and make an informed decision before they buy the vehicle of their dreams. Karen Botha, Group Marketing Manager of Savannah Mall, says that the show was a big success and that a number of vehicles were sold right there during the show and had to be replaced to allow their proud owners to accept delivery.

Volgens Bird se ma, Terry de Bie, was hy teen druktyd in ‘n bestendige toestand in Mankweng Hospitaal waar sy wonde gister (Woensdag) skoongemaak is.

he Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo is adamant about the intended institution of cases against Premier Stan Mathabatha and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) for failing to address matters raised in the Legislature three weeks back. Both EFF Provincial Leader Michael Mathebe and EFF Legislature Member Jossey Buthane raised several issues during a sitting that coincided with a debate on Provincial Week outcomes concluding a visit by a National Council of Provinces (NCOP) delegation to Limpopo. Since, no response had been received to any of their questions while they had given the concerned parties ample time for feedback, Buthane explained. The next step, he said, was an intended institution of cases against Mathabatha and the three MECs with the

Public Protector and other relevant institutions after failing to answer to questions posed in the house. During the Legislature session Mathebe demanded answers to questions pertaining to ownership of two apartment blocks in Ladanna and authorisation for electricity to the complexes to be cut, which was perceived to be responded to by Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure MEC Jerry Ndou. Buthane wanted answers to questions that included the status of the earlier suspension of African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Secretary Nocks Seabi while still chief executive of Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), posed to Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC Seaparo Sekoati. He further requested proof of security clearance for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC Makoma Makurupetje to be furnished, asked about a review of an initial matter against departmental officials and whether the chief financial officer of the department was charged in the same case as well as enquired about progress on the proposed integrated housing development in Bendor’s Extension 100. Buthane referred to demanding of the Premier an account on his salary increase and bonus while still in the employ of the then Limpopo Economic Development Enterprise (Limdev) years back; progress on the pending suspension of heads of government departments (HODs) and the reason for the charges against the senior officials continuously changing. On Monday Buthane told Polokwane Observer they had given the Premier and MECs ample time until the next sitting, which was expected to take place on Tuesday afternoon, to respond to their questions. He later indicated the session had been postponed. On Tuesday it was learnt that the next sitting is supposed to take place in mid-October. If their questions still remained unanswered by then they intended to take the matter further, both Buthane and Mathebe stressed.

Workmanship categories at the biennial South African National Quilt Festival. Four of her Celtic Quilt designs have won major prizes at the annual World Quilt Competition in the United Kingdom. Prins explained that although she loves all quilt styles she specialises in making heirloomquality quilts using traditional techniques, but they are her own original designs. “There are limitless possibilities when working with fabrics and designing within limits,” she said and added that she only uses 100% cotton fabric. She said the quilters at Capricorn Quilting are very eager to learn more about the trade. “They are hungry for knowledge. There is such a lovely vibe.” She complimented Koraal Quilters Guild Chairperson Linda Oerlemans on her exceptional hand-made quilts. “Every stitch is perfect. The most important quality one must possess is to enjoy working on quilts, you don’t have to be perfect,” Prins said. Oerlemans said Koraal Quilters Guild gathers at the NG Kerk Pietersburg-Oos once a month to encourage each other and have show-and-tell sessions. “There are currently 28 members but anybody is welcome to join,” she said. According to Oerlemans the group started working on the Sylvia’s Bridal Samplers Quilts exhibited at Capricorn Quilting last week. “Each member committed to work on at least ten blocks per month. They needed about 140 blocks in order to complete the quilt. Each quilt was beautifully made and you can see how much effort was put into it,” Oerlemans said.

She invited everybody who wants to join the guild to contact her on 082 572 4877. Capricorn Quilting offers classes and workshops in quilting for beginners to advanced quilters. Contact Capricorn Quilting at 015 297 2146.

>> Thanking them for their continued support >> Reward customers who have been loyal to the company reat excitement was at the order of the day when Goseame Meat Market Polokwane in partnership with Deli Spices and Coca-Cola Fortune gave away microwave ovens, braai stands, camping chairs, Coca-Cola products and shopping vouchers to their loyal customers on Saturday. The competition took the form of a lucky draw that ran from August until September. To participate customers had to buy boerewors at the butchery and put their till slips inside the competition box after the purchase. Francois du Plessis, General Manager Butchery at Goseame Meat Market Polokwane said the competition was a way of rewarding customers who have been loyal to the com-

pany for the past 20 years. “Keeping customers makes good business sense but it is not always easy. “These are the people who are loyal to the company; we have got a long standing relationship with them. We felt it would be great to recognise their loyalty by giving back to them and by so doing thanking them for their continued support,” he said. The excited crowd that gathered for the lucky draw on Saturday had further opportunities to win prizes from Coca-Cola Fortune by participating in the 2 litre-challenge. Four selected members from the crowd were asked to empty a 2 litre bottle of Coca-Cola in three minutes or less. Given Mokonyama won the challenge after he managed to finish the bottle in the allocated time. He walked away with various goodie prizes from the company.

Polokwane residents have for the past number of years had to cope with the effect of Polokwane Municipality’s general poor maintenance of the city’s infrastructure. Lately, however, the incorrect billing system and apparent lack of will to address the issue effectively has had residents hot under the collar. Polokwane Observer asked a number of residents how they experience service delivery by the municipality.

Chevrolet Spark Pronto a spacious fuel saver A

few months ago General Motors introduced an urban hatchback capable of working as hard as a small utility vehicle and ever since the Chevrolet Spark Pronto has started a new trend among some companies. The new Chevrolet Spark Pronto does not have to stand back for any vehicle when it comes to cargo space. Some businesses require a small, efficient and profitable delivery vehicle capable of handling urban and out of town deliveries. For them, it’s all about getting a parcel to its destination quickly and inexpensively, with absolutely no need for any bells or whistles. And that is exactly what the Pronto offers with its massive 876 litres of cargo space. The Pronto has all the standard features of the Spark. The only thing missing is the back seat. General Motors saw the gap in the market for a small segment vehicle to fulfil the same capabilities and duties as a small utility. The Spark Pronto is equipped with Chevrolet’s familiar 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which it shares with every other model in the Spark range. It’s a perky little thing, enthusiastically squeezing out 60 kW at 6 400 rpm and 108 Nm at 4 800 rpm. The nippy engine is capable of shunting the light-weight Pronto from zero to 100 km/h in a little over 13 seconds, before topping out at 164 km/h.

When it comes to fuel efficiency the Pronto offers a combined fuel consumption of 5,4 litre per 100 km. The Pronto uses the same top-hinged hatch and standardheight load-lip as the Spark and with the retention of the rear doors it creates easy access to the load bay. The floor area is flat and unobstructed with a full-size spare wheel lurking beneath. The rear side windows feature metal tubing bolted to the frames to protect the cargo. As a bonus, a full VAT rebate on the purchase price for VAT-registered business operators applies, seeing that the Pronto is classed as a commercial vehicle. Safety features include driver’s and front passenger’s airbags and the passenger airbag de-activation switch, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) braking system and a front seatbelt reminder. Quality used and still like new Chevrolet Spark Prontos are available at Westvaal Polokwane G2 in 86 Schoeman Street or contact them on 015 297 2377.

Deputy Minister addresses OBSERVER 27 communication issues Oktober 2, 2014

polokwane

>> “Communication is a two-way street” ROELIEN VORSTER >> roelien.observer@gmail.com

A Stakeholder Engagement Session to discuss effective communication between Government and the media and to address various issues the media experience on a daily basis was held by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) at Fusion Boutique Hotel recently. Health MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe said Government may seem not to take communication serious but they are aware of the challenges and taking action to address it. He said that there are no challenges the ruling party cannot stand up to and they are dealing with the various constraints that exist because they are aware of their shortcomings and are working at finding a solution. He added that communication is very important because it ensures that government is in touch with the public and that the public understand how Government operates.

Deputy Minister of Communication, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said part of her portfolio is to engage with the media who are the ambassadors and have the tools for effective communication. “If you evaluate the work that has been done the past 20 years the government has identified potential threats and challenges. It is crucial that we have officers who work with the people who can communicate what is happening in the area and to continue to engage with the community,” she said and added that the responsibility of communications officers is to supply the factual information to the media. “Communication is a two-way street and when things get messed up, we need to communicate and share the issues with the residents of the area. By working together we can do more,” she said and added that if government cannot communicate to the entire community, South Africa will never be able to move forward.” Ndabeni-Abrahams stated that the right to enjoy freedom of communication also comes with responsibility not to offend others. “Government is currently focussing on economic freedom by ensuring that people

are informed of arising issues. We have to update our knowledge and skills on a daily basis because the degree that you obtained five years ago is not relevant anymore,” she said. She added that there is no need to shy away from the truth because if you put it in the right context you will be able to voice the reason which adds value to effective communication. GCIS Provincial Director, Thanyani Ravhura thanked the media for attending the Imbizo and reiterated that government is facing various challenges, but they are

working on finding solutions. A discussion and engagement session between Ndabeni-Abrahams and media representatives was held about the issues the media face when they require comment from the government’s communication office. Another problem the media faces is the language barrier and one representative suggested that the African National Congress (ANC) make use of indigenous languages when they print posters and flyers. The GCIS, as part of celebrating 20 years of democracy, has also introduced the Tell Your Story Campaign with the view to share unique stories, record history and ultimately build social cohesion and nationhood. After lunch, the delegation embarked on a handover of the Open View HD Satellite installations systems at Ga Kibi Traditional Council in Ga Kibi Thanyani village. Ravhura.

Orders could also be placed earlier during the week and according to organiser Elzarie du Toit, boxes of cupcakes were sold even before the event. I can explain the various barriers I face on a daily basis.” Three months before the life-changing accident, Tshia was a high school teacher at Sebalamakgolo High School in Phalaborwa. He then worked for nine years as a travelling store manager at Bears Furniture Group. He said whilst in that position, he trained more than eight store managers across the country. Thereafter, he worked as an Administrator and Disability Coordinator at the Provincial Police office where he was responsible for the employee’s health and wellness. “I am proud to say that I was instrumental in employing 40 disabled people in the service. I am currently the Senior Administration Officer at Transnet in Polokwane,” Tshia said. Quoting the late president, Nelson Mandela who said “After climbing to reach the pinnacle of the hill, one realises that more hills need to be conquered”. Tshia said he became conscious of the fact that disabled people are often treated as a separate entity of the community. “To accommodate disabled people in the civil society is a long process. We should not be pitied, but rather treated as equals because South Africa’s code of arms reflects that we are united in diversity. Although we are different, we can co-exist,” he said and added that very few disabled people hold a management position. He stated that the Minister of Justice, Mike Masutha hails from Limpopo and was born with a visual impairment. “The Deputy Minister of the National Department of Social Development, Hendrietta BogopaneZulu is also partially visually impaired. Tshia was elected in this position on 15 September and is also a member of the National Executive Council of Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NECPPDSA). In an interview with Polokwane Observer, Tshia said he wanted to create advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities and to represent the structures where a dialogue on disability rights issues can be discussed. “Generally speaking, there are numerous barriers a disabled person must overcome and by creating an advocacy and awareness, abled people can understand disabled persons’ rights and the diversity we represent,” Tshia said. Being a disabled person himself Tshia, who lost his left arm in a car accident in 1998, said he gained a new perspective in life. “Fortunately I have a very supportive family and they encouraged me to do more, hence my commitment towards serving the disabled. I had to undergo a traumatic amputation after the accident, but it made me realise that I will be disabled for life and although I’ve never been frustrated having only one arm, I had to shift the vision for my life,” he said and added that he can still

Six of the best for Baragwanath as he clinches championship >> First SA quad champ to win all six races

Former Polo kwane resident, Brian Baragwa nath takes to the rough terrain on his Yamaha Raptor at the Rys mierbult 400 out side Ventersdorp over the weekend to win his sixth race in a row and also clinch the overall South African Quad Bike Championship.

Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com

F

ormer Polokwane resident, Brian Baragwanath made it six victories out of six in the Q1 Quad category in this year’s South African National Off-Road Motorcycle and Quad Championship at the Rysmierbult 200 over the weekend to reclaim the title he lost last year to another Polokwane quad rider, Jurie “Botter” Meyer. Meyer was unable to participate in the last two races of the championship due to injury, but Baragwanath (Team Rhide SA Yamaha) was a deserved winner of the overall and Quad Q1 Class Championship after dominating the series in 2014. Baragwanath started off his victory sequence at the first event, the Diamond Route 400 outside Wolmaransstad in the North West in March with Meyer taking second place and another Limpopo rider, Jaco Moller (PS Extreme ATV Tzaneen Yamaha) back in third position. Thereafter Baragwanath continued to cement his position at the top of the table by reeling off another four victories and culminated a remarkable feat in 2014 by winning the last race at Rysmierbult. The tough and testing Rysmierbult 200 outside Ventersdorp in the North West was held in hot, dry and windy conditions over 180 km and tested the competitors to the limit. However, Baragwanath led from start to finish with his team-mate, Hannes Saaijman in second position followed by Jaco Moller from Tzaneen in the third place, with another Polokwane quad rider André du Plessis (Yamaha) close behind in fourth.

According to off-road racing scribe, Elza Thiart-Botes this is the first time in the quad category that any rider has won all six races in the championship. Thiart-Botes added that Limpopo fared well overall in the SA quad champs with Baragwanath first, although not considered a Limpopo resident anymore, Moller in the fifth position, Du Plessis sixth and Lephalale rider, André Park in the seventh place. Speaking to Polokwane Observer on Tuesday Bragwanath said he was chuffed to win the championship for the second time and to end the off-road season undefeated. He added that the mechanical gremlins that affected Team Rhide SA Yamaha in 2013 were sorted out and better tyres resulted in the good performances this year. Having qualified to participate in the Dakar Rally in Argentina at the beginning of 2015,

Local quad rider, André du Plessis ended in the overall sixth place in the SA Quad Bike Championship for 2014. Baragwanath said preparations were at an advanced stage to get all the bikes and equipment shipped over to Argentina by the end of October. He concluded that he is extremely excited to compete in the Dakar and looking forward to challenging the international riders in the quad category of the rally.

Polokwane professional golfer, CJ du Plessis pictured with the trophy after winning the IGT Tour’s seventh Race to Asia tournament at the ERPM Golf Club recently.

Second IGT Tour victory for Du Plessis Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Young Polokwane professional golfer CJ du Plessis claimed a four stroke victory at the East Rand Propriety Mines (ERPM) Golf Club in the IGT Tour’s seventh Race to Asia Qualifying School tournament recently. With the victory, Du Plessis claimed his second victory on the country’s premier development tour. The 23-year-old former Goose Academy graduate’s lead had dwindled to just one shot after the turn on the last day, but Du Plessis rallied with three successive birdies on the back nine to close with a 68 and win with a 14-under par 202. His nearest challengers were fellow Sunshine Tour professional, Wynand Dingle and Northern Ireland’s John McClean and Portugal’s Antonio Rosado, who finished four strokes back on 206. Du Plessis turned professional in 2012 and was pleased with his second victory on the IGT Tour. “My coach and I have been working for a while to get my swing shorter and more compact, and it’s really nice to see the work pay off like this. Hopefully I can carry this form and confidence into the Vodacom Origins tournament at Vaal de Grace next week,” Du Plessis said on the IGT Tour website. It was the magnificent nine under par 63 in the second round that paved the way for victory for Du Plessis after he carded a 71 in the first round. Although he endured a spell in the doldrums early this season, he started hitting his stride in April and recently posted a season-best tie for fourth at the Vodacom Origins in KwaZulu-Natal.

Golfers come out in support of Cansa

Photo: Herbert Rachuene

Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com A big field of 126 golfers braved the windy conditions at the Polokwane Golf Club to do their bit for charity at the Meropa Casino & Entertainment World sponsored Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) golf day on Saturday. Other than avoiding the Wild Thingz pythons that lurked around the tenth tee, golfers also had to contend with the windy conditions that made club selection rather difficult and lots of balls were lost on the day. Visiting golfers, Brendon Reddy and Stanley Sagehevan came out on top with a score of 51 points, followed by Dirk Botha and Jan du Toit, who clinched second position after a count-out on 50 points. The prize for the longest drive by ladies was won by Bev Weijters on the second tee and Freek van den Berg hit the longest drive for men on the 18th tee. The nearest to the pin at the fourth hole was Edwin Mackays while Phil Swanson repeated the feat at the eighth hole. Naas Vorster was the closest to the pin at the 11th hole and Reddy added to his prizes by hitting his ball nearest to the pin at the 16th hole. The longest day on the course prize was reluctantly won by the pairing of Mishack Mdluli and David Maluleka. Former Cansa Polokwane Community Mobiliser, Ria du Plessis now based in Pretoria made the trip to Polokwane to be present at her last golf day and thanked the golfers for contributing R60 000 towards the Cansa coffers.

Polokwane City Football Club shifts focus to Telkom Cup Herbert Rachuene >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Following a fifth consecutive loss in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, Polokwane City Football Club has shifted their focus to the Telkom Knockout Cup. City will travel to Johannesburg on Saturday for a duel with last season finalists, Orlando Pirates in the last 16 match of the competition scheduled to take place at Orlando Stadium on Sunday. City is currently in 15th position of the PSL with four points after seven matches. Polokwane City General Manager, Costa Bellos believes the club has what it takes to go further in the tournament despite struggling to stamp their authority in elite league. “We have got nothing to lose in the tournament. Pirates beat us in the league match three weeks ago and I think it is time to redeem ourselves,” Bellos said. He also mentioned that they are still awaiting the work permit of their coach Kosta Pipic who has been unable to sit on the bench since being appointed in September. “He needs a work permit to coach from the bench. In the

past matches he has been guiding the team from the grandstands and that is not what we want. However, we were told by the immigration authorities that the permit will be available next week,” Bellos said. The Telkom Knockout is a soccer knockout competition which comprises of the 16 teams in the Premier Soccer League, established in 1982 and was initially known as the Datsun Challenge. Under the new National Soccer League (NSL) it became known as the JPS Knockout Cup in 1984. It made use of this name until 1992 when it became known as the Coca-Cola Cup. It was sponsored by the drinks manufacturer until 1996, when it was replaced by the Rothmans Cup which was changed back to the Coca-Cola Cup in 2001 due to the new rules regarding tobacco sponsorship in sport. Telkom became the new sponsors in 2006. In all matches there has to be a winner on the day. This will be decided if there is no winner after full time (90 minutes). If teams are tied at full time then extra time will be played, penalties will decide the winner if the scores are still even (there is no golden goal rule).

Plaaslike Protea-hengelaar, Pieter Smit blink uit oorsee

>> Proteaspan bring vyf medaljes terug Suid-Afrika toe >> ‘Geduld, deursettingsvermoë en wil om te wen gee deurslag’ RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

A

“Sommige vis sal ek vir eie gebruik hou. My lekkerste varswatervis is forel of kurper terwyl dorado my gunste lingseevis is. Ek is eintlik glad nie kieskeurig as dit by kos uit ‘n dam of die see kom nie.”
