T

wo separate armed robberies in the city this week affected two businesses when the owners and personnel of one of the companies had to look down the barrel of a gun. The latest incident, early yesterday (Wednesday) morning, saw an employee of one of Polokwane’s biggest hardware stores narrowly escaping with his life when at least four armed robbers awaited him at the gate of a security complex in Bendor. An eyewitness on the scene described how a white Volkswagen Polo blocked the way when the victim exited the complex. “The next moment shots went off and the victim drove off in his BMW. The robbers chased after him,” the eyewitness recalled. Polokwane Observer saw security footage of the incident which clearly shows at least three men approaching the BMW while the driver of the suspected attackers, a Polo, blocked the road. The victim made a dash for

No xenophobic attacks in Lim yet RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Recent outbreaks of apparently xenophobic attacks on shops and property of foreign nationals in Soweto and other areas of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape have made for a sense of unease among residents who fear that similar incidents may occur in Limpopo. However, Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto has assured that no such incidents have been reported yet. “We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation and will attend with highest care to any incident that might lead to xenophobic attacks in Limpopo,” she said. Last week Gauteng Police arrested at least 121 people in connection with violence and looting of foreign-owned stores in Soweto, a situation that resulted in the death of at least two teenagers. Otto urged people to report xenophobic related incidents immediately at the nearest Police station.

a possible escape route via the pavement amid a shower of bullets. The victim supposedly had a large amount of money in his vehicle. It was learnt that the victim later returned to the scene where he was met by Police. The general manager of the hardware store confirmed the incident. “The employee and his wife escaped unharmed. We wish not to contemplate or speculate on what led to the robbery,” he said. At the time of going to press Polokwane Police Spokesperson Lesiba Ramoshaba said Police were still at the scene and that no information was made available yet. On Monday the owner of a well known nursery was robbed by two armed men on the premises of his business. Westenburg Police Spokesperson Mohlaka Mashiane said two suspects allegedly entered the offices during the early morning hours. “They allegedly held the owner at gunpoint and stole cell phones, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of money. We have not made any arrests yet,” he said.

Sakeman, vier ander verdrink binne week in provinsie Van bl 1 verlede Woensdag ‘n tienjarige seun se liggaam uit ‘n dam by Ga-Molepo gehaal.

Dit is waar my man gelewe het,” sê Sandra.

Call for rescue From page 1 team where the affairs of the Department of Education was concerned was stressed by Democratic Alliance (DA) Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle, who was joined by fellow-committee members calling for the immediate removal of the administrator, investigations into the actions of the administrator, steps against the administrator if necessary and all related reports be handed to Scopa for perusal. Shortly after summarising the demands Scopa Chairperson Rob Tooley announced a closed session to discuss the suggested intervention. It came at a time of a possible provincial cabinet reshuffle as all eyes are fixed on Premier Stan Mathabatha who is expected to appoint another MEC for Education in the vacant position left by Thembi Nwedamutswu and the anticipated departure of the administrators from Limpopo, which led to last week’s establishment of an inter-ministerial task team of MECs. The appointment of the preferred candidate in the position might not be a direct replacement but a resultant reshuffle, ruling party cadres pointed out. Some sources alluded to the likelihood that the post of MEC entrusted with such a crucial portfolio could be given to a female candidate again while others imagine it could call for a reshuffle among currently serving MECs. Sources were in agreement that the person who would take over at Education should be a dynamic individual who could take the department forward. The opinion was raised that Mathabatha should not be in a hurry to fill the vacant position. Consideration of an appointment would grant him the opportunity to assess performance by his line-up of MECs, of whom some had about eight months to prove themselves in their current positions. A view that was expressed was that the line-up of presently serving MECs had too short a period in office to be judged on performance. It was learnt that Health, being one of the key departments, would most likely come under scrutiny. According

to sources doubt existed whether MEC Ishmail Kgetjepe was the right person for the job as the department was seen to be failing in meeting certain demands for service delivery, especially during the period of administration. From inner ruling party ranks came the indication that Kgetjepe could be more suitable for the Education portfolio, considering his past career in that sphere. Kgetjepe’s department has been under administration with four others since December 2011. A senior cadre in the ruling party in the province indicated that the system wasn’t agile as long as the team of administrators remained in Limpopo. When approached on the matter Provincial Government spokesperson Phuti Seloba stressed that running a province should not be likened to coaching a soccer team whose reserve players warmed up throughout the game in anticipation to be fielded any time. “We would like to appeal to the people of the province to stop with their speculations because it could demoralise persons hard at work taking this province forward. Such speculations may be based on malice.” On the issue of the administrators expected to present Mathabatha with a final report before their departure, Seloba mentioned an inter-ministerial task team of four MECs, headed by Treasury MEC Rudolph Phala, was appointed by the Exco last week. Wednesday’s appointment of the task team was aimed at following up on matters to be raised in the anticipated report, Seloba stressed. They would be looking at, among others, fast-tracking ongoing investigations and disciplinary action dealt with by the administrators, he said. The focus would further be on competent people to take the province forward and ensure 5 December 2011, when Limpopo departments were placed under administration, remained a no-go area, Seloba reiterated. The Exco simultaneously approved a procurement and supply chain policy for the province, he said, to curb unnecessary spending of taxpayers’ money, guaranteed value for money

and improved quality of services accompanied by compliance monitoring. Work on the policy developed by the Department of Provincial Treasury started late last year and it was approved after recommended amendments were made, he concluded. Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) Provincial Secretary Gerald Twala reiterated a previous demand for the departure of the administrators. He said it would grant the Premier and provincial government the opportunity to fast-track service delivery. Questioned about their preferences for the appointment of an Education MEC, he said in terms of the challenges posed to the department the individual should be very strong. He indicated they would be meeting with Mathabatha and the ruling party next week to make known their preferences in that regard. Cosatu’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) would conduct an analysis of the performance of MECs when they meet again in February, Twala concluded. South African Communist Party (SACP) Provincial Secretary Gilbert Kganyago could not be reached for comment in his capacity as representative of the alliance partner. On behalf of the DA Smalle said the Department of Education needed a very strong individual with a strong academic background in the position of MEC. Referring to urgent intervention required at the department, he said a lot more than only one or two appointments needed to be done to see change happening. If the expected reshuffle on the cards resulted in any fatalities it would be interesting to see who it was going to be, he concluded. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Leader Michael Mathebe echoed similar sentiments when saying the Premier should appoint a capable person who would be equal to the task. It should be a non-factional appointment, he reckoned. The Department of Education should be considered as critical and needed rescuing, he reiterated.

DA asks for high level intervention in Mogalakwena crisis YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com Issues of concern arising from happenings at Mogalakwena Municipality has moved the Democratic Alliance (DA) to request a special meeting of the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for a host of high level role players to present comprehensive reports on the crisis within the institution. In a letter dated Monday, DA Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Kevin Mileham requested the committee chairperson to convene a special portfolio committee meeting for Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Pravin Gordhan; Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC Makoma Makurupetje; Provincial Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and the Municipal Manager of Mogalakwena to present reports on the matter. He further requested the presence of the parliamentary legal adviser at the proceedings. In the letter, of which a copy was provided to Polokwane Observer, he referred to the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Mmusi Maimane, recently being prevented by the South African Police Service from

entering the premises of Mogalakwena Local Municipality. He mentioned a previous letter to the chairperson stating that the shocking turn of events at the institution required urgent investigation and a comprehensive plan of action to address problems. Mileham further asked to be advised on an earlier discussion on a report on the Mogalakwena situation. At the same time he indicated that it would be greatly appreciated if the proposed meeting could be convened before 17 February. From DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle it was learnt that the DA was in the process of further considering legal action arising from events at Mogalakwena Local Municipality. Smalle also referred to the incident involving members of Mogalakwena Residents Association at a stadium in Mahwelereng on Sunday, a gathering aimed at apparently planning protest action against the municipal institution and the Police, when rubber bullets and tear gas were reportedly fired. In this regard Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto indicated that seven members of a concerned group of residents were granted bail of R500 each on Tuesday after being arrested for alleged public violence during an incident at Mahwelereng the previous day.

EFF to finalise land grab programme YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo has not yet finalised its programme of action for threatening occupation of vacant state and private land. A week ago Polokwane Observer reported on the EFF in the province, as elsewhere in the country, gearing up towards engaging in possible land

grabs. EFF Provincial Leader Michael Mathebe spoke to the publication ahead of a meeting during which the issue would have served on the agenda last week. In a follow-up conversation at the time of going to press he indicated that they still needed to conclude consultations in that regard and would most likely finalise the programme of action within the next two weeks.

Asked about the latest developments in the matter this week, DA Legislature Member Langa Bodlani said he simply awaited the findings by the Public Protector, which in the past apparently indicated to the tenants that they had no case, before advising the concerned individuals that the DA would not continue pursuing the matter.

R1 bil adjustment budget for muni BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com

S

ervice delivery in Capricorn district got a major boost following a budget adjustment from the original budget of R897 million to R1 billion for the 2014/2015 financial year that was approved by Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) last Friday following a midyear budget review wherein areas that require additional funding were identified. Moffat Senyatsi, Media Liaison Officer of CDM in a media release stated that the total budget was increased by 21% (R191 million) which was derived from an increase in capital budget and a decrease in operational budget, resulting in an increase from R293 million to R442 million in

capital budget and a decrease of R732 million to R727 million in operating budget. “This means that some of the capital projects such as water services have gained more resources and funding while others, such as roads will lose their budget as CDM does not implement roads projects anymore. The adjustment will help the municipality to address the current service delivery backlog in water which is now 11% and ensure that all households have access to water,” the statement read. “As the district nears the end of the council term, the council has committed the budget to finish a suite of capital projects that were identified during the beginning of the 2014/15 financial year,” Senyatsi concluded.

Lim DA prepares for elective congress YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province is preparing for an elective congress scheduled for the third week of February which could see current Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle retaining his position. According to DA Provincial Congress Spokesperson Solly Malatsi, who is also DA Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation, nominations for leadership positions and other issues to ensure a credible congress were be-

ing finalised this week. The congress, planned for 21 February, would be expected to elect a provincial leader, deputy leader, chairperson and two deputy-chairpersons. He said 362 voting delegates would attend the congress. The congress is held every three years, it was learnt. Predictions are that Smalle could retain his lead when branches elect their preferences. A senior DA leader indicated that Smalle enjoyed favourable support while DA Legislature member Bodlani Langa would be a front runner for chairpersonship.

“Here I am living my dream.” These are the words of Alfred Matshebelele, a qualified mining engineering artisan and author of a newly launched book titled ‘The Artisan’. Matshebelele said the book is aimed at encouraging young people to become artisans and thereby address shortages in the field as well as to inspire young people that they can make it in life regardless of the challenges they are confronted with. “South Africa is a developing country and there is a need for more artisans. “We need to address the shortage in order for us to progress,” Matshebelele said. He also mentioned that with the book he wants to show young people that anything is possible in life. “We just have to exert ourselves in everything we do and focus,” he insisted. Matshebelele, who hails from Ipelegeng near Thabazimbi, matriculated in 2001 and was hired by Anglo American as a pipe track ventilation assistant at their Amandelbult Mine. While working as an engineering assistant he enrolled for evening classes to improve his Mathematics and science. This in turn led to his enrolment at an institution of higher learning where he completed his artisan’s course in Mechanical Engineering. Further in-service training saw him become a foreman at Anglo Platinum’s Mokgalakwena Mine where he is currently employed. The Artisan is self published and more can be read about it on ndababooksconner. blogspot.com.

Gemors langs Nikkelstraat ’n kopseer vir sakelui BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com

S

Two Zimbabwean women, Memory Maphosa and Lesotho citizen Vuyiswa Mabasa appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of possession of drugs worth more than R8 million. They remained in custody and the case was postponed until 3 February for further investigation. Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto stated that the two women were arrested at Beit Bridge late Sunday night when they were walking across the bridge from Zimbabwe into South Africa. “They were stopped and searched by officials of the South African Revenue Services who found them in possession of a drug like substance. The Police were called in and it was determined that the women were allegedly carrying ephedrine, one of the main substances of heroin,” Otto said. The women were allegedly carrying more than 18 kg of the substance. Investigations to determine where the women were coming from and where they were heading to are still being conducted.

Police made a major breakthrough when a 28-year-old rape suspect from Bolobedu was arrested on Friday. The man faces charges of the alleged rape of five elderly women between 2009 and 2013. He appeared in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was denied bail. He will remain in custody until his next appearance on 27 February. Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe stated that the alleged incidents occurred at Bochabelo, Ga-Abel and Ga-Ntata villages respectively where he supposedly targeted elderly women who were tending to maize fields. The alleged victims are between aged 53 and 75. “His method of raping them was found to be the same except in one incident where he allegedly broke into the victim’s home and raped her. The rest were targeted in the fields during the day,” Ngoepe said. The women’s description of the rapist and similarities in the modus operandi as well as forensic evidence led the Police to believe that the attacks were carried out by the same person.

World Religion Day celebrated in Polokwane LEANDRI VAN SCHALKWYK >>leandri.observer@gmail.com World Religion Day was celebrated at the SABC auditorium in Polokwane last Sunday. The programme consisted of prayers, songs, dance presentations and brief talks by the representatives of various religions. Parvin Shaker, one of the organisers reported that at the introduction of the programme the holy scriptures of some of the world’s greatest religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Baha’i, were quoted on the theme of unity. He added that he spirit of the day was very aptly captured in a quotation from the writings of the Baha’i religion: “The people of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God”. Commenting that the celebration of World Religion Day is a wonderful means of bringing the believers of the various world religions together in a spirit of love and fellowship Shaker said: “It allowed everyone to realise that world unity and peace are indeed possible when we realise that we are all the servants of one God. It is hoped that this event will be celebrated every year as it contributes towards bringing us closer to realising unity and peace in our communities and in the world in general”. World Religion Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of January. Anyone interested in participating in next years’ event should call Reina Molapo on 082 662 9655.

Successful release of poisoned and injured vultures

January 29, 2015

22 OBSERVER E

polokwane

leven Cape Vultures took to the skies in the late afternoon sun after a short downpour of rain after being successfully treated and rehabilitated for poisoning and other injuries at Crown Rehabilitation and Wildlife Conservation Centre (CRWCC) outside Polokwane recently. Although rather reluctant to leave the safe haven of Crown initially after spending a couple of months being treated and rehabilitated, the majestic birds spread their wings to join the few remaining colonies of Cape Vultures remaining worldwide. Limpopo is home to the largest colonies of Cape Vultures, with breeding colonies found in Moletji, Blouberg and Marakele National Park. But the Cape Vulture remains under threat due to eating poisoned carcasses laid out by farmers to kill other vermin and the use of certain parts of vultures for muti by traditional

healers. CRWCC owner Rene Olivier was understandably delighted with the successful treatment and release of the vultures on Friday. “The team that tagged the soon-to-bereleased birds last Saturday commented that

they have been among of the healthiest Cape Vultures ever to be released after being successfully treated and rehabilitated for poisoning,” Olivier said with pride. Out of the 17 vultures that were brought

One of Cape Vultures that was treated and rehabilitated at Crown Rehabilitation and Wildlife Conservation Centre (CRWCC) outside Polokwane spreads its wings before taking to the sky. to CRWCC over the past few months, fourteen have been successfully rehabilitated, an excellent survival rate, the beaming animal lover explained. A quick turn-around from the sombre moments experienced earlier as shortly before the arrival of Polokwane Observer on Friday, another badly injured Cape Vulture was brought to the centre by a farmer in the Blouberg area. After a quick and professional examination, a visibly distressed Olivier quickly composed herself and informed Polokwane Observer that the badly injured bird would have to be euthanized the next day. The vulture was found to have one of the worse cases of a broken wing Olivier said she has ever witnessed in her seven years of treating injured animals and birds. The vulture also had a broken leg and was highly stressed and in pain.

With the help of her assistant Gift Kwaramba, Olivier stabilised the vulture with a tube fed into the crop of the injured animal for its last day on earth before being taken to the vet the next day to be put down to relieve it’s pain and suffering, clearly caused by the folly of mankind. CRWCC is busy with the completion of a large bird aviary in order for raptors and other birds to become flying-fit before their release. The largest aviary at an animal rehabilitation in Limpopo, according to Olivier measures 40 metres long and ten metres wide and has a height of 6,6 metres and has been built with the assistance of a number of sponsors. olokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng on Friday evening hosted a gala dinner for the visiting Vodacom Blue Bulls team that was due to play in a warm-up game against the Toyota Cheetahs in the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised to receive a donation of R50 000 towards the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund. In her welcoming address, Nkadimeng thanked the Vodacom Blue Bulls for their continued support of the City of Stars and empha-

sised that the city embraced the fact that sport brings people together and plays a critical role towards social cohesion. “As a result, we have resolved to deliberately use sporting events to empower disadvantaged individuals and assist in providing them with access to schooling, recreational activities as well as relief where needed. The clash of the giants in the city continues to be the greatest contributor to the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund,” Nkadimeng added. In conclusion she mentioned that during 2013, an amount of R1,7 million was raised through sporting and other events from which 30 charity organisations benefitted and

Chief Executive Officer of the Toyota Cheetahs, Harold Verster, also thanked the city for the hospitality and both Vodacom Blue Bulls Coach Frans Ludeke, who hails from Polokwane, and Naka Drotské of the Toyota Cheetahs took the opportunity to entertain the guests with stories from past games.

Limpopo Guest Manor receives R100 000 from Ledet HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Mmabogoshi Msiza owner of Limpopo Guest Manor was on Monday presented with a cheque for R100 000 for winning the National Lilizela Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Eteya) last year October. Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC, Seaparo Sekoati handed over the prize money and congratulated the management and staff of the establishment for winning such an esteemed award in the industry and thereby putting the province on the map. “Our province continues to display prominence in this category and we are very content with that trajectory as this will grow tourism and economy in our province. Winning this accolade puts our province on the world tourism map while the winners also receive unparalleled exposure locally and internationally,” Sekoati said. Referring to the fact that, since the inception of the award, the province has registered four national winners and six runners-up the MEC said: “This is a clear indication that we are growing from strength to strength and in the process, made immense impact on small medium micro enterprises who won this accolade. We wish to express gratitude to LTA for encouraging tourism products in the province to enter for this competition as this helps in improving the conditions of the products,” Sekoati said. Limpopo Guest Manor Owner, Mmabogoshi Msiza said she is going to reinvest the money into the business, with the new product to be launched soon. “We were not expecting the money but

there are quite a few things in the pipeline and we are also planning to refurbish some of the rooms,” Msiza said. She also mentioned that their occupancy rate has increased since been bestowed with the national award. “We have seen lots of changes. The occupancy rate for weekends has moved up from 30% to 60%, while our conference occupancy has also moved from 70% to 90% and we are happy with the increases,” Msiza said. She reiterated that she was happy to have won the award because it epitomises the long, arduous journey that Limpopo Guest Manor team has travelled in the past nine years.

“This award is bigger than me as an entrepreneur, bigger than Limpopo Guest Manor as a player in the tourism sector. Most importantly this award is dedicated to the broader Limpopo tourism family, for our achievement is a reflection of the excellence, the zeal and commitment of stakeholders to position our province as the ultimate ecotourism destination,” Msiza said. The Eteya award is a category of the Lilizela Tourism Awards which recognise and reward tourism players and businesses who work passionately and with pride to deliver a world class product and service and whose delivery grows South Africa’s global destination competitiveness.

Tshepo Nkoana, Grade 2 student at Pula Madibogo Primary School and Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture show off the national flag during Mabudafhasi’s visit last Thursday.

PACKAGES CAN BE STRUCTURED TO MEET YOUR NEEDS • MANY OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM.

Deputy Minister promotes national symbols, heritage A visit by Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture last Thursday, gave learners of Pula- Madibogo Primary School in Mankweng an opportunity to gain valuable information about the national flag, anthem and symbols. The purpose of Mabudafhasi ‘s visit was to heighten awareness and consciousness of national symbols, the national anthem and the national flag. Addressing the learners she said South Africa possesses unique and original national symbols and with its flag being one of the most recognisable in the world it is important for learners to know more about these symbols. “It is important that the learners know the symbols that define our national indentity in order to promote nation building to inspire pride in being a South African. The importance of being a citizen of this great nation is when all our people are a living expression of our constitutional values, principles and ideals,” Mabudhafhasi said. A South African flag the minister installed at the school was warmly welcomed by the educators and students. “The department has committed to installing flags in every school to inculcate a spirit of patriotism, nation building and social cohesion. We believe that by installing the flag here the learners will feel the spirit of patriotism every day they see the flag,” she said. Mabudhafhasi told the students that the National Anthem should be sung with the necessary respect. “ All should stand to attention with their hands placed at their sides while singing the National Anthem. Civilians should take their hats off as a sign of respect,” Mabudafhasi said. She further informed them about other national symbols such as the national flower – the king protea, national fish – the galjoen, national bird – the blue crane and national tree, the real yellowwood. Mabudhafhasi was scheduled to visit Ngwanatshwane Secondary in Mamone Village in the Sekhukhune area on Friday where she intended to create awareness in a similar fashion. Grade 6 learner at Pula-Madibogo Primary School, Malose Kganaga said he enjoyed the Deputy Minister’s session about the symbols that define the South African indentify. “It was informative and I have learned a lot. I was not aware of the National Anthem etiquette, because when you see different sport teams on television singing the National Anthem some put their right hands on their chests, others put both hands by their sides. It was confusing then but I am glad the Deputy Minister enlightened us in that regard,” Malose said.

Oosskool se Voëltjiesport vol opwinding BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool) het verlede week hul jaarlikse Voëltjiesport gehou.

Comfort, outright pleasure in the Mercedes-Benz GLA RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

T

Like any other Mercedes-Benz the GLA offers a luxurious interior designed from high quality materials for optimum comfort and safety.

he Mercedes-Benz GLA arrived in Polokwane amid a lot of keen expectation among outdoor enthusiasts as its looks present a combination of sporty lines and style elements characteristic of a sport utility vehicle (SUV). It is more dynamic than a classic sport utility vehicle yet more striking than a coupé and seemingly the ideal vehicle in which to explore the treasures of the Bushveld with family and friends. It offers a great deal of comfort for everyday use and outright pleasure when it comes to options such as panoramic sliding sunroof, variable boot space and connections for devices with internet access. The new GLA unlocks new creativity in the interior. It is the first premium compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz and

meets virtually any personal requirements. The variability of the interior makes this class an extraordinary model series. The availability of an equipment feature depends on engine and selected vehicle configuration. Some optional features include fourway lumber support in the seats, AMG Exclusive package, Easy-Pack liftgate, power driver’s seat with memory function, panoramic roof and heated seats. The GLA is available in diesel and petrol engine models. The directinjection four cylinder diesel engines deliver adequate power reserves and efficient propulsion. They come in two output levels that both demonstrate sustainable qualities, impress with a hefty torque and boast an instant throttle response even in the lower engine speed range. The petrol engines are the qualities of the engines for a new generation: the innovative engines of the new GLA

combine dynamic technology with fuel-saving tools. The high-pressure direct injection via precise piezoelectric injectors and an enhanced combustion process facilitate virtually total combustion and thus higher efficiency, which means that the fuel can be used more efficiently. Improved ignition pressure and turbo charging ensure high torque at any engine speed. The standard ECO start/stop function ensures that the engine is temporarily switched off if the vehicle is stationary, thereby saving fuel. Furthermore, the ECO display in the instrument cluster provides information about your own driving style. Two transmissions are available for the new GLA. Both are already in use to great success in other models of the new generation of compact vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Both transmissions are perfectly tailored to the power output and the many challenges facing the new GLA, and set standards with regard to shift comfort and efficiency. Like any other Mercedes-Benz the GLA also features ample safety features. What began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS, Mercedes-Benz has now advanced into a new dimension in driving: Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive – comfort and safety have now been fused. Thanks to networking safety experts called this sensor fusion - the intelligent assistance systems analyse complex situations and recognise potential traffic dangers better using sensors positioned all round the vehicle. The GLA is available at Mercurius Motors Polokwane. Contact them on 015 299 9500.

Johnny se tyd is 22,46 sekondes.

olokwane City Football Club has fortified their squad by acquiring the services of former Asante Kotoko striker and Ghanaian u.20 star Ransford Osei on a three year contract. General Manager for the club, Costa Bellos said the striker will add value to the team and help them in their quest of finishing the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season in better position. “He is a fighter and we believe he will do the business for the team,” Bellos said.

Osei has also played for Dutch side FC Twente, Bloemfontein Celtic and Maccabi Haifa in Israel. Bellos also confirmed that former Golden Arrows midfielders Thokozani Mshengu and Njabulo Manqana failed to secure contracts at the club following a two week trial with the team. “They did not fit in with the coach’s plans and that why we could not sign them,” Bellos said. City has had a dream run in the PSL this season and is currently in 6th position of the league with 24 points after 17 matches.

Zeca Marques ready to save Leopards New Black Leopards coach Zeca Marques is adamant that his team will finish the league in a better position come the end of the 2014/2015 National First Division (NFD) season in May. Leopards are currently in the 11th position of the NFD with 18 points after 16 matches. Since the departure of Kosta Papic who took the team to the National Play-offs last season, the team has been struggling to regain the form that made it a force to be reckoned with in the 2013/2014 NFD season. In their last 16 matches of the league the Venda based outfit lost eight matches, won five and drew three. They also parted ways with two coaches, Sean Connor from Ireland and former Free State Stars coach Mark Harrison since the

beginning of the 2014/2015 season. Marques, who coached Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits in his career, said his main objective is to help the team to be successful. “I have signed a five months deal with team. The Chairman called me and asked me to help the club and I saw it as a good opportunity. Black Leopards play well, we saw them in the Nedbank Cup and they did well and I just want to help the team to be successful,” Marques said. PHOTO: HERBERT RACHUENE

Competition double ticket winner The winner of the last set of double tickets for the Super 15 warm-up match between the Vodacom Bulls and Toyota Cheetahs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium was regular Polokwane Observer reader Irene Duvenhage who emailed the correct score at 07:57 last Thursday. The correct answer to the question was 26-19 in the Stormers’ favour and a delighted Duvenhage collected her tickets on Friday, the day before the much anticipated match. The two-week competition to win a set of double tickets for the fixture was a result of an exclusive media partnership between Polokwane Observer and Polokwane Municipality. A percentage of the funds gener-

ated during the game will go towards disadvantaged tertiary students from in and around Polokwane.

Jong duikinstrukteur behaal groot mylpaal
