Wanted gang leader on run KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com A massive Police manhunt has been launched following the escape of the ringleader of a gang of recently arrested rape suspects allegedly terrorising the residents of Mankweng. According to Const Moses Molepo from the Mankweng Police Station, Mr Lucas Matome Phoshoko (27) escaped on foot by outrunning no less than four officers who were escorting him from an interrogation room back to the holding cells. The Mankweng Police are offering a reward of R10 000 to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect or information that can lead to his re-arrest. Phoshoko escaped around 21:00 on Monday and Molepo ensures that an internal investigation is underway and that this will determine if any Police officials were negligent. Phoshoko, Messrs Samuel Pheagane Ramollo (22), James Molebaleng Mahlatji (27), Michael Makgoba Mathekga (26) and Charles Mamolotsa Moreroa (24) appeared briefly in the Mankweng Magistrate Court after their arrests and the case was postponed to 18 July to allow time for further investigation. Phoshoko is the suspected ring leader of a gang of five alleged rapists and was arrested in May, bringing to an end the gang’s two year raping spree in the Mankweng area. Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto said Phoshoko and the other suspects allegedly mainly targeted students renting rooms off

campus and those who were walking to and from classes. The suspects supposedly operated in groups of two or three, overpowered the victims, dragged them into the bushes and raped them. In most of these cases the victims were held at gunpoint. “In some instances the suspects broke into the victims’ rooms and

The disbandment of the provincial leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) and ANC Youth League (Ancyl) in the province was a clear indication that Zuma backers are aligning themselves for a final anticipated take-over. Talk was rife earlier in the week that Matlou, Magabe and Mapoulo could be recalled in the light of the possibility of them awarding tenders to potential funders of expelled Ancyl President Julius Malema who is reportedly going to establish a new political platform, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Matshoge said “The PTT never took a decision to recall Comrades Matlou, Magabe and Mapoulo, including Premier Mathale. We are condemning this allegation with contempt. Our doors are open for anybody who seeks clarity about the matter.” A source told Polokwane Observer that the PTT indeed took a decision to recall Mathale and the three mayors. “The PTT is going to take drastic disciplinary action against com-

rades who are spreading rumours in the media. We like to issue a strong warning to anybody who is peddling wrong information about the organisation and its leadership,” said Matshoge. PTT Spokesperson Sello Lediga, however, dismissed speculation that the PTT had asked Luthuli House to give them the green light during their recent meeting to dismiss Mathale. When asked about PTT members who leaked the story to the media, Lediga said: “There was no meeting whatsoever which discussed Mathale’s future.” He also said Zuma is the only one with the power to remove Mathale. “The PTT has no authority to remove Premier Mathale. It is only President Jacob Zuma who can recall him. The PTT is dismissing the allegations with the contempt deserved.” Sources within the ANC further revealed that the PTT in Limpopo is gunning for everybody who did not support Zuma at the Mangaung Conference where he was re-elected as party president. Defending the PTT, Lediga said: “There is no witch hunt whatsoever; the PTT is not gunning for anybody. The ANC in the province is united and we will continue to be united. Such allegations are malicious and therefore we dismiss them.” Mathale, whose father passed away on the weekend, was not available for comment.

A reliable source, who also supplied the name of the deceased, told Polokwane Observer that the woman entered the fire station through the front door at approximately 23:15. She wore a tracksuit and made her way to the approximately 60 m high training tower. It is not clear how she was able to open the front door as it is operated by an electrical magnetic lock. At 01:15 a fire brigade official discovered the naked, injured woman next to the tower where she had plunged into some broken office chairs. It is also not clear why she was

naked when she allegedly fell from the tower. The source said the Police and emergency services were called and the woman taken to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital. At the time of our going to press Otto said the Westenburg Police Station was not yet informed of her death nor was the identity of the victim known to them. “In such incidents the hospital is supposed to inform us in order to open a relevant case. As soon as the Police are notified of her death an inquest docket will be opened,” she said. he Hawks have been relentless in their hunting down of persons suspected of organised crime and corruption in the province subsequent to National Government’s intervention into five provincial departments two years ago. More high flyers are expected to be apprehended in the wake of the latest arrests on Tuesday when two senior officials of the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) who are suspected of R79 million worth of tender fraud were apprehended. Former RAL Chief Executive Officer, Ms Alice Mogotlane and Special Projects Manager, Mr Robert Nemavhola appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They were granted bail of R5 000 each on condition that their passports be handed over to the investigating officer by today (Thursday) when a third suspect is likely to appear. The case was remanded to 15 August. The arrests stem from a project to upgrade and extend road D4137 from Penge to Mankele in 2010. It is alleged that RAL awarded the contract for the construction of the road and a bridge over the Olifants River to the value of R46 671 876.59 to a company in November 2010. On 17 November RAL allegedly awarded the same contract to another construction company and to the same value. The contract was supposedly awarded on a single supplier basis and, because of the urgency of the project, did not go out on open tender but was specifically approved based on the fact that a Mabey Compact 200 bridge would be supplied,

Hawks Spokesperson, Paul Ramaloko said the quality of the bridge is also not what it was intended to be. “A solid concrete bridge was supposed to be built but instead only steel was used. They also inflated the price by more than 70% of the original price,” he said. According to the charge sheet the amount was continuously increased, first from R46 671 876.59 to R64 431 550.42 and then to R79 518 404.52, thereby creating a total increase in the original price of more than 70%. Mogotlane and Nemabhola allegedly did not adhere to the Supply Chain Management Policy of RAL. The charge sheet clearly states that both accused unlawfully, falsely and with intent to defraud presented the RAL Executive Committee with misleading information.

Toe hulle Sondagoggend weer gevoer is het Pienaar opgemerk dat twee nie daar is nie. Een met ‘n strik om een van sy pote en ligte beserings is later gevind. Na nog ‘n lang soektog is Kochlani Imran dood onder ‘n boom met ‘n strik styf om die nek gespan, gekry. Pienaar het gesê almal wat by die soektog betrokke was, was hoogs onsteld en woedend toe hulle gesien het hoe die perd takke van die boom afgebreek het in ‘n poging om uit die strik te ontsnap. Dit was duidelik dat hy wild gespook en waarskynlik ondraaglike pyn ervaar het voordat hy verwurg het. Die waarde van die perd beloop sowat R50 000. “Die stel van strikke deur wildstropers is al lank ‘n probleem op die plaas en in die gebied,” het Pienaar verduidelik. “In die verlede is van die beeste op die plaas ook in strikke gevang, maar het nie so tragiese einde gehad nie,” sê Pienaar. Volgens hom is dit ook die eerste keer dat strikke so na aan die plaashuis ontdek is en het bygevoeg dat die probleem ‘n groot kopseer vir boere in die omgewing is. Lede van die Westenburg Polisiestasie het Sondag die toneel ondersoek. Volgens Westenburg Polisiestasie-woordvoerder, kaptein Mothlaka Mashiane is ‘n saak nie Sondag ge-

he Human Rights Commission (HRC) in the province on Friday agreed to a request by the Democratic Alliance (DA) that the appalling conditions under which the people of Disteneng informal settlement in Polokwane live be investigated. An estimated 27 000 people live in the settlement sharing 20 self-made toilets and only three taps for water. The community has existed for more than a decade now and not a single basic service delivery measure has been provided to them. Mr Victor Mavhidula, Provincial Manager for the HRC said they are going to verify the information at their disposal and carry out the inspection themselves. “Sanitation is an essential service in the country and our mandate is to investigate all human rights violations. We don’t know when we are going to inspect the area but we are going to do our own investigation,” Mavhidula said. During their oversight visit by the DA on Friday, the party found horrifying levels of neglect from

government. “There is virtually no government sponsored sanitation and people have to resort to constructing very dangerous structures to use as toilets. There is no place to dispose of water or refuse and the area has turned into a health hazard. “The Limpopo government should at least be providing some level of basic service delivery such as toilets and more taps for running water. There is also an urgent need for temporary measures to be put in place while these services are being rolled out. The DA trusts the HRC will conduct a thorough investigation and put pressure on government to deliver for the people of Disteneng,” DA Provincial Leader, Mr Jacques Smalle said. One of the female residents, Ms Motamma Kgomoswana said she is no longer using the self made toilets but the bush. “The toilets can collapse anytime. As a citizen of this country I think we deserve better not this substandard treatment we are getting from our government. Just imagine a woman relieving herself in the bush, in this day and age,” Kgomoswana said.

embers of the South African Police Union (Sapu) in Limpopo have expressed discontent at the apparent over protection of former African National Congress Youth League President, Julius Malema during his court appearance in Polokwane on Thursday and Friday. Sapu Provincial Secretary, Mr Solly Bulala said more than half of the province’s Police were deployed in the vicinity of the court building where Malema and his co-assused appeared. “It is wrong and inappropriate to have so many Police officers guarding one person whose status no longer requires it. Malema is just an ordinary person. He is not even a threat. I still don’t understand why must he be guarded so majestically. There were other

cases that needed the attention of the officers. It looked as if our officers were honouring Malema more than doing their job. We view the whole process as waste of resources and tax payers’ money because the very same officials could have attended other high risk areas,” Bulala said. Bulala further stated that about 1 000 police officers were deployed at the court to safeguard the premises in- and outside. “The word from our members is they did not get their overtime pay. Instead the management is offering them a day off. That is inappropriate. I still think they could have analysed the situation and put some members on standby,” Bulala said. Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto said members were deployed to deal with any incident when it arose immediately instead of being called in and delaying response time. “The South African Police Service must be prepared and ready for any eventuality. Information received beforehand is analysed and assessed and operations and actions planned accordingly. Sapu also knows very well that they have an open platform to meet with the management of the SAPS in the province where they can raise their grievances to be addressed, instead of taking internal matters to the media for discussion,” Otto said.

Vavi lambasts labour brokers MPHO DUBE >>mphodube.observer@gmail.com Cosatu General Secretary, Mr Zwelinzima Vavi said labour brokers are parasites in the employment relationship who supply workers to do jobs that already exist and which, in many cases, would previously have been permanent full-time jobs. Vavi, known to be a strong critic of the ANC under President Jacob Zuma’s leadership, was addressing more than 1 000 union members during the Provincial Young Workers Forum held at Bolivia Lodge on Saturday. “They (labour brokers) negotiate a fee with the so-called ‘client’ firm for supplying stipulated labour services for a given period. While they get rich through this trade in labour, the workers are exploited worse than ever. Most of the workers supplied and employed by labour brokers earn low wages, do not enjoy any benefits, receive no training and have virtually no job security,” Vavi told his audience. He took a swipe at Zuma’s administration for failing to completely ban labour brokers and instead agree that they would continue in operation for periods of three months. That, despite MPs having voted for more regulations to prevent what they concede to be abusive practices by labour brokers. “That is why we make no apology for calling it human trafficking and a modern form of slavery. We cannot agree with government that increased regulation of the labour brokering industry will stop all its abuses. The Department of Labour can’t enforce current regulation of employment conditions and safety, let

alone adding another area of enforcement,” Vavi said. He however, said the main debate with the ANC, which shall be resuming in two weeks at an Alliance Economic Summit meeting, is on the broader issue of how we the economy can be transformed so that it provides more jobs, creates more wealth and distributes that wealth in a far more equitable fashion. “Our commitment to support the ANC has never been based on giving them a blank cheque. The workers will never allow even their staunch allies to take them for granted. We will always take our mandate from the membership, especially at our ‘Workers’ Parliament’ our three-yearly National Congress, whose resolutions and declarations are the basis for the federation for the next three years, and beyond if those policies are not changed by later congresses. If those policies conflict with those of government and our ANC allies, we will not keep quiet, but argue, debate, and if all else fails take to the streets to mobilise the workers,” Vavi said. In reacting to the progress made during the forum, Cosatu Provincial Secretary, Mr Dan Sebabi said the forum was flourishing, stressing that the union has embarked on engaging, encouraging and reaching out to young people to join Cosatu. “Our membership is growing and the forum went well. The forum projected to identify 15 young shop stewards between 18-40 years. “This platform was intended to enable young workers to voice out their frustrations in Limpopo and develop an action programme,” Sebabi said.

Ms Fortunate Mokgehle, President of the structure said during the meeting that they will focus on enterprise development and skills development which is in line with the provincial growth strategy. “The programmes are aimed to capacitate entrepreneurs across the following sectors: Manufacturing, Mining, Agriculture, Tourism, Retail, Information Technology, Green Economy and Construction. The scope of impact is all five districts of the province. Small, medium and micro enterprises will be assisted to position themselves to be able to exploit the opportunities that are presented in the National Development Plan of Government. The structure has the task of identifying the various challenges facing youth enterprises and engaging stakeholders to come up with solutions that are practical and relevant,” Mokgehle said.

“The vision of Nafcoc Youth is colossal and it requires commitment and persistence. The young business people of Limpopo need to get rid of entitlement mentality and focus on acquiring the necessary qualifications and accreditations that are relevant to their industries. “We need to take ourselves seriously as business people in order for us to be taken seriously as competitors and contenders for markets and opportunities. We must polish our business acumen to world standards. Our challenge now goes beyond building sustainable ventures, but becoming global contributors in quality, creativity, technology and innovation across all sectors of the economy. We will champion the inclusion and participation of youth in empowerment programmes and challenge youth unemployment and skills drainage from our province. Youth is the future. If we neglect our youth, we have no future as a society,” Mokgehle said. Messrs Mojalefa Ntsoana (Deputy President), Khomotjo Mangwale (Secretary General), Mss Phumudzo Munyai (Deputy Secretary General) and Innocentia Tloubatla (Treasurer) make up the rest of the sector’s executive committee.

A tall order according to Mr Tumi Mokoena, defence attorney of former African National Congress Youth League President, Julius Malema who is standing trial on charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court after the case was postponed to 19 to 29 November. Following a two day court sitting last week Magistrate Mohammed Shaik on Friday evening decided to postpone the case. Three unlucky individuals were nabbed on Tuesday following the confiscation of alleged illegal cigarettes with a combined street value of over R100 000. Acting on information received from the public, the Polokwane Police went in search and confiscated cigarettes from various locations around the Polokwane area. said after about nine boxes of cigarettes, two black plastic bags full of cigarettes and some loose cartons of cigarette were seized. The three suspects will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court within 48 hours and will stand accused on charges related but not limited to the Customs and Excise Act No 91 of 1964, since they are alleged to have possessed and sold cigarettes that are illegal and did not have the South African Diamond Stamp, the quit line number and the reduced ignition propensity marking to name but a few direct contraventions to the above mentioned act. A usually quiet Sunday turned into a day filled with carnage when a minibus collided with a car on the N1 near Kranskop in Limpopo. According to Ms Kagiso Motane, spokesperson for the Limpopo Traffic Department, the minibus driver lost control of his speeding vehicle when its tyre burst. “It collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz and both the vehicles then caught fire.” She went on to say that the accident resulted in ten deaths, including both drivers and eight passengers from the minibus. “Nine of the victims were burnt beyond recognition,” Motane said. The other injured on the scene where rushed to the nearest hospital in Modimolle.

Col Ronel Otto, Spokesperson of the South African Police Service also confirmed the accident and added that one body has so far been identified. “We have asked families who think they have relatives who were involved in the accident to furnish us with their DNA samples so we can match it with those of the unidentified bodies,” Otto told Polokwane Observer on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses on the scene said it was impossible to help the victims in the car and that the burning vehicles were completely inaccessible. “The road the accident happened on is generally a very scary road due to the fact that the section of road from Modimolle to Polokwane is a single lane road with speeding taxis everywhere,” an eyewitness said.

Before visiting Limpopo, the department has already held public consultations in Gauteng, North-West, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern and Western Cape to inform stakeholders of the envisaged changes to the Gas Act No 48 of 2001, which was signed into law on 21 February 2002. The Act only came into effect in 2005 with the promulgation of regulations made under it and the establishment of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) which encompasses the existing gas regulations. The decision to solicit public comments for the Draft Gas Amendment Bill was approved by Cabinet on 17 April. The window period for the submission of comments for or against the amendments is only open until 3 July. Speaking on behalf of the Department of Energy, the Director for Coal and Gas, Mr Landi Themba said a sustainable and reliable energy supply is the backbone of economic development in South Africa. He added the existing Act needs to be amended to adapt to modern challenges and the need for alternate sources of energy like clean coal technology, natural gas, wind and solar energy. Recent development in respect of shale gas in particular both locally and internationally also demand regulatory certainty. Themba said the envisaged growth of new electricity generation in SA will be shared as follows; nuclear (23%), coal (15%), open cycle gas turbines (9%), imported gas (6%) and the balance from wind and solar energy. The objective of the Gas Amendment Bill is to promote the orderly development of gas industries to enhance the national regulatory framework to provide for socio-economic and environmental sustainable development to promote regional and international cooperation on the future use of gas as an alternate energy source. Lower unemployment and poverty alleviation has been an ongoing process.” He stated the reason why Limpopo should move their growth trajectory through industrial diversification job creation. “The positive economic growth over the past decades did not translate into sustainable employment

opportunities and Limpopo lag far behind in its ability to create sufficient and sustainable jobs. Limpopo’s competitiveness in terms of export growth is volatile as the bulk of Limpopo’s exports consist of mining, agriculture and other commodities which make up around 85% of the total export basket. Limpopo has a well established trade base and the economic performance of the province shows volatile movement over the past decades. The dependency of the province’s economy on agriculture and mining imposes a big impediment on the actual as well as the potential level of economic growth.” Mafadza added that though Leda is confronted with poverty in several regions, underdeveloped regions, insufficient attention paid to a long term perspective of building sustainable economic regions, inadequate promotion of a broad-based industrialisation path, and insufficient efforts to address severe structural imbalances, there are encouraging signs that Limpopo’s economy’s long-term growth potential is deepening and sustainable. Chabane informed the gathering that the implementation of the NDP will be presented during Cabinet’s Lekgotla in July.

A new contractor was expected to be appointed in January when builders reopened after the December holidays. Mr Phasha Makgolane, Spokesperson for the implementing agent, Independent Development Trust (IDT) responded to the latest query by Polokwane Observer saying: “The

appointment (of the new contractor) is at adjudication stage at the moment. As soon as that stage is done I should be able to give you the name of the successful contractor.” The deadline for the completion of the construction on the Polokwane High Court was missed for a third time at the end of October last year. At the time Makgolane cited contractual disagreement with the construction company as the only reason. The appointed contractor at that time, Sanyati Munaka Construction apparently repudiated the contract on 17 October. The construction was also initially delayed due to the hard rock surface and a natural fountain found on the building site.

Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto confirmed that the report was received from the forensic team two weeks ago and will be added to the docket opened at the time of the incident. “We can, however, not reveal any information from the report yet. The docket will now be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). The DPP will then access the docket

after which it will be forwarded to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),” Otto said. The NPA will then have to make the final decision if anyone is to be charged. On Friday, 19 October Polokwane came to standstill when the Magistrate’s Court suddenly burst out in flames. Despite nearly every fire fighter from the city being deployed on the scene the fire brigade’s efforts to control the flames were in vain. Desperate measures have had to be put in place to keep court proceedings on the roll. The Pietersburg Attorney’s Association released a contingency plan for the week following the fire. The personnel of the Magistrate’s Court have since been housed in the building of the High Court.

It is only when he boldly starts reciting the poetry that pours from his soul that he causes one to stop breathing. The world becomes a blur when he speaks the words he so freely engages in. He has always had a love affair with language, sparked by attentively paying attention to the crafting of traditional verse when sometimes secretly listening to conversations entered into by his father, a principal of an initiation school in the Free State, while Ntsasa was growing up. He has always found the province of his birth rich in language and creative writing. It is, however, to Limpopo that this software developer turned when pursuing work opportunities some two years back. To Ntsasa the languages of Limpopo hold an appeal and he regards the people very diverse in terms of expression of their language, but still not as rich as their immediate neighbours in other provinces or Mozambique and Botswana. Since his arrival he has mastered Tshivenda and Tshitsonga. He is fond of the province which he describes as beautiful. He compares nature here to a small Eden. When it comes to the written word he has an insatiable curiosity to investigate the origin of words and constantly embarks on a journey of discovery through reading. His collection of poetry and literature at home includes works from writers dating back to the 1800s, he says. His passion for the written word prominently comes to the fore in the upcoming launch of Poetry, a body of work he started on in 2002. In the book, which he labels as unique, he tackles the 61 known types of poems that exist. Contributing to the work being extraordinary is the longest known palindrome that has apparently ever been written to his knowledge. Titled “Til I Sill It”, it is a poem of 220 words of which the meaning could be interpreted in the same way when written forward or reversed. The closest to that is a poem he discovered written in 1940 containing 126 words. It must have been much more difficult during those days because the writer did not have online dictionaries for research purposes, he quips. Ntsasa explains it took him many months of sleepless nights without disturbance to come up with the poem. To the question that he somehow constructed an entirely new language, he agreed by saying it meant the involvement of mathematics. When he launches his book in a few months’ time, the buyer would indeed be purchasing a part of his soul, he indicates. Upon conclusion of the interview he delivers a potent rendition of a well-crafted poem that speaks of brilliance. And then another and another. With the words he so eloquently utters he jolts to a halt one’s heart and digs into one’s soul with well-considered sentences constructed so powerfully. It should be safe to say that there was a day when the world was touched by the exceptional play of words produced by one man.

Die bekende dieselwerktuigkundige het haar dogter, Marchalize ingeskryf vir die kompetisie. “Toe ons daar opdaag het die organiseerders gevra dat ek ook vir die ouer as twintig ka-

tegorie van die kompetisie inskryf,” het Beukes verduidelik. “Ek is lief vir enige uitdaging, maar het in my wildste drome nooit verwag om die derde plek te behaal en ‘n lid van Impact Models te wees nie,” het sy gesê. Haar dogter het ook presteer in die kategorie vir meisies 11 tot 12 jaar oud en algeheel sesde plek geëindig. Beide ma en dogter is lede van Impact Models. Beukes het vertel dat sy haar eerste ervaring op die loopplank baie geniet het en oorweeg om dalk haar dieselwerktuigkundige waardighede

vir ‘n loopbaan in die modewêreld te veruil. Sy en haar dogter is ook trots om, as deel van hul verpligtinge as lede van Impact Models, by die Smiley Care projek vir mishandelde kinders betrokke te raak. Be on the lookout for a group of men standing at the restaurant entrance of Mall of the North tomorrow (Friday) night selling blankets for those suffering through the cold winter. These men are from the Round Table Impala 157 who, in conjunction with Limpopo Toyota and Mall of the North takes on their annual Winter Knights project. Messrs Donovan Snyman and Martel Daniels from the Round Table said this project gives them the opportunity to help the needy and by doing so they do their part for the community. They are proud to be associated with the Toyota Knights of Limpopo Toyota who annually serve the community in various ways. Limpopo Toyota has generously confirmed that every Rand raised by the Knights will be matched to a maximum of R10 000. Snyman said their goal is to donate 1 000 blankets to various organisa-

tions in the city at the end of the project. He explained that they buy blankets at Levant Home and Decor, sells it at Mall of the North and with the money earned, buys more blankets that will be donated. He said that the community have the opportunity to donate the blanket they bought back to the project to allow them to raise more money.

Ms René van der Merwe, Marketing Manager at Mall of the North said they are proud to join hands with Round Table Impala 157. Bolivia warms up the elderly citizens HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Bolivia Lodge through its winter blanket drive brought warmth and joy to residents of Martha Hofmeyr Old Age Home last Thursday when 100 blankets were handed over to the home. Bolivia Lodge also supplied some scrumptious cupcakes which were enjoyed by the residents and their caregivers. Marketing Manager for Bolivia Lodge, Ms Sonja Randall said with the gesture they are recognising the role of the senior citizens and their immense contribution in our lives. “Our senior citizens have contributed a lot to our lives. We felt we should do something for them. With the blankets we hope they find warmth and comfort during this cold winter season,” Randall said. She added that they will continue with the drive and also plan to include other old age homes in the city. “Martha Hofmeyr was our first stop and we are planning to hand out more blankets to other old age homes in city and surrounding areas,” Randall said.

Mongolian Dream Circus visits city KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com Fun, fearlessness and acrobatic delight epitomised performances by the Mongolian Dream Circus who visited Polokwane over the weekend. Although the turn-out for both their shows on Saturday and Sunday was feeble this did not deter the artists from giving attending locals exactly what they signed up for when they bought their tickets. Young faces lit up and laughter filled the circus tent every few minutes, ensuring a fun evening for one and all. Acts ranged from clowns and acrobats, to trapeze acts, death defying stunts and super strong men handling and catapulting heavy objects few circus goers could even lift up with both their hands. The circus was formed in 1987 in Mongolia and together this group of artists has travelled the world. After years of performing they decided to settle in sunny South Africa. The Dream Circus has been touring South Africa since 1998, giving each town they stop in the chance to experience the circus as they’ve only seen on television before.

ie plaaslike Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) het ‘n nuwe blaadjie omgeslaan met dié dat hulle nie net ‘n nuwe komitee het nie, maar ook van voorneme is om die gemeenskap én die diere in hul sorg ten volle te dien en enige negatiewe persepsies wat die gemeenskap oor die vereniging het, summier uit die weg te ruim. Die nuwe komitee wat vroeër vanjaar die leisels oorgeneem het en opgewonde uitsien na hul taak as beskermhere van die diere in die stad, is mnre Michael Herring (tesourier), Eddy Caldeira (addisionele lid), Johann Loubser (voorsitter), Anton du Bruyn (DBV Polokwane-bestuurder), mee Tania le Roux (sekretaresse), Moira Crocker (insamelaar), Gail Amos (addisionele lid), Morgane James (opleiding) en Debbie Mouton (addisionele lid). Een van die eerste wanpersepsies wat hulle wil aanspreek is die aannemingsproses van die diere in hul sorg. Volgens Du Bruyn gee hulle nie diere weg nie en verkoop hulle ook nie. “Die publiek kom na die vereniging en bied aan om diere aan te neem. As hulle hoor dat ‘n fooi en behoorlike inspeksie betrokke is, is hulle baie verbaas. Dié fooi is om die nodige prosedures soos enting, sterilisering en dip teen bosluise en vlooie te betaal om na die algemene welstand van diere om te

sien,” vertel Du Bruyn. Die omstandighede van die persoon wat die dier aanneem word behoorlik ondersoek voor die aannemingsproses begin. “Die DBV maak seker dat daar genoegsame spasie is en dat die dier by die persoon of familie se lewenswyse sal kan inpas. Ons neem die hoeveelheid kinders in die gesin ook in ag sowel as die nuwe eienaar se bereidwilligheid om die dier die nodige aandag en liefde te gee,” sê hy. Nog ‘n wanpersepsie wat die DBV wil regstel, is die diere wat deur middel van genadedood van kant gemaak word. Du Bruyn sê die gemeenskap het in die verlede in opstand gekom weens genadedood, maar dit is omdat hulle nie die proses verstaan nie. “Ons hou daarby dat ons teen genadedood van geskikte en gesonde diere gekant is, maar aanvaar die realiteit dat dit nodig is as die dier nie binne die toegelate tyd aangeneem word nie,” vertel hy. Hy verduidelik dat genadedood algemeen aanvaar word as ‘n manier om lyding te beëindig en dit is presies wat hulle doen as die diere nie geskikte huise kry nie. Hy sê hul definisie van lyding sluit

lewenslange opsluiting wat die vryheid van natuurlike gedrag kelder, geestelike lyding en spanning in. Dit sluit ook die aanhouding van wilde diere, wat nie gerehabiliteer kan word nie, in. Du Bruyn verduidelik dat diere wat langer as twee weke in ‘n hok gehou word, gedragsprobleme ontwikkel en die kans op aanneming verskraal. “Dit is hartseer dat daar tans geen alternatief is nie. Tot die teling en handeldryf van diere beheer word, sal die DBV ingryp om die negatiewe nadraai wat soms ontstaan, te hanteer,” sê hy. Du Bruyn nooi almal om hulle te besoek by hul nuwe perseel op die Roodepoort kleinhoewe of hulle by 015 291 1088 te skakel. Die komitee nooi ook diereliefhebbers om tyd uit hul besige skedules te neem om met die diere te speel. “Doen só jou deel vir diere en wees verseker dat die tyd wat jy saam met hulle spandeer, opreg waardeer word,” sê Loubser.

Voorgereg: Eendborsies met balsamiese asynjellie en heuningblokkies: Asynjellie: 150 ml balsamiese asyn en 5 g agar-agar. Verhit asyn tot kookpunt en roer agar-agar by. Verkoel in yskas tot gestol en sny in blokkies. Heuningblokkies: 125 ml heuning, 80 ml water en 5 g agar-agar. Bring heuning en water tot kookpunt en voeg agar-agar stelselmatig by. Verkoel in yskas tot gestol en sny in blokkies. Prik die vel van die eendborsies en geur met sout en peper. Braai borsies met velkant na onder vir 7 minute, draai om en braai vir 5 minute. A field of 120 golfers received a special invitation to participate in Thursday’s Audi Quattro Cup at the Polokwane Golf Club. Every year, thousands of golfers around the world play in Audi-sponsored tournaments. There is the international Audi Amateur Golf Tournament in Germany, and Audi’s most sought after tournament – the Audi Quattro Cup – rated as the most prestigious amateur golf tournament in the world. The tournament will be held for the 23rd year internationally and for the 21st time in South Africa during 2013. The South African leg consists of 12 regional events, with the regional winners going on to play at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The winners of the Zimbali tournament will represent SA at the world finals in Los Angeles later in the year. The Audi Quattro Cup is played over 18 holes according to the Greensomes Stableford format. Four players tee off together, with two players forming a team. The pairings select the best drive and then play alternate shots from there onwards. The pair with the best score wins and goes on to play at Zimbali Resort. The Executive Mayor of Polokwane,

Freddy Greaver and his partner, Zipho Ngobeni clinched third place on 40 points after a count-out. In second position on 42 points were Aaron Segwapa and Peter Masehela. The ecstatic winners on 43 points were the pairing

of Duane Viljoen and Andrew Galloway. At the prize giving ceremony afterwards, Audi South Africa gave the local golfing fraternity a preview of the many exciting new models that Audi will be launching during the

latter half of the year. Dealer Principal for Audi Polokwane, Gary Carlisle thanked the golfers for participating in Audi’s flagship tournament and wished the regional winners all of the best for the national tournament in July.

Old and young enjoy Cars in the Park KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com Cars, cars and more cars were the order of the day on Saturday after another successful Cars in the Park took place on the fields of Generaal Piet Joubertskool. Old and young joined in the festivities as some of the newest and oldest antique and super cars were showcased. Among some of these treasures on display we found Mr Hennie Enslin and his brown 1938 Chevrolet Coupe with a Dicky seat. A highly experienced antique renovator like Enslin patiently explained the ins and outs of refurbishing and redoing of an old lady like his Coupe. “I spent 12 months from the purchase of the car renovating and making sure I have all the parts that I need. Hard work and patience is the key to owning a successful antique like this.” Enslin spent approximately R 120 000 to create the final product we saw

on display on Saturday. Mr Hennie Pohl was another antique enthusiast who blessed showgoers with his all-round know how. He spent three months and R55 000 on finishing his masterpiece 1968 Datsun Blue Bird. “It was hard work but thankfully I could do most of the labour myself and thus saved on the extra costs which could have been incurred.” Mrs Micky van Rensburg, organiser of this year’s event boasts that the turn-

out and all-round success of the event is almost double the amounts of last year’s show. “We are very grateful to those who came and supported us and hope next year will be even better. Year by year we will grow and have more entertainment for you.” Dates for the next Cars in the Park will be released later.

While their peers are taking a break this

holiday the girls would be holding the flag(s) high at the nine-day national event, keeping in mind the wish of Principal Phuti Ragophala for the trophy to remain in the host province. The excited troupe performed their moves during a visit by Polokwane Observer on Thursday, ahead of the school closing for the holidays the fol-

lowing day. It was an impromptu show thoroughly enjoyed by their cheering fellow-learners who looked on as they rehearsed in full gear armed with props. The headstrong ensemble, trained by Ms Nelly Sehlapelo assisted by several colleagues, was adamant that they were going for a win and would

want to defend the trophy they won last year. And with their smart moves lined up, they hold the promise of being strong contenders. The championships are expected to get underway tomorrow and come to a close on 6 July and promise entertainment enhanced by artistic and innovative displays.

Pebetsy Sebothoma, the local fashion designer chosen by the couple to design their outfits, said they can look forward to lots of bright colours, enough flair and heaps of bling. “To complement their dance style we decided to dress them in slim fitting master pieces with some bounce that will allow them to move freely,” said Sebothoma. She added that she is very excited to work with the Kochs because when it comes to fashion and design, they speak the same language. “Because they are vibrant and young there is nothing stopping them to go all out and be brave – and brave they are,” Sebothoma said. Adri said although they are both rather short and the Jive moves are a bit difficult, they enjoy every minute of their training. “We entered this competition for fun, it will be a bonus if we win,” she said. The couple is very excited to work with Sebothoma and trust that they chose the best designer in town. “She is definitely good at what she does and we know that she will deliver the best results ever when it’s time for us to impress the judges,” Adri said. The couple attends extra dance classes at Jama Ballroom Dance Studio where they have discovered the Jive to be much more than just bouncing across the floor. “We learn to move very fast and it is definitely very energy consuming. The added bonus is that we get a quality workout while enjoying the classes,” Adri said.

tanford Lake College (SLC) recently hosted their annual sporting derby against Beaulieu College from Gauteng during which the different teams engaged in hockey, netball, mountain biking and rugby. SLC performed well against Beaulieu College. Although the visitors are known for their competence on the hockey field the home advantage was to SLC’s benefit this time. The u.15 girls played with determination to draw 1-1 while the boys completely dominated their match with Mfumo Mongwe and Adam McGaffin scoring the goals for a final score of 3-0. The second boys’ team dominated their game and won 3-0 in a display of coordinated team performance while the second girls’ team had tough competition and lost 1-0. The first boys’ team expected a very tough game and Beaulieu’s team indeed dominated the first half after which SLC turned the tables to draw 0-0. The girls’ first team triumphed 2-1 in a well

contested match. SLC’s Mountain bikers completely dominated their Beaulieu counterparts during an early morning contest on Saturday. Jason Stroud won the senior boys’ category, Benno Prinsloo the junior boys’, and Sarah Pogrund the junior girls’ categories. The u.14 netball girls’ team dominated on the courts once again. They started off slowly but pulled away to end the match 14-4. Shikara Janke was on form with her shooting and Anke Vaughan and Funi Thovhakale had a phenomenal game defending their shooters, constantly preventing the ball from going near their goal. The u.15s and u.17s both had good games but allowed their opponents to take the lead in both games and never regained control. Both teams boast talented players and with more experience have a great future. The second team once again played some great netball displaying solid defence. Mmampi Mangena and Chikho Majuba showed exceptional skill in the circle. After a tight first half, the teams were even and through solid determination won by two

goals. The first team ended their season with a tight game. Beaulieu play a very high standard of netball and have had a successful season. SLC’s girls came onto the court with grit and purpose. Amber-Lee de Villiers and Lalla Shipalana put pressure on their opposition’s attacks and made some super interceptions in the circle. Cassie McGaffin held it together in the mid-court and as always, brought some calm to a tense game. Michelle Pilusa and Roelien Prinsloo played well together and moved the ball cleverly around the circle to get some great goals. In the end, Beaulieu managed to clinch a victory though. The rugby matches were all good fixtures and all three SLC Teams showed some great heart. The u.15s played really well and earned a victory. The second team faced a good opponent and lost 0-7 in a tightly contested match. The first team beat Beaulieu with a convincing 17–7. Thabang Mathale turned forced errors by the opposition into two great tries. Brandon Wright showed great strength and skill in both attack and defence, and shared the Man of the Match award with Thabang.

More legends to be born at Craven Week As school rugby players around the country gear up for the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Coca-Cola Craven Week from 8 to 13 July at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium it is worth looking back and paying homage to the Limpopo rugby stars that have gone before and who inspired youngsters to greatness. Over the years Limpopo has had no shortage of rugby prowess and boasts players like John Smit, Victor Matfield, Gavin Johnson, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Dean Greyling, Deon Fourie, Adolf Malan, Arno Botha, Trevor Nyakane, Harold Vorster, Hencus van Wyk and Joe Snyman who all came from the region. Of these achieving sportsmen, four of them passed through the Coca-Cola Craven Week ranks: John Smit (Noord Transvaal, 1996), Victor Matfield (Far North, 1994 to 1995), Chiliboy Rallepele (Blue Bulls, 2002) and Dean Greyling (Blue Bulls, 2004). Smit, former Springbok Captain who hoisted the Webb Ellis Cup for South Africa at the 2007 Rugby World Cup, needs no introduction. He also holds the title of the most-capped Springbok of all time with 111 Test caps, and is the most-capped international captain. Victor Matfield was arguably the best lock in world rugby during his era, and with Smit they are two of only three Springbok Test players to have achieved that honour, Percy Montgomery being the third. Ralepelle made

his debut for the Springboks in 2006, has played 21 tests and has just recently signed on to play in France after a phenomenal spell for the Bulls. Interestingly enough, both Smit and Ralepelle went to Pretoria Boys High School, played hooker and captained the Springboks (albeit in an unofficial international against the World XV). This clash also earned Ralepelle the honour of being the first black player to ever captain a senior national team. Limpopo has always had a rich rural rugby heritage and is strongly represented at all levels. Last year saw the Limpopo Blue Bulls emerge as one of the strongest sides at the u.13 Coca-Cola Craven Week and the province is fortunate enough to host both the u.13 and u.18 Coca-Cola Craven Weeks this year. The u.13 tournament is currently held in Bela-Bela and will end tomorrow (Friday). The u.18 Limpopo Blue Bulls team is coached by André Hay from Hoërskool Ben Vorster and the home team will tackle Boland on the opening day of the tournament. First sport award dinner for Mitchell House learners WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Mitchell House’s inaugural Sport Awards Dinner to honour the sporting achievements of learners and coaches was held last Wednesday. Guest speaker Charl Naudé, who coaches a number of top middle distance athletes in South Africa, had the learners, parents and personnel from the school enthralled with a motivational presentation on what it takes to reach the top of your sporting code. The X-factor, according to Naudé, is to give that little bit of extra effort when the chips are

down. He likened it to the one extra degree of temperature necessary to get water to boil. Players from the Preparatory and College netball and soccer teams all received awards. Certificates were awarded to the most improved players and learners who were voted as the best players by their fellow learners. Tshego Boshielo was the first team College Soccer Player of the Year and Babi Sebatjane won the award at the Preparatory School. Thoriso Rampedi was the first team Netball Player of the Year, with Salphina Lekganyane scooping the award at the Preparatory School.

impopo Tourism Agency (LTA) welcomes the many rugby fans and teams expected to descend on the province from 7 to 13 July when the Coca-Cola u.18 Craven Week Rugby tournament is held in the city. The massive rugby event which is scheduled for Old Peter Mokaba Stadium will see the top nine provincial rugby teams battling each other on field of play. Mr Nocks Seabi, LTA Chief Executive Officer said: “We welcome all the delegates, the players and organisers. We are elated to host such a big tournament and we promise that we will not disappoint.” “This is a big a tournament for us, it forms part of sports tourism which remains one of the three important segments of our Domestic Umbrella Marketing Campaign themed ‘Tour With Us’ ‘Celebrate With Us’ and ‘Play With

Us’. ‘Play With Us’ encapsulates all the sporting activities that take place in the province by which people are encouraged to fill up the playgrounds by way of support or play.” “Being given the opportunity to host such a tournament shows that as a province we are on a growth path in sports tourism and we are highly privileged to be part of all these huge developments. “We are calling upon all the teams and supporters to take advantage of the various unique and iconic tourism offerings that the province has to offer after long days on the field. Our committed and dedicated officials will be on duty for information about various ideal packages on offer. We further urge all the citizens of the province to go out in their numbers to support the teams. eft to right, top to bottom and corner to corner. Horizontally, vertically and diagonally. To us this sounds like rambling but to Oarabile Moanakoena (5), this is how she starts every single chess game she plays. Other little girls her age prefer playing with dolls but this little chess champion in the making spends her time pushing around pawns in an attempt to become the next Viswanathan Anand. Orabile attends Jabez Christian School in Polokwane and is currently in Grade RR. She started developing a love for chess last

year whilst taking part in the school’s Mini Chess Programme. “I received the cup last year for the best chess player in the age group 5 to 9.” Oarabile was chosen as the best and most promising player in an age group she does not even compete in yet. Rina du Toit has been a chess coach for over 19 years and is proud to have Oarabile under her experienced wings. “I noticed last year whilst busy with coaching the Mini Chess that she grasps things very quickly”. Du Toit explains that thanks to her heightened skills in concentration and memory paired with her ability to listen intently at what she’s told has enabled her to grasp a usually complicated game easily. “She is still very young and we are still honing her skills but as from next year she will start competing in regional competitions.” “I love chess and I always feel very clever when I beat people. I get better every day because my mommy bought me my own chess board”. Mother Lebogang and father Gift are extremely proud of their little girl. Lebogang explains that discipline is very important when it comes to raising her children

and this is a great benefit in helping her master chess. “She loves playing chess against her brother (8) and unlike other brothers, he does not get angry when she beats him.” She further explains that he is very protective over his little sister and always tells everyone how proud he is of her. Principal of Jabez Christian School, Elana Erasmus watches on like a proud mother hen as Oarabile skillfully arrangesthe chessboard and explains to us how each and every chess piece moves. She says that other than chess skills, Mini Chess also enables children to improve their mathematical and analytical skills which make brighter learners when it comes to their school work. “We quickly noticed she was very bright and can’t wait for next year when she will be making us even prouder by competing against other schools and learners.” The old saying that dynamite always comes in small packages rings very true but even better put is that this little pawn is getting ready to eat queens in a world called Chess.
