Stan’s good news blueprint for developing Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha during a post Sopa interview.

t was not all bad tidings when Premier Stan Mathabatha took to the podium to deliver his second State of the Province address (Sopa) on Tuesday. Despite criticism from opposition parties, he brought his people news of a tenpoint blueprint aimed at, among others, having created an estimated 430 000

jobs five years from now. In his 37-page address coinciding with the opening of the Legislature in Lebowakgomo, he shared the targets of the recently crafted Limpopo Development Plan with an audience that filled the chamber to capacity. “We now have a blueprint to guide and put our province on a higher trajectory of economic growth and development,” he said. Land grabs escalating From page 1 to end a matter that has been dragging on since 1998, said community representative Abraham Mothiba in a telephonic interview conducted through an interpreter. In the meantime Polokwane Municipality is supporting an application by the national Public Works department, the owner of the property, in obtaining an interdict against the land grabbers, as confirmed by Polokwane Municipality Marketing and Communications Manager Tidimalo Chuene. She added the legal processes were underway. Elaborating on the municipality supporting the court application of the Department of Public Works, she said any form of land invasion or land grab had serious implications on the institution having to deliver services in the absence of prior planning of a settlement. Referring to talk of more land daily being targeted along the same strip of road, Chuene said the state property currently being invaded had not yet been earmarked for any development but that government was working on developing the corridor towards Moria. Since Saturday news of the availability of vacant land has culminated in scores of optimistic individuals seemingly willing to brave hours in scorching heat in a bid to secure a sliver of soil for setting up temporary struc-

tures of mostly corrugated iron and wood. They arrived from as far as Thohoyandou and Tzaneen to be considered for registration for a portion of the property identified as farm Kalkfontein some 20 km from Polokwane, it was learnt from random interviews conducted with individuals. The drive continued on Sunday and by Monday they were apparently told to return the next day. At around lunchtime on Monday evasive individuals from Turfloop, Ga-Dikgale and Ga-Mothiba told Polokwane Observer that they were returning home without a hint of good news after arriving the previous morning in the hope of obtaining a piece of their own land. Others indicated preference would have been given to the people of Ga-Mothiba and thereafter the remainder of registered applicants would be accommodated. They could not confirm who the responsible registering agent was. A man awaiting confirmation of a site for construction of an abode said he already arrived on Saturday and was told to take building material for a temporary structure alone. At the time of going to press vehicles were still piling up on both sides of the road, including luxury cars and even a vehicle bearing Department of Provincial Treasury branding. In the meantime a woman at the gate

granting access to the property barred anyone not on a list of registered applicants from entering. According to Mothiba they first lodged an application for the land with the Land Claims Commissioner’s Office in Polokwane in 1998. In the absence of any response, they yet again followed up on their application in 2010 but to date there had been no movement on the matter, he added. Mothiba referred to Monday’s large gathering, which resulted in growing concern on the side of Polokwane residents, as a mere meeting to update the community on their initial application for obtaining the land. He denied that their plight was being supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) whose provincial leader, Michael Mathebe confirmed they were behind the action to take over the particular piece of land. He added that they envisaged having finalised a list of vacant state-owned and private properties identified for invasion by tomorrow (Friday). By Tuesday no record of a case of trespassing could be confirmed by the Polokwane Police, indicated spokesperson Lesiba Ramoshaba. Despite several attempts to obtain comment from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, the spokesperson could not be reached.

Stan’s good news blueprint for developing Limpopo From page 1 Underpinning the Limpopo Development Plan are ten high-level development targets to be attained by 2020. The targets include the achievement of a 3% economic growth rate revised in the light of the present performance of the global economy, increased access to basic water and electricity from the current 83% to 90%, an improved matric pass rate increasing from 2014’s 72% to at least 80% and an increased Geographic Gross Product contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product from 7,15% in 2014 to 9%. In the evening Mathabatha hosted a large party of guests during a customary gala dinner

marking the annual occasion. Upon conclusion of Tuesday evening’s formalities at Protea Hotel Ranch Resort, the Premier granted an interview during which he touched on another pressing issue not addressed in his speech to the Legislature, that of the pending appointment of an MEC for Education. The position was left vacant by the death of Thembi Nwedamutswu in January this year. Ahead of the Legislature opening, perceptions were aired that Mathabatha could make a pronouncement on the late MEC’s successor in the Sopa. During the interview he indicated that they were left with only two months before a total assessment of all Members of the

Executive Council (MECs) could be done to get a proper picture as to whether people have been properly deployed. Therefore it would have been fruitless to appoint a replacement now, the Premier emphasised. He conceded that a possible reshuffle of the provincial cabinet could not be ruled out. As interruptions of Sopas elsewhere in the country have been reported since late last week, the possibility was not ruled out that it could also happen in Limpopo. A Police presence characterised Tuesday’s ceremony. While the session in the legislative chamber proceeded without disturbance, drama however reportedly unfolded at the entrance to the provincial parliamentary premises. The Police apparently dispersed an estimated 400 supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) by allegedly firing rubber bullets and a water cannon during a picket. Eleven of their supporters spent the night in custody after their arrest at around lunchtime and would have applied for bail yesterday (Wednesday) morning, according to EFF Legislature Member Jossey Buthane. At the time of going to press he said the provincial leadership was about to assist the accused to register criminal charges of wrongful arrest, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempted murder against the Police. He told Polokwane Observer they were granted permission to picket at the Legislature entrance in advance, but instead information about the initial gathering place having been unexpectedly changed to the traffic lights in the town centre was relayed to their offices on Monday at around 16:00. He explained that the encounter unfolded when the Police acted against their supporters who were still not aware of the venue change at the time. At the time of going to press Lebowakgomo Police Spokesperson Mamphaswa Seabi said the bail application was still underway. According to him the accused had been arrested for public violence after allegedly blockading the road. He could not confirm whether rubber bullets and a water cannon were used during the incident. • See full details on the Sopa in next week’s edition.

Multiple vehicle crash claims four

RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Traffic officials had to close the Matlala road in the vicinity of Extension 76 on Tuesday evening after an accident involving five vehicles claimed the lives of four people, including a pregnant woman, and left 21 injured. Two bakkies and three taxis were involved. According to Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison Spokesperson Kagiso Mootane it is alleged that the driver of one of the taxis overtook on a solid line. “It is reported that the driver then noticed an oncoming bakkie, swerved back into his lane,

slammed into another taxi and then collided with the oncoming bakkie. Another taxi and bakkie were also involved totalling three taxis and two bakkies,” Mootane said. She said reckless and negligent driving and overtaking unsafely can be possible causes of the accident. Earlier the day a provincial traffic official from Dzanani was involved in an accident on the corner of Marshall and Church streets. The official, travelling in his branded official vehicle collided with a Nissan bakkie who partially burst through the wall of a nearby house. “No one was injured and we are not sure what caused the accident yet,” Mootane said.

Ek, my vrou en kinders was skaars in die winkel toe iemand ons kom roep en sê daar is by my voertuig ingebreek.

earners from Mohlakaneng High School took to the streets of Seshego on Thursday having had enough of poor management of the school resulting in them not receiving proper education. Learners bearing posters listing their grievances, highlighting the issue of a shortage of educators, marched in the vicinity of the school premises. They also did not attend school on Friday. Learners were eager to share their opinions and told Polokwane Observer that there are allegedly only

21 educators for 802 learners. “There is no Mathematics or Tourism educator for Grade 12 learners and some subjects still don’t have textbooks,” they said while some posters also stated that no History teacher was available. A parent who supported the learners’ action said she wanted to call the School Governing Body (SGB) on several occasion relating to certain issues at school, but the school allegedly wouldn’t provide her with a number. Allegations were also made that the school is regularly without water and electricity. Department of Education Spokesperson Paena Galane confirmed that

issues arose at the school last week but assured that since Monday everything was back to normal and learners were in their classes. “The department quickly assessed the school last week when learners were complaining about the shortage of educators. We determined that the school had difficulties managing their time table. Some teachers contributed only 35% of a full school day instead of 85 to 90%,” Galane said. He added that the department assisted the school to compile a proper time table in order for teachers to have a class in front of them every period of the day.

No space for authority abuse in Lim admin YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com

T

here is no space for failure to deliver quality services and the abuse of authority in the current provincial administration. That Premier Stan Mathabatha made abundantly clear in his address to the annual provincial government lekgotla in Polokwane on Friday. In his speech to a gathering of government representatives at Bolivia Lodge for a morning session of assessment of the previous year’s work, Mathabatha referred to them setting the scene for the provincial government’s programme of action. The lekgotla, he said, should be able to produce tangible programmes informed by the many plans adopted the past year. The meeting was the first of the administration without the intervention team, he said. “We wish to applaud the work that was done through that intervention when this provincial administration collapsed in 2011,” he said and added a stable financial base had already been laid and they were ready to take service delivery forward. However, the question they had to ask themselves was whether they were ready for the daunting task of taking the province forward without the intervention team. He then expressed the belief that indeed they were ready to do so. “There is no reason why, with the type of capacity I have seen here before us, that we cannot be ready.” Mathabatha went on to address the issue of quality service delivery, saying if they couldn’t afford to provide basic services to their people they didn’t afford to be there.” Once you provide that, everything else would fall into place. I therefore wish to challenge all of us to remember we are only in the positions where we are because we are called to provide effective and efficient service delivery to our people.” Before

even becoming representatives of a party they were representatives of the people of Limpopo, irrespective of their political affiliation, which should be the determining factor, he emphasised. Mathabatha further stressed those in administrative positions should know their positions of authority may never be abused. He appealed to those who feel they are unable to work must give way to those that can work. Those that don’t have capacity to deliver must give way to those who have capacity to do so and those who need capacity to deliver but do not have it currently must build their capacity. “There is no time for us to be waiting while our people are not receiving quality services. They deserve it. And it is not a favour, neither a privilege that they get quality services.” Such meetings should take a new dimension to enable them to come up with concrete and reasonable objectives that talk to the dreams and aspirations of the people, he said. The Premier quoted from a letter of the Prime Minister of the then Republic of Congo, the late Patrice Lumumba who wrote from prison “Without dignity there is no freedom, without justice there is no dignity and without independence there are no free men. The day will come when history will speak but it would not be the history which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations. It will be history which will be taught in the countries which have won freedom from colonialism and its puppets. Africa will write its own history and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity.” Mathabatha concluded saying it was the history their children should inherit and as they presented the interpretation of the State of the Province address this week, that history should represent the aspirations and desires of the people of the province.

acob Lebogo, businessperson and former Polokwane municipal councillor appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and discharge of a firearm in a public space. The case was postponed to 27 March. Lebogo faces these charges after an incident at Waterland, Penina Park in September when African National Con-

gress (ANC) Milo Malatjie Branch Chairperson, Boy Mamabolo was allegedly shot and three other persons injured. Mamabolo spent several weeks in the intensive care unit of Mediclinic Limpopo and had to undergo surgery. Lebogo appeared in court two days after the alleged shooting when the case was postponed for another two days and he had to remain in custody. During his formal bail application state prosecutor Jackson Mabasa proposed that bail be set at R10 000 to

which Lebogo’s attorney, Tumi Mokwena replied that the accused earns only R30 000 profit from a local business he owns and can afford R5 000 only. Magistrate Anne van der Merwe then granted bail of R5 000 on condition that Lebogo hands his passport to the investigating officer; does not interfere with or threaten state witnesses; does not commit any other offence and informs the investigating officer should he leave Polokwane at any stage and for any reason.

Godfrey Ntsieni who is suspected of murder, attempted murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping and assault will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court again on 4 March. Ntsieni, a student at the University of Venda at the time of his arrest late in July, has been in custody since. His apprehension followed the discovery of the body of Brenda Ndove in the vicinity of the university’s administration block on 18 July. She is suspected to have been stabbed to death and personal items belonging to her had been stolen. Her cell phone was later found in the suspect’s possession. Ntsieni was also reportedly found in possession of the identification card and cell phone of Sandy Thagisa who was assaulted and robbed in May and a hairpin belonging to a murdered woman whose body was found on the university premises in March. The bodies of two minor girls were also found near the university. They are believed to have been kidnapped from school. It is reported that a nineyear-old girl’s body was found at Golgotha Village in April while an eight-year-old girl’s body was found close to the university campus in June. Both were allegedly raped before being strangled to death.

horough investigation by Polokwane Police resulted in the arrest of two persons in separate incidents on Friday who now face charges of fraud at government departments. In the first incident Miriam Machuene was apprehended by officials from the Department of Home Affairs after it was discovered that she allegedly claimed grants from South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) for three children who do not exist. “It cannot yet be revealed for how long she has been claiming the grants or how much money is involved as it forms part of the investigation,” Head of Corporate Communication at the Polokwane

Police Ntobeng Phala said. Machuene appeared in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday. She was refused bail and will appear again tomorrow (Friday). In the second incident Police arrested Jerry Mamabolo after he allegedly sold a RDP house which is not registered in his name to another person for R55 000. “The victim went into a deal with Mamabolo to purchase the house. When Police received the information about the deal it was immediately followed-up and the arrest made. By that time R16 500 was already paid to Mamabolo for the purchase of the house,” Phala said. Mamabolo also appeared in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed until tomorrow (Friday) while he remains in custody.

Traditional leaders can finally have medical aid HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Traditional leaders in the province are to be given free access to medical services Premier Stan Mathabatha announced during his State of the Province Address (Sopa) on Tuesday. Mathabatha also announced that, as a measure of supporting the institution of traditional leadership, the provincial Government will purchase vehicles for traditional leaders over the next medium term period. “Eighty percent of our population is under traditional leadership. This institution plays a major role in the preservation of our culture, tradition as well as the development of our country. The MECs of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, and Provincial Treasury in consultation with the House of Traditional Leaders will work out a mechanism in terms of which

these vehicles will be allocated to leaders over this period,” Mathabatha said. Chairperson of the House, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale welcomed the two major announcements by the Premier and said they will improve the lives and working conditions of the traditional leaders in the province. “We have lost so many traditional leaders due to various illnesses. Some were not given the best medical attention and some could not afford the hospital bills. The medical aid will come in handy and the vehicles will enable them to travel to meetings without any hindrance”. Democratic Alliance (DA) Provincial Leader, Jacques Smalle is quoted to have said the Sopa was more of an election campaign than an actual report on the real state of Limpopo. “We are troubled by the buying of traditional leaders’ votes through promises of medical aid and new vehicles.”

Offenders to assist Dept of Education HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za

T

he departments of Education and of Correctional Services in collaboration with the Limpopo Education Development Trust last Thursday signed a service level agreement which will see inmates, offenders and parolees from all correctional services facilities in the province providing expertise in maintenance and refurbishment of furniture and infrastructure in all provincial schools that need assistance. Acting MEC for Education, Jerry Ndou said the signing of the agreement is the legacy of late MEC for Education Thembi Nwedamutswu as she was the one who introduced the matter within the provincial executive council. “We had discussions on how we are going to ensure that the programme works and we are glad that the programme is now a reality,” Ndou said. He added that he believed that, through the agreement, offenders will assist in ensuring that there is a great environment for learners at schools and educators work in situations that will enable them to be more productive. Takalani Mashamba, Area Commissioner for Thohoyandou Correctional Services said the involvement of offenders in community services is part of the offender rehabilitation path which prepares the offenders for social integration. We used to release offenders and parolees to amongst others clean school yards and building classrooms and recently the offenders built three classrooms at Lwamondo in Vhembe District. With their involvement in community work they are saying that they are sorry and people should accept them in the society,” Mashamba says.

Theresa Moila from Limpopo Education Development Trust said the partnership will go a long way in improving the quality of education and at the same time it will give offenders and parolees a welcome opportunity to put to good use the skills imparted to them by the department of Correctional Services. “I am certain that through this collaboration the lives of the offenders and parolees will never be the same again. Their skills and competencies will be strengthened and their future looks certain as they will have skills to offer to the job market and impact on the South African economy, at the same time offering them an opportunity to become self reliant,” Moila said.

Members of the Westenburg community should form cooperatives and establish small, micro and medium enterprises in answer to the high rate of unemployment in the area. During a recent meeting held at a venue in the suburb aimed to enlighten and encourage the community to use their ideas, skills and initiative to the economic advantage of the community. Snowy Kennedy-Monyemoratho, MPL and a resident of Westenburg organised the event. She said: “We brought the relevant stakeholders such as the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and officials from the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism to enlighten the community and share knowledge with them on how to start cooperatives and small business. We did this because lots of community members have business plans and ideas but they dont know how to execute and implement these ideas”. By creating the programme, Seda’s ability to satisfy the needs of ordinary people is enhanced,” Kgopa said. He urged communities to form cooperatives in Cleaning, Agriculture, Agri processing and Printing. “It is a call of Government for community members to form cooperatives. Financial assistance is available from the Department of Trade Industry. We want them to exploit the given opportunities so that they can empower themselves and help in eradicating poverty,” Kgopa said. One of the community members, Suzan Phala said after the session that it was time for the community to stand up and make use of the available opportunities in both government and private sector. “It was a fruitful and informative session. Most of us were not aware that there is funding and support for cooperatives and I think that aspect will actually prompt us to start those co-operatives and create employment,” Phala said.

G

ood news for motorists in Limpopo and Polokwane is that Sasol Turbodiesel ULS 10 ppm is now available at Sasol filling stations. Sasol’s website has provided the following frequently asked questions and answers to enable motorists be informed about the new product: Q: What is Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm? A: It is a new grade of diesel exclusively available from Sasol, which contains 10 parts per million of sulphur or less. The standard diesel grade available in South Africa is 500ppm with 50ppm being a second grade. Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm complies with Clean Fuels 2 specifications for sulphur. Q: Does Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm meet all the proposed CF 2 requirements? A: Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm will comply with the maximum allowable sulphur content of 10ppm and will meet and exceed the cetane requirement. Q: Can I use Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm for all my equipment - old and new? A: Yes. Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10 ppm is fully compliant. It can therefore be used in older (including naturally aspirated or nonturbocharged) and new vehicles as well as all diesel powered plant equipment, including stationary machines and generators. Q: What benefits will I get from switching my older equipment to Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10? 1. The ultra-low sulphur levels of Sasol

turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm result in a significant reduction in vehicle exhaust smoke. 2. The superior keep-clean and clean-up performance of Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm will keep the fuel system, especially the diesel injectors deposit free, ensuring optimum engine efficiency and operation. 3. A cleaner fuel system in turn serves to ensure optimum engine efficiency and troublefree operation, the results of which are improved fuel consumption as well as improved acceleration performance. 4. Sasol Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm has improved anti-foam performance, minimizing foam volume as well as collapsing any foam that might form very quickly. This results in quicker diesel dispensing as well as eliminating diesel spillages from the fuel filler hole. 5. The diesel cetane value of Sasol turbo diesel™ ULS 10 is higher than what the national diesel specification requires. A higher cetane makes engine operation smoother and cold starting easier. Q: How do I know that the diesel I am buying is Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm? A: Sasol turbodiesel ULS 10ppm is exclusively available from Sasol Penina Park, Sasol Bendor, Sasol Madiba Park and Gateway and Sasol Dendron Road and is purple in colour. Q: If I fill my vehicle with a 50ppm or 500ppm diesel can I just switch over to Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm? A: Yes. Fuels of different sulphur content can be mixed and adding Sasol turbodiesel™ ULS 10ppm mixes to an existing product will probably improve the quality of the resultant mixture. It must be noted though that the resultant mixture might result in a sulphur content higher than 10ppm.

Kansa se eerste Wall of Love

Kaartjies kon vir R10 by Theunis Fichardt

Met Mall of the North se bruidskou het deelnemers R100 000 ingesamel.

Master Maths Polokwane was recently named Franchisee of the Year 2014 during a gala evening held in Gauteng. The Polokwane team left no doubt as to who the overall winner should be when they were announced the Winner of Category A for 2014 and Overall Winner of the Year 2014 for Mathematics as well received a Recognition of Excellence award for Master Science 2014. Claudia Wartington, Owner of Master Maths Polokwane described winning the awards as a great honour. “Considering that it means that the centre is the top Master Maths centre across the country for 2014, competing with centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town is a real compliment for the province and Polokwane,” said Wartington. Master Maths Polokwane, started in 2004, has exponentially grown and merged with Master Science in 2012. Wartington attributes much of their achievement to her staff and stated that Centre Manager Pascar Sithole has contributed vastly to its success. She also mentioned the specific contributions of staff members Klaas Shiburi, Karina de Necker, Delsy Shai and Peet von Moltke in the continued growth and progress of the centre. With Mathematics and Physical Science a big challenge in the educational sector and many learners struggling to cope with these subjects, extra lessons have become the norm and this is where Master Maths Polokwane plays a crucial role as it weekly accommodates about 200 learners for extra classes. Master Maths has been around since 1976 and were among the first to use audio-visual teaching methods in providing individualised extra maths tuition to school children. Master

More than 30 years later, the company is still setting the pace with its unique M2 Computer Based Training System for the teaching of Mathematics and Physical Science in both Afrikaans and English. This system which is at the heart of every Master Maths centre uses voice, animated images and learner interaction to deliver teaching content to learners. Master Maths centres providing individual extra maths tuition to more than 12 000 school learners. The Master Maths system is also used in excess of 250 high schools to support and enhance curriculum delivery.

Weaker municipalities can learn from the best practises of those who performed better.” David Magabe, Chairperson of The South African Local Government Association (Salga) said he looks forward to the association’s Finance Week that is hosted at Karibu Leisure Resort near Tzaneen today (Thursday) and Friday with the theme “Consolidating of the 2013/14 Audit

outcomes and returning back to the basics”. “Salga is committed to empower financial Exco-members in particular, to play their oversight role in a professional and effective manner. A new audit approach will be introduced during the 2016/17 financial year and we have to be prepared to be compliant. Stricter internal control measures and systems of accountability should be introduced and Audit Committee and Municipal Performance Audit Committee Members should be empowered,” Magabe said. Magabe reckons that most of the negative findings in audit reports could have been avoided if adequate explanations were given to the Auditor-General within the required time frames. To ensure that this is not repeated, officials and councillors required to assist with the responses to audit queries, will not be allowed to take leave during the audit process. “Senior politicians will also attend Audit Steering Committee meetings to ensure that they play their oversight role,” Magabe concluded.

DebtSafe opens in city RC Myburgh >>rc.observer@gmail.com DebtSafe, recently voted and crowned South Africa’s favourite debt review agency by the public is now open in Polokwane with its offices situated at 118 Marshall Street. The agency aims to bring its services closer to its clients after several enquiries were received from the area and the opportunity arose to establish a place where local residents can meet with debt consultants in person to address their needs. Polokwane is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and with this prosperity and growth there is often more debt which,

for anyone, can quickly spiral out of control. People often are not informed about what help is available to them when this happens. Through the establishment of the new office in Polokwane, DebtSafe will not only educate new clients on how to get out of their financial distress, but also put them in touch with correct support structures such as counsellors and consultants. By having an office in Polokwane means that DebtSafe can guarantee access to their services and also be there at the exact time that a helping hand is needed. In doing so, DebtSafe aims to help over-indebted residents of the area by reducing the burden of their monthly payments and protecting

them from possible legal action. They also assist clients in making better decisions when it comes to debt focussing on the financial rehabilitation of clients. DebtSafe is going the extra mile to easily get in contact with clients. Their offices are easily accessible in Marshall Street and they are also willing to do home or office visits if needed and ready to assist clients telephonically. In addition to this they are also available on Sundays and most public holidays. For more information contact Branch Manager Maggie Moila on 079 160 8664 or the office on 015 291 1257. he Rotary Club of Haenertsburg recently hosted the second Rotary Ramble in the village of Haenertsburg, and mountains of Magoebaskloof. Maria da Silva, President elect of the Rotary Club of Haenertsburg, says in a media release that the aim of this project is to raise club funds and at the same time create Rotary awareness amongst the participants. “It takes people to areas they never even knew existed despite driving past them on a regular basis. 22 teams of mostly four people each took part in the Water, Wood and Wow places Ramble. The clues took them from the cemetery in Haenertsburg, where they had to count plaques on the wall of remembrance, to Stanford Lake College where they had to chip a golf ball closest to the marker. Other tasks included ‘fishing’ blindfolded for their magnetic team fish at Bramasole, tasting a delicious Brazilian cocktail called Caipirinha at the Orion Magoebaskloof Hotel, and writing down the ingredients. There were various driving tasks which had teams counting the numbers of left bends up or down the pass, looking out for the names on the bridge that crosses over the Tzaneen dam, looking for which farm is located at GV31 which is on the George’s Valley Road,” says Da Silva. The history of the area was also included, and once again had participants looking for the Anglo Boer Monument on the GV21 turnoff also described as the Long Tom Monument. Another task a lot of the contestants enjoyed, was measuring the girth of three marked trees in the Commonwealth Plantation just next

to Sapekoe. This 10,7 ha plantation contains three varieties of Eucalyptus trees planted as an experimental plot in 1914. “The teams had names of cars and motorbikes and the winning team was Alfa Romeo, with Mark and Carla Greenland, and Tercia and Philip Jansen van Vuuren, winning the much coveted Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour Vouchers. Second place had Team Ferrari racing for the finish with the quickest time, but their points lost them first place. These were Maurice Stander, Carmen Bradfield, Annaleen and Gert Grobler. They received two vouchers for a weekend for two at the Orion Magoebaskloof Hotel with Dinner Bed and Breakfast. Third place was Team Honda with Gloria and Brian Mockford, and Diane and Frank Haas who received vouchers from Makro. Since we encouraged our teams to enjoy the route and the sceneries and tasks, we awarded a prize for the team that took the longest to complete the course. This team coincidentally had our club President Jack Holloway, and our District 9400 Govenor Annie Steijn and her husband Hennie. Team Rolls Royce, Koos and Riekie Smit of Smit Garrun, Tzaneen, and their daughter Nadine and her fiancé Gericke du Plessis took the spirit prize which was a set of lanterns to hold candles for our load shedding,“ added Da Silva.

Du Toit kan by 072 399 6842 bereik word.

More than 300 reasons to own a Chrysler SRT8 RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

I

f you like cars capable of taking performance to the limit and beyond, Mercurius Motors will give you no reason not to want to own the Chrysler 300 SRT8, the beast among the 300 C range. On the showroom floor the masterpiece expresses a revolution of design. The subtle

sophistication of 20-inch black alloy wheels is the definition of understated street presence. The performance-tuned suspension makes the ride as smooth as the look. The jewelled, C-shaped LEDs give a distinctive, strong look, previously only seen in European luxury cars. The black-accented headlamp bezels also provide a confident look at the road ahead. The headlamps are also part of the manufacturer’s Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) system which automatically turns the headlamps in the steering direction, giving the driver improved night time driving visibility. It also computes the speed and steering angle to deliver the best

headlamp projection. The interior of the Chrysler 300 SRT8 celebrates exceptional luxury with performance technology. The instrument panel has an 21,3-cm colour touchscreen display, designed with customizable background selections. Contoured, race-inspired seats are heated and ventilated for your comfort and modified door trims feature unique bolster material with accent stitching. To provide even more of a high-performance look, Chrysler integrated real carbon fibre interior trim pieces within the instrument panel, door spears and shifter bezel. The SRT8 is a powerhouse that lives up to the legend. Power, efficiency and control all add up in the Chrysler 300 SRT8. The 6,4 litre HEMI SRT V8 petrol engine is teamed with the five-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The powertrain delivers 447 kW and 631 Nm at 4 150 rpm — providing awe-inspiring standing starts and improved straight-line performance while performance-tuned motor mounts improve idle stability and ride control. HEMI SRT V8 fuel saver technology detects when full power isn’t necessary and seamlessly shuts off four of the eight cylinders, optimizing fuel efficiency. It reaches the 100 km/h mark from standstill just under five seconds. The Chrysler is equipped with state of the

art technology to ensure a safe drive. The available Adaptive Cruise Control uses a radar sensor mounted at the front of the vehicle to detect objects in its path. If the lane ahead is clear, the cruise control speed set is maintained, but when slower traffic is detected the system automatically adjusts the speed to allow a safe following. In addition, the Forward Collision Warning system alerts the driver by sounding a chime and displaying a visual message in the instrument panel if he is approaching an object too fast. Blind Spot Monitoring technology uses radar sensors to assist when changing lanes or if being passed by an unseen vehicle. The system lets you know if a vehicle is in your blind spot via illuminated icons on the corresponding side view mirror and with a programmable audible warning. It is clear that Chrysler only implemented the best during the designing process. To make the drive more comfortable Chrysler also added the Uconnect System which allows you to access your cell phone, sound system, MP3 player, heating and cooling controls and many more. Sapoa: Organisation of choice >> Sapoa aims to strengthen its position in Polokwane

W

ith the South African Property Owners Association’s (Sapoa) strong mission statement and goals in mind, the Polokwane region aims to grow and strengthen in the Limpopo area. And with Zendi Linde on board as the new Regional Secretariat, the region is driven to make a difference as recently proven when Sapoa lobbied against pertinent local issues in the industry. It was brought to the organisation’s attention by members that the Polokwane general valuation roll was published without an approved rates policy which is in direct contravention of the Municipal Property Rates Amendment Act. Sapoa held several deliberations with the City of Polokwane regarding the general valuation roll, rates policy and the issues that affect members that emanate from same. The meetings were fruitful and resulted in Sapoa’s concerns being addressed. Significant changes were made which include the inclusion of the illegal land use category and rebates received for property owners of business of industrial properties with a market value in excess of R50 000 000. Established in 1966, the South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) boasts an exceptional history with a strong focus on all the provinces in South Africa. Sapoa is a unique member driven organisation that aims to represent, protect and advance its members’ commercial and industrial property interests within the property industry in terms of ownership, management and development. Currently its members control about 90% of all commercial and combined portfolios in excess of R150 billion. Sapoa is held in very high esteem by the relevant sectors of government and are therefore consulted on all matters pertaining to the property industry. Sapoa also enjoys representation on key South African bodies, which are key to the country’s property development. Its objectives are based on the principles of the free enterprise system, as the only workable economic system and the inalienability of property ownership, not only for its members but also for the future of South Africa, and its competitiveness in the world arena. SAPOA encourages participation to promote the expansion of South Africa’s commercial and industrial property sectors. The organisation further encourages its members to share their expertise through active participation in the association. A forum is available, which allows members and non-members to respond to change, decisions and legislation. With regards to government legislative structures, Sapoa has fostered key relationships and maintains a non-political bias. The organisation has held several dinners with South Africa’s mayors through its Meet the Mayor Campaign which has garnered much success since its inception. By setting quality standards and creating educational programmes, Sapoa is also able to be a source of information useful not only to its members but also to government at various levels and the industry as a whole, through a significant involvement in the collection and dissemination of property data and statistics. Sapoa is not inclusive; it encourages these community members to become involved as owners, developers, employees and managers in the property industry. By encouraging a wider participation in the industry and a greater involvement in the affairs of the association, Sapoa also ultimately aspires to expand its contacts within all levels of government to ensure continued good relations and recognition as the authoritative voice of the commercial and industrial property industry. To stay ahead of property trends and current affairs, Sapoa relies on, and is supported

by, a network of prestigious affiliates. These include Women’s Property Network (WPN), Shopping Centre Council of South Africa (SCCSA), Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners (SAIBPP), South African Institute of Valuers (Saiv), The Property Charter and the African Real Estate Society (Afres).

Through these relationships and the backing of a number of research and analysis listed property groups, residential property groups, urban regeneration associations and local online resources, Sapoa has a wealth of information at its fingertips, which it is able to share, to inform and to enlighten its members. Sapoa also offers an extensive training

schedule made available to all members. All courses are held in partnership with universities nationally allowing members to keep their expertise and certifications relevant and up to date. For further information contact Linde on 072 282 0580 or alternatively send an email to sapoa.limpopo@sapoa.org.za.

The Department of Labour has urged employers across all spectrums to comply with all labour legislation in order to curb among others death, disease and unnecessary prosecution at work places. The appeal follows the recent deaths of two employees who were killed when a 1,85 m long bunker-wall fell on them at a farm in the Ofcolaco area. Departmental Spokesperson Johannes Mokou said one of two 1,85 m high parallel walls which was part of a 34 m long roofless bunker collapsed killing the workers. Mokou explained that the bunker was used to store animal feed. “We established that the bunker wall, which was 30 cm thick, had no cracks at the time of its collapse which meant it gave in each time the tractor got into the bunker-wall to offload the animal feed,” he said. The investiagation found that the farm had not supplied the contractor of the bunker wall with a health safety specification, which would have guided the contractor on the purpose of the wall. The contractor would have considered the weight of the tractor and animal feed when the bunker-wall was in operation and would have constructed the wall accordingly,” Mokou explained. He also indicated that the incident could have been avoided if there was compliance from the employer. “This state of affairs is worrisome and needs all stakeholders to come together to eradicate these anomalies. We want the involvement of management, trade unions, workers and everyone so that we can act proactively to prevent incidents that may have negative effects on health and the safety of employees due to lack of knowledge or due to the ignorance by the employers, though ignorance of the law is never an excuse. We are going to embark on a provincial compliance roadshow to capacitate employers with more knowledge relating to compliance,” Mokou said.

Enjoy the peaceful lifestyle in this well kept 2 bedr, 2 bathr spacious townhouse. 1 Garage.

Starfish Moshele, with Brian Tigere, social worker from the APD Limpopo that donated a wheelchair to Moshele.

Bed: 5 Bath: 4 Garage: 1 Five bedroom home with upmarket finishes. Fully fenced yard and a braai area. Not to mention that beautiful, beautiful kitchen. This house is everything you want and more, waiting for you to move in. You don’t have to lift a finger.

APD Limpopo donates wheelchair LEANDRI VAN SCHALKWYK >>leandri.observer@gmail.com Things are looking up again for 44-year-old Starfish Moshole from Sekhopo Village near Tzaneen after receiving a wheelchair from the Association for Persons with Disability (APD). Moshole became disabled at the age of 28 during circumstances shrouded in controversy since he went to hospital an able bodied man only to be discharged disabled and wheelchair bound. Since 1996 Moshole experienced severe pain in his legs, a situation that worsened with time to the extent that he sought help at Mankweng Hospital where he was given pain killers. As his condition exacerbated he was referred to the Dr George Mukhari Hospital (then still known as the Ga-Rankuwa Hospital) in Gauteng. Upon his admission he had difficulty walking but did not require the services of a wheelchair or a walking frame. The doctors later found out that he had suffered trauma on his neck that required surgery. Despite promises that he would recover the operation left him disabled. His greatest challenge was been mobility since he did not have a wheelchair. He later got one from a well-wisher but it was damaged because of the rough terrain at his rural village. To get a replacement wheelchair has not been easy for Moshole since the hospitals responsible to provide him with it had no stock. However when ASPD Limpopo was made aware of his plight they stepped in and thanks to them Moshile has regained some of his mobility. He thanked the association for their assistance and said he was grateful to be more mobile again.

lack Leopards Zeca Marques, Black Football Club beat Leopards coach. FC Cape Town 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup at Thohoyandou stadium on Saturday. Leopards’s goals were scored by Leonard Nthsangase, Harry Nyirenda and the inform Roggert Nyundu in the first and second halves of the match. Club Spokesperson, Berry Ramunenyiwa believes with the current crop of players assembled by the new coach Zeca Marques the team can go as far as reaching the final of the competition. “We reached the final in 2011 and I think we can do it again. We have a visionary Chairman, David Thidiela who is working tirelessly to ensure that the team does well. He brought in Zeca Marques on board and he has been doing well since he took over. The team has managed to score 12 goals in just three games under his tutelage and that is a huge achievement,” Rumunenyiwa said. Leopards are currently on the ninth position in the National First Division and Ramunenyiwa is adamant that the team can still win the league. “ We have 12 matches left in the league and that is a possible 36 points, so anything is possible,” a confident Ramunenyiwa said.

arly on Saturday nearly 1 500 athletes gathered at the B rugby fields behind the old Peter Mokaba Stadium for the start of the seventh BMW Modern Autohaus 4-in-1 Road Race. The highlight of the race, the 42,2 km marathon, was won in spectacular style by local athletes Phuti Mohale, who competed in the open class and Jane Mudau. Mudau won both the women’s open and master categories with Melanie Melville second in the open category and the first veteran woman to finish. The winner of the 21 km race in the women open category, Hilda Molokomme also took first place in the junior category. Makwaeba

Seipati, winner of the 10 km women open category also came first as junior runner with Elizna Kotze as third place winner in the open category also taking the number one position in the veteran category. Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) Chairperson Corrie Calitz said the race was once again a huge success. “The race annually attracts a lot of athletes in all age categories. We were not surprised that almost 1 500 athletes pitched this year,” he said. The race offered a 5 km fun run, 10 km race, 21 km half marathon and 42 km marathon. Calitz thanked the traffic department and ambulance services for a job well done to keep athletes safe on the road. “The race would also not have been possible if we haven’t had enthusiastic people and supporters at the water points. It was a very warm day and water points kept our athletes

hydrated and motivated to complete the race,” Calitz said. The race is also a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans qualifier. Well known athletes use the BMW Modern Autohaus 4-in-1 Road Race as preparation for these two events. Modern Autohaus sponsored the event with more than R18 000 in prize money. The management extended their gratitude towards every person and especially the PAC for assuring the success of the race.

Winner of the open and masters category of the 42,2 km marathon, Jane Mudau.

Jane Mudau (53) humble, talented athlete

>> “I have a job and am surrounded by people who care” >> Won the women’s master class at the 2014 Comrades Marathon

RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

T

his year’s BMW Modern Autohaus 4-in-1 Road Race belonged to Jane Mudau from start to finish. To those familiar with her exceptional talent it came as no surprise when on Saturday she lead the women’s race over 42, 2 km from start to finish to claim victory in both the open category and masters class. Mudau, 53, is an ordinary person but with a special talent when it comes to running. Her childhood in the rural area of Thohoyandou was dominated by abject poverty yet she knew from a young age that she had a talent and love for running. “I started running professionally in 1999 as member of the Thohoyandou Athletics Club. Five years later I joined the Nedbank team after which I joined the Polokwane Road Runners this year,” she said. Winning two categories in Saturday’s race is not new to her and she recalls several marathons countrywide and even cross border where she has claimed titles. “This year will be my 11th Comrades Marathon and tenth Two Oceans. In 2006 I finished eighth overall and last year 11th overall in the Two

Oceans. This year I am aiming again for top ten,” a confident Mudau said. In 2014 she was the third woman home and won the master class of the Comrades Marathon. Her passion for running gave her the strength to leave behind her mother and three children in Thohoyandou and move to Polokwane. “I was granted the opportunity to come and work in Polokwane and be part of the Polokwane Road Runners which I could not decline. Now I have a job and am surrounded by people who care. I still see my family often and they understand why I made the decision to come to Polokwane,” she said and added that the main reason for her running is to keep healthy and purely because she enjoys every moment thereof. Prior to and after her daily chores as domestic worker she practises at least two hours per day. “Before work I run for an hour and a half at a quick pace followed by a slower relaxed pace in the afternoon for about 30 minutes. The next race to compete in will be this weekend at the Marula Festival in Phalaborwa,” she said. Other athletes speak only with respect of the humble Mudau. “What you see is what you get. I have never met such a talented yet humble woman. Despite her

own shortcomings she will always look out for the next person. Not only is she an outstandingly good athlete, but also a loveable person with no pretentions,” Erika Bantjes, Mudau’s employer and fellow athlete said. Bantjes created a position for Mudau at her home in order to help her become part of athletics in Polokwane. “I also competed in the 42,2 km on Saturday and after she had finished she came back all the way to run with and support me. She is such a pleasant person to have on the team. She will literally walk or even run the extra mile for the people around her,” Bantjes said, confirming that Mudau is such a good motivator that she even inspired her other domestic worker who now walks at least 2 km per day. Mudau is described as a woman who doesn’t have much but will still give away the last bit she owns. “She eagerly wanted to give me her prize money after Saturday’s race. I was shocked. Day by day she just blows my mind away with her humility and good heartedness,” Bantjes said.
