A must for Limpopo’s mountain bikers

Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Take in the magnificent scenery of the Haenertsburg area at the Magoebaskloof Mountain Bike Classic on 2 November that starts and finishes at Stanford Lake College. Limpopo boasts some of the most spec-

tacular scenery and potential mountain bike trails in the country and the Magoebaskloof Mountain Bike Classic brings out the best that the province has to offer since it was first hosted in 1999. Growth has been nothing but substantial, from 162 riders in 1999 to almost 1 000 in 2003. Entries in subsequent years have averaged around 750 riders. In 2008, a new route was established which moved away from the tea estates and into the Woodbush Forest Reserve. The organisers of

the race have gone out of their way to provide a route that is challenging, comprising of difficult climbs, steep descents, spectacular views and awesome forest scenery. Plantations of pine and saligna, indigenous closed canopy forests, crystal clear mountain streams and the scenic Dap Naudé Dam are some of the delights to be found along the trail. A children’s 10 km fun ride and 10 km fun run have been added to the programme for 2013. The 10 km fun run was designed with

undreds of rally enthusiasts are expected to flock to Polokwane this weekend when the third annual Polokwane Motor Rally is hosted on Friday and Saturday, giving residents the opportunity to experience firsthand adrenaline rushing motorsport. Polokwane Executive Mayor Freddy Greaver launched the Polokwane Motor Rally and the Mayor’s Golf Charity Cup, to be hosted on 25 October, during an event at the Pietersburg Golf Club on Tuesday. Joining him at the launch was President of the National Rally Commission of Motorsport South Africa (MSA), Mr Richard Leeke. Leeke in his presentation said the rally brings more than 700 people to the city and that MSA recorded approximately 2 000 local spectators attending the event. “By hosting this event we bring money to Polokwane and we are proud to support the mayor and the residents in such a manner,” he said. He added that 36 vehicles entered the rally which forms the seventh round of the national championship. “Spectators can expect a fierce competition as the top racers’ scores on the log are very close,” he suggested. Greaver responded by saying that Polokwane Municipality strives towards providing

residents with efficient services such as water, electricity and sanitation but by bringing such events to the city is to provide a better life for residents as well. By the time of the launch Greaver told guests that he was exactly three years, one month and one week in the position as mayor, and that he and his council distributed more than R3,5 million to the less privileged from funds raised at the Mayor’s Golf Charity Cup. The municipality also distributed R920 000 for bursaries raised from rugby matches held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. “It will also be the third year for this cup and not many municipalities could compare with what we have achieved within three years to contribute to the lives of people. Rugby and golf are the reason why the people of Polokwane still have hope,” he said. He praised business personalities in Polokwane for their continuous support to help the municipality achieving their goals. Speed freaks can visit the new Peter Mokaba Stadium from 07:00 tomorrow (Friday) when drivers will complete the registration followed by a parade to the mayor’s offices on the corner of Bodenstein and Kerk streets at 11:00. From there the first car will leave at 12:00 to the starting point of the first match south of the city. Spectators can visit the stadium to determine the exact spectator view points.

Rampant Easterns tame Impalas and Lilies Warren Blunt >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com The visiting Easterns team scored a double over Limpopo in their three-day fixture against the Impalas at the Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) Audi Polokwane Oval and Twenty20 match against the Limpopo Lilies u.19 team at the Polokwane Cricket Club on Sunday. At PHS last Wednesday, the Impalas won the toss and opted to bat first, scoring a meagre 69 all out to put themselves under pressure from day one. Easterns replied with 267 to lead by 198 runs shortly before the end of the second day. The Impalas were bowled out for only 85 runs shortly before lunch on the third day to lose by an innings and 113 runs. On Saturday the provincial Lilies u.19 team faced the Easterns senior women team as

part of their preparation for the u.19 girl’s tournament that will be held in Cape Town in December. After the Lilies won the toss and put Easterns in to bat first, the visitors scored a commanding 170/4 in their allotted 20 overs. The Lilies could only manage 80 runs for the loss of six wickets in reply to give Easterns victory by 90 runs. Jessica Mayes was the top scorer for the Lilies with 32 runs off 67 balls. Lilies u.19 coach, Sedibu Mohlaba commented that he was proud of the team’s performance against their more senior opponents despite the defeat. He added that they will take a lot of positives from the game in order to be ready for the tournament at the end of the year. The Limpopo Impalas travel to Kroonstad on Saturday to take on Free State in a 50-over match, hoping to turn around their fortunes after the heavy defeat by Easterns last week.
