Local brass band shares their heart’s song KESHIA J V RENSBURG >> keshia.observer@gmail.com German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche many years ago said that a life without music would be a complete mistake - a statement that is proudly echoed by the Limpopo Wind Band Association (Liwinba). The band has since the beginning of 2013 been offering music theory lessons to 26 children at the Place of Safety. Spokesperson for Liwinba, Mr Duke Mashamaite, says the culmination of their project took place in November when the band donated musical instruments to the children for them to begin with their practical musicianship. “The children were very excited and could not wait to get started with the practical lesson.” Linwinba firmly holds that making and
learning music is a creative art form that can change the perspectives and attitudes of children towards life in general. Mashamaite says that creative faculties, when well stimulated, are as critical to learning as literacy is and that is why Liwinba felt the need to participate in the education of children living at the Place of Safety. A bonus point associated with the music training received by the children is that the musical education and training will entitle the children upon completion of the course to be eligible to join any one of the South African Police bands or the South African Defence Force bands, for which there are currently no breeding structures. The children may also opt to practice music as individuals or even pursue an academic career in music.
CITIZEN JOURNALIST STORY www.observer.co.za
A gusty new year for Attorneys Frans Geldenhuys The 200 and more attorneys of Polokwane will see the long tradition of self-regulation of the legal fraternity come to an end this year. Justice Minister Jeff Radebe has said so according to the desk of the new President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces (LSNP), Dr Llewelyn Curlewis, in the December Society News. The Minister has said that the new Legal Practice Bill passed in Parliament on 12 November 2013 will place South Africa on the threshold of a complete renewal of the legal system. Self-regulation by lawyers will become regulation of all legal practitioners by the Minister aided by national and provincial councils of appointees. The desk report does not say if the Minister had said how a mere change in the running of legal practitioners is going to introduce the renewal of the legal system and what the renewal will look like. It does say that the Bill will likely be referred to the
National Council of Provinces which will likely hold public hearings in February. Thereafter it should be clearer, says the desk report, what will happen to the attorneys’ profession in general and the existing law societies. Dr Curlewis writes that the societies and the societies of advocates are grappling with the Bill to find common ground and limit issues on the divergent views they hold and how to address it at the public hearings. Other important business that the Association dealt with at the meeting was the disarray of the courts in the city and a seemingly never-ending disciplinary process which has been dealt with confidentially thus far. The most contentious issues for attorneys are the loss of the limited independence they had to the minister and his appointees; their disciplining which will be done by these appointees and in public; the way of determination of their fees and that advocates will be entitled to take instructions directly from the public.
