New academic year gets underway for most learners WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com

T

he 2015 academic year commenced yesterday (Wednesday) for learners and educators in Limpopo and reports of classes being boycotted and a shortage of learner support material and textbooks at some schools have slowly started to filter through. Academic and support activities commenced with the usual hectic pace to get everybody registered, issue the necessary textbooks and learner support material and the tears and feeling of insecurity by the learners starting school for the first time. However in the Vhembe district ongoing civil unrest by the Malamulele community allegedly prevented learners from going to

because of civil unrest by members of the community,” Galane said. The Democratic Alliance (DA) randomly visited several schools in the Capricorn district yesterday (Wednesday) to assess the readiness of schools on the first day, including the delivery of textbooks and learner support material. At the time of going to print, Polokwane Obeserver had not received any feed-back on the visit and a follow-up will be done in the next publication of the newspaper. Galane said the LDE expects shortages of some textbooks and learner support materials at some schools due to learner migration. He said the LDE will deal with any shortages as soon as the LDE receives notification from the affected schools.

Gone fishing with Police vehicle From page 1 The member, clearly geared to do some serious fishing, was spotted and photographed over two days early this month using the Police vehicle to transport all kinds of bait and fishing gear.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said Police policy clearly states that private use of Police vehicles is not allowed. “The incident was immediately reported to the Provincial Commissioner Fannie Masemola and the member will be disci-

plined if found guilty of misuse of a Police vehicle,” Otto said. She said the Police condemn such action. “We rely on the public to provide us with evidence of such nature in order for members to be acted against,” she said.

decreased by 10% of their usual earn, rectified as per earlier verbal undertaking have fallen on deaf ears, one of the officials explained. In the meantime they had been transferred to stations across Capricorn District as per letters signed by Maponya on 7 January this year. In the documents, of which proof was furnished to Polokwane Observer, it was stated that pursuant to the closure of the college the department had upon taking all material facts and the interests of the public into consideration decided to transfer them in terms of a section of the Public Service Act from the college to operations until further notice or when the college re-opens, whichever happened first. In the letters to the respective recipients it was noted that their transfers was with retention of their salary and macro benefits, but that their lecturing allowances would be terminated. The officials expressed the belief that they were being targeted after raising concern about unethical conduct allegedly displayed by colleagues in May last year. The situation at the provincial government department’s emergency medical rescue service was merely indicative of the tip of the iceberg of problems and challenges faced by paramedics in their line of duty, they reiterated. “The service has collapsed,” one of the officials reiterated, blaming the situation on alleged maladministration and mismanagement of state resources. They reckoned working conditions at EMS were harrowing as resources had been cut to the bone at a time of the department being under administration. Seemingly only the die-hards have remained. Securing skilled paramedics to take up positions within the provincial rescue service had reportedly proven barely impossible and attempts to recruit paramedics last year have allegedly drawn a blank as candidates chose to rather work in the private sector for better salaries, they added. Rising frustration over a number of factors was labelled as contributing to the first eight of 11 members of the initial training component at the college leaving during the last three years. The crucial saving of lives was now left to 12 of 16 operational paramedics who had to cover an entire province, they said. With the department being under administration paramedics had to fork out thousands from their own pockets to acquire tools of the trade to help save lives when summoned to scenes, they indicated. That was not taking into consideration the vast amounts they had to personally pay for attending regular refresher courses. They had just learnt that study leave for all EMS officials had yet again been disapproved by the department for this year. The provincial health department did not have enough ambulances to respond to emergencies and in many instances private ambulances had to be called in as backup, it was highlighted. Paramedics on call were generally forced to spend the night in response vehicles awaiting call-outs to emergencies across vast distances as operational facilities did not exist at some stations, one of the officials stressed. During the festive season marked by a road death toll double that of last year they were working round the clock, it was learnt.

They were in agreement over one thing; that current conditions made the provision of life support in emergency situations impossible. Macks Lesufi, Senior Manager of Communications in the Department of Health was requested to comment on allegations pertaining to the working conditions of paramedics attached to EMS. In addressing the issue of resources allegedly cut to the bone, he said when the department was under administration austerity measures were adopted to make sure that the province put in place proper financial management systems. The outcomes of that exercise have yielded positive results given that the province now had a positive balance sheet, he said. “The measures also had implications on some services being affected, including EMS. However, the department has for the financial years 2014/2015 allocated sufficient resources for EMS.” With regards to services apparently having collapsed due to alleged maladministration and mismanagement of resources, he responded saying “the allegations had to be tested and proven because our facilities are fully functional and operational and there hasn’t been any indication of maladministration”. It was later added that due to the college accreditation having been withdrawn by the HPCSA, idle paramedics attached to the college were being transferred to operations to be utilised fully in service delivery. On paramedics allegedly having to operate with limited resources and paying from their pockets, he said the allegations had to be investigated and proven. “We would like to encourage whoever has information to come forward and report to the department.” Addressing the reported shortage in ambulances, he said during the 2013/2014 budget speech the MEC announced and made a commitment that the department would procure additional ambulances and added that 50 ambulances have been procured and already 23 have been delivered to districts. “In the new financial year the department will continue to procure more, which will include obstetric ambulances.” Also it was indicated that an additional 50 ambulances were being procured before the end of this month. Dealing with the issue of the operational centre he said currently all assignments and allocations were being handled at their EMS call centre. “For the period of (the) Festive Season our teams have been able to attend to all emergencies including rescue services in the province assisting (the) South African Police Service (SAPS).” On paramedics allegedly having to wait in response vehicles, it was stated that paramedics were attached to response vehicles and not offices. Lastly he spoke on the issue of personnel, saying it was a reality that there were shortages of paramedics of specific levels and the department had prioritised that area, including recruitment and additional training of paramedics. It was added that paramedics were scarce nationally. However, Limpopo had an active drive to employ paramedics and that newly appointed paramedics would commence their duties in March 2015.

ER services collapse From page 1 their demotion and unilateral change in employment conditions are lecturers who used to train paramedics from across the province at the now defunct Limpopo College of Emergency Care at the Polokwane/Mankweng Hospital Complex until May last year when the licence was reportedly revoked by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The matter is the result of their recent transfer to remote ambulance stations across the Capricorn District as operational paramedics, an arrangement that has caused major inconvenience to them and their families, they pointed out during an interview with Polokwane Observer this week. In summarising the situation one of the officials remarked that it would not be in the public interest if they either resigned or were dismissed. Their salary packages, Polokwane Observer learnt, were apparently adjusted by the General Manager of Healthcare Support Services, Sindi Maponya without consultation in November 2014. To date requests to have their salary payments, which have been

school resulting in approximately 140 schools in the Malamulele, Giyani and Thohoyandou areas being affected. Paena Galane, Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Education (LDE) confirmed that no schooling is presently taking place in Malamulele. He urged members of the community to consider the future of their children and use alternative methods to highlight their unhappiness with service delivery and other issues. “The LDE sent officials to Malamulele on Monday to speak to leaders of the community and urge them not to use learners as part of their protest action. The future of their children cannot be delayed due to protest action and Grade 12 learners in the Northern Cape were unable to write their final exams last year

Festive Season carnage on Limpopo roads >> Speeding highlighted as biggest cause of accidents >> Capricorn district recorded most accidents

T

he more than 400 accidents reported to the Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison’s Central Communication Centre (CCC) during the Festive Season claimed no fewer than 149 lives in December and a further six within the first seven days of January. Death toll: 159 This is a major increase compared to the 2013 Festive Season when the 324 accidents reported resulted in 77 fatalities. Add to that accidents that occurred after 7 January and the total death toll on Limpopo’s roads since 1 December add up to 159. Statistics provided by Departmental Spokesperson Kagiso Mootane indicated that most accidents occurred in the Capricorn District (96) followed by Mopani and Waterberg (both 85), Vhembe (62) and Sekhukhune (38) during December. Capricorn also topped the list for January with 14 accidents reported out of 49. In terms of fatalities 40 people died in Waterberg, 29 in Sekhukhune, 28 in Vhembe, 23 in Mopane and 22 in Capricorn during December. Three people died in Mopani, two in Sekhukhune and one in Capricorn during the first seven days of January. “A total of 36 pedestrians, 76 passengers and 47 drivers were killed. Most vehicles involved were sedans or passenger cars followed by bakkies, minibuses, heavy motor vehicles and buses,” Mootane said. Speeding Speeding was highlighted as the biggest cause of accidents followed by not keeping following distance, reckless driving, burst tyres, drunken driving, brake failure, turning into oncoming traffic and stray animals. Mootane also kept Polokwane Observer updated during the Festive Season via social media. On 22 December 29 fines were issued for overloading and 32 minibuses impounded

for operating without legal permits during an operation. Two motorists were arrested for speeding at 171 km/h in a 120 km/h zone and 144 km/h in an 80 km/h zone respectively. A further six drivers were arrested in Mopani district for driving under the influence of alcohol. Later the afternoon another five drivers were arrested for drunken driving in Mokopane. The highest alcohol reading was 1,14 g/100 ml from the driver of a bakkie. The legal limit of alcohol in ones blood is only 0,2 g/100 ml. On 23 December 1 412 vehicles were stopped and checked during an operation on the N1 South. Hundred and thirty six summonses were issued, 21 minibuses impounded, one minibus discontinued, 11 arrests made for transporting illegal immigrants, one arrest made for possession of a fraudulent driver’s licence and another for transporting illegal CDs and DVDs. “On 1 January four drivers were arrested for speeding on the N1 South. One of the drivers were doing 169 km/h in a 120 km/h zone while another was arrested on the R71 towards Tzaneen for driving 127 km/h in an 80 km/h zone without a driver’s licence and under the influence of alcohol,” she said. Roads mostly affected by accidents during the Festive Season are R71, R37 from Polokwane to Giyani, N1 North and South, R81 and R36 in Mopani and R37 and R579 in Sekhukhune. KwaZulu-Natal had the highest number of fatalities at 181 followed by Limpopo and Gauteng with the third highest death toll at 136. Mootane also informed that most accidents in the province involved motorists from neighbouring provinces or countries.

City residents fall victim of travel scam WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Polokwane Observer received several complaints during December 2014 and after from residents in the city and abroad that were been duped into paying large sums of money into a bank account of an individual for travelling packages that allegedly failed to materialise. At the time of going to print yesterday (Wednesday) the allegations had yet to be

fully investigated, but according to sources many people have been affected and the amounts involved are expected to add up to thousands of Rand. More information on the alleged scam will be published in next week’s edition of the Polokwane Observer. Members of the public are advised to be careful when responding to adverts of overseas packages that feature abnormal discounts and avoid paying deposits into bank accounts before confirming the particulars of the account holder.

CRIME shorts Man in court for allegedly raping niece A 46-year-old man who was arrested by Police in Jane Furse on 6 January for allegedly raping his 12-year-old niece will appear in the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court again next week for a formal bail application. Police Spokesperson Thapelo Lesufi said the man could not be named to protect the identification of the victim. “It is alleged that the victim was raped on several occasions

but not all incidents were reported as family members reportedly tried solving the problem themselves,” Lesufi said. The latest incident apparently happened in September. “We urge women and children to report any abuse or rape and not to negotiate these cases with the perpetrator,” he said.

Cops, traffic official in dock for corruption

Solomon Malatjie, a Police constable will appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court again on 27 February after he was granted bail of R1 000 during his recent appearance on a charge of alleged corruption. Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said Malatjie supposedly demanded a R1 000 bribe from a person arrested for possession of alleged stolen property. “Malatjie arrested the man late December and when he appeared in court the prosecutor declined to prosecute due to insufficient evi-

dence. The constable allegedly told the man he could still be rearrested and demanded the bribe to allegedly make the docket disappear,” Otto said. Also in Sekhukhune in a separate incident the Nebo Head of Traffic, Steve Boy-Boy Mohlahla appeared in court on charges of fraud after he allegedly impounded a taxi and instead of issuing fines demanded bribes from the taxi owner the have the vehicle returned. “Mohlahla allegedly received R2 800. He was released on R1 200 bail and will appear again on 19 February,” she said. Two Police officials from Polokwane were also arrested last Thursday after they allegedly demanded R100 from all the passengers on a bus during a search and stop operation. “The bus carrying Zimbabweans were stopped in Dorp Street by Mahudu Seabi and Godfrey Ramasinzi. They allegedly entered the bus asking commuters to produce their passports. It is reported that they were told their passports are invalid and that every occupant should pay R100 before they could resume with their journey,” Otto said. Occupants alleg-

edly attacked the two officials and took their name tags and shirts. They fled the bus and the bus driver drove to the Polokwane Police Station. While at the station the two cops arrived and were arrested.

Four arrested for bribery, stolen property

Michael Sithole appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of bribery with two others, Kenneth Manyanagala and Wungisani Dlamini who face charges of possession of alleged stolen property after they were arrested on Sunday. They were denied bail and will appear in court again next week. According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto Police officers stopped a vehicle carrying eight alleged stolen truck tyres. “The driver and one passenger were arrested while a third one got away. On the way to the Police station one suspect got a call on his cell phone which was handed to one of the Police members. The caller offered R10 000 to have the suspects released and the vehicle and tyres returned,” Otto said. Otto added that the man later phoned again offering R14 000 but when he and Police met, he was arrested on the spot.

omewhere in the world a group of dedicated individuals are working towards creating the dynamics for a new land speed record to be attempted in the second half of this year, an occurrence that would see the eyes of the world fixed on South Africa. When the aerodynamic nose of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) is turned to Haakskeenpan in the Northern Cape for an extraordinary happening in history, Limpopo entrepreneur and

Bloodhound SSC education ambassador Temba Moitsi is likely to be among the appreciative crowd gathering at a designated viewing point. In an interview the owner of an automotive repair business in Polokwane shares his enthusiasm about the upcoming event, which should see the driver of The Car aiming at a goal speed of 1 609 km/h achieved within 44 to 55 seconds in 7 tons of carbon fibre and titanium propelled by a jet engine and hybrid solid fuel rocket over 20 km of flat surface with an elevation variation distance of less than 40 cm. Against 20 metric tonnes of drag the driver, Andy Green who is a fighter pilot revered as current land speed record holder, would not be able to eject from the seat designed according to his specifications, Moitsi says as he proceeds to share the specs. He relates that the driver would be expected to race the vehicle along the stretch of gravel for a return journey to the starting point by bringing the vehicle to a brisk halt for purposes of refuelling the jet engine and replacing the rocket. Getting the vehicle to a standstill would apparently require the shutting down of engines through the firing of parachutes,

activating the supporting air brakes and wheel brakes that could only be used at a lower speed, Moitsi points out. Once back on track the vehicle would have to pass the halfway measured mile mark for a second speed reading within a period of an hour for certification by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), he explains. It would entail racing against the laws of physics itself, Moitsi stresses. Moitsi’s affair with the Bloodhound SSC project dates back to 2012, four years after the start thereof. When he speaks his tone reflects excitement about what is believed to be the fastest vehicle in the world. However, it doesn’t end there as this young ambassador is adamant about the message behind a project he reckons to be more beneficial to South Africa than the hosting of 2010 Fifa World Cup. To him the project, steered from the United Kingdom by Bloodhound SSC Director Richard Noble who is renowned for holding the land speed record from 1983 to 1997, is about creating a love for Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering

The Bloodhound SuperSonic Car (SSC). among tomorrow’s generation. Most exciting is to introduce the project to kids in a familiar environment and language, something Moitsi plans to implement this year. A lot of groundwork still has to be done to drive home the concept in South Africa which is the host country, according to Moitsi. Counting among an estimated 500 ambassadors across SA and the only one in Limpopo, Moitsi stresses the need for growing the numbers to spread the message in order to reach and inspire the youth. While the hype about an exceptional mobile is bound to build up over the next few months, there is a young man from Limpopo who would surely not be able to contain his excitement about a single moment in time he is privileged to be part of.

BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com A project to upgrade streets and storm water drainage systems in the vicinity of the new High Court building in Polokwane commenced on Monday resulting in certain sections of surrounding streets being closed during the process which is envisaged to be completed by 30 April. Tidimalo Chuene, Communications and Marketing Director of the Polokwane Municipality in a media release stated that in order to facilitate the work it was necessary that some street sections be closed for through traffic and only permit holders residing or working off the closed street sections be allowed access. >> DA laments high dropout rate between Grades 10 to 12 >> ANCWL satisfied with pass rate

WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com

M

ixed reaction was received from the various political organisations involved with education in Limpopo following the results of the 2014 Grade 12 results being announced last week.

Limpopo’s pass rate increased from 71,8% in 2013 to 72,9% last year with no incidences at any of the examination centres in the province. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo issued a media statement shortly after the announcement of the results and urged the Department of Education to tell no lies nor claim easy victories. The media statement stated that despite the lofty celebrations for a select few, very little recognition was made by the department about the learners that were not retained in the system since the beginning of the CAPS Curriculum in 2012. The DA has established that Limpopo lost over 100 000 or 59,3% of the province’s learners between Grades 10 to 12 making Limpopo

the second highest province regarding learner dropouts. The DA is calling on the education department to implement effective systems to support and retain learners and to find good mechanisms to enhance learners’ performance, and then an 80% pass rate will no longer be a dream, the media statement concluded. The Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) Gilbert Kganyago congratulated the two top performing schools in the Capricorn district, Hoërskool Pietersburg and Dendron Secondary School for their outstanding results. He also congratulated the ten schools adopted by CDM in order to improve their matric results in 2014 for performing above expectation.

Slight increase in Limpopo matric pass rate WARREN BLUNT >>warrenb.observer@gmail.com Despite failing to reach the target of 80% set in 2014, Limpopo still performed admirably when the results of the National Senior Certificate exams for the class of 2014 were announced last week. The provincial pass rate was 72,9% compared to the previous year’s 71,8%. The national pass rate was 75,8%, down by 2,4 percent from the previous year. During the announcement of the results and award ceremony for the top Grade 12 achievers from last year, it was noted that three schools in the province achieved a zero percent pass rate. Speaking at the award ceremony last week, Premier Stan Mathabatha said he was embarrassed by the dismal performances at the

three schools, Makidi Secondary School and Sethula Secondary School in Sekhukhune and Seroletshidi Secondary School in the Waterberg district. He instructed the Limpopo Department of Education (LDE) to investigate the matter and at the time of going to print yesterday (Wednesday) senior officials from LDE was on a site visit to the three affected schools, according to LDE Spokesperson Paena Galane. Mathabatha went on to say that he was disappointed by the remarks made by a union member on a local radio station stating that Limpopo’s matric pass rate target for 2014 was just a pipe dream. “That is an insult to us as the leadership of the province. We set our target high because we are not mediocre. The province has shown a steady increase from the poor

pass rate of 30% in 1994 to that of 72,9% in 2014 and we expect that to increase even more this year,” Mathabatha was quoted to have said at the award ceremony. Galane said that Limpopo’s results were the sixth best countrywide and the only province where none of the examination results were held back at all examination centres. Acting Head of Department for LDE, Martin Mashaba said the LDE has planned to give extra lessons to Grade 12 learners in poor performing schools in order to improve the matric pass rate in 2015. The top matric achiever for 2014 award was shared by two Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) learners, Johan Krüger and Julia Alsemgeest, who both achieved seven distinctions. PHS set a new record of 495 distinctions in 2014 and had a pass rate of 99,2%.

“This is commendable, given the nature of challenges that these schools faced previously, and we are delighted that our efforts and involvement made an impact in these schools,” Kganyago was quoted as saying in the media statement. ANC Women’s League Spokesperson for Limpopo, Joyce Maluleke said the league applauds the Department of Education for achieving a 72,9 % pass rate regardless of not achieving its target of 80%. She concluded that the league in Limpopo remains confident that Premier Stan Mathabatha’s administration will ensure that that the Department of Education will reach its targeted 80% pass rate in 2015.

CDM’s audit outcome due to prudent compliance BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com Capricorn District Municipality’s (CDM) Municipal Manager, Ngoako Molokomme is confident that the municipality’s unqualified audit outcome for the 2013/2014 financial year is due to prudent compliance with financial and audit management systems and processes. “There is a lot of work, skill and expertise that goes into achieving a clean audit. It is not merely about accounting, it is about accountability,”, adding that the good audit outcome is a fulfilment to the district’s commitment to the 2014 Operation Clean Audit that comprises a combination of sound financial management, leadership, strong political will, rigorous monitoring and open, ethical and transparent administration,” Molokomme is quoted to have said. CDM Media Liaison Officer Moffat Senyatsi in a recent media statement said: “An unqualified audit outcome means that the Auditor-General is satisfied that CDM’s books are sound and that every cent that has been spent can be accounted for, that CDM’s annual performance report is credible, and that the district has complied with laws and regulations.” In his audit findings, the Auditor-General found PHOTO: ARCHIVES

Gilbert Kganyago, Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality.

that CDM’s financial statements present fairly and in all material respects, the financial position and the financial performance of the municipality as at 30 June 2014. The Auditor-General did not identify any significant deficiencies in CDM’s internal controls. Executive Mayor Gilbert Kganyago is quoted to have said: “Our aim is to make sure that the outcome is strongly connected with accelerated and tangible service provision to the rural and poor communities in our district. Having achieved improved audit performance the next step is to match this outcome with resolute determination to fight against corruption. This will enable CDM to be a champion of the rural areas and the poor in improving their quality of living and working conditions.”

The match will be a continuation of the three-year partnership between the Polokwane Municipality and the Blue Bulls Company that has seen a total of R1,7 million raised towards 30 charities and bursaries towards needy students. Last year’s warm-up match helped contribute towards the tertiary education of 56 learners in and around the city. It will be the third time in four years that the Cheetahs will be locking horns with the Bulls in Polokwane and the visitors will be looking to avenge their defeat in 2013. Last year the DHL Stormers visited Polokwane for the first time for the popular warm-up fixture and scored the winning try in the dying moments of the match by replacement winger, Scott van Breda to defeat the Bulls 26-19. The CEO of the Blue Bulls Company, Barend van Graan said the Stormers were unavailable for the fixture this year and the Cheetahs will once again make the trip to Polokwane. “The warm-up match in Polokwane has become an important part of the team’s pre-season preparations and the Bulls are looking forward to a fourth year of a great relationship with Polokwane Municipality. The Bulls are honoured to be involved with the further education of disadvantaged students in Limpopo and the professionalism shown by the organising committee is always of the highest standard, and the reception we receive from the fans is something our players and

management really look forward to,” van Graan said at a media briefing to launch the match at the end of last year. Tickets for the match are available at Computicket outlets countrywide. Tickets cost R120 for the grand stand, R80 for the east stand and R60 for the south or north stands. Scholars pay R30. Polokwane Observer readers will also get the opportunity to win a set of double-tickets for the match. Look out for the details in the sport pages of today’s Polokwane Observer and next week’s publication. Hospitality packages are available for up to 22 people in the sky boxes above the west and east stands. ormer Polokwane resident and a member of Team Rhide SA, Brian Baragwanath experienced heartbreak during his first attempt at the gruelling Dakar Rally last week in Argentina when he had to retire on the second day after tyre failure. Baragwanath and team-mate Hannes Saaijman formed Team Rhide SA in the quad category of the race, derived from the word ‘rhino’ as the team competed to raise awareness against rhino poaching. After months of intense preparation for the race that started in Argentina and continues through Bolivia and Chile in South America, Baragwanath had to call it quits after engine failure on the first day and the tyres of his Yamaha Raptor disintegrated during the second day and he was unable to complete the second stage before the cut-off time. However, Baragwanath’s misfortune proved to be Saaijman’s gain as the team could focus all their attention on their remaining rider.

Saaijman had the forethought of carrying extra tyres during that fateful second stage and has been steadily gaining on the leaders in the quad category of the race. He is currently in 11th position overall in the quad category and aiming for a top ten finish after the rest day on Tuesday for the quad contenders. With the Dakar Rally consisting of a total of 9 500 kilometres through some of the toughest terrain in the world in 14 days, Saaijman has a good chance of finishing in the top ten when the rally ends in Buenos Aires on Saturday. After being forced to retire from the race, Baragwanath, whose father, Clive is manager of Team Rhide SA immediately became part of the back-up crew to support Saaijman for the rest of the race. During Tuesday’s rest day only 24 quads out of the original 45 that started the rally were still in the running and Saaijman hopes to be at the finish over the weekend. The Polish rider and former winner, Rafal Sonik leads the quad category on his Yamaha Raptor at the time of going to print yesterday (Wednesday).

Marques brings with him a wealth of experience to the club, as he has coached extensively in the Absa Premiership,” Club Spokesperson, Berry Ramunenyiwa said. He also mentioned that they are happy that all players have reported to camp after spending time with their families during the Christmas break. “They reported on 6 January and we decided to come early because we want to ensure that the team is ready competitive football when the season resumes after the African Cup of Nations,” Ramunenyiwa said.

Skakel Willie Opperman by 082 300 8883 vir meer besonderhede.
