Dear Oberlin Community,

As we proudly present Empowering Futures: 202324 CED Insights, I am thrilled to celebrate three years of success in reimagining Career Exploration and Development at Oberlin College and Conservatory. This report encapsulates the programs, resources, and services that prepare and empower our students for post-Oberlin success.

One of our most significant milestones in 2024 was the remarkable achievement of the Internship+ Program, which disbursed nearly $1 million to support experiential learning opportunities. These funds enabled students to gain hands-on experience and build the skills necessary to thrive in their future careers.

In our ongoing commitment to equipping students for professional success, we introduced several new initiatives, including:

• Expanding the Winter Term Micro-Internship Program to create more opportunities for students to explore diverse industries and build their networks.

• Institutionalization of critical Winter Term courses, including the EMT course and the LSAT prep course

• Development of artificial intelligence resources, empowering students to leverage AI tools for career advancement.

• Leadership development programming tailored to preprofessional student clubs, such as the moot court team and the Pre-Law Society,

These achievements were made possible through the support of Oberlin alumni, parents, and friends. Your generosity and dedication have empowered our students to explore and achieve their aspirations.

As we look ahead, our mission remains steadfast: to prepare Oberlin students to lead and succeed in an evolving world. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey. Together, we are empowering futures.

With gratitude and pride, Anthony Pernell-McGee

PUTTING THE LIBERAL ARTS TO WORK. PURSUING YOUR MEANING AND PURPOSE.

The mission of Career Exploration and Development (CED) is to help Obies chart a meaningful path toward their professional future. Our holistic mentoring approach encourages students to discern and develop the skills, values, and direction best aligned with their evolving career goals. We offer one-on-one advising and cohort programming to inspire connections and empower students to excel.

WE HELP OBIES APPLY THEORY TO PRACTICE

For liberal arts graduates, applying theory to practice is essential because it bridges the gap between academic concepts and real-world applications. CED uses the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies as a framework to help students build the key skills and abilities that employers seek in new graduates. The NACE competencies are built into all experiential learning opportunities sponsored by CED.

COMPETENCIES FOR A CAREER-READY WORKFORCE DEFINITIONS

Career & Self Development

Proactively develop oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization.

Communication

Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.

Critical Thinking

Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information.

Equity & Inclusion

Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global cultures. Engage in anti-racist practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, and policies of racism.

Leadership

Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals.

Professionalism

Knowing work environments differ greatly, understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace.

Teamwork

Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities.

Technology

Understand and leverage technologies ethically to enhance efficiencies, complete tasks, and accomplish goals.

CAREER READINESS

OBERLIN COLLEGE AND CONSERVATORY ALLOWS STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR CAREER INTERESTS, GAIN REALWORLD EXPERIENCE, AND DEVELOP A PROFESSIONAL NETWORK.

The Internship+ program seamlessly integrates cocurricular and curricular opportunities, ensuring that all students can access enriching experiences that complement their academic pursuits and prepare them for successful futures.

Internship+ provides third-year students with opportunities to build the skills and confidence needed for high-quality unpaid or lowpaid summer experiential learning opportunities. Students who complete the Internship+ program can receive up to $5,000 to support an internship, research-based project, or other preprofessional or performance-focused experience.

New Initiatives, Resources, and Programs

Neurodivergent Training for Career Advisors

Neurodivergent individuals make up somewhere between 15 percent and 20 percent of the total population. Most colleges and universities do not provide effective career services to their neurodivergent students. CED wants to close this gap and provide neurodivergent students with career services and resources that support their success in their chosen career fields. In collaboration with Landmark College, CED provided a series on how to coach and provide career services to neurodivergent students.

Career Access Funds

Career Access Funds (CAF) are financial resources Oberlin provides to support students in their professional development journey. These funds are designated for students facing economic barriers to career-enhancing opportunities. CAF aims to create equitable access to career-building opportunities, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder students’ career readiness and advancement.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Resources

Each career community has curated articles and resources on AI to educate students on the evolving impact of artificial intelligence on their chosen career fields. Students are able to access these resources on OberLink.

Photobooth

A professional headshot is vital for college students as it creates a strong first impression, builds credibility, and aligns with their brand. It enhances networking opportunities, ensures platform consistency, and reflects professionalism, helping students stand out to employers and recruiters. A polished headshot prepares students for job applications, career fairs, and professional networking. The Iris Air photobooth removes financial barriers by providing Obies with free headshots.

NEW RESOURCE

Professional Clothing Closet

A free professional clothing closet removes financial barriers, promotes equity, and ensures access to professional attire for interviews, career fairs, networking, and other events. It boosts confidence, supports career readiness, encourages sustainability, and reduces last-minute stress, helping students feel prepared and empowered to succeed professionally.

LSAT Prep Course by Princeton Review

CED offers a Law School Admission Test (LSAT) prep course with comprehensive instruction, practice exams, and targeted strategies for all test sections. It helps students build confidence, improve performance, and achieve competitive scores for law school admissions.

EMT Course by Joint Vocational School (JVS)

This emergency medical technician training course prepares students to provide emergency care by teaching life-saving skills such as CPR, injury stabilization, and medication administration. It covers medical knowledge, patient assessment, and emergency response techniques while emphasizing communication, teamwork, and ethical responsibilities. Students gain hands-on experience through simulations and fieldwork, preparing them for certification exams and careers in emergency services or healthcare.
