8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Family Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise. 2. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light:

3. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends above, pleasures pure and undefiled: 4. For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven: 5. For thy church which evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore this pure sacrifice of love,

Words: Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917) Music: England’s Lane, English melody adapted by Geoffrey Turton Shaw (1879-1943) (Ancient & Modern – 537)

Collect Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 55.10-13 Thus says the LORD: For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the LORD for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Second Reading – Romans 8.1-11* There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law – indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Gradual Hymn*

1. Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, and let's give the message to the people we meet. So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of his Spirit, let the fruit grow, tell the people of Jesus, let his love show. 2. Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on;, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend. 3. Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, his Spirit is near. Words: Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949) Music: Light Up The Fire, Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949), arr Paul Leddington Wright (b 1951) © 1974 worshiptogether.com (Ancient & Modern – 27)

Gospel – Matthew 13.1-9,18-23 Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen! Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. Holy Spirit, living breath of God, breathe new life into my willing soul. Bring the presence of the risen Lord to renew my heart and make me whole. Cause your word to come alive in me; give me faith for what I cannot see, give me passion for your purity; Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

2. Holy Spirit, come abide within, may your joy be seen in all I do. Love enough to cover every sin, in each thought and deed and attitude. Kindness to the greatest and the least, gentleness that sows the path of peace. Turn my striving into works of grace; breath of God, show Christ in all I do.

3. Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth, giving life to all that God has made, show your power once again on earth, cause your church to hunger for your ways. May the fragrance of our prayers arise; lead us on the road of sacrifice, that in unity the face of Christ may be clear for all the world to see. 1. Therefore I will sing and I will rejoice for his Spirit lives in me. Christ the living one has overcome and we share in his victory.

2. All the powers of death and hell and sin lie crushed beneath his feet. Jesus owns the name above all names, crowned with honour and majesty. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1986 Kingsway’s Thankyou Music (The Source – 167)

1. Help us, O Lord, to learn the truths thy word imparts: to study that thy laws may be inscribed upon our hearts.

2. Help us, O Lord, to live the faith which we proclaim, that all our thoughts and words and deeds may glorify thy name.

3. Help us, O Lord, to teach the beauty of thy ways, that yearning souls may find the Christ, and sing aloud his praise. Words: William Watkins Reid (1923-2009) Music: Sandys, from W Sandys’s Christmas Carols, 1833 (Ancient & Modern – 658)

Post Communion Prayer Grant, O Lord, we beseech you, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance, that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. Go forth and tell! O church of God, awake! God's saving news to all the nations take; proclaim Christ Jesus, saviour, Lord, and king, that all the world his worthy praise may sing.

7

2. Go forth and tell! God's love embraces all; he will in grace respond to all who call: how shall they call if they have never heard the gracious invitation of his word? 3. Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide: share God's good gifts let no one be denied; live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose, your ransomed powers for his sole glory use. 4. Go forth and tell! O church of God, arise! go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies; go till all nations his great name adore and serve him, Lord and king for evermore Words: James Seddon (1915-1983) Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) – A&M 394 © The Representatives of the late James Edward Seddon / admin The Jubilate Group (Ancient & Modern – 477)

Iain and Charlotte, our new curates, both love it – does anyone want to join them for a day trip, on Sunday 27th August? The venue is close, about 45 minutes drive, at Boughton House near Kettering. The plan would be for families to go under their own steam, we meet and sit together for the 10:30 Communion service, then do our own thing for the afternoon and/or evening. There are loads of interesting talks, mainstage bands, weird and wonderful fringe events, workshops. See http://www.greenbelt.org.uk/2017lineup for more info. We're not sure

Bishop of Loughborough

The appointment was announced on Tuesday of Canon Dr Guli FrancisDehqani as the first Bishop of Loughborough. Guli is currently Curate Training Officer and Advisor for Women's Ministry in the Diocese of Peterborough and a member of General Synod, as well as being the wife of Canon Lee Francis-Dehqani, our Team Rector. Guli is to be consecrated a bishop at Canterbury Cathedral on 30th November and will begin her ministry soon after that. This means that Lee will, in due course, be resigning as Vicar of Oakham – it is their intention to move to the Leicester Diocese in the early months of 2018 once the Bishop's House is ready, and when the

family is settled, Lee hopes to find a suitable ministerial post there. Lee has said “I am thrilled for Guli and I know she will make a wonderful Bishop, although it will be very difficult for our whole family to leave Oakham after 13 very happy years. Please be assured of my commitment to ministry here in the months that lie ahead.” The Bishop of Peterborough and Archdeacon are already considering the needs of Oakham and the wider Team and planning for future recruitment. You can read more about the appointment on the website. The post of Bishop of Loughborough is new for the Church of England. The motion applying to Her Majesty The Queen to create the See was only passed by General Synod in February 2017. As the first Bishop of Loughborough Guli will take a full role in the work of the Church across Leicester and Leicestershire, but the post will also have a focus on supporting Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) clergy, lay workers and congregations in the county. “I’m very excited about the potential for this role which draws together several important themes in the current life of the Church,” says Guli. “Whilst being a bishop for the whole diocese, it will be a particular joy and a privilege to learn from and draw out the rich resources of Christians from minority ethnic communities.” Born in Isfahan, Iran, Guli’s family was forced to leave the country in the

13

wake of the Iranian Revolution in 1980. She was 14. Guli’s father, Bishop Hassan Dehqani-Tafti, was the Anglican Bishop of Iran from 1961 until his retirement in 1990, and was the first ethnic Persian to become a bishop of Iran since the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century, and her mother, Margaret, was the daughter of Bishop William Thompson, Bishop Hassan’s predecessor. Guli attended Nottingham and Bristol Universities and was ordained in 1998, serving her curacy at Mortlake with East Sheen in the Southwark Diocese, before joining the University of London Chaplaincy team as Chaplain to the Royal Academy of Music and St Marylebone C of E Secondary School from 2002 to 2004. “Guli’s rich understanding of the world Church, together with her experience of training and pastoral work in the UK, will be a huge asset to our diocese,” said the Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow. “I am looking forward to working with her as a close colleague and I know from my own experience that she and her family will receive a very warm welcome from the diverse communities of the city and county.” Commenting on the appointment, the Bishop of Peterborough, the Rt Revd Donald Allister said, “Guli has been an outstanding Curate Training Officer in this diocese for the past six years, and a first class Adviser in Women’s Ministry. Her care for our curates has been exemplary and she has been a

14

great champion for women’s ministry. We shall be very sorry to lose her, but we are delighted that her considerable gifts have been recognised in the national church, and we wish her well in her new ministry.” A mother of three school aged children, Guli is married to Canon Lee Francis-Dehqani, Team Rector of Oakham. Before becoming a priest Guli worked as a religious programmes producer for the BBC. Guli will be consecrated as Bishop of Loughborough by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, in Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday 30 November and welcomed to Leicester Diocese at a service in Leicester Cathedral at a later date.
