Driving was still a rare experience in B.C. 100 years ago. The streetcars and Interurban tram were the more usual forms of public transportation and ALYN EDWARDS there were still lots Classic of horse and buggies RIDES travelling the muddy streets. There were only 2,000 motor vehicles registered in the Vancouver at that time and electric cars, then as now, were being touted as the future. Motorcar salesmen of the day had to first sell the concept of motoring in order to convince the buyer that he or she should have an automobile. They often had to spend hours and sometimes days teaching the potential buyer and family members how to operate a

motorcar before a purchase agreement could be struck. It wasn’t easy. In 1912, only Cadillacs had electric starters. All other cars of the day, including Winton, Locomobile, Napier, Peerless, Pierce Arrow, Packard and Model T Fords, had to be cranked by hand to get them running. Many owners had chauffeurs to look after their vehicle as well as drive it. Motorists had to plan even the shortest trip a century ago – they didn’t just jump in their motorcar and drive away. Automobile engines had priming cups over each cylinder which had to be filled with gasoline that had been purchased in five gallon tin cans. Drivers would open the petcocks to let the fuel drip into the cylinders, set the hand controls for spark and throttle and then pray that the engine would start on the first turn with the crank. That was

seldom the case. Cold weather starting was another matter. Before antifreeze, motorists would drain the water out of their cars after using them so radiators and engine blocks wouldn’t freeze and crack. Then they had to fill radiators with water before attempting to start the vehicle again. In extreme cold there are stories of motorists starting small fires under their engine crankcase to heat the oil to make starting possible. Most automobiles of 1912 were open vehicles with folding canvas tops. Only clip-on side curtains kept the weather out and the cellulose windows would fog up, becoming a danger for drivers trying to see what was coming at them. Inexperienced drivers often banged into other cars, pedestrians and wagons pulled by horses. Vancouver was often choked by a Continued on Pg. B3

The new Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed Metroland Media Carguide Magazine

With the final design signed-off and engineering development work progressing apace, Aston Martin has revealed the first images of the new

V12 Zagato (road car) scheduled for production later this year. It will have a price of £330,000, plus local taxes. The V12 Zagato is the pinnacle of the Vantage range. It is also the latest expression of a successful creative

collaboration that has given rise to a series of striking GT cars over the last half-century, the original and most iconic of which being the DB4GT Zagato. Not only does this masterpiece rank among the most desirable, collectable and valuable The £330,000 (plus local taxes) Aston Martin V12 Zagato production car will be shown at the coming Geneva Motor Show.

cars in history, but its 50th anniversary also provided the inspiration for the V12 Zagato. Built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, production of the V12 Zagato will be strictly limited to no more than 150 cars. Creating each V12 Zagato is a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 manhours to complete. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand-crafted aluminum and carbon fibre.

Kia unveiled the Track’ster concept at the recent Chicago Auto Show. Amid the driving rhythm of heavy-metal music, smoke and blinding lights, Kia Motors America took the wraps off a performanceoriented three-door Soul coupe concept that hints at what could possibly be the future of Kia’s wildly successful Soul. The Track’ster is not just another pretty face; it has a body to match. Sculpted surfaces seem to flow into each other naturally. The flanks are smooth but accented with welldefined wheel enclosures. The wheelbase on the concept is stretched to 101.2-inches, almost an inch longer than the production Soul. As expected on a car with the Track’ster’s performance intentions, large 14-inch Brembo vented and cross-drilled disc brakes are embraced by six-piston calipers up front and 13.6-inch discs are paired with fourpiston calipers at the rear. A 2.0-litre turbocharged in-line-four engine puts 250 horsepower to the road, a 66 per cent increase over that of the production Soul. Power is routed to all four wheels via an electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system. The short-throw six-speed manual transmission is capped with a stubby spherical shift lever. The Track’ster rides on a lowered sport suspension tuned for track performance.

VICTORIA NEWS • OAK BAY NEWS • SAANICH NEWS • GOLDSTREAM NEWS GAZETTE • PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW - Friday, February 17, 2012 ‘Automobilists’ and passengers had to dress for motoring to keep warm in winter and to keep the road grime off their clothing. Horse dung dried on the roads and rose as dust thrown up by automobiles, carts and carriages. Motoring apparel included hats, dusters, capes, boots, scarves, gloves and goggles. Without protective clothing, motorists would arrive at their destination absolutely filthy. City roads had dust, mud and ruts, while suburban roads were often crude paths through the forest with no road signs or clear markings for passing points. Farmers were often employed to use their horses to drag bogged down automobiles to solid ground. Automobiles in 1912 often carried two spare tires. Many didn’t have demountable rims. Motorists with punctures and flat tires would have to take the tire off the rim like a bicycle wheel, patch the inner tube by the side of the road, then get all the rings and locks in place to remount the tire without puncturing the tube again and then pump up the tire to 60 psi with a hand pump. Night driving was challenging with few street lamps in the cities and none in the country. Vehicle headlamps had acetylene burners that needed to be lit and adjusted for proper combustion. Tail lamps and side lamps burned kerosene and were often left burning at

haze and fog that hung in the air for much of the year. This was pollution caused by coal and sawdust-burning furnaces coupled with industrial emissions from mills and factories right in the city. “I remember driving down Arbutus Street in the 1950s when you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face,” says Peter Trant, whose passion is restoring century-old vehicles. “You could hear the foghorn blowing day after day at Point Atkinson because of the fog and pollution. It made it very difficult for motorists to see anything.”

by Cadillac the year before. Closed cars with roll-up windows would soon become more popular and all weather motoring with ventilation and heaters gradually became commonplace. These developments enabled longer distance driving which encouraged the building of new safer roads, some with hard surfaces. New road and vehicle safety features made motoring more practical and more comfortable than 100 years ago. night to help others see parked vehicles. Collisions between vehicles could be catastrophic because there were no passenger restraints or safety glass. Occupants could be thrown through plate glass windshields. Motorcar maintenance was excessive and daily tasks were often recommended by manufacturers. Cleaning was unending with nickel and brass radiators, lamps and accessories to be polished. Peter Trant’s 1912 Kissel Kar is an example of what would be considered extravagant and radical motoring a century ago. The giant 500 cubic inch, six cylinder engine providing 60 horsepower coupled to an industry leading four-speed overdrive transmission could propel the semiracer automobile at speeds approaching 60 miles per hour. All this in a two-seat vehicle with no additional room for even a suitcase. It 1911, the year before Trant’s Kissel Kar was built in Hartford, Wisconsin, Ray Harroun won the first running of the Indianapolis 500 race in his Marmon Wasp. His average speed was 74.6 miles per hour. The top speed of motorcars on urban dirt roads a century ago was about 20 miles per hour. Motoring would become a lot easier in 1913. For that model year, most manufacturers adopted the ‘automatic’ electric starter that had been pioneered

Peter Trant with his 100-year-old 1912 KisselKar semi racer that he restored from a pile of pieces.

SLEEP APNEA?

Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.

Heartburn Reflux

The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit). Health professionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 95% acidic food (meat, noodles, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to 80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pH alkaline level close to a healthy 7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box.

Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief and having no side effects. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last 4 years had increasing reflux despite taking anti-acid products. I am also trying to eat more alkaline food. Grzegorz Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL Suffered with reflux, choking and coughing. After starting Bell #39 I feel great. Amazed about the complete relief. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Katarina Tusa, 63, North York, ON Was sleeping sitting up to avoid reflux. I thought I had this health problem for life like my other family members. Bell #39 brought quick relief. Can sleep now normally, have more energy, feel great. Bell products are quite #39 different. Mopar celebrates 75th anniversary Metroland Media Carguide Magazine

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible offers an astounding 650 hp V8.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible helps SVT mark 20 years of high-performance vehicles Metroland Media Carguide Magazine

The official launch of SVT came during the 1992 Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. Now Ford returned to Chicago to celebrate its past and look to the future with the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible. In honour of SVT’s anniversary, a commemorative lighted sill plate will be used in the 2013 Shelby GT500 to celebrate the many years of performance vehicles. The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra offered a 235-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 engine, which demonstrates just how far the products have come in 20 years. The 2013 Shelby GT500 with its 650 hp V8 marks the latest offering from

one of the oldest and most successful automotive performance groups in the world. The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible with the optional Performance Package is faster around a track than the outgoing model. The new convertible shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models. Keys to the improved lap times are the power boost from the new 5.8-litre supercharged V8 producing 650 horsepower, as well as the SVTdesigned Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers available on the Performance Package and the all-new chassis tuning. Accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button, normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities.

Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering with reduced pitch under braking. The upgraded dampers allowed SVT engineers to tune the convertible more aggressively for the track, while still being able to maintain desirable onroad manners. A new Brembo brake system also is a key enabler in boosting the performance of the convertible. The new brakes offer drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control, while new sixpiston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors further improve braking performance. More aggressive brake pads also help the car achieve high deceleration and further robustness for more driver confidence.

The Mopar brand will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2012. Starting as the name of a single product (anti-freeze), the Mopar brand evolved over 75 years, developing a strong identity that represents authentic parts and accessories, expert service and convenient car care. Today, Mopar is building on its reputation for top-quality, trusted service and high performance. The Mopar brand was officially trademarked in 1937 at a meeting of the Chrysler Parts Corporation’s Activities Council in Highland Park, Mich. The committee mulled over a list of names for the anti-freeze product, coming up with “MoPar,” for the words MOtor and PARts. Mopar became a brand name for most Chrysler Corporation parts, and gradually evolved into the name of the parts business itself. The moniker was officially attached to a Chrysler parts organization in the late 1960s, when Chrysler created an aftermarket business unit named the Mopar Division. With Chrysler Group LLC’s partnership with Fiat S.p.A, Mopar continues to expand its global footprint. In 2011, Mopar opened operations in Shanghai and Dubai along with Mopar Express Lanes in the Middle East. The brand started showcasing its vast product portfolio at international auto shows including Frankfurt and Bologna. And to support the North American launch of the new Fiat 500, Mopar introduced more than 150 quality-tested accessories.
