any industrial branches such as textile, food, automotive, electronics, etc. are dependent on the machinery manufacturing sector to continue their activities and be updated. Developments in the manufacturing and technology of machine tools directly affect the machinery industry. Machine tools, which are regarded to be among the main components of the manufacturing of machines required for the production of industry, have an outstanding position in the machinery manufacturing sector as the only machinery group that can manufacture itself. Machine tool design and manufacturing, one of the important branches of basic engineering and manufacturing industry, is among the strategic and prioritized sectors in many countries. All the industrialized countries that lead the world economy are efficient players in the machine tools sector as well. The state of the machıne tool sector ın Turkey The number of the companies that manufacture machine tools in Turkey is not known exactly. The Machinery Exporters Union (MİB) has 80 members that manufacture machine tools and the tools and holders used by the machines. The exact number of manufacturers cannot be learned because unregistered manufacturers and those active as micro-SMEs are impossible to keep track of. The number of small-scale businesses changes in years in parallel with the state of the market. According

to the determinations by MİB, smallscale companies, despite existing in high numbers, make a very minor contribution to the market within the economy of scale. The majority of the manufacturers in Turkey are active in the Marmara Region; however, there are also companies in İzmir, Ankara, Konya and Kayseri that make major contributions to manufacturing and exports. Reports about the sector reveal that especially exporting companies keep manufacturing alive. The machine tool sector, which increased its exports by an average of 10 percent in the last two years, aims at a 12-percent increase in its exports by the end of 2013. The increase in manufacturing was 5 percent in 2012. While an increase was observed in exports and domestic manufacturing in 2013,

imports decreased by 10-11 percent. The domestic market is therefore expected to shrink by about 5 percent within the year. In 2013, the economic conditions in the European Union countries, and the countries in the region, which are essential markets for Turkey, did not recover as desired. In addition, domestic manufacturing was negatively affected by the fact that the sector’s exports to big markets such as China and India were insufficient. Experts estimate that experts will increase at the same rate in 2014 and the recession in imports will continue. Thinking that the way to increase the existing exports of the machine tool sector, which exports more than 65 percent of its manufacturing output, is to place emphasis on markets such as China, India and Brazil, experts
