JOANNE ROMERO

Flower Power HI-TECH PIPE CLEANER

pril showers bring May flowers. You know what else brings flowers? Graduations and Mother’s Day celebrations. This weekend, my family and I are celebrating both. After two years, I’m happy to say I have graduated with my master’s degree in communication from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. My mom is here to help celebrate, and we’ll continue the merriment for Mother’s Day. If you’re like me, you keep flowers in the bouquet as long as you can. Yes, I must admit that I am not known for my flower-arranging skills. Luckily, I’ve been learning some quick tricks of the trade and getting better at it. If the flowers keep coming, I’ll get the practice I need. (Hint. Hint.) Until then, I’ll stick to these tips for my favorite flora. Before starting, choose your desired vase and add room-temperature water followed by cut-flower food. Then, gently hold your flowers next to the vase to discern how much trimming they’ll need. Trim at least 1 inch from the stems at a 45-degree angle using a utility knife, and remove any leaves that will fall below the water line. The stems absorb water better when cut. For branches, use a strong cutter such as a lopper to cut a slit or two at the base of each stem. This type of cut will allow for the most water absorption. Then, trim twigs that will fall below the water line. Place each stem into the vase, one by one. Start with the tallest, largest flowers at the center, and work your way around. Move on to the next largest and so on, filling in with smaller flowers as you go.

OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE Place them at differing angles to achieve the best balance and to show off each flower’s individual shape. Save leafy stems to fill in gaps at the end. Position the vase away from direct sunlight and heat. Every two to three days, re-cut the stems and freshen the water. Add cut-flower food as well. When flowers die, cut them as close to the main stem as possible. To help prolong the blooms in flowers such as lilies, remove the pollen-coated parts of the stamen at the base. This will help the blossoms to last longer. Flower arranging is like cooking. There are guidelines that typically work, but in the end, you must rely on your own taste and preference for the best possible result. A great arrangement can add dimension and even serve as a focal point in your home.

Wash limescale down the drain and let the benefits pour in

e’ve all heard the saying, “You’re just pouring money down the drain.” Have you ever thought about its meaning? It means to waste money. None of us want to throw money away; but that’s exactly what you are doing if you have to let the water in your bathrooms and kitchen run and run to get hot water. You’re also losing money if just a trickle of water is coming out of the faucet, your water-using appliances seem to be wearing out faster than they should or you keep buying products to get the white spots off shower doors (and they don’t work). Additionally, water is our most precious resource, second only to the air we breathe, so wasting water is a big no-no. Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On, said that everyone in Hawaii has water that leaves calcium deposits and builds up limescale in their plumbing. Some areas are worse than others, and these deposits build up until the flow of water is impeded. Limescale and calcium deposits clog plumbing and the workings in your dishwasher, hot-water heaters and other water-using appliances — even your coffeemaker. This contributes to ultimately pouring hundreds of your hard-earned dollars down the drain every day, week, month and year.

>> After

According to Harold, “I used to experience these situations, and in looking for the solution, I learned about how the science of nanotechnology has made it possible to break up the calcium and limescale buildup inside the plumbing. We use a unit called HydroFlow. Our team of nanotechnology exper ts can install HydroFlow on the plumbing in your home, and you will get the same result as I first experienced — and still do.

>> Before

“The calcium and limescale buildup inside the plumbing will start to break up. Soon, spotting will reduce and be easy to wipe off. And the water won’t be trickling out of your shower heads and faucets. Instead, it will be flowing freely. You will no longer have to wait for hot water because your hot-water heater will be working more efficiently.” Nano Tek-On attaches the little HydroFlow unit to the outside of your plumbing with no cutting of pipes. Installation only takes a few minutes and then it goes to work to rid the pipes of corrosion and limescale. HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water, is environmentally safe and safe for you as well. How does HydroFlow work? It generates a radio frequency that causes mineral

ions in the water to naturally clump together and wash away — right down the drain. All the minerals in your home’s plumbing system are affected and as the “clumps” travel through the water, they attract ions from existing deposits and eventually break away from the sides of the pipes. The HydroFlow unit breaks down limescale from the inside of your plumbing so that it washes away down the drain, instead of your money washing away. The resulting benefits are that your water-using appliances will last longer without the corrosion caused by limescale and calcium deposits and you will save money on your water and electric bills. On average, the unit will lower your electric bill by 30 percent. To learn more about how you can pour limescale down the drain, call 395-2996 or visit nanotekhi.com. Nano Tek-On also specializes in environmentally friendly surface treatments including sealants for glass and natural stone, antimicrobial coatings and self-cleaning surfaces. The ‘One’ to trust for flooring installations BY KYLE GALDEIRA pon entering a home or business, one is sure to notice a beautiful flooring system whether in the form of plush carpet or stunning hardwood. What goes unseen, however, is what it took to achieve the blend of beauty and functionality through a professional, quality flooring installation. Certified Flooring Installers (CFI) at American Carpet One are poised to adequately handle every step of the job, from prepping the sub-floor to installing the desired flooring option. “Over 80 percent of manufacturer-related replacements are due to failures of the sub-floor and improper prepping of the new floor, said Larry Marvel, installation manager at American Carpet One. “Not the floor itself, but what was done incorrectly prior to installation. It’s the things you don’t see that end up becoming problematic.

Floor coverings include carpet and vinyl tile — anything that covers the floor above the substrate. Prior to a new flooring installation, the skilled installers at American Carpet One inspect underneath the previous floor covering to assess the condition of the substrate, and check for waves and ripples, holes and other imperfections that may cause warping and other costly problems if not corrected. CFIs ensure that any substrate conditions, including the presence of properly functioning carpet tack strips that are strong

enough and not rusted out, meet industry standards. Marvel explained that the experts at American Carpet One utilize scientific techniques such as a calcium chloride test, which is required by all hard-surface flooring manufacturers prior to installation. The 72-hour test tracks the vapor emissions that escape from the substrate over a 24-hour period. Too much vapor raises a red flag, and not addressing the conditions could lead to a new flooring system’s warranty being voided. With a host of CFI certified installers standing by to assist

the end goal of ensuring customers that the installers working on their projects are indeed qualified. All journeymen carpet installers at American Carpet One were recently certified by CFI — a first for the industry in Hawaii.

Easy tips for a lawn that makes the cut T he days are getting longer, the grass is growing and yard work season has begun. Many homeowners strive to have the best lawn in the neighborhood, but the task ahead can often feel daunting and time-consuming. Although yard work can be overwhelming at times, the steps to a great-looking lawn are easier than you think. To get started, here are a few tips for giving your yard that finished look:

• Keep grass approximately 2 inches in length and only take off 1/3 inch of new growth. • Alternate the direction you mow each session. If you mow in the same direction every time, the wheels will create a rut in the grass. • Plant flowers around the yard for a pop of color. Using mulch in flower beds will also add detail to your landscape. • Use string trimmers around trees, rocks, fences and other obstacles to give your lawn a polished look. • Use a broom to clean grass clippings and soil from pavement and walkways. Making your lawn stand out as the beauty of the block will take some work, but the end result will be worth the effort. Yard work can feel easier and even enjoyable when using the right lawn care tools for the job. Visit www.troybilt.com to learn more about lawn care products to help make time in the yard more pleasurable. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

8 MAY 12 • 2013 SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING

Save on energy bills with roof coatings W ith more than 20 years of experience in Hawaii’s roofing and solar industry, Surface Shield Roofing’s Shon Gregory has seen the business change as materials and technologies are adapted to the needs and priorities of property owners. “Our clients are becoming increasingly concerned with rising energy costs,” Gregory said. “Traditional technologies and materials are still in use, but we’re finding that more and more people are looking to advancements in roofing to help defray their costs.” Because of our state’s dependence on imported oil, energy costs in Hawaii are the highest in the U.S., and the need to reduce the price of cooling a home or business has led to innovations. “The market demands that we work with the latest materials and technologies,” said Gregory, “because our clients want to save on their energy costs over the long term.” “Cool roofing” is an approach that has a variety of cost and environmental benefits, and the number of home and business owners adopting it is growing rapidly.

Because such coatings are applied to existing roofing substrate, demolition that sends waste to a landfill is unnecessary. Buildings using cool roof materials and technologies can save up to 25 percent on energy costs. Roof coatings are seamless and when installed correctly, can solve roof leaks on almost any type of roof substrate. Fieldapplied reflective roof coatings can extend the useful life of most roof substrates, keeping the surface cool and providing a level of protection from the sun and weather. Roof coatings can add 25-plus years to the service life of a roof and reduce the amount of discarded roofing materials that end up in landfills. “Large commercial properties were the first to embrace cool-roofing technologies because of the size of their buildings,” explained Gregory. “But in the past years, we’ve seen a major spike in the number of residential property owners opting to go with roof coating technologies previously used mostly by the commercial sector.” Surface Shield uses a variety of roof coating products. Here are a few benefits of one of the highly efficient coatings

greatly reducing their life span.

• 95 percent solid silicone contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that will evaporate into the air.

• Silicone coatings will not support mold or mildew growth, nor will they blacken because of mold or mildew.

• Silicone coatings are the only non-sacrificial coatings available. Other coating systems will degrade with UV rays from the sun. Silicone does not degrade through exposure to UV rays.

• Silicone coatings are fast-drying. In tropical climates, silicone is dry enough to walk on in two hours. This means multiple coats can be applied in the same day. Work is completed sooner than with other coatings.

• Silicone coatings are capable of withstanding permanent ponding water with no effect on the product. Because of this, silicone coatings can be used to waterproof water fountains and man-made ponds. Ponding water will break down other coatings, making these soft and

Re-purposing garage sale castoffs into fabulous finds A s the warmer weather is upon us, it brings many new activities: baseball, picnics, beach time and — best of all — garage sales. People are purging what they don’t need or no longer want. It’s the perfect opportunity to turn their trash into your treasure. From outdated odds and ends to forgotten furniture, there is a wealth of worthy items just waiting to be found, re-imagined and re-purposed. Pretty in paint Rusty metal, chipped paint, colors from another decade — they are common sights for the garage sale shopper. But when you look beyond these imperfections — and at their spray paint potential — you’ll soon find some diamonds in the rough. Metal products, such as tables, chairs, garden tools or even watering cans, can receive an easy and instant update with Rust Protector spray paint from Krylon. The product, available in a variety of colors and finishes, dries in just eight minutes. As you create your new masterpieces, you won’t have to worry about grass, leaves or other particles getting stuck in your fresh coat of paint. Plus, the paint provides the ultimate protection against rust, keeping your new treasures looking amazing, regardless of the elements they face. If it’s color you desire, look no further than Krylon’s new ColorMaster spray paint with bold, bright or basic

Turning up treasures If your main reason for getting giddy over garage sales is to make a quick buck, you’re not alone. Valuable items could lurk at every turn, and they are just waiting to be snatched up by eager buyers. Before you head out to garage sales, however, do your research and read up on collectibles. Generally, pieces with high nostalgia will fetch a higher price tag. 10 MAY 12 • 2013 GOLDEN CABINETS & STONE

Kitchen cabinets can be an expression of your style BY KYLE GALDEIRA olden Cabinets & Stone offers its customers multiple elements of customization, which in turn allows clients’ creativity to run wild. Those building from scratch or remodeling an existing space have the choice of including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as the option to feature glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3-D computer rendering of what their project will look like upon completion. As pending home improvement projects command the attention of property owners, customers will be pleased to learn that later in May, Golden Cabinets & Stone will add 10 new granite and three quartz countertop varieties to its extensive inventory. Owner Wayne Cao explained that in the next few weeks, the fresh, new countertop styles will be available for those looking to build a kitchen or bathroom, or simply spruce up an existing space. Reservations for the new countertops are being accepted now to aid in the planning and design process. The company is also offering a huge sale during which customers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to 50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and countertops. Cao encouraged customers to stop in and check out Golden Cabinets & Stone’s new selection of porcelain tiles. Multiple varieties of the tile are available, and the covering resembles travertine — a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. “The porcelain tile really provides the look of natural stone, modeling travertine,” Cao explained. Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to local residents. Cao added that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “a wide range of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from cabinetry to hardware — including handles for an attractive yet functional touch. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional space, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. Golden Cabinets & Stone operates out of a convenient central location, and serves its customers that have come to appreciate the company’s professional service, quality products and “unbeatable” prices. Make exterior trim part of your home remodeling A s existing home sales continue to climb and housing prices increase, remodeling is also on the rise, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Replacing old or damaged exterior trim with engineered wood composite trim is one way homeowners can preserve design integrity, while remaining committed to green building principles. There are several options for replacing your existing trim. Traditional wood trim can split and swell, and is prone to knots and defects. Other materials, like PVC and fiber cement trim, have performance limitations and installation challenges. During extensive renovation of their 1830s Greek

Revival-style farm house in Clifton Park, N.Y., Paul and Joanne Coons used more than 1,000 linear feet of MiraTEC Treated Exterior Composite Trim. “We reviewed several trim options, but we liked MiraTEC because it is a wood composite that doesn’t contain oil or vinyl like PVC trim, and it is manufactured with less embodied energy than products like fiber cement, which also creates a lot of silica dust when it’s cut, said Paul Coons. Replacing your exterior trim is a great way to give your home a nice, clean new look. And, it can be done with the environment in mind. To learn more, visit www.miratectrim.com. Something to Believe In By gaining clarity on the differences between feng shui, religion and spirituality, we can understand how each might fit into our lives their approaches. Here are a few:

• Experience versus belief. Religion requires you to follow a particular belief system that the church (or place of worship) and its authorities have established. Spirituality places less importance on structured beliefs and focuses more on growing consciously and evolving to our highest level personally.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I enjoy your articles tremendously, but recently after bringing up the topic of feng shui with a group of friends at church, I got an earful. Their viewpoint was that feng shui is a religion, and it goes against what we believe. Is this true? Also, I have always been curious as to the difference between religion and spirituality and what makes a person spiritual, rather than religious?

he first par t of your question reflects a common concern for those with religious beliefs. The viewpoint that feng shui conflicts with religious beliefs suggests a lack of clarity about what feng shui actually is. Feng shui is not a religion — nor does it bring luck, or “black magic,” used to drive out evil spirits. It is not about worshipping deities or subscribing to superstitions. Feng shui is a body of wisdom centered on energy flow and how it affects us — a tool used to manage energy having no geographical, cultural, or religious boundaries. No matter what your religious beliefs or unique set of life goals are, you can use feng shui wisdom to better support yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

• Fear versus love. Although most religions state that God is loving and forgiving, they also teach the concept of sin and the consequences of wrongdoing; whereas, spirituality is entirely love-based, without the concept of sin or judgment.

T

• Various schools of feng shui. A part of the confusion with respect to religion comes from a school of feng shui known as “BTB feng shui,” which originated from the indigenous Bon religion of Tibet before the introduction of Buddhism. However, over thousands of years, as the body of wisdom traveled from India to Tibet and then to China, it evolved, losing its religious connection and incorporating indigenous teachings and philosophies. Its current teachings have nothing to do with Buddhism and everything to do with simply and effectively creating more comfortable and harmonious environments. No matter what school of classical or tra12 • MAY 12, 2013

• Heaven versus heart. Many Western religions refer to God as a supreme being in the heavenly realm, watching over us. In spirituality, God is considered omniscient, without gender, and found in all things animate and inanimate. Spirituality sees no separation between the “Creator” and “Creation.”

ditional feng shui you subscribe to, in its most basic form, feng shui uses no religious statues or lucky figurines in its teachings. • The marketing of feng shui. Feng shui is often marketed as something easy and fun, and “new age feng shui” uses Asian décor and symbolism, associating it with “Zen-like,” or peaceful, environments. In these manifestations, happy Buddhas, lucky gods, and divine deities, are used as a part of the trend, but without religious significance. • Religious figurines. Traditional churches are “against” feng shui because so-called deities are used and promoted as “good feng shui.” The truth is that you can be Christian and use feng shui, substituting a figurine of Jesus for the Buddha to provide “good energy” to the inhabitants of the home. Feng Shui never challenges, replaces, or in any way undermines a person's religious convictions or values and can align with your religious beliefs. • Religion versus spirituality. With regard to religion and spirituality, you can be religious without being spiritual and you can be

• Outer versus inner. Religion places more emphasis on outer forms and rituals and organized doctrines, while spirituality is less concerned with these things, focusing more on one’s inner experience of God and living a heart-centered existence.

spiritual without being religious. You can also be religious and spiritual, as they are not mutually exclusive. Religion and spirituality are just labels, representing different ways of focusing on God and what God means. Followers of religion and spirituality share a common belief in and desire to enter into a deeper relationship with a Higher Power of some kind, and both are seen as “paths to God,” with some distinct differences in

• It’s more than what you do. The bottom line is that being spiritual is not about what you do or who or what you believe in. Spirituality is a matter of your state of consciousness and your approach to life. By choosing to live with a greater connection to your spirit, you can be inspired by your own life and not necessarily by something outside of you.

GOing WITH THE FLOW More and more people are immersing themselves in aquaponics, intent on producing their own food through this sustainable farming practice. By Yushing Ting

T

hese days, you don’t need a farm or even a yard to grow some crops. With aquaponics — definied as the symbiotic cultivation of plants and aquatic animals in a circulating system — more and more people are becoming urban gardeners, growing their own food in just about any shape or size of space, including small apartments and condos. “Aquaponics is a merger of two kinds of technology — aquaculture and hydroponics. It’s basically soiless farming,” explained Clyde Tamaru, extension specialist at the UHManoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). “Right now there’s a big movement in aquaponics. A lot of people are jumping on board and a large part of it is that soil is not required. “There also are a lot of other benefits. There are no weeds, and because there’s no soil, you don’t get dirty. And you can grow pretty much anything — lettuce, tomato, cucumber, chili pepper, basil, green onion, taro, etc. And if you wanted to, you can do it from indoors, but it requires artificial lighting.” Depending on your budget

and space, a home aquaponic system can be very basic or super fancy. The main components needed are a fish tank, water pump, grow bed, growing medium, fish and plants. You can build one yourself or buy a ready-made unit that will be up and running right away. From the time your system is built, Tamaru said it takes about six weeks to start seeing crops from seeds, or four weeks with starter plants from lawn and garden shops. As for maintenance, there are live fish, so it’s like taking care of a pet. But it’s still considered to be much, much less work than maintaining a dirt garden. “A lot of people think building an aquaponic system is costly, but it’s about the same price as putting together a

fancy aquarium,” said Tamaru, noting that green onion, leafy greens and basil are the easiest to grow. As for types of fish, the best include tilapia, koi, fancy goldfish, carp and ornamental types such as angelfish, guppies and tetras. “Aquaponics is an emerging technology that I think we all need to take a really hard look at because on our island we have limitations of water and space, and this kind of technology is pretty much trying to adjust to those things. “Also, I think a reason for the big movement is people want to practice sustainability. This whole thing about the three Rs — reduce, recycle, reuse — that basically describes aquaponics. It’s becoming self-reliant by producing your own food.”

hen your dog or cat can sit and stay, it’s a good thing. When your pet’s stains sit and stay, however, it’s a bad thing. And we all know that with pets, accidents can happen. But keep your tail wagging, because you’re in luck — there’s a solution for both new and stubborn stains. UrineFree™ spray eradicates urine particles — not just covers them up — on a variety of surfaces such as carpet, wood and mattresses. Its bio-enzymes go to work permanently removing the stain by penetrat-

ere’s a bright idea: By using light-emitting diode lightbulbs (LEDs), you can save energy, money and more. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, LEDs have the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States with residential LEDs, especially ENERGY STARrated products, using at least 75 percent less energy and lasting 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. When compared to compact flourescent lightbulbs (CFLs), LEDs use about half of the electricity. “LEDs are more efficient, but they cost three to four times more than CFLs,” noted Frank Suster, facilities and safety manager at City Mill. “But LEDs are going to last longer and save you electricity because it uses less energy. So, in the beginning you're

ing and consuming the non-soluble uric acid crystals that hold the odor and stain. The UrineFree™ formula is designed for both homeowners and professionals to use in litter trays, kennels and furnishings indoor and out. The spray is available in ready-to-use sizes from travelsized to 1 gallon. Since it works using enzymes, it’s natural and safe for pets and your family. going to pay more, but then it turns around, just like solar.” Depending on the brand and type of LED bulb, some claim to last at least 25,000 hours and up to about 50,000 hours — at its full potential, that’s roughly up to 10 times more than a CFL bulb and up to 60 times longer than an incandescent lightbulb. Another benefit of LEDs is that there’s no mercury in them, making it easier to dispose of and generally safer and better for the environment. Also, for those hardto-reach light fixtures, the

longevity of LEDs comes in real handy. “It’s not like LEDs are going to take over the whole lighting industry right away because there’s still a lot of need for fluorescent lighting and the initial (higher) cost,” said Suster, noting that LEDs are superior for directional lighting such as a desklamp, while flourescents are great for lighting a wide area such as an entire room. “But I think over time, it’s going to take over the market.” — Yushing Ting

Greenest of the green: AT TR AC T P OT EN TIA L B UY ER S WIT H HOM E IM PR OV E M E NTS

orget wondering who's the fairest; when it comes to choosing home improvements that make your home look good — from the curb and to potential buyers — it may make more sense to ask “Who’s the greenest of them all?” Sustainable home improvements not only help reduce utility costs and boost owner satisfaction, they also make a house more appealing to potential buyers. In fact, buyers are willing to shell out up to 10 percent more for new homes certified green, according to a January real estate report by Harvard University. Return on investment for certain types of green improvements — such as replacing older, less efficient doors and windows — also tends to be high, meaning sellers recoup much of the initial cost of the improvement when they sell

the home. Here are two sustainable home improvements you can make: 1. Eliminate incandescents. You’ll have to do it soon anyway, so it may pay to start the process now and phase incandescent light bulbs from your home. A federal law banning incandescent light bulbs means that by the end of 2014, you probably won’t be able to find one of the old-fashioned power-guzzlers on store shelves anymore. Instead, more energy-efficient bulbs such as LEDs and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) will dominate the marketplace. 2. Switch to a solar water heater. Switching to solar power for heating water can be a huge energy and money-saver. Solar

hot water systems rely on free energy from the sun to heat a home’s hot water. A typical system can use 50 to 80 percent less energy than traditional heating systems, according to Velux America, marketers of solar-powered hot water systems. That reduction can help a typical household trim its annual energy costs by 10 to 15 percent. “While the initial cost of installing a solar-powered system is often higher than installing a traditional water heater, most homeowners find the energy savings allows them to recoup that cost in just a few years,” said Jim Cika of solar system manufacturer Heliodyne. “What’s more, homeowners may qualify for a federal tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost to buy and install a residential solar water heating system.”

What we put in our homes, we take from the world around us. And if we aren’t careful when buying a new dining room table or entertainment center, there is a good chance the earth’s natural order will be one tree weaker. Some furniture manufacturers can make a number of environmentally ruinous decisions in offering you a seat, so it’s important to be aware of the earth-friendly criteria surfacing locally and abroad. RECLAIM YOUR MATERIALS

SEE THE FOREST FOR ITS TREES The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organization that encourages economic, environmental and social responsibility in global forestry and tree farm practices. An FSC certification on a product such as lumber means it was produced

using environmentally sound methods. A piece of furniture that has been certified by the FSC ensures that an entire canopy’s ecosystem hasn’t been decimated.

If you feel that a couch with only three good legs has a foot out the door, consider this before sending it to the landfill: Junked furniture can be used to repair other furniture. You can donate your broken foundation to organizations such as Reuse Hawaii for deconstruction and reselling, ensuring that those busted components never see the sidewalk. And, being in the market for a replacement means you can take the added step of looking for furniture made out of reclaimed materials. This cyclical process gives Mother Nature some breathing space and keeps the sidewalks clear of your debris.

BAMBOO? SHOOTS!

KEEP YOUR GREENGUARD UP

Beware of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) — harmful chemicals that evaporate off of your furniture at room temperature in a process called offgassing. Chemicals in varnishes and stains can toxify your living space, and in areas with poor ventilation, these harmful toxins can build up and become harmful to your health. This is especially

Bamboo is nature’s hero. It’s a tough grass that can stand in as the protector of trees. Stronger than traditional lumber, concrete, graphite and even steel, bamboo has been put to use true for children and pets. SPLURGE ON QUALITY Buy furniture that’s durable. Even the greenest items use up natural resources and energy when recycled. Buying green, eco-friendly furniture may cost a bit more, but in the long run, it’s safer for the environment and more aligned to the kind of future we’d want for our children and their children. So be picky with your furniture, scrutinize each element and avoid overly complicated fabrications that are impossible to take apart (i.e., impossible to repair). a rising power in sustainability

Go solar and save. A

s a one-stop solar power operation, Sunetric plays an active role in lessening Hawaii’s dependence on foreign oil and other costly imported energy sources. The company is present through a customer’s initial photovoltaic system consultation and engages clients during the sales and design phases to following through with the installation and service processes. While the company was “born and raised in Hawaii,” Sunetric has expanded to the Mainland with offices in California, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania and Colorado. The growth allows the company to pour money back into the local economy as customers benefit from renewable solar power. “On average, a homeowner here in Hawaii is paying between $300 and $400 per month for their electricity right now,” explained Aaron Kirk, Sunetric’s Chief Operating Officer. “If you put solar on your home, the goal is to eliminate that electric bill.” Kirk said homeowners typically will finance their solar systems, and that the cost per month of that financing process can be structured to mimic or improve upon regular electric bill payments. Over an average three- to five-year span, the owner will pay off the solar system, and enjoy the resulting energy without the burdensome payments.

Green energy production reigns supreme Sunetric is approaching 50 megawatts of installed solar power over its nine-plus years of business, encompassing a wide range of jobs and projects. To put that figure in perspective, the solar power generated by Sunetric’s installations saves 78,437 pounds of carbon dioxide — the leading greenhouse gas — each year, and offsets the use of 83 barrels of oil annually. The company installs hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of solar panels every week, thereby eliminating a piece of the “carbon footprint” created by fossil fuels burned in Hawaii to make electricity. “Being environmentally friendly goes into everything we

do, such as having our installation crews track all scrap materials, taking the time to recycle whenever appropriate and choosing re-usable, ceramic dishes in our employee kitchen so as to not create waste with disposable coffee cups and plates,” Kirk said. “Additionally, Sunetric has installed a solar array on the building where our offices and warehouse reside, along with an electric vehicle charging station for our employees, customers or business neighbors.” Sunetric provides Hawaii residents with the opportunity to eliminate or reduce their electric bills while also initiating a longterm vision of sustainability for each project it installs.

Sunetric remains on cutting edge of solar industry Sunetric features an expert staff, including a fully licensed electrical engineer who custom designs each project ranging from a 6 kilowatt home installation to a 5 megawatt groundmounted solar farm. Additionally, the company utilizes special project managers, who are tasked with researching and testing the best PV-related equipment and materials on the market, to determine which products meet its high standards. According to Kirk, Sunetric has introduced much of the innova-

tive technology prevalent in the state today. It brought Enphase to Hawaii, for example, thus becoming the first company to install micro-inverter technology in the market. Sunetric is also the first company to utilize hybrid power optimization technology from Tigo, which helps mitigate PV production loss due to shading. Additionally, Sunetric introduced technologies of top-efficiency solar panel manufacturers SunPower and Suniva, and remains the state’s exclusive provider of Suniva panels.

Consign and Shine Before trashing damaged or old furniture, consider an alternative. Consignment stores offer a showroom setting and a chance to earn a return

y plan today was to continue with tips from the Waialua beach house I recently designed and furnished. But this past week I had an epiphany that I feel compelled to share with you. We’re so used to receiving furniture on consignment from people who are moving off-island, downsizing, looking for a way to retire their parents’ things or simply redecorating. At Cathy’s Marketplace, more than a dozen amazing pieces came in last week. But among our customers was one who looked around and said, “How do I know what to do with stuff that I no longer want?”

M

What do you do with old, unwanted furniture? Obviously if you’re moving, you need to get rid of your things, and get rid of them fast. The paper’s classified section, craigslist, CathysMarketplace.com and other websites are an option, but if you don’t want strangers coming to your home, what do you do? You could donate, but a lot of charities these days don’t take large, bulky items because they don’t have the space for them and they’re difficult to unload. That’s where consignment comes in. You immediately get something out of your space. And pieces show better displayed in professional settings than they do online or at a garage sale. The negative is you won’t see any money until your piece sells, and that could take a little while. And the more time that goes by, the more your piece is likely to get discounted, because it costs money for a showroom to store your things. Believe it or not, I’ve also talked people into keeping their pieces. Some complain about the old-fashioned look of their parents’ furniture, but sometimes all it takes is a fresh coat of paint, new fabric or new drawer pulls to breathe in new life.

We don’t want to clutter our landfills, so try looking at all options — selling a piece yourself, consigning or simply updating it— before you end up tossing it. So at the showroom last week, we took our customer through the steps and gave some advice. Be realistic about what you have. A quality older piece of furniture that has a stain or a tear can still be of value. But an inexpensive piece with a stain or tear is just an old piece of furniture. Just like selling a home, if you put a little bit

of elbow grease or attention into a piece, it’ll likely help it sell faster. How to tell if something is worth consigning Recently we got a vintage McGuire dining set that’s in great condition, but needs updated upholstery. We got some great case pieces by Herman Miller, an iconic furniture maker who’s still in demand today, but they need some TLC. If they were in mint condition, they would be triple the price. We also got a 15-foot cream-colored

sectional sofa that’s in perfect condition. But there’s not a huge market for people looking for such a large piece. All of these are great and will probably find a good home, but it’s going to take that right buyer. Our customer chose to consign, so we reviewed the photos she sent, decided what we would take and gave her advice on what to do with her other pieces. So keep in mind: If you need to a solution for your old furniture, you might want to update and keep a few choice pieces, and find a new home for the rest so that your home can shine.

A home transformed The goal was to maintain many of the architectural highlights of this original 1937 Claude Albon Stiehl designed home while transforming a 75 year old 2,000 square foot structure into a completely retrofitted 3,000 square foot home to last another century. New elements to match the original style included banded horizontal exterior wall details, whitewash exterior, expansive use of window glazing, which not only created focal highlights of downtown Honolulu and Diamond Head, but also specifically targeted passive ventilation continuity with awning windows strategically placed under the extra deep roof overhangs. An extensive deconstructive demolition process, photo voltaic, solar hot water systems and high efficiency double glazed window units incorporated sustainability. The central space of the house now functions as the heart of the home with 16-foot wide pocketing glass doors that open to a deck overlooking downtown Honolulu on one side and the private residential courtyard on the other, a transformation that honors timeless design.

Water-conserving practices to live by H

ome is the place a person can always escape for rest and relaxation. But why not upgrade your home to be a place that also helps you conserve water and be a better environmental steward? Technology has come a long way in improving performance and efficiency in household fixtures, especially when it comes to water usage. There are many ways you can update your home's water-using fixtures — without sacrificing quality, comfort or design:

• Choose brands you trust. If you are planning to replace a number of fixtures in your home, look to a manufacturer that is committed to water conservation and innovation. For nearly 100 years,TOTO has innovated to make people's lives better and protect the environment, as embodied in its PeoplePlanetWater philosophy.TOTO's beautiful, innovative designs perform flawlessly while respecting the plant and honoring our water supply. • Replace your toilet with an ultra-high-efficiency model. Older toilet models can consume up to 27 percent of a household's daily water usage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. When replacing a toilet, look to install products made from high-quality materials that have a low impact on the environment. TOTO's dual flush NEOREST 550H consumes only one gallon of water for the full flush, and a modest 0.8 gallons for the light flush. In addition, the NEOREST 550H uses electrolyzed water, which has a slightly acidic pH value to kill bacteria and clean the bowl helping homeowners reduce their use of harsh cleaning products. • Make easy enhancements. Replacing a showerhead is a relatively effortless upgrade, Before

s Lese y n Mo but can certainly help reduce the amount of water used each week in your household. Showers are traditionally the third largest water-consuming appliance in the household. Look for a replacement showerhead that boasts the WaterSense label, as these products are at least 20 percent more water-efficient. Encourage your family to shower in under 10 minutes to further reduce the amount of water you use. • See improvements with a low flow faucet. Installing a low flow faucet into your bathroom can not only help you decrease your water usage, but also add style as well. The Wyeth Single Handle High-Efficiency Faucet is WaterSense certified and has a flow rate of a mere 1.5 gallons per minute. Just be sure to shut the water off when not in use, for example, while brushing your teeth. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Prepare your home before a storm sets in H urricanes are one of nature’s most powerful forces and pose the greatest threat to life and property in Hawaii. As we have experienced in the past, the Hawaiian Islands are not safe from the destruction and harm caused by these deadly storms. Our tropical waters and warm, moist atmosphere are a lethal recipe for disastrous hurricanes. In fact, the chances of a hurricane hitting Hawaii are rapidly increasing as the ocean temperature escalates because of global warming. Unfortunately, even with technological advances, there is no way of knowing when a hurricane will hit and how much damage it will cause.

houses and apartments statewide, and 30 percent on Kauai alone, were affected or destroyed. The future of hurricanes in Hawaii According to Oahu Civil Defense, based on past experience, if a storm as strong as Iwa strikes any of the Islands: • 12 percent of homes and apartments could be destroyed • 38 percent of homes and apartments could be heavily damaged • An additional 40 percent will probably have minor damage Increased since 2007, Hawaii is now designated as a 105 mph wind zone, which is equivalent to a “Category 2â€? hurricane. There are plans to increase this figure. A combination of the increased wind zone and the dangers posed by hurricanes has prompted the Hawaii State Building Commission to adopt new building codes. These codes require high-performance windows and doors that can resist hurricaneforce winds and the impact of flying debris.

The history of hurricanes in Hawaii In 1992, Hawaii was hit with the most devastating hurricane it had ever experienced, Hurricane Iniki. An estimated 130 mph winds hit the coast of Kauai, causing nearly $3 billion in damage. More than 14,000 homes and apartments were damaged or destroyed and six deaths were recorded. A decade earlier, Hurricane Iwa caused $250 million in damage. More than 7,426

Garden splendor without weeding I t’s possible to have both a glorious well-maintained garden and time for fun in the sun by taking some smar t gardening steps now. • A hot, dry, exposed setting is brutal on most plant selections. To alter the heat-and-light dynamic, introduce a small shade tree to serve as the anchor of a new easy-care landscape bed. Add a suppor ting cast of drought-tolerant shrubs and perennials. • Covering garden beds with a 3inch layer of mulch will greatly reduce the need to weed and water, while making everything look tidy, too. Top off mulch with a sprinkling of a pre-emergent such as Preen to

stop weed seeds from growing in mulch and garden soil for up to three or four months. For a onestep solution that creates a six month weed-fighting barrier, tr y Preen Mulch Plus, a natural shredded-wood mulch with added preemergent weed preventers already mixed in. • Sharply-defined edges around garden beds add visual appeal to any property. Dig a shallow 8-inch wide trench surrounding garden beds, then cover it with 3 inches of mulch; or install a barrier-style perimeter edging of metal, stone, rubber or wood. AMERICAN ELECTRIC MAY 12 • 2013 19

It’s time to reap the benefits of solar ow is the perfect time to invest in a solar PV system. Prices are at an all-time low, with today’s more efficient, compact systems costing half as much as comparable installations five years ago. Add generous tax incentives that cover up to 65 percent of the total cost, and the payback on most systems is less than four years. With leasing options like those offered by American Electric, you can even enjoy the benefits of solar without the hassle of tax credits for $0 down. So why not wait for prices to drop further? That would be risky for several reasons. First, there is saturation: a limit on the amount of total PV systems that can be placed on any particular circuit. On Maui, where many neighborhoods have reached this limit, the electric company requires a non-refundable $3,000 fee to determine the eligibility of each installation. It’s only a matter of time before circuits become saturated on Oahu as well. Second, there is not much room for material costs to go down. Panels are being sold for close to their manufactured cost. Many experts feel the cost will actually increase over the next couple years

20 MAY 12 • 2013 INTERIOR DESIGN & CUSTOM CABINETS

Customizing your home design By MICHELLE LEE hen it comes to designing the perfect kitchen and bathroom, accountability and efficiency are paramount. Interior Design & Custom Cabinets offers an array of services uniquely tailored to provide every home with a personalized finish. In addition to custombuilt cabinets, the company also provides fabrication and installation services for countertops, tile and flooring. As a business with local roots, Interior Design & Custom Cabinets recognizes the value of supporting Hawaii-manufactured materials. “Everything we use is built on this beautiful island,” said Duncan Graham, manager of Interior Design & Custom Cabinets. “It allows for quality control and helps keep prices reasonable.” To initiate a project, the process is simple. Customers are invited to call and arrange an estimate in which a team of qualified engineers will take measurements. Designers will then work with the homeowner to create a blueprint and select materials, styles and finishes. Once Interior Design & Custom Cabinets has confirmed the necessary details, the team will assist in obtaining any

W

required building permits as well as perform the installation if needed. “We can work with any contractor or be our own,” said Graham. “Regardless of what stage the customer is at, we are capable of doing the job from start to finish.” Since opening last fall, Interior Design &

Custom Cabinets has succeeded in rising above the competition in part because of its dedication to quality materials. “These days, a lot of companies get their products from questionable sources,” said Graham. “One homeowner I encountered tried to wipe a pen mark off her cabinet she had

INTERIOR DESIGN & CUSTOM CABINETS contact // 841-8716 address // 819 Moowaa St., Ste. 106 web // www.interiordesigncc.com

just installed with another company, but she ended up peeling off the finish as well.” To prevent against such situations, Interior Design & Custom Cabinets uses a 3/4-inch plywood with a furniture-grade paint finish designed to handle wear and tear in addition to looking nice. “We offer a cost-effective alternative to poorly made cabinets,” said Graham. Interior Design & Custom Cabinets is able to work with any budget and spatial limitations. “At the end of the day, we are here to satisfy the customer,” said Graham. “We guarantee high-quality service and results at a reasonable price.” Rather than having to fit a standard size, designers possess the leeway to customize the cabinets down to the exact inch the customer needs them to be. Furthermore, whereas most companies cannot accommodate last-minute changes to an order, Interior Design & Custom Cabinets is able to facilitate any alterations. “Since we are on the island and manufacture everything right here in our shop, we are flexible and can fit anyone’s needs,” explained Graham. For more information or to arrange an estimate, call Interior Design & Custom Cabinets at 841-8716 or visit www.interi ordesigncc.com.

Couples who design a fresh space together, stay together O pposites attract, and for couples who live together, compromising on personal style and design choices can be a difficult bridge to cross. Someone who wants a modern, contemporary vibe might not like the decor choice of someone who prefers a more traditional or rustic feel. What most people don’t realize, however, is that blending two opposing tastes can actually be more visually appealing than sticking with just one design style.

Paint is prime Adding a splash of color (or two, or three) is a low-cost way to liven up the blank canvas of your home. And you don’t have to stick with just one color throughout your home. Highlight an accent wall in your living room with a darker shade or apply a funky wallpaper print. Or, paint your kitchen red with shades like Crisp Crimson or Rocket Red from Dutch Boy, as it increases appetite and elevates passion, perfect for a romantic dinner for two. Purples such as Plumes or Merlot Grape, also from Dutch Boy, have been known to induce passion, ideal choices for a couple’s bedroom. Art and soul Bringing artistic elements into the space is an easy way to add personal flair. From wall decor and blown glass accents to picture frames and candles, no decorative piece is too small to make a big impact. Display items in groups of three for a dramatic display. Candleholders or vases in varying heights or complementary color schemes can marry two styles easily, and pairing a gothic frame with a softer, lace-applique can actually bring great dimension to an overlooked nook of the home. The perfect mix Don’t be afraid to mix various textures and patterns. This will add dimension to the space, transforming a flat and otherwise boring look into a world of wonderment. First,

pick a main color you want to focus on, which will be the anchor color for the space. Let’s say you choose blue for this role. Lay all blue fabrics on the floor — window treatments, rugs, pillows and blankets. You’ll immediately notice some that seem out of place. Remove these from the pile and you’ll begin to notice an interesting cohesion among the remaining fabrics. Next, you’ll want to incorporate a complementary color. If blue is your anchor color, add hints of orange to the mix for a playful pop.

Taking the time to blend your and your mate’s style preferences can be a rewarding experience. Throughout the process, you’ll learn his or her likes and dislikes while having fun in the process, creating a stronger, more unified couple. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint. —GO SOLAR WITH —

They have since expanded the stone line to include all manner of stone garden and pond products. Big Rock was the first place here to offer homeowners a way to easily and inexpensively create their own ponds and waterfalls for home gardens without digging a hole for the pond. The above-ground pond trend was not intentional at the time, but rather a necessity, as Big Rock needed to find a way to display its ideas for ponds using the concrete showroom parking lot areas it inhabited. The owners decided to build up (rather than dig down) using concrete blocks to make the shape of the ponds. To make waterfalls, the duo simply used some of the many light-

weight boulders they had cast, and it worked like a charm. All customers needed to do if they wanted to make their own pond was to go home, lay out a shape on the ground using a rope or hose, measure the circumference, length and width and bring that back to Big Rock. Bonnie or Brian would then calculate what was needed, and from these simple three dimensions, ponds started springing up in yards across the Islands. The average pond —5 by 8 feet — only takes a weekend to construct and is a wonderful, fun family affair. All you need is a CMU block, a heavy-duty rubber liner, some moss rock veneer to cover the cement block, a submersible pump and a waterfall boulder. Add a few affordable tiki torches and you have tropical tranquility in the garden. Big Rock sells all the gear you need: liners, pumps, underwater lighting, filters, foggers to add the misty look and, of course,

BIG ROCK contact // 834-7625 address // 1050 Kikowaena Place web // www.bigrockhawaii.com the cast stone to make it look natural. Add a few moss rock stepping stones leading up to the pond and you are done. Above-ground ponds have many advantages: grass clippings from mowing the lawn don’t fly into the pond, and you have a little area to sit and watch the fish. You can add small fish and a few water plants for a clear, healthy and naturally well-balanced pond. There’s no chance of mosquitos, either, because the fish take care of that. Ponds are a wonderful addition to any home, and

if you are ready to do the work yourself, they do not cost much. Something small with a nice waterfall makes all the difference in the world and adds life and music to your garden area. Drop by the showroom in Mapunapuna. You will see two ponds and many other displays for garden water features, such as water-boulders, Japanese garden bowls and many pre-cast waterfalls. There’s a map online if you are unfamiliar with the area, just search Big Rock or call 834-7625.

The cost-effective way to a safe, comfortable bathroom R emember that hard day of work when you were stuck in traffic and the stress of the day weighed heavily on your mind? Wasn’t the thought of coming home and taking a shower or bath comforting? The bathroom can be one of the most comforting rooms in your house. Nothing can make you feel more comfortable than relaxing in a newly remodeled bathroom. The bathroom can also be one of the most dangerous places in the house. There are more than 200,000 accidents in the United States that are bathroom-related every year, according to reports. That’s about 70 percent of all home accidents. With more than two decades of experience, All Island Bath Remodeling LLC has perfected a unique combination of services. These solutions cost a fraction of the price of traditional remodeling and could turn your bathroom into a comfortable and safe haven. Resurfacing your worn or stained tub or wall-surround to look like new in any color is a cost-effective way to add life to your bathroom. The company has artists who can simulate granite on countertops or wall-surrounds, renewing your bathroom surfaces. Converting your existing tub to a walk-through shower, making it safer and more comfortable for seniors, can prevent a potential accident and make life easier for anyone who has difficulty stepping over the tub skirt. The company also has a low-cost alternative that utilizes your existing tub and cuts the skirt to lower the step-over height. Tub liners, which fit a new tub over your old, rusty or hard-to-clean tub or wall, will transform your bath with simulated granite or marble, creating a remodeled look without the mess usually associated with a complete demo. They also save you money. All Island Bath has ways of saving you money on traditional remodels without sacrificing quality. The company has developed new, unique methods: • Low-cost “tub cut-outs” utilize your existing tub to make the step-over height about 8 inches lower than that of your existing tub. • Complete conversions change your tub to a shower. • Grab bars and safety accessories make life easier for seniors.

GRAHAM BUILDERS contact // 593-2808 web // www.grahambuilders.com

Get the facts before starting a home construction project F or most homeowners, building a new house or taking on major renovations on an existing home can be daunting. Many find themselves asking questions such as how much will it cost? What design will best accommodate my family’s needs? And most importantly, which company can I trust to walk me through the entire process from start to finish? Fortunately for homeowners, Graham Builders, Hawaii’s premier design+build company, can provide those answers. With more than 20 years of experience, the locally owned company has helped families bring their dream homes to reality. Here’s what two recent clients have to say about their experience with Graham Builders: We wanted to build out from our current house, but had no clue how to do it. We ended up going to Graham Builder's free informational seminar where they walked us through the whole process. The presentation was very professional and very easy to understand. The best part? We never felt any sales pressure. — Eric I., Hawaii Kai 24 • MAY 12, 2013

Another customer noted:

After checking out a number of design+build contractors, I decided to go with Graham Builders after attending one of their great informational seminars, and I'm glad I did! They were professional, knowledgeable,

easy to work with, had great design ideas, addressed all of my concerns and built a house for me that I am proud of and get many compliments on. — Diane I., Moiliili

Since 1995, Graham Builders has educated more than 5,000 homeowners on the step-by-step process of homebuilding and renovation through its monthly “Building Your Home for Life” seminar. A leader in the industry, Graham Builders was the first design and construction firm in the state to offer free educational seminars to the public. “Our ultimate goal with the seminars is to inform and educate homeowners of what is involved with new builds and remodeling projects and why they should choose professionals with a proven track record,“ said Evan Fujimoto, Graham Builders president. “We’ve accomplished that goal if homeowners leave feeling empowered with knowledge to make informed decisions about their home projects.” Seminar attendees learn: • Where to start • How to select a builder • What to watch out for • What one needs to know about residential design • Tips for setting a budget • Tips for estimating • Tips for financing • Tips for scheduling

The two-hour seminar is the most comprehensive, as Graham Builders also covers topics that are important to local families such as multigenerational living and sustainable building. Graham Builders has the distinction of being the first builder ever to win the prestigious Better Business Bureau of Hawaii Torch Award for ethics in small business in 2007. To learn about the latest trends in design and renovation, multigenerational living and sustainable building, attend Graham Builders’ “Building Your Home for Life” seminar on Wednesday, May 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Honolulu Country Club. Seminars are free, but reservations are required. Visit www.grahambuilders.com or call 593-2808. AN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT PUBLISHED BY OAHU PUBLICATIONS, INC. | ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
