our roof is probably one of the last things on your mind as you lie in bed looking up at the ceiling. But wait, why does that part of the ceiling look a little different? Kind of dark, wet looking? Touch it and it feels a little moist to the touch and a bit mushy? It’s possible that your roof is leaking. Take a walk in your yard the next morning. Are there pieces of shingles in the yard? Are there shingles missing on your roof? Does the roof itself look warped, or buckling in some areas? When was the last time you cleaned your gutters? What about those troublesome pests? Every day while you’re at work, and every night while you lie sleeping, they are chewing away at the structure of your roof, the very supporting beams

Other times, more substantial changes are needed. Determining those changes can be a challenge, but looking at the potential return on investment is a great way to prioritize. Concrete floors sparkle with diamond polishing reflect our unique personality with quality and beauty. We already have concrete under our carpet, tile or wood, or in the case of new construction, we plan to pour it. Why not have it be our finished flooring material instead of covering up its beautiful character? Why hide it beneath the common materials when you can proudly display your concrete and enjoy it? Traditional flooring materials such as carpet, linoleum and wood are usually placed over a concrete base. Several times over the lifetime of a structure, these materials wear out and must be replaced, and the expense can be significant over the lifetime of a building. Both removal and replacement have their own set environmental impacts as well. The flooring material removed has to be sent to the landfill, and the replacement material must be manufactured and shipped from its origin to the point of installation. And as we all know, we have precious little landfill space left in the Islands, and every step in manufacturing and transportation of flooring materials adds to the greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere. 2012 homes to mix old and new designs

T

oday’s consumer mindset is steeped in common sense and careful decisions. When making a purchase, individuals aren’t looking to accumulate “stuff.” They’re looking to buy an experience. That experiential purchasing behavior is especially true when it comes to selecting items for the home. Current home decorating is not about flashy, over-the-top design; rather, it’s about decorating for real life — a home that’s smaller, more wellequipped and custom-made for its owners’ lifestyles. “Homeowners are getting back to basics,” says Rebecca Kolls, senior director, consumer strategist of home and garden for Iconoculture, a leading consumer trends advisory firm

which presented at Moen Incorporated’s INSPIRE Design Seminar. “They are putting roots down and investing in items to increase their quality of life.” How are homeowners making their spaces more practical and livable for the long term? What exactly are the hot trends for 2012? Kolls points to several distinct ideas, including practicality, rightsizing, styletelling and universal design.

Practical and perfectly sized homes Today’s average new home is smaller than those from recent years at 2,135square-feet. It emphasizes inviting, livable spaces, and downplays the formal, untouched rooms of yesterday. Despite a decrease in

overall square footage, kitchens are growing, homeowners are adding more porches, ditching the conventional living room

concept and embracing fewer — yet larger — rooms. To fill those rooms, homeowners are looking

for products that provide function, as well as fashion. They are no longer buying for the sake of buying. “The first question consumers

are asking is, ‘Do I need this or do I want this?’” says Kolls. They’re looking for more practical solutions for everyday life, like items

2012 homes forecast that promote health and overall well-being, versus over-the-top indulgences. Instead of one purely decorative element, homeowners are springing for more affordable luxuries with experiential benefits. In the bedroom, these purchases include new mattresses for increased comfort and a better night’s sleep, plus items like improved lighting and window coverings that facilitate a gentle transition from sleeping to waking. Bathroom remodels include items like towel warmers, steam showers and multiple body spray outlets that promote relaxation and spa-like indulgence. Moen Flushmount Body Sprays are especially appealing to the remodeling consumer looking for added wellness benefits: Each body spray is equipped with an adjustable spray face, allowing the user to position the water sprays exactly where he or she desires by pivoting up to 20 degrees in any direction, for the ultimate in customized relaxation and rejuvenation. dinnerware; putting vintage photos into new stainless Gone are the days of per- steel frames; storing K-cup fectly matched rooms and coffee pods in antique cofpristine homes. just that. In the bath, boomers are incorporating ADA-compliant products, like new Weymouth leverhandle faucets and custom showering options from Moen. The Weymouth collection brings elaborate, traditional styling to the bath, plus reliable, nearly effortless operation for individuals of all ages and abilities. In addition to more accessible everyday items, homes with several generations under one roof are also utilizing technology to help keep all members of the family safe and well. In fact, according to Kolls, wireless home health monitoring technologies are expected to grow by $4.4 billion by the year 2013.

Smart mirrors that can monitor day-to-day health, including changes in appearance, plus alerts that report whether an aging parent has commenced his or her daily routine, are just a couple of examples of how technology is bringing additional security and flexibility to the lives of caregivers. Today’s home may have a smaller footprint, but it is much more personal and memorable than houses of the past. Families are spending more time in the home and incorporating multiple generations under one roof, which makes for richer design — and even richer experiences — than ever before.

Here’s your window T

of opportunity

his year, Custom Contractors Inc. (CCI) celebrates its 26th year in the Hawaii window market. CCI has sold an impressive 220,000 windows to more than 15,000 customers during that time period. “You have to adapt to the times,” noted owner Luis Larcina. “As our customers’ needs change, we want to be there for them. A lot of our customers want to transition away from jalousie windows. They are extremely hard to clean, let in dust, dirt and noise, and do not let your AC run efficiently. Most importantly, the jalousie window accounts for over 85 percent of entry points during burglaries.” The aluminum awning window is CCI’s biggest seller. The manufacturer, Victor Sun Control, has been making this style of window for more than 53 years and converted several of its components to deal with Hawaii’s harsh salt atmosphere.

CUSTOM CONTRACTORS ADDRESS: 99-840 IWAIWA ST., #2 CONTACT: 483-0100

“It’s been a great product for Hawaii right from the beginning,” said Larcina. “It addressed all of the jalousie shortcomings, they’re easy to clean, seal tight, meet building codes and feature Torque Bar activated cam lock security. As Victor Sun Control’s largest customer nationwide, we have a lot of say as to how the product is made, and the quality shows.” CCI offers endless glass options for its windows ranging from simple tint (reduce glare), obscure (privacy), laminated or tempered (for safety and security), to Low-e (for ultraviolet reduction). A close second in CCI’s inventory of replacement and new construction windows is its vinyl line, PLYGEM (formerly

CertainTeed), one of the country’s oldest and largest manufacturers of this kind of window. Among the various architectural shapes offered are single and double sliders, single and double hunts, casements and sliding doors. While all of the options may seem overwhelming and confusing to the average homeowner, this is where CCI’s experience and expertise come to the forefront. Twenty-year veteran and head estimator at CCI, Robert Abbett, better known as Rabbett, perhaps says it best: “When I go into a home, I find some of our customers know what they want, most are open to practical ideas and applications. We sit down and examine the home’s unique variables including trade wind direction, path of the sun, privacy and security issues and aesthetics,” he explained. “We then choose a window and glass type to meet that need. I’ll supply

I

them with a computergenerated drawing and individual pricing for their windows.” Another thing that makes CCI atypical in the home improvement world is its low-key sales approach. “We have great products, prices and experience,” says Abbett. “We won’t use gimmicks like ‘sign tonight and we’ll give you 20 percent off’ or ‘we’re going to make your home the neighborhood model if you sign tonight.’ Companies that use these practices know that if they walk out the door without a contract, they’ve lost your business. We actually encourage our cus-

tomers to get other quotes; in the end, they feel better about us.” In addition to Abbett’s 20 years at CCI, lead installer Larry Fischer also has been with the company for 20 years. Office manager Cheryl Wilson has been with CCI for 15 years, and shop manager John O’Donnell for 10 years. This type of departmental leadership allows CCI to smoothly transition a large quantity of jobs — typically 80 to 100 at any given time. That volume allows CCI to ship full containers of windows at a time, saving customers from $30 to $40 per win-

dow on average, and eliminating the damage that occurs when shipping in common containers or air freight. While CCI’s core value is home replacement windows, it also has extensive commercial and high-rise experience in Hawaii. The company specializes in lanai enclosures (Kahala Towers and Kapiolani Bel Aire to cite two condominiums) and builds its own bay windows. With an estimated 20 million jalousies still out there waiting to be retired, CCI will be around for a long time. For more information, call 483-0100.

hether you are remodeling or building new, incorporating craftsmanlike hardwood cabinetry and high-quality granite countertops in your kitchen design is the first step toward creating that “dream kitchen.” At the C&C Cabinets Granite showroom, maple and cherrywood cabinets are on display. The cabinets are precision designed and include high-quality handles, pulls and runners. No particle boards or other synthetic materials are used in the fabrication of the cabinet doors, shelves and drawers. However, customers who wish to display their glassware or dinnerware can order cabinet doors with glass insets. Stop by the C&C Cabinets Granite showroom at 500 Alakawa St. (located behind the Costco gas station) where you will be able to see exactly what the various styles and finishes will look like in your home. You can mix and match to achieve the per-

fect combination to suit your decor and fit your lifestyle. Sales personnel with design experience will be able to guide you in your choices and even create a kitchen layout on the computer, so bring along your ideas and photos. Because these are highquality products, people assume they have to be expensive. At C&C

Cabinets Granite, however, this is not the case. The company’s pricing is competitive, even for customized cabinets and countertops. On-site estimates for cabinets, installation and interior remodeling are free. C&C Cabinets Granite is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The showroom is closed on Sunday.
