A Window of Opportunity T

his year, Custom Contractors Inc. (CCI) celebrates its 25th year in the Hawaii window market. CCI has sold an impressive 200,000

widows to more than 15,000 customers during that time period. “You have to adapt to the times,” noted owner Luis Larcina. “As our customers’ needs change, we want to be there for them. A lot of our customers want to transition away from jalousie windows. They are extremely hard to clean, let in dust, dirt and noise, and do not let your AC run efficiently. Most importantly, the jalousie window accounts for over 85 percent of entry points during burglaries.” The aluminum-awning window has been CCI’s biggest seller to date. The manufacturer, Victor Sun Control, has been making this style of window for more than 53 years and converted several of its components to deal with Hawaii’s harsh salt atmosphere. “It’s been a great product for Hawaii right from the beginning,” said Larcina. “It addressed

A close second in CCI’s inventory of replacement and new con-

struction windows is its vinyl line, PLYGEM (formerly CertainTeed), one of the country’s oldest and largest manufacturers of this kind of window. Among the various architectural shapes offered are single and double sliders, single and double hung, casements and sliding doors. While all of the options may seem overwhelming and confusing to the average homeowner, this is where CCI’s experience and expertise comes to the forefront. “When I go into a home, I find some of our customers know what they want, most are open to practical ideas and applications,” said CCI head estimator Robert Abbett. “We sit down and examine the homes unique variables

including trade wind direction, path of the sun, privacy and security issues and aesthetics,” he explained. “We then choose a window and glass type to meet that need.” While CCI’s core value is home replacement windows, it also has extensive commercial and high-rise experience in Hawaii. The company specializes in Lanai enclosures (Kahala Towers and Kapiolani Bel Aire to site two condominiums) and builds its own bay windows.

Paving the way to a brighter future W

alker-Moody Construction is a specialist in asphalt maintenance. In 2000, the company was asked to restore and sealcoat asphalt as part of a project and, things turned out so well that Lyle

Moody decided that asphalt maintenance would provide a steady flow of work for the company. After testing different products, the company chose MasterSeal — a product of SealMaster.

New equipment was purchased to perfect the process, and the company has since focused on repairs and sealcoating. Today, Walker-Moody Construction serves as an authorized installer of SealMaster Hawaii. The heart of an effective pavement maintenance program includes periodic sealcoating with an asphalt-based emulsion pavement sealer. Left untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. It is made up of asphalt binder and rock. Almost immediately after

paving, the asphalt binder combines with oxygen and becomes brittle or oxidized, leading to cracking and weathering soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt, causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement. Sealcoating protects against oxidation. An unsealed pavement allows water to penetrate the pavement structure,

leading to base erosion and ultimately pavement failure. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier to stop water penetration. But if left unsealed, oil and gasoline will soften and deteriorate the exposed asphalt binder. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier that resists attack from oil and gasoline. Arming your home with premium siding H

ome siding in Hawaii has always been an area of high maintenance and high frustration. Sun, rain, humidity and salt are constantly bombarding homes, breaking down painted wood, as well as vinyl and aluminum siding. But thanks to modern technology, a new line of products has been developed that looks great and is guaranteed to stay that way. Windows Hawaii is proud to distribute and install premium siding products, and this summer is offering homeowners a special discount on its Craneboard products. Craneboard’s revolutionary, lifetime-warranted products can update the look of your home and eliminate the need to paint your home in the future. Craneboard is a high-

WINDOWS HAWAII

CONTACT: 671-0808 / www.windows-hawaii.com tech acrylic product that looks and feels like wood. These products come in a variety of styles and colors and, best of all, never need to be painted.

However, don’t confuse Craneboard with the vinyl siding that you may have seen in the past 10 or 20 years. Craneboard is an architecturally designed product line that can cover walls, eaves and overhangs, as well as trim and fascia boards. Most importantly, it won’t fade or chalk like vinyl. Craneboard has included several unique features

to increase the value and performance of the product. For one thing, insulated backing helps keep your home cool; for another, patented solid backing also includes Performguard to repel termites and ants.

Also, revolutionary SmartTrack technology, one of the product’s greatest benefits, allows your home to breathe so that moisture vapor doesn’t get trapped in the walls and cause mold or dry rot.

you make a mistake, just remove the plank and reapply. You can continue moving the planks into different positions until the adhesive starts to set. Armstrong’s luxury vinyl floors are made to last, and its vinyl tiles are

easy to maintain and can be installed in any room, including bathrooms. Both Luxe Plank and Alterna are made up of three primary layers. The top layer is a protective wear layer that provides resistance to stains,

scratches and scuffs. This wear layer is combined with a clear film layer that adds more durability and helps protect the luxury vinyl floor against rips, tears and gouges. The second layer is the printed design layer that offer

realistic ceramic, stone or wood visuals. The bottom layer is the tile backing, which adds structural strength and durability. Find Armstrong Luxe and Alterna at one of four Wayne’s Flooring locations.

beating batter by hand. Here are some new trends and technologies to watch: Removable wallpaper While wallpaper has been gracing American kitchens for generations, those who have shied away from using it there have had good reasons. Applying wallpaper to an entire kitchen wall is a big design commitment. The labor of cutting around cabinets, cupboards, windows and doors means most homeowners would only tackle wallpapering a kitchen just once. Or, they may have really played it safe by restricting their wallpaper activities to adding

a border. And, even “washable” wallpaper had to stay on the walls, where it would, over time, get splattered and stained. A new product, SmartStick by MuralsYourWay.com, makes it easy to add wall designs anywhere you want in your kitchen. The moisture-resistant mural can be repositioned anywhere in the kitchen and can be reused hundreds of times without losing its adhering qualities. Murals for kitchens can even by customized. Just submit your photo through the website and the company creates a custom mural using your artwork.

and currents require a cord to deliver power from the source to whatever is being powered, right? Not anymore. The emergence of wireless power is replacing traditional cords with electromagnetic fields. While the science behind wireless power is truly leadingedge stuff, the technology itself has some very down-to-earth, practical applications in the kitchen. How many times have you had to move cords Wireless power out of your way when Electricity is a current working with a small

appliance in your kitchen? Cords are inconvenient at least and dangerous at worst if they get wet or damaged. Designers and engineers are working on adapting wireless technology for kitchen appliances so you can run a blender without ever having to plug it in.

Kitchen design continues to be a launching pad for exciting new technologies. And, today’s “innovative” kitchen technology will probably appear routine to future generations.

Designer tricks for the do-it-yourselfer E

ver watch those TV design shows and wonder how to replicate the look in your own home? It’s easy to incorporate designer tricks into your space, no matter the style or existing decor. Focus on adding layers of color and texture, and notice how hues flow from room to room to create a cohesive design. Choosing coordinating colors is easy when you have the right guide. Look for color palette cards that group colors by design themes to incorporate a favorite style, from traditional to rustic to contemporary. Then draw these hues into all elements of the room, including flooring, fabrics and light fixtures. For example, the new HGTV (R) HOME by Sherwin-Williams line of

interior paints and supplies features eight designerinspired color collections — each with 20 colors that work well together, no matter how many or how few are selected — along with expert design tips to help do-it-yourselfers create harmonious room-toroom color transitions. “Many homes today have open-floor plans that

require close attention to how colors flow between spaces,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “Our collections are designed to take the guesswork out of coordinating colors, and to give consumers the confidence and creative spark to find their personal color style.” Pull together a well-

designed home by taking cues from the overall color palette to add decorative accessories. For example, a spicy orange vase on the dining room table can play off a bold accent wall in the kitchen. Or update the look of furniture with a glossy coat of paint. Personalize with family treasures and modern, metallic or glass finishes for an eclectic, yet timeless look. Designers aren’t afraid to make a statement with a signature space. Why not play on the high-impact contrast of black and white in a foyer or infuse an electric jolt of pink in a master bath? There are no wrong choices, because color is personal — and doesn’t have to be permanent. Another popular design technique is to turn flooring into a flexible decorating element. Flooring can significantly impact a home’s overall decor by enhancing the warmth and beauty of a room. To liven up a space, try layering a vibrant area rug over a hard-surface floor or a neutral carpet — it’s easy to change as design preferences evolve.

fast-moving energy. When you sleep in the path of the doorway, you have to work to “fend off” this strong flow, thereby losing personal energy while you’re sleeping. 4) A common misconception is that sleeping with your feet pointing at the door is “bad.” This is a problem only if your feet are pointing at the door while you are sleeping in the path of the door. If you have no choice but to position yourself in the path of the door, with feet pointing at the door, place a small table at the foot of your bed with a plant or large crystal that will buffer some of the energy. 5) Avoid having the wall to the bathroom behind

your head. The bathroom consists of many drains, so the energy of the bathroom is draining. When you sleep with your head against the wall of the bathroom, it “pulls away” some of your body’s energy. The most energetically draining wall is the one with the toilet attached to it. If you have no other choice but to keep your bed in this position, place a small mirror on the headboard, or on the wall just below the top of the mattress, in the approximate area where you lay your head, with the mirror side facing the bathroom. 6) Consider the bigger picture. Some people position their beds against a solid wall because they have read that it is “bad” feng shui to have your head under a window. Although having

your head under a window is not as favorable as a solid wall, it’s far better than to sleep in a position where you cannot see the door. If you have a window above your head, close the curtains or shades at night to cover up the “hole” in the wall. 7) Use your down time for support. By sleeping in an empowered position, you can use the “down” time while you are sleeping to your utmost advantage — not only get more peaceful rest, but to give yourself an opportunity to be your best self each day!

The Efficient Way to Cool Your Home

ot weather is here and hotter weather is on the way, so it’s time to start thinking of air conditioning. “It doesn’t make sense to swelter through humid, windless summer weather when an efficient air conditioning system can keep you cool and comfortable for pennies a day,” said Aire Conditioner Shoppe owner Neil Wiedemann. “And the higher the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio), the more you save on electric.” The operative word is “efficient.” Old or malfunctioning air conditioning systems are energy hogs that don’t do the job effectively and run up your electricity bills. Air conditioning systems available from the Aire Conditioner Shoppe are the newest models that incorporate the latest technological advances. They are unobtrusive and

CONTACT: 676-1455 virtually silent. Wiedemann, who has been in the air conditioning business since 1979, sells and installs split ductless systems on Oahu, as well as portable air conditioners. He also sells the less expensive window units that are often the choice for apartments, condos and houses. He guarantees the lowest prices for any product he sells with installation of the same equipment. For 10 years running, Fujitsu has named him “Dealer of the Year.” “About five years ago, the inverter compressor was developed, a component of the condenser,

16 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JULY 17, 2011

which is installed outside the home and connects to the air handler unit inside the home,” Wiedemann said. “Then last year another advance was made in the technology, making it possible to cool up to eight separate rooms in the house with the same condenser connected to eight separate air handlers, all of which can be operated and set for the desired temperature independently. Automatic swing louvers and multiple fan speeds in the handler — the unit mounted in the home — allow you to control the amount and direction of the airflow to maximize comfort.” Wiedemann pointed out that split-ductless systems can be just as efficient as central air conditioning, or more efficient in terms of energy savings, depending on the lifestyle of the homeowner.

Even the window air conditioning units, which are generally what you see in older apartment buildings or townhomes, have been extensively improved both in efficiency and appearance. However, the tenant and/or owner needs to obtain permission from the management company and/or apartment owners association to install any type of air conditioning. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe offers free onsite estimates and design consultation. The company installs and repairs what it sells. Wiedemann

credits his company’s success to a strong commitment to customer satisfaction. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe’s slogan is, “We do it right the first time.” “When our estimator reviews your needs and you make a decision on the system you want to install, you will have a quote the next day by phone or fax,” he said. “If the customer is satisfied, we draw up the contract. Once I set a price, it’s firm and it will be guaranteed the lowest available price with the same equipment,” he said.
