Origins of a

holiday staple The thick, spiced drink we know as eggnog has become synonymous with the holidays. It is so linked with the Christmas season that a person may be hard-pressed to find it sold in the supermarket any other time of the year. But eggnog wasn’t always the holiday beverage it has become. ggnog is believed to have originated in 17th century Europe, primarily as a drink for the elite, since the ingredients in the beverage were hard to come by and thusly relegated to the very rich.

There are different theories on the origins of the word eggnog itself. Some believe it has gotten its name from the Old English word “nog,” which meant “strong beer.” The “egg” refers to one of the ingredients in the beverage, fresh eggs. Others surmise that it comes from the word “noggin,” which was a vessel for serving drinks in taverns. The drink was called “egg in a noggin,” which was shortened to “eggnog.” Still, there are others who say its name is derived from the term “grog,” which was another term for booze. “Egg n’ grog” was eventually abbreviated to “eggnog.”

Although there is little certainty to the origins of the name, the recipe for eggnog has essentially remained unchanged throughout the centuries. It consists of beaten eggs, cream or milk and sugar mixed with some sort of alcoholic spirit. The Old English were believed to mix it with wine, though once the drink was brought to the New World, colonists substituted rum for the wine.

tween the Americas and the Caribbean and therefore less expensive than another spirit. As America grew and eggnog was enjoyed in different parts of the country, the rum was replaced with regional spirits, including bourbon or grain alcohol. Other ingredients were also added to give it a customized flavor. However, the use of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves has become traditional flavors for the holiday brew.

Although eggnog is widely enjoyed throughout the holiday season, in the past it was served at special events and social occasions. As a warmed beverage it can easily chase away winter’s chill. This is how it may have come to be enjoyed primarily during the holidays.

Love it or hate it, eggnog is a drink that can evoke strong feelings of the holidays within minutes. There are variations of eggnog sold commercially, but many people swear by homemade versions for their taste and authenticity. Try your own homemade eggnog with this recipe, courtesy of Cooks.com.

Holiday Eggnog (Spirited) INGREDIENTS

1 dozen eggs 1 pound powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup vanilla 8 cups evaporated milk 3 cups water 1 quart spiced rum Nutmeg, to garnish DIRECTIONS

Beat eggs until light in color, gradually add sugar, salt and vanilla. Then add milk and water. Stir in rum (brandy, bourbon or rye may also be used). Cover the nog and ripen for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Stir again and serve sprinkled with nutmeg.

Gift wrapping

TRICKS AND The holidays are here and that means shoppers have started to stockpile gifts for those they love. Once the shopping rush is over, the time to wrap all of those great finds and treasures has come.

TIPS

Although some people are gift-wrap gurus, there are many others who feel that their wrapping skills are lacking. Regardless, anyone can create delightful wrapped gifts with a little know-how.

PREPARE

The first step to wrapping is to have all of the supplies in one place. There are some people who have actually dedicated small rooms as gift-wrap stations. While you don’t have to go this far, find a large table and keep your tape, tags, paper, ribbon, scissor, pen, and other accessories nearby.

Also, sort out the gifts according to recipient and have any gift receipts handy to wrap up with the gift.

Wrap at a time when there are no distractions and you can devote your attention to the task at hand, like after children have gone to bed or during the day when no one is home.

PAPER OR BAGS?

When purchasing wrapping paper, it may be tempting to skimp on the quality of the paper to save money. However, a thicker, higher quality paper will make wrapping go more smoothly. That’s because it will be less likely to tear on boxes or when you’re rolling out and cutting it.

Thicker paper means you’ll also be able to achieve more intricate folds and better creasing around boxes.

It also may be more forgivable around oddly shaped items.

Gift bags are the go-to wrapping medium when you’re short on time or have items that are not easily wrapped with paper. Because they come in a variety of sizes — and even giant plastic bags to contain large gifts — they are often more convenient.

■ OTHER TIPS There are different tips that can help with wrapping.

• Buy neutral-patterned wrapping paper that coordinates with other papers. This way if you run out of one type of paper you can stagger other pieces and make a collage of papers so there’s no waste.

• Use ribbon to dress up a gift and direct the eye away from any imperfections.

• Keep a stack of paper scraps and use it instead of tissue paper to fill in gift bags.

• Keep scissors sharp for clean cuts.

• Pack smaller items or oddly shaped things into a different container that is easier to wrap.

• Roll up clothing and place into a paper towel tube to turn the wrapping into a candy cane shaped gift.

Practice often makes perfect when it comes to wrapping gifts. Having the right paper, a few decorative supplies and some patience can ensure that gifts look festive this year.

Keep gift receipts ORGANIZED

relatively recent component of holiday shopping — or any shopping for that matter — is the gift receipt. Keeping gift receipts organized can take a little effort on the part of the shopper to ensure each gift recipient is in possession of their respective receipts.

Gift receipts are advantageous to people who are receiving presents. Should the item not fit or be a duplicate of something they already have, a gift receipt enables them to return the item effortlessly. It also clearly indicates where the gift was purchased so one is not driving around trying to find the store for a return. Plus, should the item have been recently reduced in price, a gift receipt will allow the full value of the gift to be received.

Returning an item without a receipt could result in lost value and the sale price being rescinded. Although having a gift receipt will not entitle one to a cash refund, it will equate to a store credit in the amount of the original price purchased.

Keeping gift receipts organized may take a little trial and error. One idea is to keep two envelopes and a pen handy when shopping. Write the names of the gift recipients on the master receipt or put their initials beside their purchased items. Place those receipts in one envelope where you’ll keep your copies of the receipts. ccording to David Tutera , wedding guru and partyplanning expert, “Men should propose with personality, making it echo something meaningful to your relationship with one another and do it in a place that highlights your love story.”

That certainly sounds like good advice.

But while women seem to have the knack for conjuring up perfect wedding-related ideas, men tend to be a bit clueless on the subject.

Naturally, the first element involved with a proposal is buying an engagement ring. “This is not just any ring ... it is ‘the’ ring that she’ll cherish for the rest of her life, and may possibly pass down to her children in the future,” says Tutera. Jewelry expert, Michael O’Connor offers, “There’s a very good chance the bride has a platinum engagement ring in mind. It’s possible that she’s even offered hints about it, leaving magazine photos on the table or admiring a ring in a jewelry store window.”

“Choose a setting that truly reflects how you feel about your partner,” says Tutera. “Platinum lasts forever.”

Although the ring is a very important component of the entire proposal, make it memorable. “How did he propose?” is often the first question her girlfriends will ask once she has gotten engaged.

Whether taking place at the beach or a page right out of a fairytale, many women dream of a memorable proposal.

In a recent contest on Glamour.com, contest entrant Briana D. from New York offers the following hint, “I have always dreamt of a fairytale proposal and what better way to drop the ball then to draw out the ring design that I have in mind, fold it up and stick it in an envelope with a love note and his name on it.”

CONSIDER THIS… There are many other proposal ideas that can secure this special moment. Consider these tips, courtesy of O’Connor • Make it personal. Propose at a place that has great meaning for your relationship — where you first met, or the place where you first said “I love you.” Think about the romantic places you have visited together that can serve as the perfect backdrop for a proposal.

• Think back to all of those chick flicks you were persuaded into watching. Was there a proposal scene that she gushed about or another movie moment that stood out? Consider recreating that feeling in the proposal. If need be, man up and rewatch her favorite movies for ideas.

• Consider spontaneity. Simply scratch “Will you marry me” in the sand while walking on the beach and hand her the ring in a seashell • Do it the old fashioned, and tried-andtrue way. Bend down on one knee with a rose and ring in hand.

“Remember, the proposal and engagement doesn’t have to be expensive to be memorable. Simply keep in mind the personality and likes of the bride-to-be and chances are she’ll jump to say,’yes,’” says O’Connor.

He adds, “Almost every quality jewelry designer creates rings in platinum, some even starting at under $1,000, making it easy to find something that will work with her style and fit within almost every budget.”

Such was the case when Jera Deal, a mother of three and a school mother for her daughter Julianna’s preschool class, found herself hunting for the ideal gift to give Julianna’s teacher for her wedding. Hoping to go beyond the gifts listed in the registry, Deal decided to turn a playful game she and her family enjoyed while walking in the park into a creative gift idea.

To aid in their children’s alphabet lessons, Jera, her husband, Brad, and their three girls began “letter hunting” on walks in the park, looking for different “letters” in nature (sticks) and architecture (stones).

For each letter they found, they would take a photograph, soon collecting the entire alphabet.

While the game initially started as a playful and creative way to help her daughters learn the alphabet, Jera Deal turned that game into an ideal gift for her daughter’s teacher, custom framing the letters from her now extensive library to spell out the teacher’s new last name.

“It was a gift from the class, so I knew it had to be really special and

really unique, and something that she would never forget where it came from,” says Jera.

The gift proved to be just that, and the Deals soon discovered their idea that started as a game with their kids was also a perfect means to giving a thoughtful, unique and creative gift. Sugiyama was a successful insurance agent, but began feeling fatigued. Six years ago he was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease and the prospect of getting on dialysis. He had to fight off the initial denial, “You’re so lost. Fear sets in. There is a sense of hopelessness that life will never be the same.”

In 2008, that pessimism gave way to a glimmer of light. A week before his daughter’s graduation from pharmacy school, Sugiyama got a call from his doctor saying a kidney match had been found. The family of a complete stranger stepped forward to allow Sugiyama to write a new chapter in his life. He is deeply grateful for the anonymous gift, “Everything is wonderful. Organ donation is astounding and defies explanation.”

Since the life giving procedure, Sugiyama has been able to celebrate his 64th birthday, see his son become an attorney in New York, his daughter get married in San Francisco, and is expecting his first grandchild next year.

“To get, you don’t take. You give. When you sacrifice something you gain,” says Sugiyama who continues advocating the NKFHs mission of prevention, early detection, and education, “Through volunteering I have found people who are thriving. It gives you a sense of hope.”

That increase surprised forecasters, many of whom predicted holiday spending would decline for the fifth straight year.
