New home ‘centered’ by surrounding ocean, childhood memories This is the second in a three-part series. lan Nelson and his wife, Cyndi Keller, are in the process of watching Graham Builders bring their dreams for Alan’s childhood home on Spinnaker Isle in Hawaii Kai to fruition. Like so many homeowners in Hawaii, they love the idea of bringing Hawaii’s temperate climate, beautiful water and outdoor living “into” their home. “We asked Graham Builders to design a home reminiscent of my childhood on the water in Hawaii Kai,” said Alan. “I grew up on the water and I work as a marine biologist. I have spent a lifetime enjoying all the gifts that the ocean has to offer, including surfing and just being in it! We wanted to incorporate the open, airy, wonderful fresh feel of our tropical Hawaiian waters into our home.” In his book, “The Hawaiian

Alan and Cyndi asked Graham Builders to “build that age-old tradition” into their new home. could, without sacrificing privacy, and giving them the feeling that they really do live in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.” “Everything about our Graham Builders home- building experience has been positive,” said Cyndi. “It’s exciting to see all the discussions and drawings as they finally become three-dimensional. We feel like this has been a group effort and that Graham Builders is just as excited about the project as we are.” This story is part two of three that follows the Nelson-Kellers in their design+build journey with Graham Builders. BUILDNEWORREDO? fter attending a Homeworks Construction Build New Or ReDo seminar, a couple with two young children decided that Homeworks was the right contractor for their project. They had recently purchased a 65-yearold home in Kailua with the intention of remodeling. When Homeworks project coordinator Sarah VanDeVanter was contacted by the couple requesting a consultation, she agreed to meet with them at the home. “Initially, we looked into the possibilities of remodeling, but after a close inspection of the home, inside and out, it became evident that the scales would tip in favor of a complete rebuild,” VanDeVanter said. “When I first proposed looking at building a new house, they were excited about the prospect of owning a brand new custom home, but worried about cost. “Even with a significant budget of approximately $150,000 to $175,000 for the remodel, it would not be possible to turn this house around. The rooms were small and cramped, and the kitchen was completely closed off from the rest of the house with no natural light or ventilation. Also, the house had been poorly maintained and suffered from significant ter-

mite damage ... then we discovered several illegal additions. When we reviewed the problems with the owners and explained what it would take to fix them, it didn’t take them very long to agree that rebuilding was the right decision.” As a design/build firm, Homeworks was able to handle every phase of the project “in house” — from demolition, to plans and permits, to interior finishes. The owner, a professional chef, had specific criteria for his all-new “dream kitchen.” The entire creative process was a collaborative effort with the Homeworks team, including architect Mario Tadeo, kitchen

Since it’s that time of year again, spring, better weather means starting the garden and maintaining your asphalt. Don’t let your investment get oxidized and crumble away. The heart of an effective pavement maintenance program includes periodic sealcoating with an asphaltbased emulsion pavement sealer. Asphalt-based emulsions are not toxic like coal tar, and are water-based, leaving an easier cleanup. If left untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. This is because it is made of asphalt binder and rock, so immediately after paving, the asphalt binder combines with oxygen and

becomes brittle or oxidized. This leads to cracking and weathering soon after installation because moisture penetrates the asphalt, which causes further damage and deterioration to the pavement. Sealcoating protects against oxidation. An unsealed pavement allows water to penetrate the pavement structure, leading to base erosion and, ultimately, pavement failure. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier to stop water penetration. Also, if left unsealed, oil and gasoline will soften and deteriorate the exposed asphalt binder. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier that resists attack from oil and gasoline. Once the sealcoat begins to wear off and the rock is exposed, it’s time to apply another coat. Walker-Moody Construction has the
