The influenza pandemic struck in 1918 to kill around 20 to 40 million people, yet it is still around today in the form of our flu season, which is just around the corner for the autumn and winter seasons. The top theory of why flu season strikes in the winter is because of the virus’s ability to able to flourish in cold and dry weather. 6

To avoid the flu, here are some small things you can do:

By following simple guidelines and sharing this knowledge, you and your loved ones can lower your risks of being one of the many that are infected every year. 7

BANANA BREAD SERVING SIZE: 1 LOAF 2-3 very ripe bananas, peeled 1/3 cup melted butter 3/4 cup sugar (adjustable) 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking soda Pinch of salt 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

>Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), and butter a 4x8-inch loaf pan. >In a bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas. >Mix in the baking soda and salt. Stir in sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour.

MUSHROOM AND EGG TOAST

>Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 350°F (175°C), or until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean.

SERVING SIZE: 4 SERVINGS

¼ cup extra virgin olive oil Sliced mushrooms 4 slices sourdough toast 4 fried eggs 4 tablespoons chopped parsley Any other seasoning

>Remove from oven and cool completely on a rack. Remove the banana bread from the pan. Slice and serve.

>In large skillet, heat extra virgin olive oil over medium-high. >Add mushrooms and cook until tender and browned (around 8 minutes) Season >Divide among the 4 toast slices >Top each with a fried egg and parsley! 8

CARAMEL APPLES SERVING SIZE: 6 APPLES

>Blend dates, milk, and vanilla in a food processor or anything that can blend those ingredients together (super high powered blender). Process until the mixture is thick, smooth, and spreadable (around 5 minutes). If it’s too thick, add more milk. If it’s too runny, add more dates. This will act as the caramel.

16 ounces dates (pitted) ¼ cup milk (can add more if needed) 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 pinch of salt 6 apples

>Meanwhile, line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. >Push wooden sticks/twigs into the tops of the apples >Dip the apple into the “caramel.” >Add desired toppings.

THAI PORK WRAPS SERVING SIZE: 4 SERVINGS >Cook pork and garlic in vegetable oil over high (around 7 minutes) >Turn off heat and stir in next ingredients (excluding lettuce) >Serve with lettuce 9

1 pound ground pork 1 clove garlic, grated 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 head butter lettuce

I can’t believe it’s time to apply for college. Those six years of endless essays and tons of AP classes all lead up to this. It’s hard to decide where to go and how to maximize your chances of getting in but don’t stress!
