2016 Conference Newsletter

Message from the president By: Kristen E. Capezza President, NYSACAC Executive Director of University Admissions, Adelphi University

As children and teenagers, we spend our years wishing the time by; a myriad of “I-can’t-waits”… I can’t wait to be a teenager, I can’t wait to start high school, I can’t wait to drive, I can’t wait to attend college, and the list goes on. As the time flies by and we hit these various milestones, our parents, guardians, and loved ones always seemed to be begging just the opposite. The phrase “I wish time would slow down” simply didn’t resonate with my younger self as it echoed through my home’s hallways. continued on page 3

And yet today, with each passing year, I find myself asking where the time goes and wishing it to slow down. This year seemingly passed in the blink of an eye, presenting an incredible series of noteworthy challenges and exciting developments. Relying on my own experience and knowledge along with the wisdom throughout our industry, I’ve spent this past year connecting with colleagues throughout New York State, past leadership of NYSACAC, future leaders of our association, and industry colleagues from across the nation, positioning our organization to be in a leading role amidst the changes of higher education. As my tenure as president comes to a close, I am extraordinarily blessed to have had this experience in leading such a dedicated and transformative association, growing both professionally and personally along the way. We are fortunate to have an incredible team of nearly 50 executive board members who have tirelessly committed themselves to providing quality opportunities of professional development, offering award-winning programs of access, and producing sound financial decisions for our organization. New programs such as Winter Institute and a Middle Management conference track have been introduced this year along with the re-launch of our NYSACAC Subway Tour. We’ve taken calculated, wise, precautionary steps in adopting new insurance policies that better protect our board members, our volunteers, and our program participants – all while preserving the impactful programs our organization delivers. Together, we have allowed NYSACAC to grow in a sustainable and strategic manner, improving and capitalizing on the successes of years past. And perhaps most importantly, we’ve achieved record-setting membership counts, particularly among our secondary community. The 2016 Annual Conference, hosted this year by our friends at Wagner College, opens the doors for many of you to dive deeper in our industry knowledge, reconnect with former colleagues, network with new faces, and develop lifelong relationships with mentors and friends. Use this experience to light your path and rejuvenate your passion for our industry. We are the influencers of education and it is moments like those found at this conference that shape our decisions and actions of the future. Time is bound to fly by as you enjoy all of the professional development and social activities planned for you. Be sure to take a moment to sit back and appreciate the opportunities at your fingertips. Time may not slow down but the memories can last forever. Thank you all for a year full of moments I will never forget. For the last time as your NYSACAC President, I wish you all successful careers filled with an appreciation of time’s most precious moments.

Partnering for Success:

The Role of Afterschool in College Persistence By: Partnership for After School Education (PASE)

The failure to complete college is the result of a confluence of factors. Young people from low-income, historically underrepresented backgrounds, or who are the first generation in their family to attend college, disproportionately lack access to the critical supports and services that help prepare them for college success. They often do not receive sufficient information and encouragement to strive for an education beyond high school and may have misperceptions about the cost of higher education and the steps required to prepare for it. Young people need to be engaged early to build their awareness of college, and they need support in the steps necessary to gain admission to, thrive in, and graduate from college. The Partnership for After School Education (PASE) began exploring this topic to determine whether there is a role for afterschool programs to support college persistence. We know from a decade of experience that afterschool programs can provide vital supports in preparing students to gain admission to college. In addition to drawing from the qualitative data gathered from our experiences offering college prep and success capacity building services over the last four years, we specifically: conducted a literature scan and review; held focus groups and strategic discussions; conducted interviews of college students, community-based organizations, and higher education institutions; gathered survey data; and held forums to discuss and share best and promising practices in college persistence. Our strong confirmed conclusion is that, yes, there is a role for afterschool programs to support college persistence. Community-based afterschool programs play a crucial role in helping youth build the skills necessary for academic success, healthy social and emotional development, and navigating the college process from their earliest educational experiences through graduation. We have learned that the persistence-related programming that currently exists within higher education often closely matches the positive youth development models employed in afterschool programs which emphasize leadership, empowerment, resilience and self-advocacy. Essentially, afterschool programs are critical in supporting young people to access, thrive in, and succeed in college.

In our report, Partnering for Success, we highlight what some afterschool programs are already doing to support college persistence – in middle and high school, during the summer after high school graduation to combat Summer Melt, and during the college years. We share aspirational examples that demonstrate that it is not enough to say our youth “got in” to college, but that the goals should include matriculation and graduation. We believe that starting early and continuing support throughout college will help students persevere and overcome obstacles to graduation. While this report focuses on young people who apply to, are accepted to, and attend four-year residential colleges, we recognize that persistence challenges are even greater for part time students, those who commute daily to school, and those who are working towards achieving an Associate degree. In order to be successful in this work and build upon the best and promising practices highlighted in this report, afterschool providers need qualified, trained staff, as well as effective partnerships and collaborations with public schools and higher education institutions, and expanded funding and resources. The report serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to think more strategically about the ways we can leverage existing resources, empower those who are currently engaged in college persistence work, and ignite further collaboration in order to fully engage afterschool programs with other stakeholders in our collective efforts to substantially impact a student’s success.
