Second Essay for Orchestra Violin Concerto Symphony No 9 op 95 From the New World
Julian Clayton conducts Scotland’s only national youth symphony orchestra, as they welcome in the New Year from the New World, performing Antonín v Dvorák’s famed Symphony No. 9. In a programme drawing inspiration from the USA, the orchestra will also perform Samuel Barber’s emotional Second Essay for Orchestra, before being joined by American violinist Kurt Nikkanen, in a performance of Stravinsky’s neoclassical Violin Concerto. VANISHING BOUNDARIES
For this innovative inter-disciplinary project, NYOS Futures collaborates with artists working in a variety of media to produce a truly unique, live audiovisual experience. The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland’s contemporary chamber ensemble will perform highly imaginative new compositions, written in response to a collection of immersive visual arts projects, combining elements of film, photography, animation, electronic surround-sound design, story telling and live performance. In the first half The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland perform three fantastic pieces based around the theme of heros. Presented by Dutch Maestro Roland Kieft, audiences will be guided through these exciting pieces, which tell tales of Dutch pirates, phantom war heros, and the inventor of the famous aircraft that won the Battle of Britain. THAT BLESSED WOOD
NYOS’s pre-professional chamber orchestra premiere That Blessed Wood, a new work commissioned by NYOS from the distinguished and renowned Scottish composer, Rory Boyle. Unusually, it is the bassoon that takes centre stage and NYOS is delighted that the virtuosic solo role is to be performed by David Hubbard, Principal Bassoonist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, for whom the piece has been written.
