Clarke Says NYPD’s Anti-Muslim Video Proves Racism

Don’t Let Them Steal More Than Your Heart

W

hen your grandparents started dating, chances are they knew each other already or had mutual friends.

In those days, a blind date - going out with someone you hadn’t met or knew nothing about - was a rarity. Today, with the boom in online dating, going on first dates with strangers is commonplace, while dating a friend seems like the “old-fashioned” approach. Plenty of people find love online every year, but when you’re dating a stranger, it’s important to take steps to ensure the only thing they steal is your heart. Online dating, and other forms of blind dating, require extra caution to protect your personal information from those who might use it without your permission. Safely connecting online Joining one or more dating websites can be a great way to meet people you might enjoy spending time with. Yet, nearly half of online daters fail to verify the authenticity of a potential match before communicating, according to a survey conducted by Impulse Research on behalf of ProtectMyID. By following some basic safety guidelines, you can help ensure the experience is as positive as possible and minimize the risk of being targeted by cyber criminals who frequent dating sites. First, be careful what you share in your profile. Never provide your full name, phone numbers, personal email addresses, home address, or other potentially identifying information such as where you work. Use the website’s built-in tools for contacting and communicating with other members. Be wary of requests for personal information such as where you bank or what you are doing 24/7. And, be careful to not reveal potentially valuable information, such as your mother’s maiden name (a frequently used identifier for online accounts). These warnings sound obvious, but be alert that the information doesn’t reveal itself in obvious ways. Scammers might make a request for a banking recommendation, or an inquiry as to where your family is from. No matter how convincing the story, never respond to a request for money or financial information. Instead, report the individual to the website’s security team; there’s never any reason for someone you’ve just met (or haven’t yet met) to make that kind of request.

While you’re bringing so many new people into your life, keep an eye on your credit and financial accounts to ensure you detect fraud quickly. An identity theft protection service like ProtectyMyID can help you monitor your credit and know sooner if your identity has been compromised. ProtectMyID uses daily Internet scanning to determine if your information appears on suspect sites or chat rooms that specialize in trafficking stolen credit card numbers. And, identity theft resolution agents provide personal assistance to resolve new identity theft issues. Communicating safely Once you’ve made initial contact, be smart and cautious in your communications. Don’t exchange private emails or engage in texting or instant messaging until you’ve gotten to know the person better through the website’s protected communication methods. When you’re ready to talk to each other, consider doing so through an online service like Skype or Yahoo Messenger, rather than exchanging phone numbers. These free services allow you to have a voice conversation over the computer without revealing something as personal as your cell phone or land line number. Meeting for the first time When you take the next step and meet in person, always take precautions. Meet in a public place and make sure a trusted loved one knows where you will be, who you are with and how long you expect to be there. Keep your cell phone handy and consider arranging a check in with a trusted friend. Drive your own car to the meeting or arrange for your own taxi; don’t rely on your date for transportation. Adhere to the safety basics that you always have in place when you go out, including keeping personal items and your drink in your possession at all times and leaving unneeded ID like your Social Security card at home. If meeting your online date requires longdistance traveling, you need to be even more careful and smart. Make sure someone at home knows your travel plans and schedule. If you’re arriving at your destination by plane, do not accept a ride from the person you’re meeting and don’t agree to stay in their home. Instead, arrange for your own rental car or taxi and stay in a hotel. Do not disclose the location of the hotel until you’ve met the person and established a level of trust. Finally, if something doesn’t feel right or you feel pressured, end the date immediately. Trusting your gut can help protect you from an unpleasant or unsafe experience.

“It is deeply disheartening to hear Commissioner Raymond Kelly admit that the documentary ‘The Third Jihad,’ an anti-Muslim video was shown to about 1,500 officers in the Department. Commissioner Kelly must hold officers accountable for promoting a climate of fear and hatred. Unfortunately, this incident points to the culture of fear and racism that seems to exist in the Department,” said Rep. Yvette D. Clarke. “As the Representative of the 11th Congressional District, I have the privilege of serving a diverse group of people; with many different religions and ethnicities. It is important that Congresswoman we have a police force that embraces these cultural differences Yvette D. Clarke within the community rather than divide the community based on fear. As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, I understand the importance of ensuring that our first responders have the anti-terrorism tools they need…. however, using anti-Muslim propaganda only promotes a false sense of security. New York City deserves better and the NYPD has a duty to uphold its integrity.”

Williams Agrees With Mayor’s Stance On Nypd’s Role In Islamophobic Propaganda Film

“Mayor Bloomberg and I agree that screening an Islamophobic film to NYPD officers, particularly during antiterrorism training, was unacceptable,” said Councilmember Jumaane Williams. It would stand to reason that if he understands this, he should also understand that this is a product of this city’s unjust policing culture that excuses this kind of behavior. The disparate way that communities of more color are treated originates from decisions like this, and those decisions originate from the discriminatory culture that the Mayor has refused to acknowledge. Mayor Bloomberg is a smart man, so I would hope that he can follow and recognize this evolution Councilmember of high-level mistakes.” Jumaane Williams “Deputy Commissioner Browne’s role in this fiasco is also highly problematic. This is far from the first time that he has displayed his penchant for questionable judgment, continual misrepresentation of events or blatant lying. I have seen this firsthand. If this is the standard that the Deputy Commissioner wants to continue to represent to the taxpayers that afford him his salary, then it is time for him to be removed. Furthermore, if Commissioner Kelly has approved his decisions, then he too deserves the public’s scrutiny.”

Alliance For Quality Education Responds To President

“New York should take President Obama’s challenge and be the first state to pass a law to keep all students in school and learning until they reach the age of 18,” said Billy Easton, Executive Director, Alliance for Quality Education. “And just as President Obama has called on Congress to take steps now to halt the growth of college student debt, New York should stop the growth of student debt now,” said Billy Easton, Executive Director, Alliance for Quality Education.

A.G. On State Of The Union “I would like to thank President Obama for his leader-

ship in the creation of a coordinated investigation that marshals state and federal resources to bring justice for the victims of the misconduct that caused the mortgage crisis,” said Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. “In coordination with our federal partners, our office will continue its steadfast commitment to holding those responsible for the economic crisis accountable, providing meaningful relief for homeowners commensurate with the scale of the misconduct, and getting our economy moving again. Valley Stream Target Cleans House 20% Of Workers Out Of Job

P

reparing for the February 1st federal hearing on Target Corp.’s violations of the National Labor Relations Act, United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) Local 1500 Assistant to the President, Pat Purcell, expressed outrage that over 20% of the workforce at Valley Stream Target has been “turned over” or replaced, cleansing the store of longtime employees seeking better working conditions from the billion-dollar company.

“How is it in this job starved economy, with so many people looking for jobs, Target has turned-over 20% of its workforce at Valley Stream in a short 7-month span?”, Purcell questioned. “It’s evident Target began a practice of ‘cleansing’ their workforce in fear and in anticipation of another union vote and the possibility of providing wages and benefits up to par with unionized retailers,” Purcell said. Addressing the February 1st National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) hearing on Target’s violations of workers’ rights, Purcell said: “Target has resorted to playing games with people’s livelihoods. Their actions demonstrate what we and the National Labor Relations Board have asserted: Target will do anything to prevent their employees from banding together to fight for more respect at work, even violate the law,” Questioning the motive behind the high turnover rate, Purcell questioned why Target’s turnover rate was on pace to nearly double the national retail average. “If Target paid more and provided better benefits, would we be seeing a turnover this high?”

MIAMI, Fla. - Doctors here say an American man is clinging to life after he was shot during a botched robbery outside a bank in Portau-Prince, the capital of Haiti. Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital here said on Saturday that Dave Bompart, 50, of Columbus, Ohio, is still in critical condition after he was shot in the stomach on Tuesday afternoon. His wife, Nicolle, told reporters here that Bompart, who was building an orphanage in Haiti, had just withdrawn money to buy food for orphans when he was shot. “It’s extremely painful not to be able to talk to him,” she said. “But he knows that I love him.” “There’s nothing that’s been left unsaid.” Mrs. Bompart said at least one assailant approached her husband at the bank and opened fire. She said he rushed to a nearby medical facility, and has been mostly sedated ever since. Dr. Nicholas Namias, a leading surgeon at the trauma center at Memorial Hospital, said Bompart was “very, very sick.” Mrs. Bompart said her Trinidadian-born husband relocated to Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. She said he had collaborated with the University of Miami’s Project Medishare, a joint initiative with American and Haitian doctors, in providing comprehensive health and development services in Haiti. Mrs. Bompart said her husband ran Medishare’s logistics operation before creating an orphanage on the impoverished, French-speaking Ca-

‘Barefoot Bandit' Gets Jail Time For Bahamas Crash-Landing

WASHINGTON - A United States federal judge has sentenced the “Barefoot Bandit” who crash-landed a plane in the Bahamas almost two years ago to six and a half years in jail. Judge Richard A. Jones imposed the sentence on the former fugitive, whose real name is Colton Harris-Moore. Last month, Washington State Judge Vicki I. Churchill, sentenced Harris-Moore, 20, to seven years and three months on 33 charges after he pleaded guilty to the charges in both courts. Harris-Moore had eluded US law enforcement for more than two years, becoming what observers describe as “a folk hero” in the process before crashing a plane on July 2010 in the Bahamas. He earned his unusual moniker after conducting the burglary spree by targeting planes, boats and luxury cars in the United States and Canada. Authorities said he committed some of the crimes without shoes on, gaining notoriety after teaching himself to fly, then stealing four aircraft, as well as cars, boats, bikes and cash in a spree across Washington State, Idaho, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. He was arrested in July 2010 after a plane he stole in Indiana crashlanded on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Harris-Moore pleaded guilty to seven federal charges in a Seattle court in June, after reaching an agreement with prosecutors that any proceeds earned from selling his story would be used to compensate his victims. He pleaded guilty to seven federal charges in a Seattle court in June, after reaching an agreement with prosecutors that any proceeds he might earn from selling his story would be used to compensate his victims. Harris-Moore has signed a US$1.3 million contract with 20th Century Fox Studios for a movie on his life. He requested that the first compensation check be sent to the owner of a restaurant on Washington's Orcas Island, where he said he stole US$18,000. “I am lucky to be alive, absolutely lucky. In fact, I shouldn’t be alive today. I should have died years ago,” Harris-Moore responded, when Judge Jones asked him on Friday what he would tell his young admirers. “I would say that the things I did, which some might think as perhaps cool, were extremely dangerous and terrifying,” he added, advising the youth to “focus on their education, which is exactly what I’m doing right now.” His lawyer, John Henry Browne, said he hoped some of the people who lost their businesses “and some of the people who lost their peace of mind could be compensated.

Hundreds Pay Tribute To Vincentian Gunned Down By NYPD

H

undreds of Caribbean nationals and New Yorkers paid their last respects to an armed Vincentian man who relatives said was protecting his Brooklyn, New York home from burglars earlier this month when he was shot and killed by New York police.

It was standing-room-only for the funeral service of Duane Browne, 26, at the New Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The mourners, who comprised an overwhelming number of young people, paid tribute in songs, words and music to a youth who many said was senselessly shot dead by cops on January 12, still clad in his pajamas “What can I say? They killed my son innocently, said the victim’s mother, Alice Browne, while his father, Othneil Browne, a former high school principal in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said “it’s sad. I came to America in 1984 and I’m coming back for burial.” New York City Council representative for the East New York section of Brooklyn, Councilman Charles Barron, a frequent critic of the New York Police Department (NYPD), and Jamaican-born, the Rev. Rohan Wellington, who conducted the funeral service, said the police should be held fully accountable for the tragedy. “We deeply express our condolences to the family and deep sorrow for the young man’s death. And, if reports are accurate that he (victim) went for a while without medical attention, it’s a miscarriage of justice, and it should be fully investigated,” they added. “To me, it’s a tragedy,” said prominent Caribbean community activist Roy Antoine. “I hope some of this can be stopped. I’m sorry for the

grieving family.” The NYPD admitted that officers shot and killed Dwayne Browne while responding to a 911 call. The police department said a woman had reported that two men, armed with guns and wearing hoods and masks, were threatening her boyfriend, Dale O’Garro. Police said that when the officers reached the address, they encountered a man carrying a .38 caliber revolver. Officers mistook him for one of the perpetrators, when in fact the man was O’Garro's half-brother, Dwayne Browne, police said. “Drop the gun! Drop the gun!” cops reportedly yelled at Browne. Browne took a step back and went to raise his hand, and Officer Kevin Murtha, of the 75th Police Precinct, fired one shot -- killing the him outside the home, the source said. “He failed to comply with one of the officer's directions not to move and was shot once in the chest,” NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly admitted. Police said Browne was taken to the nearby Brookdale University Hospital, where he died.

Police said they were not aware of their mistake until after Browne was shot. Browne is survived by a seven-yearold son, Dasani. Police said Browne had a lengthy criminal record, but relatives have disputed that claim. The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau said the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues. Browne’s fatal shooting came exactly a month after Police Detective Peter Figoski, also of the 75th Precinct, was shot dead amid a similarly confusing sequence of events involving a drug robbery. Dr. Robert Hickson, a Professor in Mathematics at Columbia University in New York, was philosophical about Browne’s death. “Life is a vector of uncertainty,” said Dr. Hickson, who occasionally plays for the Vincentian team Imperial in the Brooklyn Cricket League. “You wake up in the morning. You have the most excellent of plans, but you never know what the final outcome would be, because the final outcome belongs to God.”

Sundial Herbs Combats Pirates

NEW YORK LIBERTY STAR * JANUARY 13-24, 2012

By Ivrol Hines NYLS

S

till fighting piracy, Sundial Herbs and Herbal Products International recently announced that it’s 32 ounce bottles now sport orange caps.

The company, now celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary, has produced a wide variety of products, uniquely developed from herbs, roots, barks and natural elements, to relieve a various pains and ailments when used as directed. According to Adoni, manager of the Sundial Koromantee store in the Bronx where Sundial Products are produced, the company discovered recently that some local Korean fruit and vegetable markets are manufacturing and selling inferior look-a-like products bearing Sundial brands to the general public, causing health stirs among other concerns for loyal customers. “This was going on for sometime,” said Adoni. “Our customers brought it to our attention and we immediately launched our investigation. We sent letters, we went out to some of the markets and stores that were selling these inferior products and told them that what they’re selling is not the right thing.” After several failed attempts to curb the problem, Sundial took the matter to the New York State Federal Court. “We were able to identify the source where the retailers were getting the products, and we took it to the court,” said Adoni. “These people have defamed our character and cost us sales and customers with their inferior products. Whether its compensation and or prosecution, at this point we’re leaving that up to the courts.” Sundial Herbs and Herbal Products International has been in existence since the late 1970’s. According to Adoni, the recipes from Sundial products go back at least 100 years, and through tradition, the remedies and formulas have been passed on from one generation to the next. The brand is well-respected and internationally recognized and distributed around the world among various ethnicities. According to the “Bush Doctor”, Baba Rashan Abdul Hakim, founder of Sundial Products, when tampered with, the inferior product fails to yield the same results as its original. “People can’t get the same results,” he said. “They think they’re taking one of our products and using it accordingly, however the result that they are accustomed to getting is not there, because they purchased a look a-like product from a Korean store. The products sold in Sundial stores and other health food stores are authentic, said Adoni. However, Sundial has issued

a public warning against purchasing any look-a-like products from Asian and Korean markets. “The 32 ounce bottles now have a orange cap and customers should look for that,” said Adoni. “We understand that people rely on our products for health reasons and we’re taking the matter very seriously. We’re telling customers to purchase our products from health food stores or Sundial stores. If they are unsure about making a purchase at any particular store, they can always call us here to verify.” For more information about Sundial products, call (718) 798-3962 or visit sundialherbs.com.

The Reality Of Eternity By Tony Evans

I

n His Presence: Abraham said, “Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony” (Luke 16:25).

At the end of time, we will all face the Lord and He will want to know how we used our time on earth to get ready for eternity. If we only live for earth, all we will receive is earth. But once we start living for heaven, earth is just a bonus to the eternal existence we will enjoy. It is foolish to try to run from death. Instead, we must decide to be creatures of eternity. Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). If you are in Christ you

have no reason to fear death because when you die, you will instantly be with God. Since we were made for eternity, what are we doing in light of what we were made for? Paul set the example when he said: “Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2). Paul’s mind was on heaven, but he was still functioning for the Lord here on earth. He was heavenly minded but still did earthly good. Because he lived in light of His eternal purpose, he made his life decisions in light of the reference point of eternity. Everybody you know is headed toward eternity; nobody has any other choice. This life is not all there is, so we share Jesus Christ with our unsaved neighbors. We live for God’s glory because this life is not all there is. One Minute Please “Lord, clarify our eternal perspective and help us to see Your purpose for our lives because we don’t know when we will leave this world.” About Tony Evans Dr. Evans has served as an associate evangelist with the Grand Old Gospel Fellow-

Dr. Tony Evans ship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He helped organize and served as Vice President of Urban Evangelical Mission, a national evangelistic and church planting organization, and served as an associate professor in the Pastoral Ministries Department of Dallas Theological Seminary in the areas of evangelism, homiletics, and black church studies. He also served as chaplain for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and presently serves as chaplain for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

The Heat Is On: Five getaways to kindle the romance

R

omance is in the air. Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day, planning a honeymoon, or just looking for a fun getaway with your better half, these trip ideas are guaranteed to ignite a spark.

Escape on a cruise Put away your smartphone, shun the hassle of cooking and don’t even think about making the bed. A cruise ship is the perfect place for couples to skirt reality for a while. Pretty much anything you could want is at your disposal and you hardly have to lift a finger. The top cruise lines have really upped their game in the culinary realm, so try a few different entrees and a few different desserts, and splurge for a drink package. For uber-relaxation, book a couples’ massage. Celebrity Cruise’s AquaSpa, for example, pampers its guests as they literally watch the ocean float by. Splurge for a dream vacation Hawaii embodies the words dreamy, romantic and sensual like almost nowhere else. The Big Island of Hawaii was named by Away. com as a top-10 destination for a honeymoon vacation on a budget. “Hawaii is a great choice for a honeymoon, but many people think they can’t afford it. The trick is to look beyond the name-brand places on the Big Island, like Kona, in favor of a hidden-gem like Kealakekua Bay,” says Away.com’s senior editor Kate Chandler. Hawaii is known for its sandy beaches, but it has so much to offer, such as snorkeling expeditions, rolling golf courses, interesting cultural and natural history and plenty of yummy food choices. You can also choose to do nothing at all besides just basking in your love somewhere indescribable. Take a hot air balloon ride What better way to experience the beauty

of Napa and Sonoma wine country than with a birds-eye view? Book a sunrise or sunset tour, complete with a mini-picnic and local sparkling wine to set the mood as your drift above the vines and wineries. Very few things can match the serene energy you feel as you watch the first rays of sun begin to paint the morning sky. Hear a gig The saying goes that it takes two to tango. But in Austin, Texas, you might well swap in the two-step instead. Orbitz.com named Austin one of its 2012 Hotspots, and for good reason. Austin is the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World,” and this music mecca is living up to its reputation. It’s home to more live-music venues per capita than anywhere else in the United States, so any time, day or night, just follow the sounds to find something playing. While you listen, loosen your belt and enjoy the good eats that Austin has to offer. The city is well known for its barbecue and Tex-Mex dishes. Watch the stars For those who prefer to experience the outdoors with a touch of luxury, head somewhere like Amangiri in Canyon Point, Utah. This resort rests on 600 acres and was consciously designed to blend into its surroundings; every window has a sweeping view toward Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument. One of the best aspects of the American Southwest, whether you’re staying at a ranch or roughing it in a tent, is that you’re never too far from an unobstructed view of the night sky. Grab a blanket or two and snuggle up for some truly romantic stargazing.

Do School Uniforms Make A Difference? Q. My niece attends a charter school and they wear uniforms. My sister thinks that wearing uniforms helps improve academics in schools. Is this true?

A. Well, it depends on whom you ask. If you ask people who went to Catholic or other religious schools, other private schools or who went to school outside of the USA where everyone wore uniforms; they would tell you yes! Those who never wore uniforms may take another view on the subject! Researchers are divided over how much of an impact - if any - dress policies have upon student learning. A 2004 book makes the case that uniforms do not improve school safety or academic discipline. A 2005 study, on the other hand, indicates that in some Ohio high schools uniforms may have improved graduation and attendance rates, although no improvements were observed in academic performance. In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy. President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement when he said in his 1996 State of the Union speech, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their

students to wear school uniforms.” The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms! According to proponents, school uniforms: • Help prevent gangs from forming on campus • Encourage discipline • Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes • Help identify intruders in the school • Diminish economic and social barriers between students • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride • Improve attendance Opponents contend that school uniforms: • Violate a student’s right to freedom of expression • Are simply a Band-Aid on the issue of school violence • Make students a target for bullies from other schools • Are a financial burden for poor families • Are an unfair additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education • Are difficult to enforce in public schools What Research Says About School Uniforms! Virginia Draa, assistant professor at Youngstown State University, reviewed attendance, graduation and proficiency pass rates at 64 public high schools in Ohio. Her final analysis surprised her: “I really went into this thinking uniforms don’t make a difference, but I

came away seeing that they do. At least at these schools, they do. I was absolutely floored.” Draa’s study concluded that those schools with uniform policies improved in attendance, graduation and suspension rates. She was unable to connect uniforms with academic improvement because of such complicating factors as changing instructional methods and curriculum. University of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma reached a different conclusion. In his 2004 book, The School Uniform Movement and What It Tells Us About American Education: A Symbolic Crusade, Brunsma reviewed past studies on the effect of uniforms on academic performance. He also conducted his own analysis of two enormous databases, the 1988 National Educational Longitudinal Study and the 1998 Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Brunsma concluded that there is no positive correlation between uniforms and school safety or academic achievement. Meanwhile, the movement toward uniforms in public schools has spread to about a quarter of all elementary schools. Experts say that the number of middle and high schools with uniforms is about half the number of elementary schools. If uniforms are intended to curb school violence and improve academics, why are they not more prevalent in middle and high schools, where these goals are just as important as in elementary schools? Because, says Brunsma, “It’s desperately much more difficult to implement uniforms in high schools, and even middle schools, for student resistance is much, much

higher. In fact, most of the litigation resulting from uniforms has been located at levels of K-12 that are higher than elementary schools. Of course, this uniform debate is also one regarding whether children have rights, too!” The debate over uniforms in public schools encompasses many larger issues than simply what children should wear to school. It touches on issues of school improvement, freedom of expression and the “culture wars.” It’s no wonder the debate rages on. Smile Big With Dentures By Dr. Dwight Williams

W

hat are the different types of dentures?

Answer: There are three main types of dentures: complete, partial, and overdentures. Dentures are artificial replacements for your natural teeth, they replace missing or unhealthy teeth. Dentures will restore your smile, self esteem and return some of your ability to chew. Dentures can replace all of your teeth or they can replace a few missing ones. Complete dentures are usually made of an acrylic resin, while partial dentures are made from a combination of acrylic resin and metal. Types of dentures The type of denture you will need is based on how many remaining natural teeth you

have and your individual need. Complete dentures cover your entire jaw and can replace your upper or lower teeth, they consist of artificial teeth and gums, they are custom made and fit closely on your natural bony ridges so that they will not dislodge easily. Partial dentures fit around your remaining, healthy teeth. Partial dentures usually have artificial teeth and gum, connected by a metal framework. Partial dentures are usually held in place by clasps that attach to your natural teeth. Overdentures fit over a few remaining teeth or dental implants. The few remaining teeth or implants give the denture stability to minimize the denture shifting in your mouth. To accommodate an overdenture the teeth have to be reshaped or the implants have to be strategically placed prior

to denture fabrication. Immediate dentures can be either complete or partial, they are usually fabricated by the dentist before the teeth are removed. On the day that the teeth are removed, the dentures are inserted, usually they need to be relined (adjusted) by the dentist over the next few months, because the gums shrink as the extraction sites heal and the immediate dentures will become loose.

Recommendation With modern dental techniques dentures can be made to look more natural and fit more comfortable than years ago. The metal clasps once used are now been replace by material that closely mimics the color of the gums. Dental implants have also revolutionize the way missing teeth are replaced, these are artificial roots made of titanium that are surgically implanted in the jaw bone, they are

allowed to heal for 4-6 months then they are restored with crowns. The trend in dentistry today is to try and prevent unnecessary extractions thus techniques such as root canals, crown lengthening, post/ core and crowns are usually recommended with extractions been the last resort. However if extractions are unavoidable then dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth and give much more chewing power than dentures. With the many types of teeth replacement available today it is amazing that many people are walking around with their mouth filled with rotted teeth. Recent cardiac studies have shown a close link between the bacteria that cause gum disease and those found in certain types of cardiac diseases, thus taking care of your teeth may eventually allow you to live a longer and healthier live.

Fighting The

F

Most Common Foot Woes

rom eating better foods to getting an adequate amount of sleep and exercise, we’re a very healthaware society.

So why is it that many Americans routinely overlook one of the cornerstones of good health? While nearly 70 percent of Americans say they want to be healthier five years from now, just 51 percent recognize that foot health can be a key to achieving that goal, according to a survey from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “Nearly eight in 10 adults have experienced some type of foot ailment in their lives. Yet despite the pain, close to three in 10 do nothing about it, simply choosing to live with their pain,” says Dr. Michael King, a podiatrist and president of APMA. “Meanwhile, more than half of those surveyed said they had endured foot pain at some point in their lives but have not sought treatment from a podiatrist.” So what are the five most common types of foot problems and what causes them? Here

Health Always dial 911 in case of emergency

are some tips from today’s podiatrists: * Nail problems are one of the most prevalent foot woes in both men and women. These problems can range from ingrown toenails to fungal infections. Ingrown toenails - a condition in which the corners of sides of a nail dig painfully into the soft tissue of the nail grooves - is the most common form of nail problem. To avoid ingrown toenails, trim nails straight across and don’t dig into the corners. If a toenail becomes infected, see a podiatrist immediately for treatment. Those with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and other circulatory disorders should seek a podiatrist’s care on a regular basis to help prevent complications. * Sweaty feet and foot odor are two foot conditions that are often experienced together. While stinky feet are definitely embarrassing, feet that sweat excessively can lead to other foot problems, even creating an environment conducive to the development of athlete’s foot. Closed shoes make feet sweat, but in the winter you can’t avoid wearing them. Instead, practice good foot hygiene. Wash feet daily with soap and water, keep shoes and socks dry, and choose socks that wick away moisture. Change shoes and socks regularly and consider rubbing

cornstarch or applying antiperspirant directly onto the soles of your feet. * Pain in the ball of the feet - Nearly onethird of adults have reported pain in the balls of their feet. Pain in this location can be caused by over-exertion, injury or ill-fitting shoes. To avoid, always wear well-fitting, supportive and activity-appropriate shoes when walking, running or engaging in other physical activity. If necessary, replace the insoles that came in the shoes with ones that provide additional cushioning. * Heel pain - This type of pain can have many sources, including weight gain, excessive foot flattening, muscle imbalance, injury or even improper footwear. To kick heel pain to the curb, always be sure to warm up and stretch properly before and after exercise. If wearing high heels, opt for heels that are no more than two to three inches in height. For persistent pain, treatment can range from prescribed orthotic devices and medications to cortisone injections, physical therapy and rarely, surgery. * Bunions - A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe. Treatments range from self-remedies such as using a bunion pad around the bony prominence, to ice packs to reduce the swelling, and avoiding shoes that could irritate the bunion and even make the problem worse. For persistent pain, see a podiatrist for a full range of treatment options. “While foot problems are common, that doesn’t mean people should be resigned to living with pain,” King says. “Consulting today’s podiatrist can help people feel better sooner, and get back to living healthier lives.”

Don’t Miss A Beat In 2012: Get The Facts About Fats And Heart Health

W

ith heart disease the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s time to listen to your heart and get the right kinds of fats into your daily diet. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends consuming polyunsaturated fats, specifically omega-3 fatty acids, for heart health. But what are these “good fats” and how do you make them a part of your daily nutrition program? “Hundreds of studies from prestigious groups like the National Institutes of Health and universities like Harvard and Tufts, repeatedly and consistently show that when you add

omega-3-rich foods or supplements to the diet, you help to lower your risk for heart disease,” says Elizabeth Somer, a registered dietitian and author of “Eat Your Way to Sexy.” “One important step is making sure your diet is packed with hearthealthy omega-3s,” she added. “The omega-3s in fatty fish, especially DHA, keep blood vessels squeaky clean and reduce inflammation. They lower heart disease risk; raise HDLs - the good cholesterol; help stabilize the heartbeat and reduce blood clots, thereby curbing the risk for heart attack and stroke.” Somer answers some questions about heart health: Q: What are the main differences between “good fats” and “bad fats?” A: We often hear that Americans eat too much fat, while people in other parts of the world aren’t eating enough. The truth is that, regardless of fat intake, very few people are eating the right fats. Fats to avoid

are saturated and trans fats, which are solid at room temperature - like butter. In contrast, consuming polyunsaturated fatty acids - specifically omega-3s DHA and EPA found in fatty fish - are important for brain, eye and cardiovascular health. Q: Doesn’t my body make all of the omega-3s needed to help maintain a strong heart? A: Many experts have indicated that the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are essential nutrients due to the limited ability of our body to make enough of them and because of their beneficial health effects. That’s why we must get these nutrients from the foods we eat and supplements. The main dietary source of DHA and EPA is cold-water fish, such as salmon. Unfortunately, studies show the American diet includes far less than the ideal amount of DHA and EPA. For example, an average U.S. diet contains less than 100 milligrams of DHA per day. That is well below one expert’s recommendation of at

least 220 milligrams of DHA per day. Studies show that the more omega3s you consume, the healthier your heart. Q: What if I don’t like eating fish - are there other ways to get DHA and EPA into my diet? A: The most common sources of DHA and EPA omega-3s are fatty fish and fish oil. Interestingly, many people believe that fish produce their own DHA and EPA, but in actuality it is the microalgae in their food chain

that make fish such a rich source of omega-3s. For those who do not eat significant amounts of fish due to dietary preferences, allergies, a vegetarian lifestyle or worries about potential ocean-borne pollutants, there are DHA/EPA supplements made from algae. One such supplement is Schiff MegaRed Plant-Omega, which is made from a vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA and EPA - algae. To learn more, visit www.schiffmegared.com. Q: How much DHA/EPA should I get in my diet? A: If you’re not getting at least two servings a week of salmon, mackerel, herring or sardines, and you’re not loading foods fortified with an algal-based DHA onto your plate, then make sure to take at least 220 milligrams of DHA in pill form. According to the American Heart Association, people with documented coronary heart disease (CHD) are advised to consume about one gram of EPA and DHA per day.

Tax Tip: What To Do If

education

You Are Missing A W-2

M

ake sure you have all the needed documents, including all your Forms W-2, before you file your 2011 tax return. You should receive an IRS Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, from each of your employers. Employers have until Jan. 31, 2012 to issue your 2011 Form W-2 earnings statement. If you haven’t received your W-2, follow these four steps: 1.Contact your employer If you have not received your W-2, contact your employer to inquire if and when the W-2 was mailed. If it was mailed, it may have been returned to the employer because of an incorrect or incomplete address. After contacting the employer, allow a reasonable amount of time for them to resend or issue the W-2. 2.Contact the IRS If you do not receive your W-2 by Feb. 14, contact the IRS for assistance at 800829-1040. When you call, you must provide your name, address, Social Security number, phone number and have the following information: •Employer’s name, address and phone number •Dates of employment •An estimate of the wages you earned, the federal income tax withheld, and when you worked for that employer

during 2011. The estimate should be based on year-to-date information from your final pay stub or leave-andearnings statement, if possible. 3.File your return You still must file your tax return or request an extension to file by April 17, 2012, even if you do not receive your Form W-2. If you have not received your Form W-2 in time to file your return by the due date, and have completed steps 1 and 2, you may use Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement. Attach Form 4852 to the return, estimating income and withholding taxes as accurately as possible. There may be a delay in any refund due while the information is verified. 4.File a Form 1040X On occasion, you may receive your missing W-2 after you file your return using Form 4852, and the information may be different from what you reported on your return. If this happens, you must amend your return by filing a Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

Tips For Recently Married Or Divorced Taxpayers With Name Change

I

f you changed your name after a recent marriage or divorce, the IRS reminds you to take the necessary steps to ensure the name on your tax return matches the name registered with the Social Security Administration. A mismatch between the name shown on your tax return and the SSA records can cause problems in the processing of your return and may even delay your refund. Here are five tips from the IRS for recently married or divorced taxpayers who have a name change. 1. If you took your spouse’s last name -- or if you hyphenated your last names, you may run into complications if you don’t notify the SSA. When newlyweds file a tax return using their new last names, IRS computers can’t match the new name with their Social Security number. 2. If you recently divorced and changed back to your previous last name, you’ll also need to notify the SSA of this name change. 3. Informing the SSA of a name change is easy. Simply file a Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, at your local SSA office or by mail and provide a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. 4. Form SS-5 is available on SSA’s website at http://www.socialsecurity. gov/, by calling 800-772-1213 or at local offices. Your new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name. 5. If you adopted your spouse’s children after getting married and their names changed, you’ll need to update their names with SSA too. For adopted children without SSNs, the parents can apply for an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number – or ATIN – by filing Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions with the IRS. The ATIN is a temporary number used in place of an SSN on the tax return. Form W-7A is available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

RN’s Urged To Pursue Bachelor’s Degrees

s many industries scaled back and cut resources in the last year, health care continued to grow, adding an average of 26,000 jobs per month, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This trend is likely to continue as technological innovations and new regulations prompt additional oversight within the health care setting. In order to meet the needs of this increasingly complex health care system, industry leaders, such as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), recommend an increase in the proportion of nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from 50 percent to 80 percent by 2020. With these additional skills, registered nurses (RNs) will be prepared to deliver high-quality patient care and, as the IOM recommends, become partners with physicians and other health care professionals in redesigning health care in the United States. Some schools of nursing offer specialized nursing degree programs that help meet this call to action. Chamberlain College of Nursing, for example, offers an on-

line degree completion option that allows RNs to earn their BSN in as few as three semesters - as opposed to traditional three- or four-year nursing programs - without altering their current work schedule. With the flexibility of online learning, completing a BSN degree is an attractive investment for RNs. “Nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree have additional training in leadership, health policy, research, teamwork, collaboration and other skills that are integral to the successful function of many health care roles,” says Dr. Margi Wheeler, a registered nurse and dean of the RN-BSN online degree option at Chamberlain College of Nursing. “That type of advanced education positions nurses as more viable job candidates for managerial roles such as nursing director, clinical nurse manager or nurse practitioner, for example.” RNs who earn their BSN degree can be qualified for nursing

positions in private practices, hospitals, surgical centers and nursing homes and have greater upward mobility, whether they aspire to enter management, training, director or facilitator positions. RN-BSN graduates are also one step closer to master’s degree status, which can open doors to higher levels of health care leadership. “Nurses can and should play an integral role in the health care system’s transformation,” says Wheeler. “Working together and encouraging each other to pursue advanced degrees, we can help to provide safer care that is accessible to all and leads to a healthier population.” Nurses are being called upon to fill new roles in the health care setting. From harnessing new technologies and information management systems to collaborating across teams of health care professionals, nurses are expanding their presence and the traditional definition of the profession. To continue to advance the role of the nurse and meet the needs of an evolving industry, nurses must achieve higher levels of education that allow them to elevate the profession and to better serve patient needs nationwide.

Finally, Real Optimism and Support for ...

Young Black Men in America By Phillip Jackson

social indicators predict a short, miserable life

W

elcome to America where too many young Black men live short, desperate, miserable, complicated and violent lives. Recently a young Black man reported to the California General Assembly that the biggest challenge in his life was getting to school safely–not getting good grades or graduating from school, not wearing new clothes or even having a job, but just getting to school unscathed!

Simply staying alive for 21 years is the number-one concern for many young Black men whose actions and inactions are influenced by their dire sense of hopelessness. Seemingly random negative obstacles facing Black males in America constitute nothing less than a well-crafted, highly orchestrated sys-

tem of mass destruction for young Black men and boys. Black men and boys are at the bottom of the educational system and the top of the criminal justice system. Their life expectancy and health indicators are the lowest in America and they top the homicide and violent-injury statistics throughout the nation. Black males also rank at the bottom in high-school and college-graduation rates and at the top of the official and unofficial unemployment rates. All social indicators in America predict a short, miserable life for those unlucky enough to be born Black males in America. To what extent do Americans know and care enough to stop this systematic genocide? Here are three points of optimism for young Black men that you should know: 1) Red Tails is a movie produced by George Lucas of Star Wars fame. It features young Black men as great patriots and American heroes who are intelligent, confident, disciplined and courageous. Ordinarily, these are traits lauded in America, but apparently not so much when they are displayed by African American men. It took Mr. Lucas 23 years to make this film, a film that Hollywood would not finance, support or distribute. He eventually used his own money to produce and distribute it. Red Tails should be required viewing, with a day away from classrooms, for every high school student in America because exposure to its soFrom Page 7

cial and historical lessons, not taught in school, will 1) influence and help transform Black boys into strong, positive, productive Black men, 2) help America appreciate the value of young Black men and 3) teach all Americans to be great patriots in our country. 2) The New Jim Crow, a recent book by Michelle Alexander, has become an instant classic and staple for college undergraduate and graduate classes in law, political science, sociology and history nationwide. It peels back the layers of modern, systematic racism that have led to more Black men in America being imprisoned in 2011 than there were Black people enslaved in America in 1850. A new “caste” system of racial control also has more Black men imprisoned in the United States today than the combined number of people imprisoned in every other country worldwide. Yet there is optimism with the release of the paperback edition of The New Jim Crow. People throughout the world must read this book because of its truth, passion, impatience, importance and power– like that found in such works as “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and “Why We Can’t Wait” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Every high school and college around the world should make The New Jim Crow required reading for its students as a guide away from policies, programs and practices that render America a horrifically unjust and hypocritical

place. 3) And finally, there is hope in the Black Male Achievement Movement, inspired by Open Society Foundations’ Campaign for Black Male Achievement, which has helped organize thousands of Black men in 100 cities across America to address the issues that confront young Black men and boys every day in every city in America. The men in this movement work in a concerted manner to produce comprehensive, well-thought out, workable solutions to the problems Black males face in America. In January and February 2012, the Black Male Achievement Movement will mentor tens of thousands of young Black men and boys as a step toward improving their life chances. Black men will teach Black boys how to build strong families, value and pursue education, start businesses in their communities, become better men of faith and abstain from negative behaviors that destroy our communities. The problems that confront Black males in America are American problems. While the actions of Black men must lead the way to fixing these problems, the courage and integrity of multitudes of Americans is essential. We must realize, as stated in promotion materials for the movie Red Tails, “Courage has no color.” Let’s get to work making America great for all of us and let’s invest in hope, cooperative action and opportunity for young Black men!

Instructions Preheat oven at 300 F. For mixture 1: Sift the almond flour with the confectioners’ sugar, stir until combined, set aside. Stir the red color into the egg whites. Add the colored egg whites to the almond flour and confectioners’ sugar, set aside covered with plastic. For mixture 2: In mixer bowl, or in a stainless steel mixing bowl, start whisking the egg whites slowly. Mix the granulated sugar with water in a pot, set on stove to boil. When the syrup reaches 238 F., remove from stove. Start whisking the egg whites on high speed, add the syrup slowly in a steady stream onto the egg whites. Let mixture whip for four minutes. When mixture is done, it should be dense, glossy, very similar to a marshmallow. Fold in 1/3 of mixture 2, into mixture 1, making sure the mixture looks homogenous. Fold in the rest of mixture 2 into mixture 1, folding a little more energetically. Put this mixture in piping bag with a round tip. On a parchment paper, draw heart shapes, spacing them out evenly to facilitate heat circulation in oven. This will be used as a stencil. Place another sheet of parchment on top. Pipe the mixture following the traced heart, making sure not to pipe too thick in order to preserve that heart shape. Start with the outside of the heart, finishing with the inside of the heart. Let set at room temperature approximately 30 minutes until a “skin” is formed on the macaron. Bake in the preheated oven, making sure to leave the door of the oven partially opened for the first 13 minutes of the baking process. Close the door after 13 minutes are up and bake another 10 minutes. Rotate. Bake another eight - 12 minutes depending on macaroon size. They should be set up, not moving at all on the sheet and with no extra color. Let cool one hour. The macaron should gently come off the paper and be slightly moist in the center. To finish the dessert, you will need two macaroon shells. Place one upside down; start placing fresh raspberries on the edges, trim them if necessary to make them sit straight. Fill the inside with a good quality jam of your choice. Place the other side of the macaroon on top of the raspberries. Decorate with a fresh rose petal (organic preferably), and a fresh raspberry. Serve with a good quality vanilla ice cream and a raspberry sauce.

Out-Of-The-Chocolate-Box Ideas For

Valentine’s Day Treats

V

alentine’s Day usually brings to mind a box of chocolates for your sweetheart. As delicious as solid milk chocolate hearts and raspberry creams are, how about something a little different this year?

Matthieu Chamussy, certified executive pastry chef and chef instructor in the Baking & Pastry Program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California - Inland Empire, suggests a wonderfully French confection for this Valentine’s Day: the macaron. Not to be confused with the shredded coconut dessert macaroons, macarons have become increasingly popular stateside. Some news articles say it may be overtaking the cupcake as the “au courant” “must-have confection.” If you search online for macaron gift boxes you can find a number of options ranging from $20 for a dozen to $90 for 35 from a high-end retailer. If you want to try making your own meringue-based treat, Chef Chamussy offers up his recipe below for pink, heart-shaped macarons encircled with raspberries for this Valentine’s Day. Chamussy, born and raised in Paris, learned the art of bread and confection making from his grandfather early on and had the opportunity to learn from the prominent French pastry chef Francois Payard. Since then, Chamussy has worked all over the world including Paris, New York and Los Angeles.

When trying out the recipe, Colleen Johnson, lead instructor in the Baking and Pastry Program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California - Orange County, advises “macarons look fairly simple, but there are a lot of tricks that you will learn with practice. “Let your egg whites sit out at room temperature for 48 hours. I like to use a ceramic bowl and put a cloth over my whites. I also suggest grinding your almond flour and powdered sugar really well in a food processor, and then sifting it,” add Johnson, who also teaches a “Mastering Macarons” course at a cookware retailer in Costa Mesa, Calif. “For my baking and pastry students at The Art Institute of California - Orange County, I like to have them check out a YouTube video about the macarons of renowned pastry chef Pierre Herme. It’s in French, but the video shows you how the ingredients come together,” says Johnson. Even if your first attempt at baking macarons is imperfect, Johnson mentions that presentation is another important element of the culinary arts. “Proper presentation and plating can make even the tiniest morsel of dessert seem sumptuous and something to be savored,” she says. For a plated dessert like heart-shaped macarons: “I like clean lines and color. So I would say a pink macaron would look simply great on a white plate,” she says. “Or, if you want to give your treats as a gift, I’d put them in long, thin cellophane tube and tie both ends with a lovely ribbon.” Another great way to make this dessert even more special is to serve it with a glass of champagne, prosecco or cava, adds Chamussy.

Competing indoors for the first time in eight years, the 29-year-old Powell was clocked at 5.64 while Carter was just behind in 5.67. Twenty-one year-old Jamaican Kimmari Roach finished fifth in 5.74 seconds while Antiguan Daniel Bailey was last in 5.75 seconds. Campbell-Brown, the reigning Olympic and World 200 meters champion, joined Powell in winners’ row as she streaked to victory over her field in the women’s equivalent. The Jamaican touched the tape in 6.08 seconds, beating American Jessica Young (6.20) into second. “This is a step in the right direction. Now I have to get back to training. Hopefully this is a preview of what is to come,” CampbellBrown said.
