Pretium Partners congratulates

Jana Beauchamp on being named a 2015 New York Junior League Outstanding Volunteer.

Dear Friends: Welcome to the New York Junior League’s (NYJL) 63rd Annual Winter Ball, “Deco and Diamonds: A Jazz Age Affair.” I want to thank you for joining us this evening at The Pierre to support our charitable activities and to celebrate seven wonderful women for their extraordinary volunteer service in our community. Since 1901, the NYJL has been an organization of dedicated women committed to making a difference in New York City. Today, the NYJL’s more than 2,700 volunteers are engaged in diverse activities and community projects undertaken throughout New York City. These programs target four areas of need: Adult Education and Mentoring, Children’s Education, Child Health and Welfare, and Culture and the Arts. Our volunteers impact the community at large through the NYJL’s original signature initiatives, including: •  The Financial Literacy program, whose volunteers teach individuals to address financial concerns and gain financial knowledge and skills to ensure long-term stability for themselves and their families. •  The Community Health Access Model Program (CHAMP), which presents preventative health education programs to the New York City community at large. •  The Playground Improvement Project, which revitalizes and beautifies neglected playgrounds and parks in New York City neighborhoods. •  The Community Improvement Project, our newest signature project, where through a one-year partnership with a Manhattan-based nonprofit organization, volunteers help enhance and revitalize the organization’s space and bring vital programming to assist them in increasing their community impact. •  The Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse course, which trains participants to be effective Board Members on nonprofit boards and introduces them to dynamic New York City nonprofit agencies through a structured placement process. •  The Forum for Nonprofits, which presents an annual “Conference on Volunteerism” for invitees from nonprofit organizations and other members of the New York community at large. In addition, NYJL volunteers work with more than 20 different community partners to serve our target areas of need, including the Andrew Glover Youth Program, Boys and Girls Harbor, Covenant House, English Speaking Union, Good Shepherd Services, Jennie A. Clarke Residence, Little Orchestra Society, Mentoring USA, Mott Haven Academy Charter School, Nazareth House, New YorkPresbyterian Hospital, P.S. 64, Supportive Children’s Advocacy Network, the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center and Women’s Prison Association. This year we are proud to honor our Outstanding Sustainers — Catherine C. Crane and Peggy Anne Dineen— and Outstanding Volunteers — Jana Beauchamp, Sharon Bonanni, Allison Marie Hyers, Cynthia Vitari Song and Leah Wenger—for their significant and sustained volunteer work at the NYJL and the community at large. I encourage you to read about their inspiring contributions in the following pages of this journal. These seven women have worked to continue the vision of 19-year-old New Yorker Mary Harriman, who in 1901 organized a group of young women to give their time and talents to ensure that newly arriving immigrants would find New York City a better place to live. These visionaries gave birth to the Junior League of New York City—the very first Junior League in an organization that has grown to 292 Junior Leagues worldwide. On behalf of the NYJL Board of Directors and Management Council, our volunteers and our Community Partners, I thank you for your generosity this evening. Your support is vital to the NYJL’s ongoing contributions to this great city. Sincerely,

Stacey Lawrence Lee

OUTSTANDING SUSTAINERS

Outstanding Sustainer

Catherine C. Crane

was told that there was no way that the NYJL could identify and recommend a person for her board. She knew that the talent and the willingness to contribute to the community was there in NYJL volunteers. Why couldn’t her board have access to that?”

atherine C. Crane was first introduced to the Junior League in Stamford, Connecticut, when she “came out” at their Debutante Ball at the age of 16. Following college and a few years living in Boston, London and Paris, she transferred to the New York Junior League. As an active NYJL volunteer, Cathy was involved in a number of committees including a children’s art program at the Stanley Isaacs Center, the Early Childhood Development Center and the Mayor’s Action Center committee, which answered complaint phone calls at City Hall.

Everyone at the session agreed with her, and thus the NPBC was born. Following the creation of the training program, Cathy and her fellow volunteers began reaching out to local nonprofits to determine what their needs were. The committee then recommended and placed trained volunteers who could fill those gaps.

Cathy is credited as the founder of the Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse (NPBC) committee, an idea that was born out of a “Speak Up” session that Cathy hosted in 1990 when she was the Sustainer Committee chair.

As Sustainer Chair, Cathy also initiated the “Caring for Aging Parents and Friends” support group, which invited an expert in the field to come speak to the group each month. She ran this group for more than 10 years. With pleasure, Cathy supported the creation of a Sustainer Affiliation group, which focused on sharing cultural activities and sociable meals.

“One woman, a former NYJL volunteer came to express her exasperation,” Cathy remembers. “She was serving on a not-for-profit board that needed a new member. Having volunteered for many years at the NYJL, she knew that Junior League women cared about the community and were well-trained volunteers. So she called to ask for names of potential board members for her organization. She

“I loved being Sustainer Chair, and soliciting ideas from all Sustainers to enrich our program,” Cathy says. “When someone came up with an idea, I would encourage them, support them, and then put them in charge, which got people both excited and engaged.” 14

“ We can bring our minds, hands and hearts to address a community need, free from monetary or political self-interest. This means we are free to be innovative and creative problem-solvers. Also working with other NYJL volunteers on a shared mission is a beautiful bonding experience.”

the New Canaan Country School and Rosemary Hall as well as organizing a panel discussion for her Smith College 50th class reunion.

Beyond the NYJL, Cathy is an active member of The City Gardens Club of New York City. Its programs are designed to foster an appreciation of nature, especially among young people and to encourage the preservation, restoration and creation of green spaces throughout the city. Since 1994, Cathy has served as a Board and Advisory Board member of the organization, taking on titles including Nominating Committee Chairman, Program Chairman, and Hostess Chairman. She is currently serving as the Facilitator of the Planning Task Force which is responsible for planning the organization’s Centennial Celebration in 2018.

“I think the NYJL helped me take responsibility at a young age,” Cathy remarks. “That built my confidence to take on challenges and keep growing.” Cathy’s varied career includes being a magazine editor, writing and publishing three interior design books, including one called “What Do You Say to a Naked Room.” She designed a consumer education program for the W & J Sloane furniture stores, taught at the Learning Annex, and acted as a media spokesperson for 3M and Deck the Walls, a picture framing company. During a nationwide speaking tour, she was even interviewed by a young Oprah Winfrey who was working as a co-anchor on a local television show.

“Cathy has a wonderful flair to her,” says NYJL Sustainer Cook Brogan. “She is a superb mentor to others and her warm personality and enthusiasm makes everyone around her feel proactively engaged, encouraged, and welcomed.”

In her free time, Cathy enjoys going to the theater and the opera, playing bridge, studying Spanish, and traveling.

Cathy is also a former Board member of Service Programs for Older People, an organization that offers mental health services to the elderly, along with other programming. While on the board, Cathy recruited a number of other board members from the NYJL, one of whom has now become the current Board President. Loyal to her schools, Cathy planned and organized her 50th reunions for both

“NYJL volunteers have a great opportunity to be creative in addressing the problems of their community,” Cathy observes. “Keep this your focus.” 15

Peggy Anne Dineen eggy Anne Dineen applauds the NYJL for its organized structure with many volunteer and training opportunities as well as for providing an atmosphere to develop lifelong friendships. Since joining the NYJL in 1986, Peggy Anne has been a living embodiment of that statement. Peggy Anne has served as a Community Area Manager and a Community Vice President on the former Board of Managers and from 1996-1998 she served as the President of the NYJL. She has served on the Nominating committee twice and is a past Thanksgiving Eve Ball co-chair. Currently Peggy Anne serves on the Thanksgiving Eve Ball committee as an advisory member.

“In conjunction with the Children’s Aid Society, the NYJL formed the Milbank Housing Development Fund Inc., (MHDF) and refurbished three dilapidated buildings in East Harlem,” Peggy Anne recalls. “This became the Pelham Fritz Apartments for formerly homeless families. When the apartments were ready, we outfitted them with, among other things, furniture, bedding, linens and kitchen equipment and opened to the first families in early 1990. I served for a number of years as an NYJL representative on the Board of MHDF and proudly saw more than 1,000 families pass through our doors to permanent housing.”

Among her most memorable experiences, Peggy Anne fondly remembers her first placement on the Committee on Homelessness; where she later went on to chair its Advocacy sub-committee.

In 1994, Peggy Anne was honored for her commitment to the NYJL as an Outstanding Volunteer. Peggy Anne is thankful to the NYJL for helping her develop leadership skills, which she has taken and used to help build the reach of other community groups. For more than 15 years, Peggy Anne has served on the Board of Health Advocates for

Peggy Anne holds a B.A. from Marymount College Tarrytown, where she graduated cum laude with highest distinction in Political Science, as well as a J.D. from the Fordham University School of Law. A retired attorney, Peggy Anne began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens County and went on to hold various positions with the New York City Department of Investigation, including Inspector General of several agencies and Director of the Bureau of City Marshals.

She was also a Charter Member of the Advisory Council of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, co-chairing their first and second annual House Tours. Additionally, Peggy Anne is a former Board member on the Town of Southampton Board of Ethics. Further work on the East End included vice-chairing the Family Counseling Service’s Gala and co-chairing the Southampton Hospital Memorial Party. Currently, Peggy Anne is a member of the Westhampton Women’s Club.

“The future of the NYJL is a bright one,” Peggy Anne notes. “We continue to thrive on our 114-year tradition of service to our community, always vigilant to identify and address emerging needs and issues. We also continue to attract the talented and dedicated volunteers who are so essential to our mission.”

OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS

Outstanding Volunteer

Jana Beauchamp or more than a decade, Jana Beauchamp has established herself as a volunteer who is committed to teaching the next generation of New Yorkers to be confident, creative thinkers. She provided an outlet for positive change to at-risk children and teenagers through the performing arts, helped children to build their confidence through arts education, and improved the greater New York City community by overseeing the signature Playground Improvement Project.

F

Inspired by these efforts, Jana turned her attention to the Artistic Journeys committee, helping to change the committee’s arts and crafts-based structure into one that focused on art history and education. In 2009, Jana oversaw the creation of the Stanley Isaacs committee, which combined Artistic Journeys and Beacon to Broadway, a drama and dance education based committee at Stanley Isaacs, into one “super committee.”

Jana began volunteering with the NYJL on the Performance of a Lifetime (POAL) committee, which exposes children to live musical and theatrical performances. In her first year as chair Jana organized a 25th Anniversary concert and celebration for the Boys and Girls Harbor, gathering students past and present, NYJL leaders, and community leadership. For the next three years, Jana led POAL by revamping the committee and expanding the student experience.

“Jana’s genuine enthusiasm for bettering the community is what makes her an amazing volunteer,” says former Youth Education Council Head Justine Oddo. “She never hesitates to help out others wherever she can and her ability to take what is already established and make it better is why other volunteers truly enjoy working with her.”

“After working with one single performance venue partner for many years, we mobilized our committee to reach out to new and diverse venues, substantially growing our partnerships and establishing relationships with landmark NYC institutions such as Carnegie Hall,” Jana notes. “We added an educational element where we had pre- or post-performance activities to tie our lessons and the performance together.”

In 2011, Jana further developed the NYJL’s community programming when she joined the Research & Strategic Planning committee as the Youth Education liaison. That role, paired with a placement as the Youth Education Council Associate, helped to prepare Jana to join the Management Council in 2013 as the Culture & the Arts Council Head. While on the Management Council, Jana worked to create and implement one of the first-ever impact measurement programs in the 20

“ I am fortunate to have influenced and be influenced by others in the NYJL. By immersing myself in the community, I learned that opening your heart and mind to those we volunteer with is a simple gift but one of the best gifts you can give. The community we touch inspires and gives back even more.”

NYJL. Jana initiated tracking and measuring the impact of our community programs by enlisting a sampling of our long-term community partners to take part in a pilot project that provided data to document the marked impact of the volunteer work we do with youth populations across all participating Culture and the Arts committees. Based on its success, the study is currently being expanded.

person achieve her highest potential.”

Under her leadership, she was delighted to have the NYJL recognized as the first group honoree of the Shining Star Award from the Stanley Isaacs Center. Also while serving on the Management Council, Jana managed the 23rd Playground Improvement Project and a community partner collaboration to paint a ground mural in the playground area by the students in the NYJL Project Muse program at PS 64. The students’ artistic inspiration and creativity led to the bright and colorful mural that now graces the park.

Professionally, Jana spent nearly a decade in the Membership, Corporate, and International Department at the Council on Foreign Relations. She put a pause on her foreign policy career to pursue her passion for writing and is a columnist for New York Family Magazine.

Several other organizations benefit from Jana’s experience, including her alma mater, Duke University, CCFA New York, One to World, and the Epiphany Community Nursery School. She is also a member of the Young Professionals in Foreign Policy and Women’s Foreign Policy groups.

Having recently welcomed her second daughter, Jana treasures special family moments. “My husband is incredible, loving and supportive and our daughters, Elle and Kyli, are the center of our universe. It is important to me to value every second with our family and appreciate all that we have.” Jana feels the NYJL is similar, “The NYJL family is a community of strong women working together and sharing incredible experiences that we treasure through our volunteerism and giving back to our great city.”

Currently, Jana is the Community Senior Management Council Head overseeing all of the NYJL’s community areas and is on the Board of Directors Strategic Planning committee. “Jana truly is someone who leads by example,” notes Beth Batiuchok who serves as Jana’s Management Council Associate. “She is consistently setting those around her up for success, helping each 21

haron Bonanni’s first taste of community service happened as a child growing up in Michigan where she and her sisters, who all played the accordion, would entertain at local organizations. “I loved performing, seeing the audience smiling and feeling that I was bringing a little joy to someone’s day,” she remembers. Sharon gravitated to the community area after joining the NYJL in 2003 at the suggestion of her friend, NYJL Sustainer Justine Oddo. She first served on the Artistic Journeys committee and then on the Performance of a Lifetime (POAL) committee, which she co-chaired in 2007. While serving as a vice-chair on POAL, which presents at-risk children with the opportunity to attend live performances, Sharon remembers the committee’s chair, fellow Outstanding Volunteer Jana Beauchamp, encouraging volunteers to be innovative. So Sharon began to seek out culturally diverse shows and develop interactive experiences for the children, ranging from a meet and greet with an orchestra conductor to backstage tours of theaters—a strategy that POAL still utilizes today.

with them. I could see how we not only opened their eyes to a whole new world of creative expression, but also how important we made them feel by simply listening and talking to them about their daily lives.” Following POAL, Sharon moved to the NYJL communications area. “As a writer and editor, I felt this was the best way for me to contribute to the NYJL mission,” she notes. She spent seven years in roles including co-chair of the Publications committee, External Communications Associate and Internal Communications Associate, a position that she filled from 2010 through 2013. As an Internal Communications Associate, Sharon was instrumental in the revamping of the “NYJL Minute” print newsletter as well as the former “Up to the Minute” online newsletter. Additionally, she also assisted with the creation and development of the “Friday Flash” weekly e-blast.

“Sharon is passionate about the NYJL and always approached communications projects with an innovative and loving perspective,” notes former Internal Communications Council Head and current Sharon recalls, “The students had a more well-rounded educational Board of Directors Secretary Colleen Caden. “She has been the experience and the volunteers were able to spend more time interacting woman behind the words so many volunteers have enjoyed reading 22

“ Sharing my professional skills with an organization that I care so deeply about has been incredibly rewarding. I have been able to communicate so many wonderful stories about the important work we do, while challenging myself to take on leadership roles and learn new skills. I have always felt supported by the many talented, compassionate women I have met along the way.”

over the years in NYJL publications and hearing at countless NYJL events. From creating the popular “Friday Flash” to writing feature stories in the “NYJL Minute” to crafting speeches for Fall Fête and Winter Ball, Sharon has kept volunteers updated and inspired by what we do.” In addition to her role as Internal Communications Associate, in 2012 Sharon was also named to the Communications Task Force, which was responsible for evaluating the NYJL’s communications practices and eventually led to the NYJL’s redesigned website launch in November 2014. As a member of the Task Force, Sharon assisted in the creation of copy for the site as well as the development of the NYJL’s identity statement. “Sharon executes everything with excellence,” says Kim Essency Pillari, who volunteered with Sharon in the communications area. “She has a flair for bringing our stories to life and her varied NYJL experiences make her incredibly adept at expressing what we do.” Beyond her NYJL community and communications experience, Sharon has taken on other organizational leadership roles, such as serving on the Nominating committee in 2009, and her current

position as Secretary of the NYJL Management Council. “Sharon is that dream volunteer who just makes everything easy,” says Past President Lisa Hathaway Stella. “The answer ‘no’ is not in her vocabulary and she does the ‘hard stuff ’ with a smile. She is patient, but gently persistent to ensure that everything is done with the NYJL’s best interest in mind.” Sharon has a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Michigan, and has spent her career in the cosmetics and fashion magazine industries. She is currently a global marketing copywriter for Avon Products, Inc. She and her husband, Tom, live in New York City. Running, traveling, exploring new restaurants, and studying wines (she has an Advanced Certificate from the International Wine Center) are among her hobbies. “I think the NYJL will continue to thrive, because our volunteers never stop challenging themselves,” Sharon remarks. “They are always looking for new ways to improve the lives of women and children in New York City. They tackle projects that may seem insurmountable, yet always succeed because they are expertly trained and genuinely support each other.” 23

Following placements and leadership roles across the NYJL Training, Community and Support areas on such committees as Golden Tree, Advocates for Public Policy, Empowering Young Mothers, Provisional Training, and NYJL Boutique, Allison received the opportunity to co-chair the Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse (NPBC) committee.

In 2013, Allison was invited to join the Training and Leadership Task Force, which focused on growing the NYJL’s reach as a training organization to help further provide strong training opportunities to volunteers. There she was able to provide valuable insights, guidance and actions to support this key initiative.

“When I saw the opportunity to co-chair NPBC it spoke to me on a couple of different fronts. First, I knew that I could contribute

This year, Allison is co-chairing the Forum for Nonprofits committee, which creates and delivers an annual one day conference for NYJL volunteers and external nonprofit professionals. 24

“ I am passionate about half of the world population, women, and their ability to progress the human condition and ease suffering through education, through giving and through caring. The NYJL is a great organization because it provides a platform for me and the people I care about to deliver on these values.”

“Allison is a strong leader but she also does a great job at inspiring others to lead and take ownership of projects,” says Courtney Guzman, Membership Senior Council Head, who served as treasurer of the Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse committee under Allison’s leadership. “She really does a great job at bringing out the best in other people and helping them to achieve their fullest potential.” As mentioned, Allison is actively involved in the GlamourGals Foundation, whose mission is to inspire and organize teen volunteers to provide ongoing companionship and complimentary beauty makeovers to women living in senior homes. Allison is a former Advisory Board Chairwoman, and today continues to be an active member of the Advisory Board, working alongside the President and the founder of the organization participating in board task forces. “It has been a tremendous validation to take what I’ve learned from the NYJL, which is so similar, and apply it to this new burgeoning organization which is now a mere 10 years old by comparison,” Allison remarks.

In her spare time, Allison loves to try new recipes from her monthly “Bon Appétit” subscription and she, along with her husband Campbell, enjoys hosting “Sunday Suppers” in which family and friends come by to catch up while trying new recipes. She is also a voracious reader and an active participant in her monthly book club as well as the former leader of the NYJL Affiliation Evening Book Group. Professionally, Allison is the Vice President of Talent at West Elm, leading the effort to create a unique culture of inspired and curious associates at their corporate headquarters in Brooklyn. She is a graduate of Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science in Information Studies. “I have seen women in the NYJL, some that are being honored with me and some who have been honored before me, who have had long careers as volunteers and contributors in their communities.” Allison notes. “In looking at those careers, it invigorates my passion by helping me understand that I am very early in my career and in my growth as someone who can contribute to my community both locally and globally. The NYJL is what has allowed me to see, and create a vision for who I can become.” 25

Outstanding Volunteer

Cynthia Vitari Song

F

or Cynthia Vitari Song, her passion for volunteering began at a young age as she observed her parents’ dedication to their community. An active Girl Scout (her mother was her Troop Leader), Cynthia developed a desire to be part of an organization with direct community involvement and the passion to train, develop and promote leadership. In September of 2001, a conversation with a NYJL volunteer inspired Cynthia to begin the Provisional Training Course, and in January of 2002, Cynthia was placed on the Empowerment for Personal Strength committee, which provided domestic violence awareness and self-esteem training for women at the Bayview Correctional Facility as well as teenagers at Covenant House. “I never thought when I joined the NYJL, I’d work with the women and young women who I met in my first committee experience and learn about the situations and experiences that they had survived,” Cynthia remembers. “Hearing them tell their stories and being there as a volunteer and mentor expanded my knowledge of the issues in the community and those specific to women and children in a very real and significant way.”

In 2005, in recognition of her efforts, Cynthia was honored as a NYJL Woman to Watch. Following her time on Empowerment for Personal Strength, which she went on to co-chair, Cynthia helped to develop the College Coaches committee, whose mission was to work with the inmates at Bayview and tutor them for their GEDs. “Working with our NYJL leadership as well as Bayview to organize the program, develop the committee, train our volunteers and work with the women there was transformational,” Cynthia notes. She has also been an active member of the Human Resources Committee since 2004, and was a volunteer on the Nominating Committee in 2007-2008. “Cynthia knows how to react to people and make them feel comfortable,” notes Joan Heath who volunteered with Cynthia on the Bayview committee. “Her enthusiasm adds value to every committee that she is involved with and helps her to set a great example for her fellow volunteers.”

26

“ The New York Junior League provides limitless opportunities for all women to learn from one another, support our community partners, and demonstrate leadership on our committees. We are also given a gift – the responsibility to build and sustain the NYJL through mentoring fellow volunteers and having direct impact with women and children in the community.”

In 2010, Cynthia turned her attention to developing the NYJL’s newest volunteers when she joined the Provisional Training committee. “Watching the development of the women in the Provisional Training course was amazing,” Cynthia remarks. “We really work to help women understand our organization and provide them the knowledge from our experiences with the NYJL, so they can grow and develop on their own path. The talent, dedication, enthusiasm and support they show one another, as well as towards the organization are outstanding.” This year, Cynthia joined the NYJL Board of Directors where she is a Director At-Large and returned to the Human Resources committee as Chair. Cynthia and her husband Doug are the parents of five-year old twins, Lauren and Grant. She is an avid gardener and crafter and has taken courses at both the New York Botanical Garden and the

New York Horticultural Society. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends visiting museums and historic sites, attending plays and musical theater, and participating in a number of sports including skiing, golfing, and hiking. Professionally, Cynthia is a graduate of Boston University and is on the New York Metro Tax Human Capital team at PricewaterhouseCoopers. She credits the NYJL for helping her professionally, noting that her experiences at the NYJL have often provided her with the early leadership opportunities and exposure that have benefitted her career. “You are already part of the future,” Cynthia says, “Learn from the women around you, share experiences, take responsibility, get involved with the community programs the NYJL provides to understand the needs around us and how you can contribute to the success of others who need your support. The experience that you will gain at the NYJL and the leadership around you are like none other.”

Outstanding Volunteer

Leah Wenger

L

eah was first introduced to the NYJL in 2005 through current NYJL volunteer, Laura Norwalk Bendelius, who invited her to the Advocates for Public Policy Forum. While sitting in the audience, Leah remembers being so impressed by the work that the NYJL was doing, shortly afterwards she signed up for the Provisional Training Course. Currently, Leah serves as the Affiliation Council Head. Under Leah’s leadership, the Affiliation area has grown to include a number of Affinity Groups including Culture Club, Run Club, Evening Book Club, and Brooklyn Meet-up Group. Additionally, Affiliation has partnered with multiple committees to foster relationships between councils and to encourage volunteers to engage with those outside their committees. “Leah brings maturity and a sense of fun to everything that she does,” says Mary Cooper, former Affiliation Council Head.

“Her even-keeled personality and ability to roll with the punches make her an excellent leader.” Affiliation has been near and dear to Leah’s heart ever since serving on the Innovation Task Force (ITF). “While serving on the ITF, I heard NYJL volunteers highlight their wish for different types of networking groups and programs that would allow volunteers to meet other volunteers outside of the committee on which they were serving.” In addition to ITF and Affiliation, Leah has served on a number of other support and community committees, including Golden Tree, Public Relations, and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) committee. Serving as a mentor on NFTE, which inspires young people from low-income communities who were interested in entrepreneurship to recognize business opportunities and turn them into reality, was a first-hand example of the impact of the NYJL in the community.

28

“ One of the great things about the NYJL is that the more time and energy I put into the organization, the more I get out of it in return. It provides opportunities for personal growth and a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, all of which helps keeps me grounded and allows me the opportunity to give back to the city I love!”

“My first mentee, Isis, was overflowing with great ideas, but needed direction,” Leah recalls. “We did a lot of market research and combined that with knowledge of her greatest strengths and narrowed her ideas down to one on which she could focus. She ended up creating a successful fashion website for resale clothing, and we both learned valuable lessons about moving beyond one’s comfort zone and pushing oneself to achieve greater success. When I think about this one example and multiply it by all the NYJL volunteers, I realize the remarkable impact we have as an organization overall.” In addition to the NYJL, Leah is involved in a number of other organizations. She is an active member of New York Road Runners, Ellevate, and the Knickerbocker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she has held the past Board roles of Secretary and Treasurer. She is also active

with the Bank of America Foundation, which works with a number of local and national organizations. Professionally, Leah is a Director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where she is responsible for overseeing client engagement strategies for the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer. In her free time, Leah enjoys spending time with her husband Jeff, traveling, seeing Broadway shows, running, reading, movies and sports. “The NYJL continuously provides me with opportunities to learn something new about cooperation, compassion, and about myself,” Leah remarks. “I’m surrounded by intelligent, thoughtful, kind people with great ideas about how to improve themselves, others and the broader community. The NYJL gives us the chance to turn those ideas into reality.”

Mistress of Ceremonies

Kristine Johnson

K

ristine Johnson currently co-anchors the 5 p.m. & 11 p.m. news at the CBS owned and operated station in New York City. She joined CBS 2 in the fall of 2006. Since then, she has been nominated for several Emmy Awards and had the honor of winning seven trophies. Kristine has navigated her viewers through numerous breaking news events. Most recently she logged 10-12-hour days behind the anchor desk covering Hurricane Sandy and the blizzard of 2013. She also covered live stories ranging from Pope Benedict’s visit to the Big Apple to the miracle landing on the Hudson. Kristine has field anchored several historic events, including breaking news coverage from ground zero after the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden and the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks with former President George W. Bush and current President Barack Obama in attendance. She broadcasted live in the days following the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. And she traveled to Boston to broadcast live following the bombings at the Boston Marathon. CBS has called upon Kristine to guest co-host the daytime talk show “The Talk” from time to time. She also played the role of a news anchor (a real stretch!) on episodes of the CBS hit prime time shows “Person of Interest” and “Elementary.”

In 1994, Kristine began her career at WPRI in Providence, R.I. She was hired as a part-time assignment editor. Over the next 10 years she would transition to several positions in the news room, while always keeping her goal of reporting in sight. From the assignment desk she became a writer, later an associate producer, then a producer, reporter, and, ultimately, anchoring the very newscasts she once produced. Kristine left Providence for New York City in 2004. She was hired by MSNBC and anchored daytime coverage. She also served as anchor for NBC’s national broadcast “Early Today.” During that time Kristine also had the honor of appearing on the weekend edition of the “Today Show” as news reader. Kristine resides in northern New Jersey with her husband and their two children. When she’s not juggling her personal and professional duties, Kristine is honored to represent CBS 2 at various events around the Tri-State Area. She’s worked closely with the greater New York chapters of the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure, March of Dimes, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Down Syndrome Society, The Brain Tumor Foundation and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run. 33

Community Impact

In the spring of 2014, the NYJL completed the 23rd Annual Playground Improvement Project in Tompkins Square Park.

T

hrough direct service, collaborations with other community organizations and advocacy, our volunteers provide a positive force for change. Our goal is to strengthen the health and well-being of the children and families of the greater New York area.

45

Adult Education & Mentoring

NYJL Senior Friends volunteers provide companionship and develop engaging activities for the seniors at Jewish Home Lifecare.

T

his council focuses on adult life skills training and support; esteem and self-advocacy; companionship and guidance and providing the participants the tools and resources to be successful. NYJL volunteers counsel and advocate for domestic violence and sexual assault victims in New York City hospitals in partnership with New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Domestic & Other Violence Emergencies program; present workshops focused on goal-setting, housing, job/career search, and finances, through the Women’s Prison Association, prepare recent immigrants for their job search at the English Speaking Union and create friendships with the elderly at the Jewish Home Lifecare.

46

Children’s Education Council

Each spring, the volunteers in the Children’s Education Council participate in Healthy Kid’s Day, the YMCA’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of children.

F

or families who are homeless, headed by a single parent or experiencing other difficulties, the stress of daily life can be overwhelming. NYJL volunteers participate in programs intended to help alleviate some of the pressures faced by today’s families and enable individuals to lead fuller, healthier, and more independent lives. NYJL volunteers work with many established community partners to provide educational support in a variety of disciplines including math, science, art, financial literacy, reading and writing. Working with community partners such as Mott Haven Academy Charter School, and Women in Need, the underlying goal of the Children’s Education Council is to empower parents, guardians and caregivers and to give them the tools that will help them build a positive future for themselves and their families. The NYJL also completes copious episodic projects in conjunction with community partners through our “Done in a Day” programs, such as Hurricane Sandy relief events, food pantry and clothing bank services, along with education, mentoring, and brick and mortar improvements. In addition to these time and talent contributions to the community, the Community Improvement Project creates a one-year partnership with a selected facility to assist the facility in increasing its community impact through a $50,000 capital donation, accompanied by hundreds of volunteer man-hours. 47

Culture & the Arts

Project Muse volunteers work with third grade students at P.S. 64, a New York City elementary school, to provide an interactive art education course.

T

o help bring arts education and appreciation to underserved New York children and teenagers, volunteers participate in a variety of interactive projects designed to encourage self-expression while building confidence and self-esteem. Research shows that exposure to art and music facilitates social and communicative development in children and NYJL volunteers provide these opportunities via robust visual and performing arts curriculums and planning supplemental trips to venues from The Met to Carnegie Hall. For more than 20 years, NYJL volunteers have designed, planned, funded and completed a playground renovation each spring in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Other community partners in this area include P.S. 64, Grosvenor Neighborhood House YMCA, Boys & Girls Harbor, and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center.

New York Junior League volunteers work to teach these young people that challenging life circumstances provide opportunities to learn, grow, and persevere. The NYJL works with a variety of community partners, including the Supportive Children’s Advocacy Network, Mentoring USA, Andrew Glover, and Good Shepherd. Volunteers provide programming that uses a positive approach, harnessing individual strengths and aiming to foster responsibility, self-esteem, initiative and development of life skills.
