EPIC ENDING HIV/AIDS REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST URGENT HEALTH CRISES OF OUR TIME. MORE THAN 35 MILLION PEOPLE ARE LIVING WITH HIV, INCLUDING OVER A MILLION AMERICANS, AND TWO MILLION ARE INFECTED EACH YEAR.
While treatment has helped many of those with the virus live longer and healthier lives, the cost and complexity of providing treatment continue to prevent millions from accessing it. To end the epidemic once and for all, we need a cure that can be delivered to all who need it. ACCELERATING PROGRESS THROUGH UNPRECEDENTED INVESTMENTS The Countdown to a Cure for AIDS is a bold new amfAR initiative aimed at developing the scientific basis for a cure by 2020. Guided by a Cure Council—a team of distinguished scientific advisors—we plan to invest $100 million in research studies targeting the last remaining roadblocks to a cure. Using a directed approach to research, amfAR is identifying high-priority areas of investigation, designing relevant studies, and finding the best scientists to carry them out. Many of these projects are conducted by collaborative teams of researchers with different areas of expertise, creating synergy, and eliminating the secrecy and competition that can slow scientific progress. Importantly, the strategy is designed to provide support to any scientist or team of investigators for any research idea with the potential to advance the search for a cure, at any stage of its development.
