DESIGN HISTORY AND PARK EVOLUTION

Robert Moses Era Park Enlargement Robert Moses believed that this waterfront could be the most beautiful place in the world. He pictured great terraces overlooking the River with sailboats and yachts along the shore. The 79th Street Boat Basin and Rotunda realized that dream. The Rotunda’s cool cloister with a fountain was a vestibule to the arcaded terrace overlooking the vessels in the marina. The marina became the City's front door for visiting yachts and marine dignitaries. Finally New York City had a "river gate" grand enough to welcome and accommodate the yachts of the world.
