An in-depth look at the Javits Center sustainability efforts

With the construction of a oneacre rooftop farm, we’re working closely with urban farming company Brooklyn Grange and our on-site catering team, Cultivated, to grow up to 40,000 pounds of annual produce and incorporate that produce into the meals we serve on site.

From corn and cucumbers to radishes and red cabbage, it’s a true roof-to-table experience that serves as the latest step in our sustainability journey. Over the past decade, we have installed thousands of bird-safe glass panels, constructed the largest green roof in New York State and maintained a wildlife habitat for more than 35 bird species, five bat species and nine bee hives.

The rooftop farm was created as part of a 1.2 million square-foot expansion of the Javits Center that was completed in 2021. Located at the north end of the campus, the expansion includes more than 200,000 square feet of new meeting and pre-function space, a 90,000 square-foot exhibition hall and a glass-enclosed rooftop pavilion and terrace with stunning views of the Hudson River.

With a growing demand for inperson events, these new dynamic spaces have played a critical role in attracting new customers to our six-block venue and enabling us to continue supporting the hotel, restaurants, tourism and transportation industries.

A four-level truck marshaling facility also has been constructed, which allows us to relocate thousands of event trucks off local streets and reduce area congestion and pollution. It’s a win-win for the West Side, but it also means we can significantly accelerate the movein/move-out process for events, creating even more room on our busy calendar.

Since our doors first opened in 1986, our mission has always been to operate as an economic engine, serving as a launchpad for new products and services.

But our sustainability program has helped us become a better neighbor to all New Yorkers -- those with wings and those without. Tobookarooftoptour, visitwww.javitscenter.com
